It's subtly epic, charged with sweeps of orchestration which tease at a big drop to come. 'Flame' has a slightly more intimate, heads-down approach, but it's no less detailed and dynamically produced. 'Igako' explores some pop touches in the context of a bigger room sound which still holds fast to the slick tech house framework and 'Ask The Universe' takes a more delicate approach with pattering percussion and melancholic piano which will set any set off on a sentimental trip.

Review: NOPAU's Rich Mahogany EP, released on Our Sin from Romania, is a journey into deep, minimal techno. The EP opens with 'Rich Mahogany', a fun and thumping techno track with tribal grooves. The next track, 'Inside Of Resyn', has a minimal tech sound reminiscent of the early 00s, with catchy melodies and cool sounds. 'Midnight At The Rio Grande' features a growling bassline, eerie atmospheres and a gritty groove with jangled percussion. Review: The secretive Only Music Matters label rolls out its seventh EP here and it's from an unknown producer or producers who seem to have a love of tech house. Opener 'AAA001A' is a warped cut for freaky 'floors with trippy vocal details and gloopy beats and bass. 'BBB001B' is more airy and light in its silky minimal rhythms but is detailed with some paranoid pads that keep you on edge while 'BBB002B' rides a nice gritty, propulsive beat and has some wonky, detuned keys adding colour. Another great outing from this low-key but high-quality label.

Review: Tetsu Shibuya, better known as simply Tetsu or BRISA is a Japanese producer and DJ known for works on the iconic Japanese Jazzy Sport imprint, King Street sub-label Nite Grooves and his own BRISA Music. Leading the EP is title-track 'Stir', in collaboration with Turbojazz BRISA delivers a classic slice of deep house built upon layers of bright stab sequences and loose organic percussion. Detroit's beloved Jon Dixon turns his hand to 'Stir' next, encapsulating the soul of his hometown in reshaping fragments of the original composition. The original of 'Reverie' opens the B-side, laying down a broken rhythm, low-pitched vocal hooks and elongated bass grooves for a more bruk tinged feel. Byron The Aquarius then extracts the core of 'Reverie' and spins it into bumpy, subtly nuanced house workout. Review: Udacha family band Zdehvedo Gob is a collective of musicians who all hail from various cities around the world. It consists of Udacha label head Alexey Kalik as well as drummer Roman Shestaev and Gamayun associates Anton Dvoenko and Stas Mitrofanov and they all got together in the studio in Moscow in summer 2023 and the results are now presented on this new album. Review: Mega-exclusive, exquisite house, funk and disco editry from Almacks, who follow up two just-as-delightful introductions to the series with a welcome third. This furtive operation is almost entirely mediated by retailers like us, and is billed as a purveyor of 'tried and tested sure-shots' in very limited runs, whose coveted lipid discs help bolster "community in secret places". Of course, what would be a sense of community without a sense of exclusivity to match? The crux of the art of the five tracks here, though all largely instrumental, is indeed penetrable; all the numbers here home in on the glisteny downtime moments heard on many a classic disco and funk tune, in which time seems to stop, nerves grow tender, and high strings and ghostly vocals take flight. Keep an eye on this series; it reminds us of a funkier-intoned Ghost Phone; 'Track 4' is the real odd highlight.

Review: The debut album from Mississippi soul legends The Natural Four, Good Vibes! deserves this full reissue on Wax Trader, which puts a dent in its former obscurity and rareness. An early LP incarnation of Chris James, Allen Richardson, John January and Al Bowden in unison, the album delivers the posi-vibes it promises and then some. But despite its commitment to a good time, the Four don't fall prey to the idea that such vibes necessarily mean avoiding of slow jams; indeed, star cuts like 'Why Should We Stop Now' are as pleading and longing in tone as they are premonitory of the relationship at hand going well; things get even wild-Wester on 'Message From A Black Man', amounting to a multifaceted take on the stated good vibe.

Review: Music duo North 90 reclaim an unfortunate term inherited by much 90s and 00s Eurodance, 'Eurotrash', with an inspired EP released through London's M.A.D. Records. Its four slabs of soulful cheese - kitsch, edging-on-twee, breaksy Euro-house - are lent a modern twist by the pair, proving the immense possibility of an unfairly derided sound. Opener 'Euro Trash' is the obvious lead, but then there's also the low-slanging dreamworlds of 'We Can Only Imagine' and 'Isabell', which recall sonic contexts when Europe indeed wasn't the site of scorn, but rather admiration for its projection of style.

With this being the fifth in the series to reissue their select most vital tracks, which here come re-edited and remastered, 'Nu Groove Edits Vol. 5' opens with Ny House'n Authority's 'Fort Green House' after its re-edit by Arms & Legs' Daniel Steinberg, which sets the tone for a janky and roomy pandora's box of groovers. Review: Timmy Thomas' Why Can't We Live Together is a timeless soul classic that got some remix treatment in 1981. Originally released in 1972, the track's message of unity and love is still relevant today, and Liebrand's remixes gave it a modern disco edge that appealed to new listeners fans of dance music. The story, according to Ben Liebrand himself, goes: "This is a mashup/bootleg mix of Timmy Thomas and T-Connection's At Midnight made by yours truly. The Belgian record company 'took' this mix, had this Mike sing on top of it and released it as their own. When people started to realize the 'origins' of this mix, the company re-recorded everything, fed the new versions amongst the illegal versions, and thus conveniently obscured the amount of 'bootleg-versions' sold." Review: A golden rule for dance music: the track must be 'unfazed' or 'un-phased', in several senses. In one sense, it must first convince the listener that the producer did not 'lose their cool', i.e. did not put in as much effort as they likely actually did in order to achieve the final result; vintage analog sounds and unpolished roughups-around-the-edges usually do the trick here. Secondly, on the technical side of things, there must be no 'phasing', i.e. when the left and right channels of the stereo mix drift out of sync, on the bass - otherwise you can't get a good sound on vinyl. Producer and imprint Un:phazed knows this just as well; this heater, the second volume in the series, ticks both boxes by way of a spitty retro-urban acid dream in two parts!

Review: Fools Paradise offer the next edition of their Paradise Vinyl sampler series: a very special two-tracker shared between peaktime UK house music connoisseur Soul Avengerz (Paul Gardner) and fabulous French producer Sebb Junior. On the A, Avengerz partners with vocalist extraordinaire Adeva to deliver a fresh, raw, re-recorded version of her 1989 vocal house classic with Paul Simpson, 'Musical Freedom'; the new version is a total rerub and makes for an impressive, dance-reviving extended mix. Sebb's 'Colors', meanwhile, revolves around a central 'colours of your love' sample, and dextrously weaves its beats round a central gelatinous, nigh vesicular synth hook, one that froths and jiggles throughout an overall funky, jacking groove.

On the A-side, 'Bizarre Cut 'N' Paste Ride' uses Pharcyde tracks and edits them seamlessly like a DJ would. Focusing in on the original instrumentals, he creates a jazzy sound with them. 'Summer Cyde' expands upon this theme while using the all-time classic 'Passin Me By' in the mix. This is like having a dub plate of Pharcyde cuts to your own personal bag. Review: Ultra-slick but also jam-packed, sample-heavy deep house from elusive Italian production duo Rainforest here. Unfortunately, this talented pair dropped off the map after only two releases in the early 90s; this new slice of lightweight legitness now emerges after Rezpektiva got their mitts on the vaults of the Discomagic sublabel Out, for which the duo recorded this EP. Freer on the use of samples and less tethered to the grid than most contemporary producers could possibly be now, their star tune 'Lover' appears in three variant forms here, each flaunting a different side of said high-fashioned musical triangulation.

Review: Billy Lo keeps it high-class on this expansive new 12" from the French folks at Cosmocities. It is house music that is couched in the traditional US style but with plenty of his own unique embellishments. Importantly, the melodies are meaningful and fresh and add everything from bittersweetness to joy to the dusty, paired back and nicely undercooked grooves. 'Let Ur Body Werk' is the sort of steamy sound that will get close-knit backroom crowds all in a sweat and up close and personal and 'Sho Me Ur Luv' brings a little US garage skip to the analogue drums. Spoken words elevate each tune to work on mind, body and soul in equal measure.

Review: While nowhere near as celebrated as some of his NYC contemporaries, Tommy Musto made some incredible music at the turn of the 90s, flitting between breakbeat-driven, techno-tinged heaviness and heady, sample-rich house. The Lost Dubs Volume 1 takes us back to that period via a quartet of contemporaneous cuts recently unearthed in the producer's vaults. There's much to admire throughout, from the driving, bass-heavy hedonism of 'Holdin' On', a track propelled forwards by insatiable organ riffs and breathless beats, and the extra-percussive early morning headiness of 'Baby's Right' - all delay-laden Rhodes licks, funky bass guitar, mazy synth solos and Masters At Work style house beats - to the Victor Simonelli style saucer-eyed warmth of 'Love Is Needed' and the sleazy, Kenny Dope style heaviness of 'Keep It Movin'. Genuine buried treasure!
