Review: Mark Knopfler's 2023 album, One Deep River, is a written diary through the heartland of Americana. Demonstrating his mastery of storytelling, Knopfler intricately weaves tales of life's trials and triumphs, evoking a poignant reflection on the human experience. Each track showcases Knopfler's signature guitar work and soulful vocals, transporting listeners to dusty highways and riverbanks at twilight. From the introspective 'Beneath a Prairie Moon' to the bluesy swagger of 'Ride On Across,' Knopfler's ability to paint vivid landscapes through music is unparalleled. 'One Deep River' resonates with timeless allure, embodying Knopfler's status as a guitar troubadour of the modern era.

Review: The Beatles' EP From Us To You #3 captures a 1964 BBC session that encapsulates the band's early charm and infectious energy. Featuring a whopping ten tracks, it was recorded in the BBC's Paris Studios in Regent Street, London and fact fans will note that 'Honey Don't which was later included on the album Beatles For Sale and sung by Ringo, here features John on the vocals. Elsewhere the EP captures the band's irresistible melodies and tight harmonies with three of the tunes originally penned by the band's favourite rockabilly star Carl Perkins. Each song is a testament to The Beatles' enduring influence on popular music and overall serves as a timeless reminder of the band's unmatched creativity which continues to this day with new AI-produced singles that the much talked about one earlier in the year.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Torn sleeve, otherwise in excellent working condition***

This live recording captures Bowie at the end of his Isolar II world tour, wrapping things up at the NHK Hall in Tokyo in mid-December with a set bursting with classics from some of his most iconic records. Backed by the mighty Adrian Bellew on guitar, George Murray on bass and Dennis Davis on drums, the set list for this album is a goldmine for fans of Bowie's Berlin period with Brian Eno. There are plenty of other classics to savour too, making this another essential document for completists of one of the all-time greatest musicians to ever walk this Earth.

On September 21 1979 The Clash took to the stage of The Palladium in New York City and performed one of the most significant gigs of their lives. At that point they'd released their self-titled debut and Give 'Em Enough Rope, and their position as vital progenitors of the British punk explosion was assured on an international level. This particular performance was broadcast on the radio and subsequently became one of the most widely bootlegged of all Clash gigs, but it attained an even more legendary status as the gig where Paul Simonon smashed his bass into the floor, captured on camera and subsequently used as the iconic cover for London Calling.

Review: Bad Boy Troy is the musical moniker of one Troy Tipton, whose ambition to make rollicking guitar music extends back to the age of six, at which point he began to take after famous guitarists such as Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck and Paul Rogers. A lifelong stint of touring with the likes of Black Sabbath, Cheap Trick, Whitesnake and Ozark Mountain Daredevils has led up to this moment, at which the headstock heartthrob now releases this globetrotting new album on CD. Huge guitar sludge-waves are heard in full swing on cover versions like 'Another Brick In The Wall' (Pink Floyd) and 'Bad Ass Boy', as the seasoned axe daredevil swears his dread oath to never sleeping, always shredding.

Review: It's fairly bold to call your album The Legendary Sessions but few could argue that this album certainly does capture some legendary sessions. They are previously unreleased recordings that stem from the iconic Jimi Hendrix and Traffic becoming friends in 1967. They were both innovates, both technical, and both progressive with what they did and that bares out across this fascinating album. It was captured between 1968 and 1970 and is full of freeform jams with atonal structures and shifting tempos as well as great complementary interplay between Jimi and Chris Wood.

Review: Welsh hard rock band Budgie never quite reached the highs of some of their peers by still did plenty for the evolution of their own particular musical niche. The were often said to be a blend of Rush's progressive styles and the more direct and dark heaviness of Black Sabbath. At the heart of the band was Burke Shelley's vocals - famous for their high-pitched banshee style - and despite being commercially unheralded, they have been mentioned as an influence by the likes of Iron Maiden, Van Halen and Queens of the Stone Age. This live show from LA in the late 70s catches them in electrifying form.

Review: The one and only David Bowie was an untouchable talent no matter what he was doing - recording music, inventing personas, acting in films, speaking on futurism, or playing live for radio and TV. Review: The Rolling Stones is the band that never dies, seemingly. All the members are truly ancient by now but - Charlie Watts aside - they keep on keeping on and after 18 years since the last they recently announced their new album. Hackney Diamonds came with its own playful viral marketing campaign and lead single 'Angry' which won plenty of plaudits. The full album is now here on CD with a note from front man Mick Jagger who said "we wouldn't have put this record out if we hadn't really liked it." It's a full on album full of very Rolling Stones sounding cuts that will get you up and playing along to the huge riffs.

Review: There are many fantastic The Doors albums out there, and plenty of them are live recordings of the indie greats doing some of their best work. This is one of them and it pulls together some live highlights from between 1967 and 1970 when Jim Morrison and co were quite possibly at their best. There are tunes here from sets that were originally done for TV shows, comedy hours, live gigs, radio broadcasts and more. It's a raw record that really takes you back in time and allows you to get deep into these classic tunes.

Review: Music history boffins might be interested to know the 19-minute live recording that is From Us To You #4 runs only slightly shorter than the average touring set played by the Fab Four at the time - 1964. A band in ascendency, to say the least, this is the final (and, as the title suggests, fourth) instalment in this EP series, which is made up of BBC session recordings from the later stages of the legendary group's rock-pop, Merseybeat era. A time capsule captured at the UK broadcasting giant's Paris Studios headquarters, classics like 'A Hard Day's Night' and the titular 'From Us To You' sit alongside the Little Richard anthem 'Kansas City/Hey-hey-hey-hey!', and B-sides like 'Things We Said Today'. Packed with infectious energy, and a naive innocence, it's a brief insight into one of the 20th Century's most evocative periods of music history.

Love Me Do (2:26)
Review: Initially put forward as a potential Beatles single during the mid 1990s 'Anthology' period but shelved due to objections from George Harrison, 'Now and Then' has been trailed as the iconic band's 'final single'. It's re-emergence now in finished form (it was completed partially using AI, but also some studio trickery by Giles Martin) ties in with the reissue of the band's two 1973 'best of' compilations (the so-called 'Red' and 'Blue' collections). Like their two singles of the 90s, it features Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and the late George Harrison finishing off an early 70s John Lennon demo, with a little help from producer Jeff Lynne. It comes backed with a freshly remixed, 'proper' stereo version of their debut single, 'Love Me Do', thus completing the band's musical journey once and for all.

Review: As we travel back through Prince's monumental legacy from album to album, the abundant revelations contained within the deluxe editions take us deeper into his genius than any fan dared to dream. Now it's the turn of Diamonds & Pearls, the 1991 opus which brought us such massive hits as the title track, 'Cream' and 'Gett Off'. There's not a single miss on the original album which fills out disc one of this double CD version, while disc two takes us on a wild ride through extended versions, B-sides and remixes aplenty. It's the sound of Prince fully embracing the 90s, from guest raps to house beats and beyond, but as ever it could only come from the mind of one particularly purple man.

Review: With Elton John having played his final gig in the UK - that celebrated appearance at Glastonbury back in June 2023 - there will no doubt be increased interest in the few live albums he has released. This one, which stretches out an entire performance (complete with audience interaction and oddball banter) across two CDs, hails from 1972, when he was just becoming the iconic artist we know and love today. That means a mix of early, glam-rock era favourites as well as a clutch of cuts that still get masses of plays today - think 'Daniel', 'Your Song' and the riotous 'Honky Cat'. There's also a killer cover of 'Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On' that shows Elton at his barnstorming showman best.

A formerly unreleased track by a band of humble origin - they first came together while at Concordia Teachers College in the 1970s - 'Anchors Away' and 'Sheryl Song Is Gonna Do My Dancing' are technically masterful, quirky AOR songs, packed to the brim with extra harmony and melodic ornaments, as well a pair of incredible synth solos, both of which cement a uniquely cosmic edge. Now released for the first time via Tramp, this delight of a band are set to enjoy a mass rediscovery.

Review: Although it's only appearing now, Bob Dylan's 40th album was recorded back in 2021 and formed the soundtrack to Alma Ha'rel's intimate concert film, Shadow Kingdom: The Early Songs of Bob Dylan. The concert depicted in the film, in which Dylan ran through songs from the first part of his career on a sound stage in Los Angeles, was something of a fiction, with the actual recordings featured being captured in a West Hollywood studio. That's what we get here: Dylan delivering decidedly bluesy folk and Americana interpretations of songs from the formative years of his career, ably supported by a cast of musician friends including Don Was (up-tight bass) and country legend T-Bone Burnett (guitar). Dylan's superb songs have never sounded better.

Review: T Rex, and Mark Bolan, will forever be remembered as one of the all-time greatest British rock 'n' roll bands. Perhaps what's so remarkable is just how varied the outfit's output during their decade-long tenure as cult then chart-topping heroes, moving from the psychedelic folk movement into the heady world of glam rock as the 1960s drew to a close. Those who haven't explored their full back catalogue should do so as a matter of urgency. Tanx and Zinc Alloy and the Hidden Riders of Tomorrow are two bonafide gems therein, both albums reflecting the broad influences that helped forge such a unique sound for the group. 'The Groover', and its B-side, 'Midnight', appeared on neither, released only as a standalone 1973 single, but have regularly been attached to special edition versions of those LPs. Now's the chance to own them in their original format.

It features Waters and company delivering gravel-voiced interpretations of The Wall favourites 'Mother' and 'Vera' (the latter segueing into 'Bring The Boys Back Home'), two tracks from Floyd's 1983 set The Final Cut, and Waters solo favourite 'The Bravery of Being Out of Range'. Most significantly, it also includes his re-imagining of 'Comfortably Numb', which Waters has re-framed as a slow, droning, trippy and ultra-atmospheric treat. As you'd expect, there are no Dave Gilmour style guitar solos in sight!

This set, which features the band's later line-up, was recorded on the main stage at the Phoenix Festival (remember that) back in 1996 and first broadcast on UK radio shortly afterwards. This must-have CD presents that performance in its entirety, including the infamous ending - where Strummer's former Clash bandmate Mick Jones emerged from the audience to join him on stage for performances of 'Bank Robber', 'White Riot' and 'London's Burning' (it was the first time the two had performed together since 1983). Recorded for a radio broadcast, the gig was undoubtedly special, with Strummer and his bandmates powering through classics including 'Police & Thieves', '(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais' and 'I Fought The Law'.

Review: Deep Purple are often mentioned in the same breath as the main innovators of heavy Metal, like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, but as this collection of radio transmissions from 1968 shows, they have a much closer relation to the good old fashioned funk than either of those rivals. Ian Paice's drumming on opening track 'Speed King' makes the track much more suitable for dancing to than headbanging, and we challenge you to hear their version of Billie Joe Royal's 'Hush' without thinking of The Charlatans' 'The Only One I Know'. With a generally relaxed feel about this cover version-heavy selection - Hendrix's 'Hey Joe' and The Beatles 'Hush' also get the Purple treatment - this is a different and altogether more accessible slant on the legends that you might not have even guessed existed.

He takes care of drums, but also bass, guitar and lead voice on a pair of nuggets that are heavy and psychedelic Spanish rock tunes full of fresh new wave sounds.

Review: Oftentimes those albums that people say are the best ever are not even close but one we think actually deserves its place amongst such polls is this one. Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon took prog rock to its logical conclusion and remains an epic listen decades later. Fans will always soak up a newly remastered or extra deluxe version and, of course, any live recordings of their favourite records. And that's what we have here from a legendary show at the building now known as Wembley Arena in 1974, on CD, and magnificent to get lost in.

Review: On 29 January 1972, Lou Reed, John Cale and Nico reunited on stage for the first time since the breakup of the Velvet Underground. The concert, which took place at Le Bataclan in Paris, became legendary - in part because bootleg recordings circulated for years before the set was eventually officially released in the 2000s. It remains a fine concert, with much-loved Velvet Underground staples being supplemented by group performances of solo songs from all three artists. There are some real gems stretched across the album, including inspired versions of 'Berlin', 'Heroin' (where Cale's viola catches the ear), 'All Tomorrow's Parties' (very dark, folksy and stripped-back) and 'Femme Fatale'.

Review: Newfoundland-based band The Neverland Express have long been fans of heavy rock icon Meatloaf, frequently delivering lightly extended and reimagined versions of his biggest hits in their live shows. Now they've gone one further and joined forces with singer Caleb Johnson - something of a star Stateside, since he's a previous winner of American Idol - to deliver their own interpretation of Meatloaf's much-loved 1977 album 'Bat Out Of Hell'. Many of their takes were apparently inspired by the way he performs the tracks at concerts. It's a whole heap of fun all told, with Johnson providing fittingly strong, emotive vocals over pleasingly heavy, grandiose takes on such familiar favourites as 'Bat Out of Hell', 'Paradise By The Dashboard Light' and 'For Cyring Out Loud'.

Review: This is the only complete recording of Marc Bolan's summer tour of 1972, when the artist scoured most of the UK following the smash success of his first albums, not to mention his first movie ('Born To Boogie') and record label. A popular zeitgeist of "T. Rexstasy" followed, with Bolan's appearances at venues such as Wembley Empire Pool (now Arena) and the Capitol Theatre cementing his gargantuan live sound, all driven home by his joyous grin and all-encompassing mop of hair. This appearance by Bolan in Newcastle's City Hall in May of that year is raw and unfiltered and as ever textured by the sound of screaming fans below.

Review: Whatever the BBE label puts out it is always quality and enjoyable even if it isn't in your usual stylistic wheelhouse. A case in option is this reissue of a delightful little 10981 soft rock 7" by Will & James Ragar. It has a bit of a collector's piece so an original will cost a few quid ad it is basically the only thing the brotherly pair ever put out. 'Forever' is a jaunty bit of folk with a lovely rolling bassline under the lush vocal harmonies. 'Bayou Paradise' has more soul to it, with a Cajun overtone and slow, pirouetting rhythms that are heartwarming to say the least.

Review: There are archival releases worth buying, then there's Hendrix with Dusty. For those who don't know, music legend Dusty Springfield used to have her own show on an ITV then still in relative infancy (and, it's safe to say, far more relevant in terms of youth culture than it sadly is today). The programme, It Must Be Dusty, saw the acclaimed singer, songwriter and blue-eyed soul-pop titan welcome other talented folk onto the stage to perform live.

On 5th June 1968, that opportunity fell on arguably the world's greatest guitarist dead or alive, Jimi Hendrix. The result - as this recording reveals - was an electrifying show that very nearly brought the studio crashing down around the riff-wielding guitar hero. Lost to the sands of time until very recently, and available here in full for the very first time, the pair's duet, 'Mockingbird', warrants purchasing the entire album alone, although the rest is similarly spellbinding.

He has dropped several of them already this year and now comes back once again with this Rock Vs Rap offering which as you would guess pairs off tropes and sounds from both those genres to create something new and raw. 'K' has gnarly guitar riffs over dusty drums and some rock vocals. On the flipside, 'KK' opens up with more iconic rock riffs but filtered and chopped up then redeployed under some iconic hip-hop verses. Fine mash-ups for sure.

A kaleidoscopic LP from the master of reinvention, posthumously reinventing himself once more.

Review: In May 1965, a young Lou Reed, accompanied by future band-mate John Cale, recorded a demo tape of songs, stuck it in an envelope and mailed it to himself in order to retain proof of ownership of the copyright. He kept hold of the unopened envelope for nearly 50 years, and now Light in the Attic have reached agreement with Reed to release it. As you'd expect given the tape's vintage, it's more bluesy, folksy and shot through with Americana than Reed's later garage-rock and proto-punk releases; a set of superb, far-sighted and genuinely ground-breaking songs with Reed and Cale singing straight to tape with the backing of little more than an electric and acoustic guitar.

Most of the tunes the pair sang are lesser-known titles from Costello's mid-to late-'80s catalogue, though Frisell co-wrote the title track. Also included here are selections by the great Charles Mingus in the form of 'Weird Nightmare' and Lerner & Loewe's 'Gigi'. This one comes on nice heavyweight and translucent blue vinyl. Review: The 60s Liverpudlian rock quartet are famed for their song '6 Day War', which has been sampled from the likes of DJ Shadow in Tokyo Drift and Pusha T on his album released earlier this year. This track is undoubtedly a classic, written in the aftermath of the ongoing Arab-Israeli war of 1967, '6 Day War' is one of the best anti-war tracks of all time. The slow jam-rock ballad comes from the band's album 'Oh What a Lovely War!' released in 1973 which has not been released in Britain until now, making this a landmark pressing. The record is a psychedelic soft-progressive rock LP with emphasis on heavy guitars like in 'Lay it Down' and even pulls from folk rock in 'Dirty Delilha Blues'. Colonel Bagshot were almost criminally overlooked, though their music seems to consistently stand the test of time and it's easy to hear why. The sound is quintessential Liverpool rock, even down to the naming conventions being evocative of The Beatles.

Review: Elvis Costello ruffled a few feathers when he recorded The Juliet Letters with The Brodsky Quartet in 1992. The concept is a bold one for someone best loved as a traditional singer songwriter with a punky edge. It's that frictional dimension to Costello's craft which helps an idea like this land - a series of imagined letters to Shakespeare's Juliet set to varied set of classical backdrops. The music ranges from jagged and dissonant to lilting laments, and Costello's vocal delivery adapts in kind. It was possibly misunderstood on its release, but as with so much great art, in the fullness of time its vision and skill become apparent, making this reissue a welcome one.

Review: The Psychedelic Breaks & Beats label isn't hard to get the measure of - they make their MO pretty clear in their name after all. It's a fairly safe bet you won't have heard the kind of obscure wonderments they dust down from the history of funky nuggets on the far out fringes, and so it goes on this opening gambit - a split 7" from Capprells & Soul Brothers Band and The Inner Thumb. The Capprells were a Pittsburgh-based family group who released a string of singles in the 70s, all of which are hard to come by but with 'Close Your Eyes' quite possibly being the pick of the bunch, still carrying a little of that 60s magic and more than deserving of a fresh airing on this release. On the flip we get 'Soul Submarine' by The Inner Thumb, an appropriately deep-diving joint originally released on the Soul Ecstasy soundtrack in 1999.

Review: This was Elvis Costello's 13th studio album, unveiled in 1991, and at the time was supposed to be released under his birth name, Declan MacManus, having grown tired of the legendary stage moniker he created for himself in the early-1970s. Evidently that didn't happen, and we got further Costello records in the subsequent years, too, but it's an interesting anecdote.

As is the fact the man himself has described this outing as an "angry" piece of work. It was, of course, recorded in the aftermath of the Gulf War, and the track list shows. While we still have moments of classy balladry and whimsy pub rock, at times songs here feel like they're bearing teeth and ready to bite. Eruptions of noise that betray the feelings of the time.

Review: Ace Records continue their series of compilations from Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs, tapping into unique niches of British music culture under titles like English Weather and The Tears Of Technology to arrive at this latest joint, Fell From The Sun. This is a specific trip into the downtempo, after hours sounds prevalent in 1990-1991, as the acid house wave broke and Balearic selector ethics seeped into studio practice. The selections are absolutely on point, from The Orb's majestic remix of Primal Scream's 'Higher Than The Sun' to Saint Etienne's own moody roller, 'Speedwell'. It's bouncy and boundlessly optimistic as well as being supremely chill, absolutely of its time but still ringing with an eternal charm that feels ready for a revival. Let this compilation be your guide.

'Supernova' sees the pair following up 2020's acclaimed debut, 'Who Are The Girls?', with a doubling down on groove, experimentation and attitude. From the glitchy heft of 'Antagonist' to the aggro bravado of 'Cleopatra', this sophomore effort promises even more dynamism from Amy Love and Georgia South's unique formula. Even the industrial tinged strangeness of 'K.M.B' shines with a nuanced nu-metal homage.

It made perfect sonic sense - after all, the band's trademark sound leans heavily on classic rock, rhythm & blues and glam-rock from the period. This EP showcases the recordings of that session, with the plentiful highlights including a gritty, life-affirming rhythm and blues rendition of the Temptations' 'Papa Was a Rolling Stone', a stripped-back take on the Rolling Stones 'Rocks Off' and a pleasingly fuzzy, heavyweight translation of Bowie's 'Moonage Daydream'.

This double-disc set, which features previously broadcast recordings of the late, great musical genius's performance with his New Power Generation band at the 1991 Rock in Rio festival, offers a timely reminder of this fact. Alongside righteous, sometimes riotous performances of familiar hits - 'Let's Go Crazy', 'Nothing Compares 2 U', 'Purple Rain' and 'Kiss' - we get jammed-out versions of album cuts and B-sides, Aretha Franklin covers featuring guest vocals from Rosie Gaines, and a handful of extended medlies feauring everything from famous movie themes, and funk/soul classics, to lesser-known jams from the Prince catalogue. Our Tin Can Rocket (3:34)
Review: The In Sound Company are in top form on this free new serve ing of 7" funk. It is heavily psyched out stuff for the heads with Yael Lavie the featured guests to kick us off on the time track. The drums splash and crash, the rugged guitar snakes below and the whole thing has a raw but real sense of seduction with plenty of subtle Turkish rock overtones, to our ears. Project Gemini's Paul Osborne plays bass on 'Our Tin Can Rocket'. It is a more driven flip side with whirring guitar pedals and hard biting drums for maximum club clout.

Review: Some concerts become legendary for a number of reasons: the Rolling Stones' performance at San Diego Sports Arena in 1969 is one of those. It almost never happened thanks to Mick Jagger suffering with throat problems, and fans rioting outside the stadium led to the concert starting two hours late. Yet as this local radio recording of some of the performance shows, the Stones' set was little less than a triumph. Heavy, bluesy, raucous and full of semi-improvised alterations to familiar favourites, it includes brilliant versions of some of the Stones' most powerful and popular tracks. Our picks include the versions of 'Symapthy With The Devil', 'Prodigal Son' (a brilliantly stripped-back, blues-style take), 'Gimme Shelter' (surging and soaring) and a scene-stealing, concert concluding romp through 'Street Fighting Man'.
