Review: Analogue Productions are the label to take on the task of producing high-end editions of Steely Dan's albums, given their obsessive approach to remastering, pressing and every single minute detail of the production process. After all, this was the band who popularised such an approach in the studio. Katy Lied was the fourth album from Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, and it's as sensational as any Dan album from the rollicking romp of 'Black Friday' to the slinky boogie of 'Daddy Don't Live In That New York City No More'. This Super Audio CD version is surely the true audiophile's choice, free of any sonic interference and with every speck of sound rendered in crystal clear quality, just how the Dan would want it.

Review: If ever there was a band destined to get the Analogue Productions treatment, it's surely Steely Dan. The go-to group for audioophiles, yacht-sailing dreamers and frankly everyone in the whole damn world, the Dan's highly-prized studio obsession deserves the finest possible fidelity. Originally released in 1980, Gaucho was Walter Becker and Donald Fagen's swansong until reuniting in 2000. Musically, it was a departure for the group as they honed their compositions into more patient, atmospheric pieces which held down a mood instead of striving for dramatic sweeps and shifts, but that doesn't detract one jot from the might of tunes such as 'Babylon Sisters' and the eternally funky 'Glamour Profession'. Now those songs sound the best they possibly could thanks to this exacting reproduction.

Review: The legend of the late great David Bowie will always live on, particularly with spectral releases like this still appearing on the regular. Rock 'n' Roll Star! vharts Bowie's journey to Ziggy Stardust across no fewer than six CDs and a blue-ray disc that include early home demos, radio sessions and live performances, session recordings, outtakes and alternate versions of tunes from his The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust record. Unreleased gems on the album include an alternate rendition of 'Lady Stardust,' an unheard version of the cherished 'Shadow Man,' and an upbeat interpretation of The Who's 'I Can't Explain.' Interestingly, Bowie later slowed down and covered this for the PIN-UPS album.

Review: We Have Dozens of Titles by Gastr Del Sol is a treasure trove for fans, offering a glimpse into the experimental post-rock pioneers' journey from their Bastro roots to their groundbreaking work as Gastr Del Sol. This collection, curated from their 1993-1998 recordings, shows their evolution into sonic explorers, pushing the boundaries of post-rock with influences from musique concrete and free improv. The unearthed CBC recording from Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville in 1997 is a highlight, featuring ethereal versions of familiar tracks like 'The Seasons Reverse' and 'Blues Subtitled No Sense of Wonder.''The live rendition of "Onion Orange' is a revelation, with Jim O'Rourke's kosmische synth waves intertwining seamlessly with David Grubbs' intricate guitar work. Additionally, the inclusion of rarities like 'The Harp Factory On Lake Street' and tracks from various compilations adds depth to the collection. Each track, whether a live performance or a studio recording, has been meticulously mastered or remastered by O'Rourke, enhancing the listening experience. We Have Dozens of Titles not only fills in gaps in Gastr Del Sol's discography but also exemplifies their innovative approach to music-making.

Review: As The Who blazed their trail in the tumultuous sixties, John Entwistle, known as The Ox, showcased his prowess not just as a bassist but also as a skilled songwriter. Despite his satisfaction in The Who's success, Entwistle expressed frustration within the band about the limited opportunities for his compositions. Consequently, Track Records greenlit a solo album project. By 1970's end, Entwistle amassed enough material for his debut album, the first CD in this 6-CD box set. This comprehensive collection includes all six of Entwistle's solo albums along with 29 bonus tracks, featuring collaborations with Joe Walsh, Peter Frampton, and other notable artists.

Review: Mark Knopfler's 2023 album, One Deep River, is a written diary through the heartland of Americana. Demonstrating his mastery of storytelling, Knopfler intricately weaves tales of life's trials and triumphs, evoking a poignant reflection on the human experience. Each track showcases Knopfler's signature guitar work and soulful vocals, transporting listeners to dusty highways and riverbanks at twilight. From the introspective 'Beneath a Prairie Moon' to the bluesy swagger of 'Ride On Across,' Knopfler's ability to paint vivid landscapes through music is unparalleled. 'One Deep River' resonates with timeless allure, embodying Knopfler's status as a guitar troubadour of the modern era.

Review: Mark Knopfler's One Deep River delivers a steady stream of timeless classics, featuring his signature blend of poetic lyricism and exquisite guitar work. As the tenth solo album released on his own label, British Grove via EMI, Knopfler continues to captivate with his warm vocals and masterful compositions. The album's lead single, 'Ahead Of The Game,' sets the tone with a melancholic narrative, possibly autobiographical, over a classic Knopfler riff. Title track 'One Deep River' taps into Knopfler's emotional ties to his hometown of Newcastle, particularly the Tyne River. This connection to childhood memories imbues the album with a sense of nostalgia and introspection, echoed in each meticulously crafted song. Produced alongside longtime collaborator Guy Fletcher, the album exudes sophistication and depth, with Knopfler's guitar textures and evocative storytelling taking center stage.

Review: When Mick Mars stepped back from touring with Motley Crue, it seemed like the end of an era. Really, it was the beginning of a new one. The legendary guitarist, whose riffs, solos and overall devastatingly heavy sound powered the L.A. icons through four decades of world-conquering, multi-platinum sonic mayhem is, as he demonstrates on his debut solo effort, still a serious force to be reckoned with. Only now, listeners are reckoning with more Mars than ever before. On the aptly-titled The Other Side of Mars, fans get that vision in its full, multifarious glory. To be sure, there are plenty of characteristically riff-tastic, tough-as-nails hard-rock anthems, but The Other Side of Mars also shows the 71-year-old guitarist heading into new and uncharted territory, tearing through caustic, modern metal ('Broken On The Inside"', conjuring gothic-tinged soundscapes ('Undone'), digging into anguished, slow-burning power balladry ('Killing Breed"' and unspooling bluesy, cinematic instrumental workouts (the album-closing guitar showcase, 'L.A. Noir'). The music throughout the ten-track collection, meanwhile, is otherwise studded with slide guitars, violins, violas, keyboards, glitchy freak-outs and all manner of sonic surprises.

Review: Reissued once more on CD for fans still waiting to get their hands on a copy, The Royal Scam is the fifth studio album by American rock band Steely Dan. Representing their outward movement into more conceptual underpinnings, the album incorporated expansive jazz and funk influences here, all littering the album with myriad, disparate references to various historical figures and events. Most notably, SD reveal an obsession with Owsley Stanley - the cult figure and notorious clandestine chemist whose secret manufacturing efforts produced the vast bulk of LSD still on the global market today - as well as other prehistoric and arcane references.

Review: Bad Boy Troy is the musical moniker of one Troy Tipton, whose ambition to make rollicking guitar music extends back to the age of six, at which point he began to take after famous guitarists such as Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck and Paul Rogers. A lifelong stint of touring with the likes of Black Sabbath, Cheap Trick, Whitesnake and Ozark Mountain Daredevils has led up to this moment, at which the headstock heartthrob now releases this globetrotting new album on CD. Huge guitar sludge-waves are heard in full swing on cover versions like 'Another Brick In The Wall' (Pink Floyd) and 'Bad Ass Boy', as the seasoned axe daredevil swears his dread oath to never sleeping, always shredding.

Review: Dire Straits bowed out in style when they released On Every Street in 1991. They'd taken their time since the knockout success of Brothers In Arms, waiting six years to deliver a follow-up which would satisfy fans of their inimitable sound. Mark Knopfler's dusky tones weave many a tale, and there's that pervading sentimental mood hanging over the record like a Dire Straits album should have, but there's also some of those Southern boogie rhythm sections to lock onto, not least on the drawn out splendour of 'Calling Elvis'. Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab are going all-out on the reissue treatment for this edition, presented in a gatefold sleeve on Super Audio CD.

Review: It's fairly bold to call your album The Legendary Sessions but few could argue that this album certainly does capture some legendary sessions. They are previously unreleased recordings that stem from the iconic Jimi Hendrix and Traffic becoming friends in 1967. They were both innovates, both technical, and both progressive with what they did and that bares out across this fascinating album. It was captured between 1968 and 1970 and is full of freeform jams with atonal structures and shifting tempos as well as great complementary interplay between Jimi and Chris Wood.

As final hurrahs go, it's quietly impressive, with the American singer-songwriter - backed by the Coral Reefer Band and a smattering of high-profile guest performers - delivering a jaunty, All-American blend of horn-sporting blues-rock, psych-country, semi-acoustic sing-alongs and tropical swamp-funk. Highlights include the humid, steel pan-sporting dance-rock of 'My Gummie Just Kicked In' (featuring fellow celebrity stoner and all-round legend Paul McCartney on bass), the fiddle-sporting hoedown that is 'Close Calls', the cheery 'Like My Dog' and Emylou Harris collaboration 'Mozambique'.

Hackney Diamonds came with its own playful viral marketing campaign and lead single 'Angry' which won plenty of plaudits. Given the high-tech nature of the record - much effort was made by Giles Martin, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr to piece it together and make it sound special - many Beatles fans will find this appealing. The song itself has divided opinion, though there's no doubt that its blend of group harmony vocals, swelling strings, and typically jangly Beatles grooves leaves a lasting impression. It comes backed with a fresh, cleaned-up stereo mix of the band's debut UK single, 'Love Me Do', which benefits from greater sonic clarity and instrument separation.

Review: Peter Gabriel's i/o is an album that took shape over a fairly long period of time and it involves a wide and long list of cast members. It is packed with plenty of moments of vocal beauty and gravity, with Gabriel's iconic song writing abilities front and centre as he tackles a rich array of tough provoking subjects that confront us all. Moods range from hopefully and optimistic, to more gloomy and despondent with top contributions from Richard Russell, pianist Tom Cawley, trumpeters Josh Shpak and Paolo Fresu, cellist Linnea Olsson and keyboard player Don E.

Review: Bruce Springsteen's celebrated debut album returns to stores, this time in a "hybrid" remastered form, which features both regular and "super audio" versions. Released way back in January 1973, the set announced the arrival of "the Boss" as a future great, received warm reviews (at the time, Rolling Stone critic Lester Bangs highlighted the dexterity and social commentary of Springsteen's lyrics), and is now considered one of the greatest debut albums of all time. It has certainly held up well, with Springsteen and has band delivering a mixture of bluesy rockers, semi-acoustic treats, surprisingly funky workouts, and songs that still sound as fresh and potent as they did half a century ago.

Review: John Luongo is a Bostonian disco legend and although his contributions to the proliferation of the sound are more than noted within the industry, his recognition among regular old music fans seems, as his own estate puts it, "to have slipped through the cracks of dance history." Demon hopes to change all that with this new multi-format box set of his music, which aims to memorialize him as one of the most influential DJs and mixers of his day. Luongo's many credits include remixes of Jackie Moore's 'This Time Baby', 'Vertigo / Relight My Fire' by Dan Hartman and Patti Labelle's 'Music Is My Way Of Life'. Luongo also went on to establish a production career in his own right, and his legacy is more than cemented here. This box set compiles his most striking tracks in a 4xCD compilation, as well as many other trinkets and rarities including a 32-page booklet and an in-depth essay from Alexis Petridis.

Love Me Do (2023 mix)
Review: Billed as "the last Beatles song", though originally stemming from a solo piano home demo recorded by John Lennon in 1979, 'Now & Then' was first considered to be used as the band's third reunion single for their 1995-96 retrospective The Beatles Anthology, following 'Free As A Bird' and 'Real Love'. Shelved for decades before eventually being completed by Lennon's surviving bandmates, the recording now finally sees the light of day, on a variety of limited double A-side 7" vinyl complimented by the band's debut single 'Love Me Do', as well as this CD single and retroactively being included on the tracklist for the upcoming half-speed remaster of their 1967-1970 Blue Album compilation. With additionally penned lyrics from McCartney, and Lennon's voice extracted from the original demo recording using the same AI-backed audio restoration technology that was commissioned by director Peter Jackson for his acclaimed 2021 documentary The Beatles: Get Back, this is one final slice of audible greatness.

Review: As we travel back through Prince's monumental legacy from album to album, the abundant revelations contained within the deluxe editions take us deeper into his genius than any fan dared to dream. Now it's the turn of Diamonds & Pearls, the 1991 opus which brought us such massive hits as the title track, 'Cream' and 'Gett Off'. There's not a single miss on the original album which fills out disc one of this double CD version, while disc two takes us on a wild ride through extended versions, B-sides and remixes aplenty. It's the sound of Prince fully embracing the 90s, from guest raps to house beats and beyond, but as ever it could only come from the mind of one particularly purple man.

Review: With Elton John having played his final gig in the UK - that celebrated appearance at Glastonbury back in June 2023 - there will no doubt be increased interest in the few live albums he has released. This one, which stretches out an entire performance (complete with audience interaction and oddball banter) across two CDs, hails from 1972, when he was just becoming the iconic artist we know and love today. That means a mix of early, glam-rock era favourites as well as a clutch of cuts that still get masses of plays today - think 'Daniel', 'Your Song' and the riotous 'Honky Cat'. There's also a killer cover of 'Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On' that shows Elton at his barnstorming showman best.

Review: It won't have passed you by that the world's longest running (and most commercially successful) rock band is back. The big news, of course, is that the Rolling Stones have recorded their first album of new material in 18 years, Hackney Diamonds, which will appear in stores and online next month. To whet the appetite of fans old and young, they've served up 'Angry' - a one-track CD single that has been manufactured in relatively limited numbers. To be fair to the old timers, it's genuinely 'prime' Stones fair - all gnarly rhythm and blues riffs and sprawling solos (courtesy of Keith Richards, of course), yelp-along vocals from the effervescent Mick Jagger, and a suitably sturdy rhythm section. A return to form, as many critics have already pointed out.

Review: The gigs The Doors played at The Matrix in March 1967 are a seminal part of their mythology, given they were recorded when the band were yet to breakthrough beyond Southern California and were pretty much playing to an empty room. The idea of such a legendary band in such humble times is one thing, but crucially this three-night stint was captured in stunning quality by recording engineer Peter Abram. Between the stretch of their recently released debut and some of the future classics they would become adored for, not to mention some incendiary covers, this three-disc edition brings forth more of the material from Abram's coveted tapes, making this a must-grab for Doors devotees everywhere.

Review: American rock band Tommy James & the Shondells formed in Michigan in 1964 and are best known for their number one hits 'Hanky Panky' and 'Crimson and Clover' but released plenty more music. The complete selection of it is now assembled on this bumper Celebration: The Complete Roulette Recordings 1966-1973 which comes across whopping six CDs. There are over 130 tracks in all and 16 tracks that were only ever released on 45s or were previously unissued until earlier compilations were released on CD. It traces the evolution of the band from bubblegum pop through to psychedelic albums and more introspective later works.

Review: Confounding critics (and, to a lesser extent, fans) has long been one of Dexy's calling cards, though even by Kevin Rowland and company's standards The Feminine Divine is a surprising set. The surprise lies not in the fact that it exists at all (Rowland publicly exclaimed that he was "done with music" back in 2016), but the sound of the music on show. Alongside the kind of horn-heavy 1970s soul that delighted fans in their early 80s heyday, The Feminine Divine also includes Serge Gainsbourg-esque spoken word vocals, Prince-inspired electrofunk, slow-motion breakbeats, hands-in-the-air house pianos and nods towards the kaleidoscopic, saucer-eyed rush of Ibiza-inspired Balearica. It's hugely entertaining and, for all the welcome musical surprises, still very much a Dexys album.

A month before he passed away in December 2002, Joe Strummer delivered what turned out to be his final performance - a benefit gig for striking firefighters at Acton Town Hall, where he was backed by his then band the Mescaleros. This must-have CD presents that performance in its entirety, including the infamous ending - where Strummer's former Clash bandmate Mick Jones emerged from the audience to join him on stage for performances of 'Bank Robber', 'White Riot' and 'London's Burning' (it was the first time the two had performed together since 1983). Recorded for a radio broadcast, the gig was undoubtedly special, with Strummer and his bandmates powering through classics including 'Police & Thieves', '(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais' and 'I Fought The Law'.

Review: Few Frank Zappa fans ever dreamt there could be a sequel to 1969's Hot Rats. In the maverick's long and tangled legacy of recorded music, there's a lot to take in but Hot Rats is up there as a universal agreed classic. Much has been said about the vast swathes of unreleased studio sessions and songs languishing in Zappa's vaults, and Funky Nothingness is the product of just one attempt to piece together an entirely never-before heard album from one of the great surrealist rock-fusion renegades. Drawn from multiple sources but all recorded in 1970, this is a labour of love for those in charge of the job, and it will be a truly unthinkable gift for the legions of Zappa devotees out there - not least in Vilnius where they petitioned to have a statue of the man erected in the city.

Review: Buoyed by the international success of the band's unique blend of psychedelic Latin rock and jazz fusion, Santana landed in the UK in 1976 for a series of concerts. One of these, at London's Hammersmith Odeon, was captured on tape for broadcast on British radio. It's this incendiary and freewheeling set - or at least a big portion of it - that's presented on this fantastic live album. Starting with a rendition of their heavy, funked-up, Latin-tinged take on Fleetwood Mac's 'Black Magic Woman', Carlos Santana - whose expressive, stretched-out guitar solos take centre stage throughout - and his band-mates laid down exceptional, extended and partly improvised versions of such classics as 'Gypsy Queen', 'Revelations' and - most explosively - 'Soul Sacrifice'.

Review: Although it's only appearing now, Bob Dylan's 40th album was recorded back in 2021 and formed the soundtrack to Alma Ha'rel's intimate concert film, Shadow Kingdom: The Early Songs of Bob Dylan. The concert depicted in the film, in which Dylan ran through songs from the first part of his career on a sound stage in Los Angeles, was something of a fiction, with the actual recordings featured being captured in a West Hollywood studio. That's what we get here: Dylan delivering decidedly bluesy folk and Americana interpretations of songs from the formative years of his career, ably supported by a cast of musician friends including Don Was (up-tight bass) and country legend T-Bone Burnett (guitar). Dylan's superb songs have never sounded better.

It features Waters and company delivering gravel-voiced interpretations of The Wall favourites 'Mother' and 'Vera' (the latter segueing into 'Bring The Boys Back Home'), two tracks from Floyd's 1983 set The Final Cut, and Waters solo favourite 'The Bravery of Being Out of Range'. Most significantly, it also includes his re-imagining of 'Comfortably Numb', which Waters has re-framed as a slow, droning, trippy and ultra-atmospheric treat. As you'd expect, there are no Dave Gilmour style guitar solos in sight!

Review: It's been 17 years since we were last treated to a live album from Neil Young and Crazy Horse, and that was a recording of a legendary performance at Filimore East from 1970. This set, which features the band's later line-up, was recorded on the main stage at the Phoenix Festival (remember that) back in 1996 and first broadcast on UK radio shortly afterwards. It's a typically dynamic performance, captured with full crowd reaction for added atmosphere, with the legendary Canadian-American musician and his band-mates laying down terrific versions of favourites including 'Heart of Gold', 'Rockin' In The Free World', 'Cinnamon Girl' and 'Like a Hurricane'.

Review: A month before he passed away in December 2002, Joe Strummer delivered what turned out to be his final performance - a benefit gig for striking firefighters at Acton Town Hall, where he was backed by his then band the Mescaleros.

Review: Oftentimes those albums that people say are the best ever are not even close but one we think actually deserves its place amongst such polls is this one. Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon took prog rock to its logical conclusion and remains an epic listen decades later. Fans will always soak up a newly remastered or extra deluxe version and, of course, any live recordings of their favourite records. And that's what we have here from a legendary show at the building now known as Wembley Arena in 1974, on CD, and magnificent to get lost in.

Review: The 'Pacific Breeze' series documents the best of Japanese city pop, the genre that took such metropoli as Kyoto and Osaka by storm in the mid 1970s and from then on. With blistering optimism, the tracks on this third compilation blend funk, surf and R&B elements, forming a heady stew of music, all of which has been remastered in only the most pristine multi-channel quality. Choice cuts include Miho Fujiwara's 1986 hit 'Heartbeat' - which has all the best flavours of disco, funk and electro combined to form a cutesy stew - and the Pizzicato Five's lesser-known industrial-edged 'Boy Meets Girl'.

Review: In 1971, to promote the release of the (now considered classic) Rough and Ready album, the second incarnation of the Jeff Beck Group - vocalist Rod Stewart included - headed out on tour. This fine double-disc collection rounds up some of the best recordings of live performances from that period, including a swathe of cuts captured at the Ruisrock Festival in Finland, and various radio and TV sessions - including most of the tracks from a later 1972 BBC 'in concert' performance. It's lively, energetic, rabble-rousing stuff all told, with Beck and his cohorts laying down weighty rhythm & blues and heavy rock takes on classic cuts and album tracks. There's also a sensational cover of Bill Withers' then fresh 'Ain't No Sunshine'.

Review: On 29 January 1972, Lou Reed, John Cale and Nico reunited on stage for the first time since the breakup of the Velvet Underground. The concert, which took place at Le Bataclan in Paris, became legendary - in part because bootleg recordings circulated for years before the set was eventually officially released in the 2000s. It remains a fine concert, with much-loved Velvet Underground staples being supplemented by group performances of solo songs from all three artists. There are some real gems stretched across the album, including inspired versions of 'Berlin', 'Heroin' (where Cale's viola catches the ear), 'All Tomorrow's Parties' (very dark, folksy and stripped-back) and 'Femme Fatale'.

Review: Newfoundland-based band The Neverland Express have long been fans of heavy rock icon Meatloaf, frequently delivering lightly extended and reimagined versions of his biggest hits in their live shows. Now they've gone one further and joined forces with singer Caleb Johnson - something of a star Stateside, since he's a previous winner of American Idol - to deliver their own interpretation of Meatloaf's much-loved 1977 album 'Bat Out Of Hell'. Many of their takes were apparently inspired by the way he performs the tracks at concerts. It's a whole heap of fun all told, with Johnson providing fittingly strong, emotive vocals over pleasingly heavy, grandiose takes on such familiar favourites as 'Bat Out of Hell', 'Paradise By The Dashboard Light' and 'For Cyring Out Loud'.

Review: This new live collection documents Cheap Trick live at The Whisky A Go Go, the historic West Hollywood nightclub, in 1977. Spliced together from a whopping set of recordings of five or so gigs performed at the venue, this limited quadruple CD pack captures the band at the incipient point of their fame - indeed, in the words of the hosting DJ Rodney Bingenheimer, "a lot of girls showed up", and this was right before they were about to "get a lot more famous" after touring with AC/DC. This was the year that the band released their debut album, and although that only laid the foudnations for the subsequent multi-platinum success they would enjoy, the trademark combination of memorable hooks and harder-edged rock riffs is very much fully formed here.

Review: Iggy Pop's new album Every Loser is his own treatise on punk necessarily requiring a "sense of hopelessness about it". Produced with musician and label owner Andrew Watt, Pop insists that this is "music that will beat the shit out of you". Relentlessly energetic and guitar-smashy, yet also somewhat clean, this is Iggy Pop's personal brand of rock n' roll for a new generation of listeners. Low-end centric and tempered by electronic production, it is full - as ever - of righteous anger.

Review: The 50th anniversary of Colin Blunstone's legendary opus One Year is marked with this new and expanded edition. The seance half of the record features a deeper diver into the introspective world of the artist with Colin singing and only his acoustic guitar for company. One Year is a record of lush instrumentation but sparse atmospheres that are always intimate. On the accompanying That Same Year the artist manages to draw you in ever closer for a more meditative sound. The record comes with liner notes by the man himself with unseen photos from the year he recorded this special oeuvre.

Review: Transmitting from 1983 and finally back in print again after a long time out of print, this is the sound of the former Beatles drummer teaming up with Eagles main man Joe Walsh for a set of tight, focused AOR rock with a touch of that playfulness that Starr brought to all his solo work. Highlights include the talkbox boogie of 'Be My Baby', which really brings Walsh's involvement to the fore, and the sparse, funk-informed 'I Keep Forgettin'. Clearly taking a shot at the spikier strains of alternative rock which were taking over in the early 80s, Old Wave is a treasure for fans of Starr to revisit after all this time.
