Review: "In Rainbows", Radiohead's seventh album, finally gets a physical release! It's one thing downloading this landmark album, but to actually hold this is something special. Not only do you get increased sound quality, but you also get the amazing artwork from Stanley Donwood. This album includes "Nude", a live favourite for many years that was originally written during the "OK Computer" sessions. More minimal that their "Kid A" period, "In Rainbows" does something that very few albums have done - its sound is distinct from previous Radiohead albums, but is still clearly Radiohead. Hail to the kings, they are back on top form.

Review: They're the biggest but most hated band on the planet, but that will never stop Coldplay. The band has long been at the top of the pop-rock world and once again Music of the Spheres is likely to keep them there. It is an album rather less wrought with emotional tension than they are known for but still has one eye firmly on the cosmos, like much of their material. In fact, there is a loose concept here that revolves around a distant solar system. The lead single, 'My Universe,' features K-pop kings BTS and is already a number one, and the rest of the tunes are so unashamedly big they will likely follow.

Review: Gaucho was the seventh studio album from soft-pop-rock-jazzists and yacht rock pioneers Steely Dan. Released in 1980, they would embark on a tour to mark the record's arrival, and then vanish for 20 years. Or at least go on extended hiatus. That's not surprising, given the back story here, with widespread creative disagreements and a three-way legal battle with MCA and Warner Bros ensuing. And an original budget blown by the sheer scope of 42 musicians contributing to the work. The Lost Gaucho is almost an unplugged version of all that. These are the alternative versions recorded in the early sessions that led to the final LP. Broadcast on radio as part of the promotional campaign, they've been compiled on this joyfully smooth and seductive package, which fans need in their lives.

Review: Two years on from Tom Waits' landmark Swordfishtrombones and the jazz cat-turned staunch experimentalist continued to explore the roads less travelled with Rain Dogs. Originally released via the seminal Island Records in 1985, if the preceding album felt expansive, the follow up broadens horizons even further, inviting luminaries Keith Richards and Marc Ribot to get in on the action, although neither come close to even sharing the spotlight with the real star of the show. Spanning New Orleans funeral march melancholy, old down and dirty blues rock, heart wrenching balladry, wild cinematic instrumentals, noir-ish pulp fiction storytelling, and more than a little of the Swordfish-style stomping oddness, it's a masterpiece. Perhaps what really sets this apart, though, is how these myriad styles, at least some of which could easily fall into caricature, feel and sound so authentic, making it impossible not to buy into.

Review: Say what you will about Black Sabbath founding father turned solo metal don Ozzy Osbourne, he has never come remotely close to giving up. Even as ill-health resulting from decades of living the ultimate rock 'n' roll lifestyle - alcohol, drugs, eating bats - has crept up on him. As this sentence is written, reports are hitting the entertainment press that he was spotted leaving a recording studio in Los Angeles with wife Sharon, the 73-year-old hell raiser looking frail but still clearly up to something.

Review: British rock band Atomic Rooster - made up from members of The Crazy World of Arthur Brown aka organ player Vincent Crane and sticks man Carl Palmer - had success in the 70s and 80s. They went through some mad stylistic changes in that time but remain best known for their hit singles 'Tomorrow Night' which hit number 11 in the UK charts and number four gem 'Devil's Answer', which both came in 1971. Neither of them feature on their self-titled album and debut from 1970 which itself made the Top 50 of the UK album charts, but it still packs a real punch with a prog rock feel.

Nevertheless, it happened, so by the time this record arrived there was a clear desire to show people that was a temporary setback.
At the same time, there's also an element of sending himself - and that reputation - up here, preempting the comic book caricature of Evil Ozzy we would come to recognise, and love, in later years. Musically, it's as it should be - atmospheric, eerie, and packed with the classical-leaning guitar work of the late, great Randy Rhoads. 3million copies sold and counting, say no more.

Review: Did Steely Dan go Bisto on us and save the best for last? Maybe, just maybe. While Pretzel Logic didn't mark the end of all things The Dan, it was the final album to feature the full lineup - Walter Becker, Donald Fagen, Denny Dias, Jim Hodder, and Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter (prior to the latter joining The Doobie Brothers). It was also the last to be released while the group were actively touring, and as such can be seen as something of a swan song. Perhaps Magnus Opus is a more appropriate turn of phrase. Critically acclaimed at the time, the record sees the jazz rockers opt to tone down the instrumentals that had cost them radio play with preceding LP, Countdown to Ecstasy, and instead focus on shorter, more direct and certainly catchier tunes. That's not to mean throwaway, mind, with praise lauded on the release at the time, when it was reissued in the late 1980s and remastered a decade or so later. Back again, it still has the same impact.

Review: British trumpeter and bandleader Ian Carr put out his most revered album in 1972. Its iconic fusion of jazz and rock has become a sought after rarity. Featured musicians include members of bands like Nucleus, Brian Auger's band, Soft Machine and Stan Tracy Group, and they all help lend the record a psychedelic, proggy aesthetic, with swirling melodies making for moody but funky tunes. Tracks like 'Mayday' put expressive solos and complex arrangements front and centre, while 'Suspension' is a more laidback joint for sinking into. Review: A whole series of XTC classics are being reissued right now and the latest is Mummer. It has been freshly cut at Loud Mastering and pressed up onto an eye waveringly good 200g vinyl. It was the sixth record from the British rock outfit and was released in 1983. Review: Royal Blood have had two UK number one albums, have sold over two million copies ad picks du pa global and critical fan base. They managed to blow all expectations out of the water last year with their 'Trouble's Coming' release and now the new album does it again. It has big riffs from Mike Kerr, vocals that range from raw and rock ready to more tender and soulful and grooves that can be hyper aggressive or more comforting. It's a real roller coaster ride that finishes with a rather surprising piano ballad. But then again, what would a Royal Blood record be without a surprise.

Review: The brilliantly ironically titled Money For Nothing album from Dire Straits was their great hits album from back in 1998. It came off the back of their hugely success 1985 long player Brotehrs in Arms and featured plenty of tracks from that record as well as the four others before that. 'Sultans of Swing', 'Romeo and Juliet', 'Private Investigations' and three of the five singles from 'Brothers in Arms' all feature and this special vinyl edition also has 'Telegraph Road (Live Remix)' which in the past was only issued on CD. 'Portobello Belle (Live)' is here too as a brand new mix.

Review: "I'm somewhere between a pop artist and a jam band-maybe closer to pop artist," John Mayer recently told Kerwin Frost in a YouTube interview. Given the fact he makes a sideline as the touring guitarist for the Grateful Dead - a band vying for position as most ironically named given the length of their live history - and his latest record sounds like Sob Rock, in both title and sonics, it's not hard to see why he's come up with that kind of career summation.

Review: The 50th anniversary of Deja Vu by Crosby, Stills & Nash gets marked with this specially celebratory reissue. It has been remastered for the occasion and comes with original artwork. Back when this one was released first in March 1970 by Atlantic Records, the record soon went on to top the pop album chart for a week and generated three Top 40 singles. Review: Kiss' groundbreaking Creatures Of The Night was something of a shocker, as the band had taken a rather bold step in returning to a more heavyweight sound. The risk paid off, with the album becoming an instant classic and spawning no end of deluxe editions, one of which saw over 100 tracks pressed to a single box set. Review: Who needs commercial success, anyway? At least not in the Big Apple during the early-1970s - long before Manhattan became a millionaire's enclave and most of Brooklyn out-priced normal people. Review: XTC's cult 1984 album 'The Big Express' was essentially just that - a 'big expression' of brash indie noise, tempered by the shadow of the industrial old Wiltshire town in which the band grew up, Swindon. In true post-punk fashion, the band combined the electronic Linndrum with guitar, bass and vocals. Review: Mott The Hoople's original line up were on hand when the band went in to the BBC to record this live show for radio. It was back in 1970 and the set list they went for mixes up their Dylan-influenced ballads with plenty of more does eyed stoner rock sounds. Fans will recognise most of these tunes from various Mott the Hoople long players, although three of them were never actually on any record other than this one. The pressing is of great quality given the age of the recording and is a must for fans with extensive sleeve notes.

In 1990 he was taking new paths to rejuvenate his creativity and before he embarked on it fully he headed out on his 1990 Sound+Vision Tour which was to be one final goodbye to many of his most famous back catalogue hits. Review: Deep Purple are often mentioned in the same breath as the main innovators of heavy Metal, like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, but as this collection of radio transmissions from 1968 shows, they have a much closer relation to the good old fashioned funk than either of those rivals. Ian Paice's drumming on opening track 'Speed King' makes the track much more suitable for dancing to than headbanging, and we challenge you to hear their version of Billie Joe Royal's 'Hush' without thinking of The Charlatans' 'The Only One I Know'. With a generally relaxed feel about this cover version-heavy selection - Hendrix's 'Hey Joe' and The Beatles 'Hush' also get the Purple treatment - this is a different and altogether more accessible slant on the legends that you might not have even guessed existed.

Review: A great example of how critics are often not all right, when Jack Johnson dropped his third studio album, In Between Dreams, music writers the world over adopted partisan positions. Some believed this definitely was worthy of catapulting him from Pretty Famous Acoustic Surf Rock Guy Popular With People Who Went Travelling Post-Millennium, to global superstar. Other were pretty non-plussed.
Suffice to say, we all know who won in the end - Jack Johnson. Review: Grammy-nominated rockers Rival Sons punch hard on their latest album - perhaps harder than they have before. But then that's exactly the outfit's modus, with guitarist Scott Holiday making it clear that the band are resolutely determined to progress, develop, step up, and push forward with every effort they bestow on us. To say that's audible when casting an ear over their back catalogue would be an understatement, not that preceding efforts like Hollow Bones, Great Western Valkyrie and Feral Roots weren't all commendable. Nevertheless, there's definitely growth evident when taking a listen now compared with back then. Running from full throttle, sweat inducing, guitar-fuelled adrenalin in song form, through to sweeping and grandiose tracks and onto more reflective acoustic moments, in world that often feels slightly lacking in terms of real modern rock greats, this is one example of where you can still find plenty of life.
