Review: Brock Van Wey's output as Earth House Hold started a decade ago and since then he has been on a constant mission to explore the fringes of house music. His sounds have always drawn on Brock's memories of raves, DJing and basement parties and now this bumper 4 x CD collection marks its final progression. How Deep Is Your Devotion is an authentic listening experience from front to back and one that encompasses fully mastered and remastered versions of all three previous LPs. This is supremely high-quality stuff, from lush and musical depths steeped in personal reflection to widescreen ambient house excursions via cosmic delights.

Review: 'Does Spring Hide Its Joy' is an immersive audio experience by American composer Kali Malone featuring the likes of Stephen O'Malley and Lucy Railton. Created and recorded in the empty Berlin Funkhaus & Monom during the lockdown of spring 2020, the music is a study in long-form, non-linear durational composition, with dramatic ringing synth patches that reverberate through both the mind and the tower Malone recorded in. With a 10-minute film accompaniment, the iconic nineteenth-century Grade II listed building was the stage for Malone's composition, which breathes and bellows through porous brick walls, reverberating toward the surface.

Review: Those who lived through the 1990s will happily tell you that few ambient and electronica outfits of the period could match the emotive, life-affirming majesty of Mark Pritchard and Tom Middleton's Global Communication project. Transmissions, the pair's first retrospective of their work under the alias, offers plenty of supporting evidence for this view. It features painstakingly re-mastered - and, we will add, brilliant-sounding - versions of two full-length releases: 1993's Blood Music: Pentamerous Metamorphosis, a radical set of lengthy ambient "translations" of tracks by forgotten shoegaze outfit Chapterhouse, and their peerless debut album 76:14, which remains one of the greatest ambient sets of all time. Throw in a third CD featuring collected singles and remixes, and you have a thoroughly essential three-disc set.

Review: Jim Kirby AKA The Caretaker has been serving up volumes of the decidedly experimental "Everywhere At The End Of Time" series since 2016. This four-disc set gathers together albums four, five and six, each of which was inspired by a different aspect of dementia. So while "Stage 4" offers up a quartet of music concrete style sample collages and crackle-laden 1920s period pieces, "Stage 5" is dark, noisy, intense and droning - a kind of confused, cloudy aural soundscape that defies easy categorization. "Stage 6", the final album is the series, is largely quiet and contemplative, featuring lengthy, crackle-laden ambient movements that arguably count among the artist's most impactful pieces to date.

Review: It wasn't so long ago we were writing about the joys of BVDUB's Fumika Fades, a new double pack in February that sunk us deep into moving ambient soundscapes. Now the Bay Area dub techno titan Brock van Wey is back once again with yet another album - he dropped plenty of them last year too so is clearly in a mad creative patch. Slowly Shifting Lakes comes in multiple formats, this one being a double CD. The ambient here is coarse and textured, fizzing synths stretching out over skittish rhythmic frameworks before sinking into calmer waters on cuts like the escapist 'Searching For Glowing Shores.' Another triumphant album for sure.

Review: For some reason, the world's foremost ambient explorers have always been prolific. Take the sadly departed Pete Namlook, who released 10 albums in 1994 alone. Brock Van Wey is cut from similar cloth. It was only last week that he delivered an album under his BVDub pseudonym; here, he returns to his given name for a similarly tactile, two-CD voyage into the world of beatless dreamscapes. The Namlook comparisons are understandable; like the once mighty German, Van Wey specializes in creating sprawling pieces based around gradual shifts in long, drawn out chords, slowly shifting melodies (check the Satie-inspired "Can't Go Home Without You"), delay-laden instruments and epic atmospherics. When he gets it right - as he does on Home - there are few greater exponents of the art of ambient.

Review: During the mid 1990s, Seefeel made some of the most authentic, intriguing and immersive music to be released by the Warp and Rephlex label during the period. This fine, four-disc retrospective gather togethers the band's key work from that period, offering a still unique-sounding blend of shoegaze style guitar textures, ambient techno electronics and occasional rhythms inspired by the work of their Warp label mates. What you get is impressive, with expanded editions of EPs and albums from the period (including Succur and (Ch-Vox)) plus rarities and forgotten remixes. There are no less than 22 previously unreleased tracks in total, with extensive liner notes from bandmembers Mark Clifford and Sarah Peacock rounding off an excellent package for confirmed fans and newcomers alike. In a word: essential.

Review: Since pitching up on Soma back in 2011, Rod Modell's Deepchord work has slowly shifted focus, moving from dub-soaked techno hypnotism to experimental ambience via cinematic electronica. At the same time, the Detroit producer has devoted more energy to audiovisual projects, delivering live shows that mix musical drones, pops and crackles with similarly distorted, hallucinogenic visuals. 20 Electrostatic Soundfields, his third full-length for Soma, is seemingly a culmination of this trend. Presented as both an audio CD and DVD - with accompanying visuals - it consists entirely of atmospheric ambience built around drones, heady chords and manipulated white noise. Adventurous and intoxicating, it's one of his deepest sets to date.

Review: The late great Pete Namlook was a master of making spaced out ambient with an array of machines. He has a vast body of work, much of which was done with Move D, but he also worked with others such as Klaus Schulze. Here all four volumes of their The Dark Side of the Moog project is collected across five essential CDs. It is a rich array of experimental electronic sounds and the whole series was a classy and unpretentious affair that is accessible to newcomers as well as hardcore lovers of this vibe.

Review: Given his stargazing, intergalactic ethos, it's perhaps unsurprising that sci-fi techno overlord Jeff Mills has decided to mark the 50th anniversary of the Apollo XI moon landing by releasing an album containing his musical "interpretations of Earth's moon". As you'd expect from an artist of Mills' standing, it's a very good album. Evocative, atmospheric and hugely spacey - this is Jeff Mills after all - the seven-track set moves from scene-setting, string-laden ambient ("Control, Sattva & Rama") to sparse, acid-flecked dub techno ("Electromagnetic") via a string of fine cuts that variously touch on electro-fired broken techno ("Stabilising The Spin"), Steve Reich style minimalism (the brilliant "Lunar Power"), and semi-orchestral electronic positivity ("The Tides").

Review: We are extremely excited to announce our second double disk compilation retrospect on Mood Series! In 2020 and 2021, Greyscale was full steam ahead on bringing new music to the cherished discography. In fact, in 2020, Greyscale released over 20 EP's just on the Mood Series itself! Something we are very proud of and we wish to thank all the artists who have been involved up to this point. A hearty thank you from all at Greyscale! As 2021 came we wanted to balance that out with a few retrospectives of the journey. And also, to revisit the CD format which we really enjoy doing compilations on. This installment looks back at Mood Series #21 thru #40 with a track from each EP!

Review: Known for her minimalistic electroacoustic music, pianist, organist, and composer Sarah Davachi always stands out on the ambient-drone shelves. While many working in these fields are concerned with function as a primary focal point and route to form, Davachi's output is packed with immediate musicality, perhaps due to her penchant for using more traditional orchestral acoustic instrumentals and then giving them the modern treatment. Hence her rising to become one of the most (rightly) fawned-over and respected practitioners in the scene. Two Sisters is a case in point in terms of her overall approach, a collection of tracks that sound utterly timeless, atmospheres created in a way they have been for aeons and yet what's here would have been impossible to realise even just a few decades ago.

Review: Norwegian ambient maestro Biosphere continues to offer up expansive new editions of some of the many classic albums in his bulging back catalogue. The latest to get the treatment is 2004 set 'Autor De La Lune', which began life when he was commissioned by French radio to create a piece using something from their archive. He chose a radio dramatization of a Jules Verne story about a trip to the moon, sampled it up, threw in some recordings of the MIR space station, and then added his own instrumentation. The results - and particularly the stunning, 21-minute opener 'Translation' - are as inspired, minimalistic and atmospheric as you'd expect. This edition includes a second disc with five further pieces recorded as part of the project, but which have never been released before.

Review: Music has the power to fan the folk-mystical and spiritual flames inside even the most ardent of rationalists. Anonymous artist Craven Faults knows as much, which is mostly the reason why he's released his latest album Standers. Named after the colloquial term for the standing stones that pepper much of the north of England, the analog electronic music that makes up this album evokes the mood of trekking across wild country in search of these ancient monuments - occasionally stranded, always awed - sonically reviving and clarifying the oft-murky past of the English north.

Review: The Dark Side of the Moog series has always been one of ambient music's best-kept secrets. Launched by former Tangerine Dream and Ash Ra Tempel man Klaus Schulze, and German ambient legend Pete Namlook in 1993, the series eventually ran to 11 albums. Given that original copies of many of the sets now go for silly money online, this ongoing series of boxed reissues is a godsend. This third (and final) installment contains the final three albums in the series, all of which were amongst the duo's finest collaborative work, plus a sparkling 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound edition of volume XI. There's also a fifth bonus disc, containing a typically epic, improvised live performance, recorded in Hamburg.

Review: Since it first appeared in 1980, computer music pioneer Laurie Spiegel's debut album, "The Expanding Universe", has become something of a cult classic; an acclaimed, avant-garde masterpiece loved by ambient heads, experimental electronic freaks and neo-classical enthusiasts alike. Listening to this expanded reissue, which also includes 15 other rare or previously unreleased Spiegel tracks recorded around the same time, it's easy to see why. Sitting midway between the synthesizer works of Terry Riley, a computerized take on "Berlin School" ambient and electronica records produced years later, the music is becalmed, inspired, mesmerizing and otherworldly in equal measure. The title track, a near 30-minute epic of slowly shifting ambient electronics, is particularly memorable.

Review: Although fusing modern classical and ambient music has become popular in recent times, Otto A Totland is no bandwagon-jumping newcomer. As part of Deaf Center, the Norwegian pianist and producer made telling contributions to the style's development as far back as 2004. His debut solo album, 2014's Pino, is also widely regarded as something of an unassuming, modern-day classic. This belated follow-up is every bit as beguiling as its predecessor, with Totland unfurling simple, stripped-back tracks built around his deft and sympathetic piano improvisations and hazy field recordings. It's similar in tone to some of Nils Frahm's work, though it feels a lot more melancholic, distant and atmospheric; all traits that guarantee and emotional listening experience.

Review: The eponymous debut album from London-based Welsh/Canadian duo Moon Ate The Dark was one of the most underrated downtempo sets of 2012; a thrillingly evocative set of piano compositions laden in reverb and subtle production trickery. While this year's follow-up, Moon Ate The Dark II, altered the formula a little - specifically by including a whisper of drone-inspired electronics and more imaginative production treatments - the mesmerising, eyes-wide-shut effect was the same. Here, the two albums are paired together for the first time on a two-disc set housed in a lovely, hand-printed sleeve. If you've not heard either album, it should be an essential purchase.

Review: The name Ludwig Goransson appears to becoming more and more renowned with each passing year. Rising to prominence as the primary producer of Childish Gambino (and a large creative force behind the success of LPs such as Camp, Because The Internet and "Awaken, My Love!") while in tandem working on film scores for comedy fare such as We're The Millers and Central Intelligence, it was his Oscar and Grammy award-winning work on the Black Panther soundtrack (as well as the conflicting interest of legendary composer Hans Zimmer who had committed to working on the score for Dune) that led to his first collaboration with auteur filmmaker Christopher Nolan for 2020's head-melting Tenet. Continuing their newfound partnership with the dense, weighty biopic Oppenheimer, Goransson utilises harsh drones, strained strings and a perplexing approach to volume levels in order to craft an oppressive, melancholic and dread-inducing score that manages to balance modern classical flourishes with atonal noise and caustic moments of cathartic, smothering ambience. While an Oscar nod is all but guaranteed, if the academy in question have any real stones, this incomparable and vital soundtrack will be taking home the gold, no questions asked.

Review: Neo-classical composer Christoph Berg impressed with his 2012 debut album, Paraphrases. In the time since, he's mostly worked on collaborative releases; happily, he's finally got round to producing a second solo full-length. Produced in a similar fashion to his previous output, with Berg layering up recordings of him playing violin, organ, piano and double bass alongside subtle electronics and manipulated found sounds, Conversations is a soft-focus symphony in eight parts. Full of slowly shifting movements, the album slowly shuffles between heart aching melancholy, springtime beauty and the kind of poignancy more readily associated with neo-classical heavyweights such as Nils Frahm.

Review: Barely a week goes by without BVDUB popping up with a vast new collection of his absorbing ambient music. Hot on the heels of February's Fumika Fades album is this, Slowly Shifting Lakes, another epic collection of fuzzy, lo-fi, gorgeously textured and lived-in ambient. It's intense and full by some ambient standards - soundscapes that demand the attention and go from misty, rainy visions to more serene and blissed-out vibes. This is the perfect way to pick this album up - as both a double CD and also a double cassette including download codes.

Review: Born in Cannes in 1943, Michele Bokanowski has become a towering figure in the world of composing electroacoustic music. The Frenchwoman lives in Paris and this new and comprehensive four-CD collection brings together all the concert music she ever played. It is an ambitious release but a vital one that spans 1974 to 2020. Michele mainly composes for concert and for cinema but has also done so for TV, dance and theatre. She brings her own sense of mysterious atmosphere and poetic concrete sounds - which result from her studying music concrete - all with an artful cinematic editing job to finish it off.

Review: Drew McDowall is as complex and enigmatic an artist as Coil, who he worked closely with for many years. He's followed his own path as well as being tangled up in the world of Jhonn Balance and Sleazy, and now this box set on Dais offers an authoritative overview of four relatively recent LPs and additional exclusive material stretching over six CDs. 2015's Collapse, 2017's Unnatural Channel, 2018's The Third Helix and 2020's Agalma are joined by a disc of rare, alternative and extended versions and a disc of live performances. From oddly angled ambience to lithe, snaking electronica, there's a lot of different sides to McDowall's curious musical mind, and this extensive collection is a perfect way to navigate just part of it.

Review: Kailash sees Soul Jazz do what Soul Jazz does best and pull together a wonderful posthumous celebration of Popul Vuh band leader leader Florian Fricke. Loosely billed as an informal career retrospective, Kailash features sketches that lead to some krautrock classics by Popul Vuh as well as a healthy amount of unreleased improvisations and recordings from Fricke that were uncovered after his passing in 2001. Largely based around Fricke's solo piano works, the double CD retrospective is augmented by a DVD edition of the German's 1995 documentary from which Soul Jazz named the compilation! Popul Vuh fans will be all over this!

Each set contains a mixture of career highlights plucked from albums released at different times since the 1970s, as well as rare and previously unreleased recordings. Booster VII, the seventh and final set in the series, boasts no less than 10 unique and unheard recordings, alongside classic synthesizer soundscapes and hypnotic electronic epics in the ever-changing band's now trademark style. Whether you're a casual fan or an obsessive follower, you'll find plenty to enjoy across both discs, including sweeping, soundtrack style pieces, colourful wig-outs and spellbinding ambient gems.

Review: With 'Long Gradus', Sarah Davachi seizes the opportunity to take one idea and explore it from as many angles as possible. The celebrated composer and ambient artist is consistently investigating musical possibilities from a learned, authoritative perspective and so this latest project finds her expanding on an initial invitation to the Composer's Kitchen residency in the Netherlands. Fundamentally scored for a string quartet, Davachi's intention with the stirring, sustained tension of 'Long Gradus' was that it could be performed on a number of different instruments, and this expansive four-CD edition on her Late Music label presents the piece performed on woodwinds, brass and organ and choir and electronics alongside the fundamental string version.

Review: In honour of the 25th birthday of painter-turned-DIY musician Tor Lundvall's hard-to-find debut album, 'Passing Through Alone', Dais has joined forces with the New York-based creative polymath to produce a career-spanning, five-disc box set. Naturally, it begins with that 1997 debut - on which he laid down his now familiar "signature palette of synth, sequencers, guitar, drum machines, and hushed spectral voice" (as the label puts it) - before delivering an expanded edition of his 2010 odds-and-ends collection 'Ghost Years'. What follows is inaugural CD editions of three of Lundvall's most recent albums: 'A Strangeness In Motion' (a collection of lo-fi pop tracks recorded across the 90s), 'A Dark Place' and 'Beautiful Illusions'. A fitting celebration of a genuinely unique artist.

Review: Earlier this year, Midori Hirano joined forces with fellow Japanese producer Ytamo on the cassette-only Time Unbox, an intriguing exploration of ambient, neo-classical and music concrete. Minor Planet sees Hirano go solo once more, laying down a collection of atmospheric, otherworldly pieces that sit somewhere between contemporary classical movements, and deep space ambient. There's naturally much beauty to be found throughout, from the twinkling pianos, quiet chords and horizontal textures of "Two Kites", and the claustrophobic electronics of "Night Traveling", to the Pete Namlook style spaciousness of "Haiyuki", and the cosmic shimmer of closer "Rolling Moon".

Review: Here comes a deluxe edition of this much-loved tribute album. The story goes that some four years after the death of Jhonn Balance in 2009, This Immortal Coil's album The Dark Age Of Love arrived as something of a tribute to the work of British band Coil over two previous decades. The album brought together a ragtag team of musicians and was well-received by critics, as well as by Peter Christopherson who himself died in 2010. That promoted another crew of musicians to assemble to record a new album which was eventually titled The World Ended A Long Time Ago on its release in 2022. Featured on it are the likes of Shannon Wright, David Chalmin, Matt Elliott, Christine Ott, Aho Ssan, Gaspar Claus, Aidan Baker and more.

Review: You have to admire Cabaret Voltaire co-founder Richard H Kirk. The Sheffield-based producer recently celebrated 40 years as an audio/visual artist, and shows no sign of throwing in the towel. This three-disc collection brings together three albums recorded between October 2010 and December 2011. The first disc showcases Reality is Opposite, an album that fuses freaky guitar textures, sampled breakbeats, bubbling electronics and odd digital textures. Disc two focuses on Orchestra Terrestrial, Kirk's attempt to make classic music out of analogue electronics. The third disc, which is arguably closest to his Cabs' material, delivers a range of tough, Italo and industrial influenced arpeggio workouts. The whole thing is quietly impressive, in a typically no-nonsense Northern way.

Review: As this expansive reissue proves, Max Richter's 2004 album The Blue Notebooks remains one of the greatest neo-classical works of recent decades. The album was famously inspired by the 2003 US invasion of Iraq and featured narration from actress Tilda Swinton. Such was the record's impact, in fact, that numerous pieces subsequently appeared on a variety of high profile movie soundtracks. To celebrate the work's 15th birthday, Richter has bundled the album with a second disc of largely unheard material. This includes a couple of intriguing remixes by Jlin and Konx-Om-Pax, two archive tracks produced during the album sessions, and a handful of new recordings of key instrumentals. These are all excellent, of course, but still pale in comparison to the inspired original album.

Review: Erased Tapes founder Robert Raths has stated that the objective of 1+1=X was to create a zeitgeist that captured the value of experimenting and reacting to each other as artists. In real time and in the same confines. It marks the tenth anniversary for the imprint, with this collection of exclusive songs from every artist on the label. Originally released on vinyl for Record Store Day 2018 back in April, this features all the original tracks, where they share instruments and each others' capabilities during a residency at Vox-Ton studio in Berlin. Highlights include label staple Nils Frahm's melancholic "Frau Dehlholm", Kiasmos teaming up with Hogni Egilsson on the emotional deep house of "Zebra" and the always impressive Peter Broderick on the bittersweet symphony of "The Perpetual Glow".

Review: Over the last couple of years, kosmiche legend Manuel Gottsching has been traveling the World, performing live renditions of his 1984 album, E2E4 - a glistening, synthesizer-and-guitar led chunk of mood-enhancing minimalism that has long been considered a Balearic classic (assisted, some would say, by its' use in Sueno Latino's eponymous 1989 Italian house hit). E2E4 Live In Japan offers an audio recording of one of these performances, with Gottsching re-creating the majesty of his original album with the use of synthesizers, guitars and - presumably - a computer running Ableton Live. It's impeccable, of course, and comes backed with a DVD containing a film of the very same performance.

Review: In 1988 and '89, legendary industrial eccentrics and LSD enthusiasts Psychic TV contributed soundtracks to two very different films: a 23-minute "short" called Kondole, and Dead Cat, a very strange, 48-minute "head movie" that featured Derek Jarman and Genesis P Orridge in starring roles. The latter is included here on DVD for the very first time (the original film reels were only rediscovered recently), alongside the full dystopian, industrial ambient soundtrack (CD1). For Psychic TV fans, this is a big deal; the doom-laden paranoid and acid-fired weirdness of the full-length version has never before seen the light of day, only the edited version of "Dead Cat" contained on 1993's Kondole - Ov Dolphins & Wales CD. It's that set, with its bonus "part three" wig-out (here titled Thee Shadow Creatures) which is presented in re-mastered form on disc two.

Review: Coil's comprehensive compilation Moon's Milk, based on the four annual seasons and the overpoweringly doomy moods they inspire, comes reissued 18 years after its initial 2002 release. With a strong Coil member base in tow - John Balance, Peter Christopherson, and Thighpaulsandra included - the Four Phases are once again called to mind, and seem to pierce the unconscious with their incisive quietude and unsettling (dis)inhibition, most often totally electronic and droning, but occasionally peppered with faintly hollering vocals and chromatic electric viola interspersals, the latter performed by the now notable occult cleric, William Breeze aka. Tau Silenus.

Review: Since releasing their first EP on Type back in 2004, Deaf Center duo Erik K Skodvin and Otto A Totland have delivered some of the most mesmerizing and well thought-out ambient, IDM and electronica around. "Low Distance" here, builds on the success of 2014 set "Recount", which cleverly combined clandestine neo-classical movements with the claustrophobic paranoia of dark ambient. There's perhaps a little more joy and pure beauty this time round - see the fluid pianos and whistling chords of "Entity Voice" and the becalmed "Undone" - but album still retains the same sense of loneliness and dread that marked out its predecessor.

Review: Harald Uunk's take on techno may be angular, electronic and refreshingly avant-garde, but his creative inspirations are far more natural. Unseen, his expansive debut album, was not - as some may assume given its sonics and largely dystopian feel - influenced by the urban environments in which he lives and works, but rather his frequent adventures in the countryside. That's not immediately evident, but if you close your eyes and listen intently, the various off-kilter polyrhythms, distorted electronic motifs, ghostly electronics and dubbed-out textures soon conjure mind images of stumbling around dark woods and fields in moonlight and pre-dawn drives down deserted rural roads in the Netherlands' most isolated spots. More importantly, it's a hugely enjoyable and evocative beast, even if it does tend towards the dark, intense and unsettling.

Review: Saccharine Scores is an album/art book documenting Sean McCann's recent chamber compositions. Ranging from the 10-person ensemble performance of "Portraits of Friars" at Fylkingen, Stockholm in February 2018, to his first quartet piece "Victorian Wind", performed in Toronto in 2014. McCann's scores leak pastoral and bizarre passages, dancing in the banal beauty of sound poetry. The performances feature guest musicians Sarah Davachi, Zachary Paul, Geneva Skeen, Celia Eydeland, Maxwell August Croy, and more.

The book holds in-depth scores, program notes, and photography by McCann, a lovely complement to finger through while you lay down to listen to the disc. The notes for "Pistons" follow here: "I assembled this piece while wanting to make my life of leisure and gluttony in London somehow artistic. I was in London for a week or ten days in October 2017 for a business trip. I love London. I love doing two things at a time or more. So it worked out. I find I have a hard time enjoying anything unless I am multitasking. For example, right now as I type this description I am also drinking old coffee with ice-cubes in it, exporting a master from Pro-Tools downstairs, and watching Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985) on the television set. So in this British multitasking, I decided to work on a piece of music while indulging in food and drink roaming around London. I was also reading Baudelaire's Les Fleurs Du Mal (1857) during these outings (talk about sentimental). Some elements of those poems crept their way, drawn out of order, into Celia's singing text. As with all my compositions to this point, they are left open to interpretation: no real meaning, just flickers of settings and emotions. The taste of everything below (the score) spawned thoughts of colors and elements and people and emotions, though with the text I decided to keep it simply about the food and the beverages. The romantic music and singing is the rendering of the emotions I felt, while my banal reading was the actual act of consumption. I recorded the text while lying down in my childhood bedroom in Goleta, California, half asleep just trying to get it over with. It was a fitting situation for the piece: forced beauty."

Edition of 200, signed and numbered with 132-page 6" x 9" book.

Review: Palaces of Pity by Malibu is a follow-up, or to be fully correct, a sequel, to One Life. It is an ambient album that is awash with overwhelming euphoria, hope, joy and wonderment. From elegant choral chambers to delayed guitars and delicate cello it is a record of quiet magnificent and real artistry. Vaporous trails are left lingering in the air, phased strings take your mind away and it's hard to know if this is an ancient recording from a towering old church or a vision from a future world. Wordless vocal coos add extra intrigue to this most narcotic and captivating record.
