Review: Greyscale unveils its latest endeavour, the Spectrum Series, as a way to continue to evolve its offerings and this time it is with something that makes a vibrant departure from its traditional black-and-white aesthetic. The inaugural release features the iconic Lithuanian dub track 'Kasdienybes Sventykla' by grad_u & Eazystyle MC as a way of commemorating its 15th anniversary. It came as a double CD in 2011 but now gets a first vinyl pressing on a nice 10" slab of wax. The track itself taps into the earliest roots of dub in the 70s and traces a line through the 80s with its heavyweight drums and endlessly echoing bass topped by great mic work. It's a dynamic and powerful track with a strong build up and a devastating, menacing sound. The second track, 'Kaldur Klaki,' is a loopy, hard and fast, percussive, tribal track. It's a peak time track with an organic, drummy sound. The third track, 'The Bad', is a 90s German style track with a cool beat and a storming sound. Review: It's spinbacks, rave stabs and "can't you see"s galore on Injectionz' debut tenth hardcore dubplate, released on their eponymous imprint. Faithful to the form, this is a debut that won't fail to impress even the more seasoned veterans of the scene either; intro track 'Gotta Believe' seems to make light of its debutante's ambition by way of slapstick scat samples and even an "oh my god, I'm a DJ" interjection, then spraying the 'phones with scratches, cutups and repitchings at a blasphemous rate of fire. B-sider 'Rockin' The House' demonstrates a laxer tendency, proving that many different auditory vaccinations are indeed on offer to the would-be fan.

Review: Tokyo-based post/math-rock noodlers Toe have a habit of cleansing the palette of each subsequent full-length they release with a follow up EP. Just like 2005's debut album The Book About My Idle Plot On A Vague Anxiety was followed up with 2006's New Sentimentality EP, the group would return three years on from their stellar 2009 sophomore effort For Long Tomorrow with 2012's The Future Is Now. From the twinkling emo-inflected shoegazing noodles of 'Run For Word' to the more acoustic-driven psych-jazz of 'Ordinary Days', the four cuts purposefully meander and fuse differing elements from the band's arsenal whilst somehow increasing the dense technicality to absurd, near impenetrable levels.

The latest in its cultured Edits series finds a brace of new hot takes from Dave Mathmos. Review: The Det 313 label is kicking off the new year with a bang and dropping a pair of brilliant new EPs on the same day in late January. This one is a reissue of the esteemed Gary Martin's 'Pimping People In High Places' on 10". It's the Woodword Ave alternative mix that kicks off and is a rough and ready percussive techno looper with hefty basslines underlapping and propping up the floor. 'The Medusa Touch' is a more wily and synth laced-late night jaunt with mystic energy and acid details that make it a deep and dramatic cut with real dynamism.

Review: Last year, the Expansions label kicked off a wonderfully intriguing 10" series featuring classics from soul music's rich canon complemented by contemporary cover versions and so far it's seen Blue Note troupe Quasimode tee off against Johnny Hammond and Bembe Segue challenge Norman Connors. A third edition duly arrives and hints Expansions are really enjoying the creative challenge the concept allows them with the jazz funk classic "Zaius" from Eddie Russ joined by a cover from the celebrated UK funk veterans Incognito. Originally appearing on the 1976 LP See The Light, "Zaius" is a blinding example of why Russ is described a master of the keyboard and it's complemented well by Incognito's B Side cover which appears on vinyl for the first time. Review: After many years turning out 12"s, Klasse Wrecks has decided to serve up a first-ever 10" and they give the honour to Mr. Ho. His '000 Baby' is a delightfully widescreen sound - a post-rave mix of comedown electronics, dusty breakbeats and soothing ambient pads with some smart vocal samples drifting like wispy clouds. On the flipside, we're treated to and OM Unit remix that beefs things up and speeds up the drums. The percussion too is more defined and the energy levels ramped up with deft 808 bass and searching acidic leads. A nice yin to the A-side's yang.

Review: Felt may not have made the longest lasting impact on the common conscious, but nevertheless the UK indie set struck a real chord, and are still widely seen as cult icons among those who know. As part of the deserved celebrations for equally revered label Cherry Red's 45th anniversary, we can now dive into one of the band's finest moments, with this double-A 45" single. Opening on 'Primitive Painters' it doesn't take long to realise where we are on the sonic scale. Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Fraser in a duet with frontman Lawrence, it's rightly considered one of the great British singles of the 1980s and one of the decade's most powerful collaborations, saturated in shoegaze and dream pop while still being resolutely part of a New Wave. Meanwhile, 'Penelope Tree' on the flip opts for a janglier but no less epic feeling.

On this top-notch ten-inch single - his first for NOUN - he's in full on techno mode, puffing out his chest and striding confidently towards peak-time dancefloors. The legendary Dutch producer first offers up 'Infinite Voyage', a slamming, warehouse-ready workout that wraps buzzing, mutant electronic lead lines and star-fall around stomping beats and booming bass. On 'Straight UP' he opts for darker, bolder, stabbing bass, alien-sounding bleeps, jazzy synth stabs, heady aural textures and another tough-as-teak drum track.

Review: Randy's Vintage Dub Selection originally came up as a collection of dub versions of classic reggae cuts from the legendary Randy's Studio 17 in Kingston, Jamaica. The likes of King Tubby, Errol Thompson, Lee Perry, you name it, all recorded there, making it a veritable treasure-trove of dub history. Now comes a new 7" paying tribute to the Studio via the Randy's-adjacent Gary Hall-run label - Jamaican Recordings. The A-side here is a rare dub cut to 'Natty Dread Ah No Mickey Mouse', which was itself a cut to 'Natty Dread Won't Get A Witness', over the classic Bangarang rhythm. Meanwhile, the B spans two versions: 'Dub Feeling', recorded in 1969 and a dub of Slim Smith's 'This Feeling', and 'It's A Dubbing Lie', which reworks Ernest Wilson's 'It's No Lie', also from the very same year.

Review: Dubshop.nl is on a roll at this early stage in its life and for the third outing from the Dutch dub lovers we get a nice white 10" with some real heady tackle from The Disciples. Originally produced and mixed by Russ D. at the Backyard Studio and dropped in 2004 on Boom Shaka, this reissue brings two softer delights back to the fore. 'Oh Jah Jah' is a nice, slow-motion churner with mystic flute leads and natty chords. It stretches out over eight mesmerising minutes and the flipside 'Jah Militia Dub' slows things down with amore organic feel and rich percussion.

Review: Appalachian style old-time banjo and guitar player Nora Brown joins with award winning fiddler Stephanie Coleman (of Uncle Earl) to present their new EP, 'Lady Of The Lake', featuring two tight-harmony songs and two instrumental duets. Brought together by Brooklyn's tight-knit old-time music community, Brown and Coleman share a rich musical partnership; Nora is a singer and banjo player, while Stephanie is an award-winning old-time fiddler. 'Lady Of The Lake' is the first time Nora and Stephanie have recorded together since Nora's 2019 debut album Cinnamon Tree; the EP comes in four short movements, beginning with an instrumental congregative ballad in the title track, while moving into the steady movements of 'Gone So Long', on which Brown and Coleman duet and harmonise with ease, and into 'Copper Kettle', a more ruminative meditation on the North-Eastern domestic; jugs filling, whiskey-crafting, pales sloshing and lying supine by junipers.

Review: Two of drum & bass' most rabid underdogs, Nookie and DJ Crystl, the latter returning only recently after a two decade hiatus - make a triumphant return to the foreground, joining Suburban Architecture in aid of the third edition of their Architecture Dubs series. A fresh fusion of old and new motifs, Nookie's remix of 'Renegade Horns' pays homage to a select juncture in the genre's evolution, recalling the era of "intelligent" drum & bass while nonetheless playing into the freshness and cleanliness that could only ever have surfaced after the 2010s. Crystl's version of 'New Horizons', meanwhile, is more refractive and dreamy, taking its required time to bask in its artisanal padwork, in contrast to its raw b-boy sample and frank Amen breaks.

Review: Breakbeat maestro Hooverian Blur returns for Triple Menace, an EP which, as the title suggests, spans choppy breaks and dastardly bleeps-and-bloops for a 2HKO wielding a stylistic drum & bass greatsword. A singular 10" record houses these twin audio-imps, with the titular 'Triple Menace' occupying older-skool junglist territories, and the latter bringing things forward in time to a future-soundsy rave minimalizer.

Review: Daniel Avery's heartfelt tribute to the late, great Andrew Weatherall, the melancholic masterpiece that is 'Lone Swordsmen', was one of the standout tracks on his most recent album, the critically acclaimed Ultra Truth. Here the track returns in remixed form, with Throbbing Gristle's Chris Carter putting his spin on Avery's bittersweet, late-90s style IDM gem. Carter's version is a touch warmer and more percussively up-beat, with Avery's lilting lead lines, poignant melodies and glistening electronic motifs rising above a slipped breakbeat and moody bass. It's an excellent remix all told, and a fine example of how to rework on already excellent track to enhance its key features.

On his latest release, 'Particular Angle', he delivers two tracks that showcase his diverse influences and skills. On the title track, he blends new roots, grime and dub techno into a mesmerising soundscape that is both heavy and hypnotic. On the B-side cut 'Blurring Off Into Its Opposite' he creates an atmospheric ambient journey that draws inspiration from Gil Melle's soundtrack for The Andromeda Strain. Review: Bernard Cumberbatch - presumably no relation to actor Benedict - and Garnett Cross are Aquizi, the dub duo fromed in the early 80s and Aiwa label mainstays. Their most notable 12" - aside from maybe 1981's 'Merry Christmas' was 'Kunte Kinte' earlier in the same year. It is a bit of a collector's fav that has more than held its value over the ensuing 40+ years. Driven by lazy dub swagger and carefree keys, it's a lovers rock outing peppered with toms and hits and plenty of echoing depths. Flip it over for version if you want something that will boggle the brain more with its endless mixing board effects.

Review: This new and unique one-sided 10" is a companion to the PMA EP by B-2DEP'T released on this Saisei label earlier in the year. It's as raw and frazzled as electro gets frankly, with B-2DEP'T heading off to the depths of the galaxy where snappy snares ride on crispy drum breaks. There are occult-like synth lines weaving their way in and out and a dark filtered vocal bring the menace and paranoid energy that keeps this one so enthralling. Review: It's hard to refer to Cocoon without calling it 'mighty' because the now 20+ year old label run by Sven Vath is one of European techno's most prominent. It is synonymous with colourful parties all over the world but still does a great job of serving up fresh sounds too. Two mainstays combine for this one with Defekt and Extrawelt cooking up 'Cell Sync' which is dark and menacing, with rigid drum loops and menacing synths. 'In The Space Of' has more molten synth modulations layered up to a ghoulish effect over slamming drums. It's peak time stuff, for sure.

Review: Jurgen Paape has a brilliantly characterful sound and wrote one of our favourite silly records in 'Ofterschwang' some 13 years ago (go check it out, it's brilliant.) We're glad to hear some new music from the long time Kompakt legend and co-founder and once again it's not what you would expect. 'Allein' is a downbeat piece with oriental melodies and gently plucked strings over warm bass. It's not for the club, that is for sure, but the flip side version 'Allein In Italien' sure is. This one is a chugging and brit Italo disco number with retro 80s synth sounds and plenty of joyous grooves.
