Review: Parlophone are embarking on a mammoth Bowie reissue campaign. 'Earthling' was the British pop starling's take on rock via drum n' bass and/or techno, coming as one of the classic emblems of 1990s "industrial" David Bowie. In our opinion, the best Bowie there ever was (the blond spiked hair, the earrings, the bad-boy chic...) made this album in a spate of deep inspiration. Bowie's take on acid house with 'Law', or his NIN-adjacent 'I'm Afraid Of Americans', constitute undoubtable, buzzing electronic gems.

Review: Whether or not you expected Liam Gallagher to turn his attention to the notoriously unpredictable world of Christmas music - there be demons - here the Mancunian icon gives it all he's got for the most messed up festive season in recent history.

With all proceeds going to Action for Children, Gallagher's point is pretty clear. Cutting to the chase as ever, the chorus asks us to consider what love really means. Here, it's the question of whether it can survive the worst of the world, phrasing that will resonate with many after a turbulent pandemic year. But fundamentally this can only make us consider what 2020 has been like without support, nurturing relationships or stability. With vocals soaring over simple piano chords, building to a rousing crescendo, here's hoping it's loud enough for people to remember the message long after the crisis has passed.

Review: While he lived a musical life that spanned from boogie to gospel before he passed away in 2016, Nairobi's David Waciuma didn't get to record much. He was known much more for his live performances with bands such as The Monks Experience then, later, Rapture Voices who he recorded these two records in the mid-70s. "Devil Go" is a thumping rhythm and blues call and response piece while "Jesu Kristo" hits with more of a frazzled bluesy funk. Both make you wish he recorded much more.

Review: This collection focuses in an era of Japanese music in which fashion, glamour and kitsch collided to create an addictive sound that morphed Westernized shapes into something kaleidoscopic and unique; the GS (or Group Sounds) phenomenon had seen Japanese artists attempting their own take on the high-energy onslaught of the Beatles and the British invasion, but elsewhere the female artists of the era were crafting a sound that tipped its hat to bossa nova, psych-pop and French ye-ye whilst maintaining a distinctly Japanese approach. Vibrant, eclectic and shot through with an insouciance and style rich even for this era, this is a compilation that sounds as exotic today as it did in the '60s.

Review: 2023 smash hit Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 finds Peter Quill still reeling from the loss of Gamora but rallying with his crew in an attempt to defend the universe. Should they not succeed it will prove a fateful mission and the dream of all this is captured in this original soundtrack. It features plenty of high-octane cuts, futuristic curveballs and even some rock and r&b from Alice Cooper and Faith No More respectively. Beastie Boys bring the heat with their classic 'No Sleep Till Brooklyn' and Florence & The Machine has still rarely bettered 'Dog Days Are Over.'

It saw them play some of their first-ever gigs stateside all across the United States and Canada after previously only playing the Altamont Free Concert in December 1969. Now you can hear some of the magical moments on this live album including tunes like 'Brown Sugar' and 'Gimme Shelter.'

Review: Pink Floyd's Roger Waters recorded The Lockdown Sessions at home during the COVID lockdowns between 2020 and 2021. Of course, intrigue was bound to spark up as to what Waters would be doing in this time, so we're not surprised supply has matched demand. What ensues is a mixture of exclusive live originals (mastered for this EP of course), and a handful of new versions of old Floyd classics. The 2022 version of 'Comfortably Numb' falls into the latter category, appearing on the B-side. Meanwhile, brand new cuts like 'Mother' and 'Two Suns In The Sunset' appear on the A, acting as Waters' new reflections on a world driven mad; the songs were first streamed live to fans during the incipient, isolated phase of Zoom-calling and make-do music performances from inside musicians' homes.

Strangers When We Meet (5:07)
Review: Parlophone are embarking on a mammoth Bowie reissue campaign. 'Outside' was another artifact of the artist's "industrial" '90s era. Unlike 'Earthling', it segwayed neatly between techno and dreamy art rock. For example: the self-titled track is a meditation on time via reverb-drenched band instrumentation, but is suddenly augmented by sampled breakbeats at the halfway mark. 'We Prick You' is similarly industrial, mumbly and weird, yet also just as catchy; this is Bowie's ode to outsider music, made in a weird spate of recording sessions wherein the artist vowed to commit a series of "art crimes".

Donald Fagen and Walter Becker's relentless pursuit of perfection and blue-eyed soul gifted us a whole heap of stunning albums, and their fiercely devoted fanbase would fight tooth and nail over which one gets the top spot. Our money would be on Aja though, given its enduring influence, its rich extended life through a whole host of sampling and the quite simply flawless run of songs, composition, production and beyond. It's one of the greatest albums out there, and you'd do well to grab a copy if you don't own it already.

Review: Beatconductor brings some disco goodness and stylish 80s reworks to this first volume of Rekworks on an unknown label. The opener is a version of The Beatles's Come Together' that is slow and steady and sublime. There are more freewheeling and textural guitar licked grooves on 'Tenement Funster' while '1969' is another sleazy indie groove and 'Jailbreak' gets low slung and filthy with its rude guitars and pristine drum work. These are sure to bring a different kind of dirty disco vibe to any dance floor.

Review: The 1982 glam-rock swan song for British rock group Roxy Music sees another limited reissue, a departure from the more edgy and abrasive sounds the group went for prior. The word that people constantly use to describe 'Avalon' is mature, in multiple senses of the word. At its core, the record is sensual and seductive make-out material, a 10 track package pining on romance named after the fantastical romantic gesture of King Arthur's body being sent to the titular island. It's plain to see why 'Avalon' is the band's most acclaimed and influential project, spawning off other New Wave acts like Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran and Tears for Fears. 'More Than This', the title track, has stood the test of time and is still playlisted and cited as one of the greatest British New Wave tracks of all time. 'Avalon' is accessible, seductive and, without doubt, a classic.

Review: RECOMMENDED
You can almost feel Ozzy Osbourne's determination to prove critics wrong on his solo work from this era. Diary of a Madman was released in 1981, just three years after the Prince of Darkness was thrown out of Black Sabbath due to the extent of his drink and drug problems. It should go without saying you have to take things pretty far to wind up an evictee from one of heavy metal's most full-throttle outfits. Nevertheless, it happened, so by the time this record arrived there was a clear desire to show people that was a temporary setback.

At the same time, there's also an element of sending himself - and that reputation - up here, preempting the comic book caricature of Evil Ozzy we would come to recognise, and love, in later years. Musically, it's as it should be - atmospheric, eerie, and packed with the classical-leaning guitar work of the late, great Randy Rhoads. 3million copies sold and counting, say no more.

Review: Amused To Death is the third studio album from Roger Waters outside of his work in Pink Floyd. As one of the fundamental creative forces in the prog behemoth, of course it's hard to separate his solo work from that most famous of bands, but this is indeed its own beast. At times it's an experimental space in which Waters uses space and minimalism to great effect, creating a foreboding sound peppered with speech samples and field recordings. There are of course plenty of more straightforward tracks too, like lead single 'What God Wants, Part 1'. This lavish issue of the 1992 album spreads the music out across four discs and comes in a box set format, a must-have for devoted Floyd and Waters collectors.

Review: "Noted for being "scared shitless" at the prospect of their upcoming Woodstock gig in 1969, Crosby, Stills Nash & Young were still fledgling performers at this point, this being only their second live appearance as a supergrounp. An evening gig, many of the festival attendees were on their way out; those who stayed for CSNY didn't regret it, though. Careening through originals like Still's 'Judy Blue Eyes' and Paul McCartney's 'Blackbird', the band later caused jaws to drop with the mid-show rollout of Neil Young. Prepare for lovingly remastered psych funk shoulder-swayers on this limited LP and CD bundle.

Let's face it, White Blood Cells is the moment when The White Stripes really broke the mould. It's a continuation of Jack and Meg's garage rock aesthetic as fine-tuned over two previous albums, and wholeheartedly a straight up rock 'n' roll album. But the elements are so perfectly primed it's impossible not to rank this as one of the greatest long form outings of this century, so far. And we're not alone - Rolling Stone even reckons it's among the best LPs of all time. Pity the fool who disagrees.

From the racing 'Fell in Love With A Girl', to the beguiling mystery of 'The Union Forever', 'I Think I Smell A Rat''s meld of mariachi riffs and mosh stomp and the emotional piano closer 'This Protector', to the innocent acoustic joy of 'We're Going To Be Friends', this is a masterclass of songwriting and arrangement, tracks that evolve, perplex, surprise, and - most importantly - entertain.

Hackney Diamonds is their forthcoming 26th studio album; the first studio album of original material by the band in 18 years and the final album to feature the drumming of rhythmic fixture Charlie Watts. Kicking off with its first promotional single 'Angry' - a song on which Jagger and Richards implore us not to get angry with them, perhaps owing to the frosty reception the Stones have sometimes received from squarer audiences over the years - the song sets the tone for what is sure to be a Stones completist's favourite and a welcome, high-energy return to blistering blues-rock form.

Ten band pout out their last album in 2011 and it featured some high profile guests including Jamie Muhoberac, Chris Chaney from Jane's Addiction, and Patrick Warren. Rob Cavallo (who has worked with bands like Green Day and Linkin Park and Jim Scott (The Rolling Stones, Red Hot Chili Peppers) both worked as co-producers on the album, which his a real pop rock classic with plenty of big, singalong tunes and epic air guitar ruffs. The songwriting was well praised at time of release and resonates to this day.

Review: To coincide with the release of Peter Jackson's new documentary series about the Beatles' ill-fated Get Back project, we're being treated to a string of new editions of the band's final album, Let It Be. The focal point is a brand new (and pleasingly sympathetic) stereo mix of the album from Giles Martin, who has cleaned up the vocals and instrumentation while paring back some of the saccharine orchestration that was controversially added by Phil Spector. With varying goodies coming with a selection of deluxe, superdeluxe etc editions, if you're a Beatles fan then you need this in your life.

Review: Somehow summoning the chutzpah and spirit to go bigger-better-faster-more on each one of their albums thus far, Muse here dish out another feverish, histrionic and mightily compelling collection of widescreen art-rock stompers. With the help of none other than 'Mutt' Lange in the producer's chair, the Teignmouth three-piece make a record with an epic scope and grandstanding aplomb that could put it in the ring with any of the stadium acts he's worked with in times of yore. With an anti-war theme surrounding ditties that loom large in the imagination, 'Drones' is another bold step for this unlikely trio.

Review: If anybody thought QOTSA's previous offering '...Like Clockwork' indicated a band trying out new ideas, they're making far greater leaps this time around. Die-hard fans might be a little confused by the enlistment of Mark Ronson as the album's producer, perhaps even more so by the strong influence on Josh Homme of Ronson's ubiquitous 2014 hit 'Uptown Funk'. The outcome of this surprising collaboration proves to be a heady blend of the band's usual desert-rock sleaze and a crisp, infectious and floor-filling sound. This is an album to move to, and this new direction of dancefloor focus makes the blistering fuzzbox riffs and contortion-inducing solos sound even more cool and confident than ever.

Review: Seven Psalms finds Australia's most imperious musical misfit Nick Cave leaving his Bad Seeds at home and teaming up with frequent collaborator Warren Ellis for a limited 10". The spoken word pieces on this record are the result of a daily song writing practice over a week during lockdown - Cave himself describes them as "small, sacred songs," set to appropriately subtle musical accompaniment. Recorded during the sessions for Cave and Ellis' 2021 album Carnage, it's a rich work in its own right that offers a different perspective on Cave's considerable gifts as a soothsayer.

Review: UMR add to their Tom Waits reissues impetus with a re-release of Bone Machine, Waits' eleventh studio album, first released in 1992. A unique blend of rock, blues and industrial music, it's one of a subset of albums by Waits to deal in themes of death, violence, and religion, and features guest appearances by Keith Richards, Les Claypool, and David Hidalgo. Recorded in a room in the cellar area of Prairie Sun Recording studios, described by Waits as "just a cement floor and a hot water heater", the album is often noted for its rough, stripped-down, percussion-heavy style, as well as its dark lyrical themes revolving around death and chaos.

Review: Oftentimes those albums that people say are the best ever are not even close but one we think actually deserves its place amongst such polls is this one. Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon took prog rock to its logical conclusion and remains an epic listen decades later. Fans will always soak up a newly remastered or extra deluxe version and, of course, any live recordings of their favourite records. And that's what we have here from a legendary show at the building now known as Wembley Arena in 1974, on CD, and magnificent to get lost in.

Review: Few could have predicted the impact Phil Collins would have when he decided to go solo following his first stint in Genesis, but then few were prepared for the iconic gated drums which would come to define the 80s. Opening with the ubiquitous air-drum anthem 'In The Air Tonight', it was an unintentional landmark like all the best ones are, written as a personal therapy after his first divorce and subsequently turned into one of the biggest sellers of 1981. With a huge sound that deserves only the finest treatment, Face Value now gets remastered and repressed as an audiophile double vinyl courtesy of those exacting folk at Analogue Productions.

Enduring hits as 'Fortunate Son', 'Proud Mary' and 'Bad Moon Rising' all feature and the audio has been restored and mixed by Giles Martin and engineer Sam Okell. As well as the album dropping, there is also a documentary concert film Travelin' Band: Creedence Clearwater Revival at the Royal Albert Hall which has been narrated by Jeff Bridges and directed by Bob Smeaton. Review: Eating bats, drinking his own pee (while teaching the Motley Crue what's meant by eccentric British debauchery), and, err, co-starring in a reality TV show. Life has been a colourful one for Ozzy Osbourne, and we've not touched upon Black Sabbath. Impossible not to love, in spite of all the Satan summoning (albeit tongue in cheek), it would have been an awkward moment if this return wasn't exceptionally good. Of course it won't be for everyone. Those who aren't fond of dirty metal guts and dark, macabre riffs might want to look elsewhere for their kicks - it's not just "Goodbye" and "Today Is The End" respectively offering those. It's a record filled with plenty of foreboding menace, and we'd expect nothing less. Even so, there's still time for razor wit to shine ("Eat Me") and borderline madness to prevail (the extra-terrestrial themed "Scary Little Green Men"), making for a journey into the mind of a rock genius.

Her classic 'Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)' was dropped at pivotal moments and reconnected with a whole new generation of fans. It climbed the charts again, broke new records and set a Guinness world Record for being back at the top of the charts so long after its first release all while making our Kate, who wrote, produced and sung the tune, millions in the process. But there were loads of other great tunes in it too, from The Cramps to Dead or Alive, Musical Youth to Talking Heads - and they're all collected here.

Review: Has it really been 40 years since we saw Bono clad in a black sleeveless tee and brown waistcoat, mullet-topped and leading his band of equally early-80s looking musos to the rooftop of a Dublin building to perform one of their finest songs? Well, based on this limited edition release, the answer is clearly 'yes'.

Originally unveiled in 1971, 'Gloria' is a powerhouse single if ever there was one, and a track that marries melody, message, and the atmosphere U2 are best known for. It's a track that soars over those rooftops, The Edge's riffs acting as wings while Bono cries heartfelt rallying calls atop the lot. Unashamed, unabashed, and unapologetic (check the verse in Latin), now you get four different versions, three from the band in their natural habitat (i.e. live on stage), and the original.

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of their third album 'Joyride', Rhino Records have seen to a due repress in a plethora of formats, including single LP, 4xLP, and even a limited orange marble vinyl version. Remembering the proto-balearic ballad-belters' monumental rise to number 1 on the Billboard 100 chart in May 1991, this album initially sold more than 11 million copies, setting a record previously not achieved by any other Scandinavian act. This version, however, also adds a whopping 35 new and unreleased bonus tracks; check out the night-riding, cutthroat bit that is 'Hotblooded', which was initially intended to take the place of 'Joyride' as the album's lead single.

This is hippie Bowie in full lo-fi glory, as you've never seen or heard him before. A mixture of alternative versions and demos, this is selective compared to the X4 CD set but still a new look at one of the most fiercely examined artists about.

Dume is a 16-song album (2 LPs) by Neil Young with Crazy Horse from 1975, recorded during the Zuma recording sessions. It includes tracks and outtakes from Zuma. Thus, think of it like the most complete package or extended version on Zuma. This period (just three years after Harvest) of Neil's music is some of his most productive and beloved writing in his 50+ year career. These extra tracks add not only just more music to enjoy but a unique look into the sessions as they were. The two albums are housed a beautifully packaged gatefold as well.

But when it comes down to it, everyone will agree Aja is their masterpiece, where that exacting studio process and the elevated songwriting hit some magical sweet spot that yielded the semi-mythical perfect album. The grooves are so slinky as 'Black Cow' opens the record up, they spring with joy out of 'Peg' and they lock down heavy on 'Josie', and there's so much more in between. This faithful reproduction from Analogue Productions is a limited audiophile edition for a band who were made for audiophiles.

Yet fear not: on the evidence of Monuments To An Elegy, the combination of riff attack, fragile melody and plaintive melancholy that was at the heart of the Pumpkins' classic work is very much present and correct, not to mention Corgan's charismatic songwriting suss. Monuments To An Elegy is a fitting title, for both the rock solid and emotionally engaging elements of classic Pumpkins are here explored anew.

Unlimited Love is the twelfth full length from the legendary rockers, with the old school line up of Chad on drums, flea on bass, John on guitar (for the first time since 2006) and Anthony leading the vocals still intact, while old producer Rick Rubin is also back on board for the first time since 2011. It finds them wanting to "shine a light in the world, to uplift, connect, and bring people together" and features songs "reflecting our view of the universe."

Review: If Dookie was packed full of raging adolescence, last summer highs and formative experiences, Insomniac, Green Day's follow up record, marked the band moving into a new life stage, sonically and lyrically. Exploring their most punk-punk sound yet, a heavier, growlier, blood, sweat and tears-ier take on the immediately arresting, riff-focused formula that first grabbed our attention.

So it stands to reason a quarter century later things still sound powerful and pleasurable. Of course the singles 'Geek Stink Breath', 'Stuck With Me', 'Brain Stew/Jaded' and 'Walking Construction' will be more than familiar even to those who have only heard the band in passing. But the record is packed full of depth and quality elsewhere it arguably far exceeds its older, more widely remembered sibling.

Review: XTC's cult 1984 album 'The Big Express' was essentially just that - a 'big expression' of brash indie noise, tempered by the shadow of the industrial old Wiltshire town in which the band grew up, Swindon. In true post-punk fashion, the band combined the electronic Linndrum with guitar, bass and vocals. But the 'Express', in their words, wasn't just self-expression; electronic rock, to XTC, also reflected the quite literal concept of the 'railway express', reflecting Swindon's reputation as one of the core towns behind the UK's railway system. A remarkable album, and a slice of history at that.

Review: .There's plenty to talk about with The Who's historic show at Fete De L'Humanite, a huge open-air event hosted by L'Humanite, the main newspaper of the French Communist Party. For starters, on the day - Saturday 9th September, 1972 - an estimated 400,000 people were in attendance, a crowd size that dwarves pretty much anything we can think of today, and remains the band's largest ever gig. Taking to the stage as evening set in, they set to with a typically ferocious set, and four of the most standout pieces for the show are immortalised here on record. Unsurprisingly, that timeless anthem of misspent youth, love, rebellion, and hope for change, 'Baba O'Riley', is a dominant factor, although epic finale 'Relay' is perhaps where the might of their rock 'n' roll juggernaut is most felt here.

Review: Royal Blood's debut was a smash hit, and its globe-conquering success notably hasn't led them to make an avant-jazz record for this follow-up, nor to stray too far from the amp-abusing template it set out. Nor indeed does this record live up to its title, despite spending much of its 35-minute duration chronicling the downfall of a relationship, Nonetheless, the Brightonian duo remain possessed of testosterone-driven power and brass-knuckle boisterousness to slay ten lesser bands, and 'How Did We Get so Dark?' is another masterclass in the creation of riffs big enough to fill a canyon.

Review: Halestorm's last album was 2018's Vicious, and since then the chart topping, hard rocking band has been working keenly on a follow up. It was proceeded by the title single with a morbid looking video fearing band member Lzzy Hale in a bodybag, and then a run of sold out gigs in club and festivals all around the UK. The full album follows up in fine style and will not disappoint fans. It was produced by Nick Raskulinecz of Foo Fighters and Alice in Chains association with co-production by Scott Stevens and showcases great songwriter laden with mental health, redemption and survival themes.

Review: This album was brought together as a look back at some of Paul Weller's lesser-known tunes. The collection dates back to 1991 and takes in many solo recordings across six sides of vinyl. Amongst the inclusions are plenty of rare B-sides and remixes as well as live recordings, none of them appearing on any of his most successful solo albums. It's a mix of rarities that fans are sure to lap up as they travel through 20 years of Weller magic, all compiled by the man himself.

Review: As part of the Who's massive reissue bundle of Who's Next, their most popular album, the half-speed remastered edition on vinyl makes for a relatively reserved version, compared to the mammoth CD box-sets full of demos and rarities also in tow. Primed for audiophiles - whose needs sometimes cross over with, but are no less distinct from, that of collection completists - this version of the album is special in that the original tapes have been re-treated using a half-speed remastering process, which enhances the sound quality and clarity of the original recordings. What's more, this version was done at Abbey Road Studios, of all places, with the process overseen by acclaimed engineer Miles Showell and from tapes prepared by Jon Astley.

Review: Late last year, El Palmas Music dropped Color De Tropico, a terrific collection of vintage Venezuelan music that showcased far-sighted fusions of cumbia, salsa, and numerous American and European styles (jazz, rock, soul and so on). This speedy follow-up covers similar sonic ground and is every bit as essential as its predecessor. Highlights abound from start to finish, but our picks include the rocking, organ-laced psyche-cumbia of Los Kings' 'Empecemos (Let's Start)', the Venezuelan reggae-soul of 'Buena Suerta' by Las Cuatro Monedas, the percussion-and-synths brilliance of Mario Y Sus Diamentes' 'Santo Domingo' and the plucked guitars and infectious rhythms of Anselmo Y Su Conjunto's 'Seis Pajueliao'. The latter is a bona fide tropical treat!

Review: The Black Crowes put out their immediately classic debut album Shake Your Money Maker back in 1981. On the occasion of its 30th anniversary it gets a special deluxe reissue treatment with audio taken from the original sessions. The new collection features no fewer than five unreleased songs including 'Charming Mess' and some special studio recording covers of Humble Pie's '30 Days In The Hole' and John Lennon's 'Jealous Guy.' Two further, never-before-heard demos also make the cut, all with liner notes by David Fricke.

Review: Preceded by a single of the same name last year, The Tipping Point marks the return of one of the most inventive pop groups to ever do it. In the 1980s, Tears For Fears expanded the possibilities of what a commercial song could be with sophisticated songwriting, unabashed bombast, unexpected curveballs and jaw-dropping hooks. Given the influence they've had, they might not sound so revolutionary amongst the generations of pop acts who have followed their lead, but they return vital and full of purpose. Embracing new sonics but staying true to the songwriting as the central focus of the Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal's project, it's a triumphant return from a truly seminal group.
