Review: The ninth studio album by contemporary hip-hop favourite MIKE, Burning Desire, drops in multiple formats, here on CD with a characteristically GTA-referencing front cover. The CD edition makes for a huge new project spanning over 20 new cuts as well as a swath of B-sides dedicated to his production moniker DJ Blackpower, making for a comprehensive distillation of MIKE's smog-packed sound and universe. The concept behind Burning Desire is titular; a vengeful fantasy delivered in a miasma of sonic hash smoke, alluded to cryptically most notably on the tracks 'Set The Mood' and 'Plz Don't Cut My Wings', featuring Earl Sweatshirt; the overarching mood is one of whimsical largesse, as if MIKE's goal is to pull the wool over the listener's ears, ironically assuring us of a cool kosher breeze, while his flip side nonetheless gets down to the dirtiest of business.

Review: While Japanese record collecting legend DJ Muro might knock out a new mix in the time it takes the average person to change a light bulb, his collections are never less than essential. For the diggers, the long-running Tropicool Boogie series is more essential than most. Now up to volume seven, here the incredibly rare first volume gets another airing in an all-new remastered edition. Across two brilliant discs, Muro brilliantly joins the dots between a myriad of "tropical" styles, from Latin funk, samba, mambo and calypso to hip-hop, modern soul and South American disco. It remains one of Muro's greatest mixes. For that reason alone, it's a "must have".

Review: Japanese crate digger extraordinaire Muro shows no signs of slowing up. His pursuit of record-hunting perfection seems an endless quest, while his love of knocking together white-hot mixtapes has not waned in recent times. This double-disc excursion sees him go back to his roots, abandoning boogie, disco and jazz in favour of funk, soul and hip-hop breaks. Both mixes are, predictably, hugely enjoyable, with Muro cutting, scratching and mixing his way through a range of little-known gems, familiar favourites and quirky, eccentric selections. There's no tracklist, of course, but that's part of the fun - it wouldn't be a Muro mix without no information on his ocean-deep crate-digging finds.

Dark Luminosity: The 21st Century Collection
Cat: 0HX4CD 48.

Experimental/Electronic
Review: Dark Luminosity: The 21st Century Collection is a diamond mine of music by bassist-come-multitalent Jah Wobble, spanning over half of his career as a musician and a poet - from post-PiL material to more recent excursions - resulting in a sound both familiar and foreign. Best understood as a fusion of dub and international musics (but decidedly, it's more than just that), the anthology features a whopping 54 tracks, with guest appearances from Evan Parker, Gaudi, Youth, Bill Laswell and others. And that's not to mention forays into spoken word poetry from Wobble's book set Odds & Sods & Dialogues from 2013. It was compiled by the man himself, of course.

Review: Although never wildly popular in the UK, Belgian New Beat did much to popularize underground dance music and acid house culture in the Low Countries during the late 1980s. It was so popular, in fact, that an incredible volume of new beat records were recorded and released in a small period of time, as this sequel to Belgian New Beat: The Compilation proves. Its four CDs contain a number of scene staples, but for the most part the selections are thoroughly obscure to all but a handful of veteran ravers and old school Belgian DJs. This is a particularly good thing for those relative new to the New Beat sound. Buy this and its similarly epic predecessor, and you'll never need to cop another New Beat release.

His sounds have always drawn on Brock's memories of raves, DJing and basement parties and now this bumper 4 x CD collection marks its final progression. How Deep Is Your Devotion is an authentic listening experience from front to back and one that encompasses fully mastered and remastered versions of all three previous LPs. This is supremely high-quality stuff, from lush and musical depths steeped in personal reflection to widescreen ambient house excursions via cosmic delights.

Review: Just a few nights before Halloween of 2019, The Damned brought, 'A Night Of A Thousand Vampires', to the London Palladium with the help of The Hammer House of Horror and cast of The Circus of Horrors. What transpired was a truly immersive, theatrical, career-spanning set delivered with a level of artistic showmanship that only the iconic horror-punks could pull off so brazenly. Recorded and filmed for immortalisation (or undead resurrection), you can now witness the orchestrated carnage in true fly-on-the-wall, slasher movie voyeuristic fashion.

Review: 'Mondays at The Enfield Tennis Academy' consists of two LPs of long-form, lyrical, groove-based free improv by acclaimed guitarist & composer Jeff Parker's ETA quartet. With longstanding guitarist Parker leading this peculiar corner of spiritual psych-jazz, the album is a sprawling, deft saunter through absolute talent. This is all free improv, eschewing standards so as to show off the ingenuity of the members involved.

Heaven In Hiding
Review: Heaven In Hiding is the fourth studio album from Imminence, a Swedish metalcore band with an imposing presence in the modern day scene. They formed in 2009, and at this point their prominence can't be argued with. The album was foreshadowed by the title-track as the lead single, and it's a staggering track which flips between protracted moments of frosty balladry and blistering screamo explosions. The production is striking and modern, not least on album opener 'I Am Become A Name' and the composition reaches epic, orchestral heights. This deluxe edition comes as a box set with a necklace and feather included - one for the collectors.

Review: Trance is back if you didn't know - of course artists like Armin Van Buuren never really went away, even if they leant into a more maximal EDM sound for a while - but now even the underground cool cats are layering teary eyed synths into their techno. They'd do well to study a master of the form such as Armin whose new album Feel Again finds him reinvigorated and in love with making music once more, so we're told. He took up meditation in order to get there and also "reformed his life routines" and what results is this fine collection of uplifting electronic sound.

Review: Armin Van Burren is one of the enduring titans of the first wave of trance. The Dutchman has many times been voted the best DJ in the world and so by now his legacy is long since assured. That means there are few better placed than him to offer up a sonic statement on A State Of Trance. The 2023 edition of this long-running series comes across three CDs and packs in plenty of heat from all different corners of the genre. He has mixed it all himself with his signature style and leaves nary a dry eye in the house.

Review: Dutchman Armin van Buuren has been a trance overlord for 20-odd years. While many of his peers have veered away from the genre as it dipped in popularity, he has remained ever true to the genre that first made him a global star. His A State of Trance radio shows have helped him take his sound worldwide and now sit at well over 1000 episodes, while the compilation series of the same name remains just as influential. This 2023 edition looks back on the trance season out in Ibiza with three CDs chocked full of contemporary gems from all the biggest names in the scene.

Review: After spending so much of their career to date releasing on Jazzman, it's interesting to see The Greg Foat Group make their way over to Athens Of The North for this cool and deadly new record. "The Dreaming Jewels" keeps the grooves simmering low down - all the sweeter to sink into. Just lock in on "Eric's Breakdown" and ask yourself if the track needs any more than that sweet conga flex. "The Door Into Summer" is a beautifully mellow jam too, all sultry Rhodes and sax to signal the start of lazy days. There are more tender moments and some breezier affairs, but the vibe remains chilled throughout this wonderful set from an accomplished band.

The American was, sadly, taken away from us all too soon after he was diagnosed with HIV in 1986, but not before he dropped his career-defining cult classic album 'World of Echo'. That's the only solo album he produced and this collection is made up of music made and recorded during that same special era, all taken from two unique test pressings. It is an involving listen that highlights the range, breadth and depth of Russell's singular skills.

Review: Given his length of service and the sheer volume of music he's put out, it would be fair to say that a Jeff Mills career retrospective is well overdue. Happily, as "best of" compilations go, "Sight, Sound & Space" is up there with the best. The three discs boast no less than 42 tracks plucked from Mills archives - and those of his Axis Records imprint - with the accompanying 50-page booklet containing detailed commentary on each by the man himself. It's a superb package for both fans and newcomers alike, with the decidedly intergalactic and alien-sounding tracks perfectly summarizing the breadth and depth of his far-sighted work (think Motor City techno anthems, heavy loop jams, sci-fi fuelled electronic soundscapes, neo-classical soundtrack comp, heady ambient works and early morning minimalist club jams).

Review: Jeff Mills' legendary Axis label turned 20 years old last month. To celebrate, the acclaimed Detroit DJ producer has put together this deluxe, two-disc retrospective featuring label favourites, little known gems and stone cold killers. Keen Mills-watchers will know most of the material, but for the rest of us there's plenty to enjoy. Musically, Sequence closely mirrors Mills' career to date, mixing raw and uncompromising techno floor fillers with cascading electro, shuffling ambience and far-sighted Motor City futurism. The balance is just right, confirming our original hunch: this is the sort

Review: Given his stargazing, intergalactic ethos, it's perhaps unsurprising that sci-fi techno overlord Jeff Mills has decided to mark the 50th anniversary of the Apollo XI moon landing by releasing an album containing his musical "interpretations of Earth's moon". As you'd expect from an artist of Mills' standing, it's a very good album. Evocative, atmospheric and hugely spacey - this is Jeff Mills after all - the seven-track set moves from scene-setting, string-laden ambient ("Control, Sattva & Rama") to sparse, acid-flecked dub techno ("Electromagnetic") via a string of fine cuts that variously touch on electro-fired broken techno ("Stabilising The Spin"), Steve Reich style minimalism (the brilliant "Lunar Power"), and semi-orchestral electronic positivity ("The Tides").

Chronicles Of Possible Worlds (DVD)
Review: The theme of "Chronicles Of Impossible Worlds" is exoplanets, new planets discovered starting in 1995 which revolve around a star outside our solar system. Mixing music, dance and visuals, this creative work testifies to the advances of science and hints at the existence of possible other worlds. Following a period of investigation and a meeting with researchers from the Marseille Astrophysics Laboratory, Mills chose to focus on six planets (Wasp 12b, 13b, 14b, 15b, 16b and 17b). Their specific physical and structural properties were then translated through music, sound, images and dance.

Together with Mills, the choreographer Alexandre Riccoli created a roaming choreography spread out across the Vasarely Foundation that explores the correspondence between the physical properties of these planets and choreography's own "body states". The show's soundtrack, composed by Mills, is broadcast by the dancers' costumes (designed by Berlin designer Anke Bruns) that are equipped with speakers. The music, the different sonic trajectories, the dancers and the public ambling freely through the halls can spacialize, orbit, or even fuse in the naves of the Foundation.

Review: Given his well-known love of futurism, it seems fitting that Jeff Mills has chosen to eschew the CD format in favour of releasing his latest album on a specially designed 40mm square "USB cube". While the format is novel, it's the music that makes The Jungle Planet an essential purchase. It sees Mills in full-on sci-fi mode, recounting a tale (in instrumental form, of course) about "the last waking human" on a trip to "the planet of planets". In the wrong hands, this would be a pretentious mess, but there's no one better than the Detroit legend at creating alien worlds using synthesizers and drum machines. While not everyone will get the concept, few will have any complaints about his far-sighted blends of bleep-heavy ambience, swooping soundscapes and wide-eyed techno futurism.

Review: 2012 marks 20 years since the formation of Jeff Mills' Axis imprint, and two decades since the release of his first album. The Messenger, his 17th full-length excursion, is the fourth in the Detroit techno great's continuing series of faux sci-fi soundtracks. Underpinned by a complex, far-fetched storyline - we won't bore you with the convoluted details - the 14 tracks that make up The Messenger veer from cybernetic Detroit techno-funk to crystalline ambience via stargazing grooves and, of course, classic Mills loop techno masculinity. As with last year's equally admirable 2087, The Messenger is true to the original ethos of Detroit techno. It's emotion-rich, ambitious, melodic, far-sighted and laden with meaning.

Review: Even by Jeff Mills' usually grandiose standards, there's something willfully epic about Planets; a hybrid electronic/orchestral score paying tribute to the wonders of the solar system, in a similar vein to Gustav Holst's celebrated Planets suite. It's a dizzyingly grandiose work in concept and execution, with the Detroit legend being joined by a Portuguese orchestra on a set that mixes sweeping movements with atmospheric ambient interludes. The resultant score is utterly beguiling, undeniably intergalactic, jaw-dropping in scale and capable of switching from dramatic intensity to becalmed bliss in the blink of an eye. The project's roots are explored further on disc two, which showcases Mills' original electronic compositions.

Review: This is the latest volume in Jeff Mills' epic Sleeper Wakes sci-fi series, and sees the Motor City techno legend musing on the "cosmic menace" that is the imaginary Free Fall Galaxy (or Britain post-Brexit, perhaps). It's a typically downbeat, atmospheric and evocative affair, with Mills blurring the boundaries between sytnthesizer-heavy movie soundtrack work, high-minded ambient, Radiophonic Workshop style electronic experimentation, deep and otherworldly techno, intense acid and, of course, throbbing 4/4 dancefloor pressure. As usual with Mills work in this series, the emphasis is on instrumental story telling, with the ebb and flow of the album's construction evoking mental images of confusion and paranoia amongst the endless darkness.

Review: Since many of Jeff Mills's strongest albums have been new scores to classic sci-fi films, hopes are naturally high for this audio interpretation of Georges Melies' 1902 silent movie, A Trip To The Moon. As you'd expect, it's an impressively cinematic musical journey, with the Detroit legend using synthesizers and drum machines to do the work of an orchestra. It touches on many of his usual musical tropes - think star-hazing ambient and futurist Detroit techno - while also offering nods towards Chicago acid, the kind of cyclical, phase-based compositions pioneered by Steve Reich, experimental noise, and neo-classical. It's emotive, immaculately produced, and hugely entertaining.

Review: An artist whose life was often beset by tragedy and ill fortune, and one who arguably never achieved his true potential, Jackson C. Frank has had his songs covered by everyone from Simon & Garfunkel (his former flatmates) and Nick Drake to Laura Marling and Counting Crows. Moreover, the appeal of the reflective world-weary melancholy of these songs extends well beyond the mid-'60s folk circuit where he initially made his name. This collection is the definitive version of the man's work: remastered and sounding richer than ever, it contains 24 previously unreleased tracks, paying rich homage to a maverick and magical talent.

Review: The long beloved Balance series of DJ mixes gathers two prominent figures in the history of dance music for this one episode - Dave Seaman & Quivver. The two are paired up for this double CD set that also features two new tracks to make this project even more appetising. Both Dave Seaman and John Graham aka Quivver have over 30 plus years in the business each, with DJ gigs and credits lists that go on for days to read and their experience shows here. Highlights include Dave's heavy driving remix of 'Low Burn' by Underworld, Ben Archbold's epic 'Psychedelic Halo' and Timo Maas's bass heavy remix of Polaroit's 'Apart'. Dave and Quivver's mixing is flawless as usual - their ability to take a handful of strong tracks and make an epic journey is something they have earned their stripes doing, now you can experience it from the comfort of your living room.

Review: 'Field Manual' is the debut solo album from Death Cab for Cutie founding member Chris Walla. Known for his production work for his own band
as well as other similarly indie-minded recording artists (Tegan & Sara, Decemberists), as well as for his guitar work and arranging roles in DCFC,
Walla performs all the instruments on 'Field Manual' other than drums, which were contributed by Jason McGerr (Death Cab For Cutie) and Kurt
Dahle (The New Pornographers). After Walla enlisted the help of Canada-based British ex-pat (and Midnight Oil/The The producer) Warne
Livesey, the project hit an unexpected snag when a data hard drive containing critical album files was detained by U.S. Customs on its way back
into the US prior to final mixing. The story of this apparently routine detention led to extensive international press coverage. Ensuing media feeding
frenzies aside, Walla has delivered an extraordinary album of atmospheric and politically-minded alternative pop that displays his singular songwriting
vision while simultaneously showing the degree to which his aesthetic has informed Death Cab's sound over the years. Barsuk's release of 'Field
Manual' precedes the 2008 release of a new Death Cab for Cutie album on Atlantic.

Review: When Joey Negro and Sean P established the Disco Spectrum series of compilations back in 1999, few DJs were digging for disco. Almost two decades on, we're told that disco was the sound of summer 2017 (and the summer before that). The time is right, then, for this "best of", containing the finest cuts from the series' three previous volumes. This time round, the crate-digging duo has opted for a mixture of familiar favourites ("Spread Love", "Out Of My Hands (Love's Taking Over)", "Bourgie Bourgie", "Together Forever" etc.) and harder to find gems. These include Caribbean disco classic "Trinidad" by John Gibbs and the US Steel Orchestra, Blair's sumptuous "Nightlife" and Larry Levan's brilliant remix of Syreeta's synth-laden slammer "Can't Shake Your Love".

Review: After appearances on the likes of Downwards, Clan Destine and Minimal Wave offshoot Cititrax, Berlin-based duo The KVB land on Geoff Barrow's Invada label for the first in a series of releases. To introduce the duo, Invada have elected to give the super rare Mirror Being album a proper release on vinyl after The KVB self-issued on limited cassette back in January. Mirror Being differs from most releases from The KVB as the pair's deep set vocals, a key component of their sound, are largely absent from the 10 tracks but their reverb soaked mastery of guitars and analogue gear is still very much evident throughout. We await their forthcoming new album from Invada with real interest.

Review: Long before disco-digging and needless re-editing became the pastime of a generation, Glaswegian graphic designer-turned-DJ Al Kent was doing both. For proof, check his acclaimed, illicit Disco Demands series. Originally launched in 2000 as an outlet for his obsession with barely-known 1970s dance music, it quickly became a conduit for his painstakingly faithful re-edits of long-forgotten disco records. Having seen his stock rise of late, BBE have decided to re-issue each of the five volumes in one bumper box set. For those with a love of disco's stranger fringes, The Best Of Disco Demands should be required listening. With 45 stonking cuts - some re-edits, others original studio versions - across five discs, it's an essential indulgence for disco heads everywhere.

Review: Since launching two years ago, Tony Higgins and Mike Peden's J-Jazz series has become an indispensable guide to Japan's modern jazz scene. The third volume continues in a similar vein to its predecessors, gathering together sought-after, overlooked and little-known cuts from across the jazz spectrum (think spiritual, modal, fusion, post-bop and Latin), all of which were recorded by Japanese artists in the 1960s, '70s and '80s. The standard of music is, somewhat predictably, breathtakingly high throughout, with highlights including the weighty post-modal bop of Koshuke Mine's 'Morning Tide', the sun-kissed Brazil-inspired brilliance of Hideo Shiraki's 'Groovy Samba', and a string of funk-fuelled, dancefloor-friendly workouts from Hiroshi Murakami & Dancing Sphynx, Shigeharu Muka and the Ryojiro Furusawa Quartet.

Review: Japan's revered DJ Muro has put together his first ever compilation for BBE and this version comes on CD, with cassette and vinyl versions also available on Juno. Diggers Dozen is a real gem with 12 tracks of Japanese jazz-funk and Latin-jazz goodness that fuse traditional instrumental with traditional melodies. These tunes were originally made for the 70s for Nippon Columbia by legendary composers of the time such as Kiyoshi Yamaya, Tadaaki Misago & Tokyo Cuban Boys, Kifu Mitsuhashi, Toshiyuki Miyama and more. Finding these cuts on their original pressings is rare and expensive so don't sleep on this real collector's essential.

Review: BBE's on going love for Japanese jazz has spawned several superb compilations of late. This is the fourth such volume of their J Jazz: Deep Modern Jazz From Japan series and it is sub-titled The Nippon Columbia label 1968 - 1981. It's a tasteful collection that arrives here on double CD and is again packed with classy sounds from a range of key players. Takashi Mizuhashi joins forces with seminal American talent Herbie Hancock on 'Samba De Negrito' and Hiromasa Suzuki, Jiro Inagaki & His Big Soul Media make a lasting impression with the hard bop of 'By The Red Stream' and the likes of Nobuo Hara & His Sharps & Flats, Hozan Yamamoto go wild on 'Chakkiri-Bushi.' Essential.

Review: You might know Airto Moreira and Flora Purim as the King and Queen of Brazilian Jazz and for good reason. They have spent more than the last half decade putting out some of their homeland's finest and most richly rewarding jazz albums as well as playing exhilarating live shows all over the world. They have found favour with jazz lovers everywhere as a result, from Japan's concert halls to the UK's jazz-funk scenes. If You Will was their last album back in 2022 and it got a Grammy, and now A Celebration: 60 Years - Sounds, Dreams & Other Stories brings together some of their best work from over the last 60 odd years. Essential stuff.

Review: BBP presents '52 Beats 2008', an incredible re-take on Kid Capri's classic '52 Beats' mixtape. If you don't know, that's one of the monoliths in mixtape history. Originally released around 1990, back when the cassette game was booming. Here Grandmaster Roc Raida pays tribute to the original with his own set of classic breaks, tastefully showcasing his DMC-calibre cutting and juggling skills using 'Funky President', 'Sing Sing', 'Pussyfooter', 'Cheeba Cheeba', 'Soul Power', 'Mind Power', 'Walk This Way', 'Ashley's Roachclip', 'Hand Clapping Song', and 'Long Red', basically the ultimate breaks and beats catalogue re-tooled.

Review: Four years have passed since John Digweed's last four-disc mix outing, with the pandemic scuppering the veteran DJ's plans to record an extended set in an exotic location. Instead, what we get is a lightly edited recording of Diggers' most recent gig at Fabric in London, from the autumn of 2021. If you love Digweed's trademark DJ sound - smooth, long blends, melodic builds, dreamy chords and layered melodies alenty - then there's plenty to savour across this epic mix album. While there are a few techno tracks squeezed in on disc four, for the most part Digweed effortlessly joins the dots between tech-house, deep house, progressive house and the kind of melody-rich, atmospheric electronic fare that has always been his sonic calling card.

Review: Nine months in the making and containing45 tracks, "Quattro" is the latest from ever-present UK techno titan John Digweed. It is another mammoth project - does he deal in any other kind? - that showcases a broader range of sound than ever across five discs, each of which has its own subtly differing theme. His own atmospheric soundscapes feature next to music from Bedrock mainstays and newbies alike. There is delicate ambient techno, lush progressive house and plenty of cathartic grooves laden with emotion and ready to accompany plenty of hours of self-isolation from morning through noon and night.

Review: Ringo and his All-Starr Band recorded this popular live show in October 2019 at the iconic Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. The show featured Greg Rolie (from Santana), Steve Lukather (from Toto), Hamish Stuart of Average White Band and Men at Work's Colin Hay. They worked through a fairly epic mix of classics with plenty of live and raw energy. Tunes such as Black Magic Woman originally by Santana, Toto's 'Rosanna' and 'Pick Up The Pieces' from Average White Band all featured. They all sound razor sharp as this one comes on double CD with a Blu-Ray.

Review: Norwegian ambient maestro Biosphere continues to offer up expansive new editions of some of the many classic albums in his bulging back catalogue. The latest to get the treatment is 2004 set 'Autor De La Lune', which began life when he was commissioned by French radio to create a piece using something from their archive. He chose a radio dramatization of a Jules Verne story about a trip to the moon, sampled it up, threw in some recordings of the MIR space station, and then added his own instrumentation. The results - and particularly the stunning, 21-minute opener 'Translation' - are as inspired, minimalistic and atmospheric as you'd expect. This edition includes a second disc with five further pieces recorded as part of the project, but which have never been released before.

Review: Just over a quarter of a century after it first hit record stores, Aaliyah's second studio album, One in a Million, returns in deluxe form. Presented in a box alongside a stencil and celebratory T-shirt, the heart of this remastered edition remains the original album. It was one of the R&B sets of the 1990s and features a cast-list of contributors (think Timbaaland, Missy Elliot, Kay-Gee, Lightly, Jerkins, Dupri and Slick Rick) that reads like a veritable who's who of hip-hop and soul heavyweights of the period. Highlights include the head-nodding headiness of 'Hot Like Fire', the gorgeously warm and woozy 'A Girl Like You', the Isley Brothers-sampling slow jam 'Choosey Lover (Old School/New School)' and the Marvin Gaye-biting Slick Rick hook-up 'Got To Give It Up'.

Review: If you're looking for a bumper collection of chart bothering and ever-popular 80s disco then look no further than this. Blanco Y Negro has assembled no fewer than three whole CDs worth of the stuff and managed to include every sub-genre imaginable. Pop disco, hi-nrg, Italo disco, 80s house, nu-disco and plenty in between are all covered with aplomb. There are stone-cold classics like The Human League's 'Don't You Want Me', Grandmaster Flash & Melle Mel's 'White Lines (Don't Don't Do It)' and The Human League's 'Don't You Want Me' as well as a few equally fun but slightly less ubiquitous jams.

Review: Kazuki Tomokawa is one of the most enigmatic figures in Japan's modern musical history. Not only a poet and a singer, he's also a bicycle race commentator and a self-described vagabond, and in the 70s he set his poems to music as Japan enjoyed something of a folk music boom. It was 1975 when he recorded his first album, in particular teaming up with percussionist Toshiaki Ishizuka for a fruitful musical partnership. Blank Forms has been diligently reissuing much of Tomokawa's music, and now they're turning their attention to this deluxe three CD boxed set comprised of Finally, His First Album, Straight from the Throat, and A String of Paper Cranes Clenched between My Teeth.
