Not only do you get increased sound quality, but you also get the amazing artwork from Stanley Donwood. This album includes "Nude", a live favourite for many years that was originally written during the "OK Computer" sessions. More minimal that their "Kid A" period, "In Rainbows" does something that very few albums have done - its sound is distinct from previous Radiohead albums, but is still clearly Radiohead. Hail to the kings, they are back on top form.

Review: Gaucho was the seventh studio album from soft-pop-rock-jazzists and yacht rock pioneers Steely Dan. Released in 1980, they would embark on a tour to mark the record's arrival, and then vanish for 20 years. Or at least go on extended hiatus. That's not surprising, given the back story here, with widespread creative disagreements and a three-way legal battle with MCA and Warner Bros ensuing. And an original budget blown by the sheer scope of 42 musicians contributing to the work. The Lost Gaucho is almost an unplugged version of all that. These are the alternative versions recorded in the early sessions that led to the final LP. Broadcast on radio as part of the promotional campaign, they've been compiled on this joyfully smooth and seductive package, which fans need in their lives.

In fact, there is a loose concept here that revolves around a distant solar system. This one's been given an anniversary reissue a whopping three times in a row; of course, we should endeavour not to overlook the more perfunctory, audiophiles' rarities such as this. Review: Take a trip back in time with this exquisite live recording of The Doors back in their pomp and heyday. It was on June 5th 1970 that the legendary group fronted by Jim Morrison headed to the Seattle Center Coliseum following widespread plaudits for their recently released Morrison Hotel album in February of the same year. They were warped up in several legal issues but played out of their skin on this night for a broadcast on KUOW-FM radio. It was the fifth and last time they played in Seattle and finds them playing with power and vitality despite a hostile crowd and some sound issues.

Review: The Black Crowes have never been ones to hide their inspirations. The classically-styled US blues rockers have turned their hands to plenty of covers over the years, and this time they're offering up a short album's worth of renditions under the banner of 1972. The year doesn't so much nod to the songs specifically as the feeling, and a particular era of sound they were aiming for. Given their skin in the game, it's no surprise to hear them nail the likes of 'Rocks Off' and 'Papa Was A Rolling Stone', paying homage and doing their own thing in equal measure.

It came off the back of their hugely success 1985 long player Brotehrs in Arms and featured plenty of tracks from that record as well as the four others before that. Review: Not to be confused with the 12th studio album by Mary J. Blige, or any of the other records with 'London Sessions' in the title (and there will be many, many), it's now 50 years since Iggy Pop and his Stooges sat down to record the now-legendary LP, Raw Power, with sessions taking place (you guessed it), in London. Logically, this extended player collates some of the best versions that didn't make the final cut into one place, and as such is definitely a must for diehard fans and collectors.
Not that others should be put off in anyway. We'd still recommend getting a copy of the original as it was intended to be released. The players designed it that way. But this is also a well-worth owning piece of punk rock history, with unrelenting, unpolished, uncompromising and unapologetic noise sounding as infectious today as it did back then.

Review: Former Hanoi Rocks frontman Michael Monroe formed Demolition 23 in New York in 1993, and their sole album should be considered essential listening for any lover of that ramped up glam-punk sound. 'Nothin's Alright' was an absolute earworm of a lead single from the album, but throughout there's stomping, singalong anthems to get your strut on to. Shockingly, this is the first time the album has ever received an official vinyl pressing, so don't expect this one to hang around once the Hanoi faithful catch wind of it.

Review: The legend Leonard Cohen was already sure to live on but this new collection of renditions of the legendary singer-songwriter's many and most profound songs makes it a dead cert. Produced by Larry Klein it is a remarkable record that features a truly broad array of artists, all legends in their own right, from jazz crooner Gregory Porter to post-punk poster child Iggy Pop via pop star David Gray and the always soothing sounds of Norah Jones. Sarah McLachlan's version of the iconic 'Hallelujah' is a real standout while Luciana Souza's 'Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye' is also a fine reworking.

Review: Two years on from Tom Waits' landmark Swordfishtrombones and the jazz cat-turned staunch experimentalist continued to explore the roads less travelled with Rain Dogs. Originally released via the seminal Island Records in 1985, if the preceding album felt expansive, the follow up broadens horizons even further, inviting luminaries Keith Richards and Marc Ribot to get in on the action, although neither come close to even sharing the spotlight with the real star of the show. Spanning New Orleans funeral march melancholy, old down and dirty blues rock, heart wrenching balladry, wild cinematic instrumentals, noir-ish pulp fiction storytelling, and more than a little of the Swordfish-style stomping oddness, it's a masterpiece. Perhaps what really sets this apart, though, is how these myriad styles, at least some of which could easily fall into caricature, feel and sound so authentic, making it impossible not to buy into.

Career highlight songs like 'Out Of The Blue', 'Prairie Rose' and 'All I Want Is You' sound better than ever here, doing justice to its comparatively pessimistic sound. It's still got that Bryan Ferry-ish, romantic aristocratic vibe, though!

Review: Given their predilection for getting out of their minds throughout much of their early years, it is a wonder that Red Hot Chili Peppers are still here at all, let alone able to cook up a new studio album. Unlimited Love is the twelfth full length from the legendary rockers, with the old school line up of Chad on drums, flea on bass, John on guitar (for the first time since 2006) and Anthony leading the vocals still intact, while old producer Rick Rubin is also back on board for the first time since 2011. Review: There's a clear statement of intent when a band puts out a retrospective compilation subtitled Volume 1. Pearl Jam are unarguably an outfit that can back up that hinted threat with genuine goods, too, ranking among the most influential US alternative rock bands of the 1990s. As such we're already chomping at the bit with anticipation for the sequel.

Review: The title of Nick Lowe's solo record has a great backstory: at the time, he and label head Jake Riviera wanted to mess with journalists so in every interview at the time they gave the record a different title. Jesus of Cool was one which they knew wouldn't work for the US release so that became Pure Pop for Now People, while Wireless World was another one banded about. That faded away and was forgotten about as the other two titles went on to be used. But now, 40 years later, the record is reissued under that third title but with the original album tracklist.

Review: Royal Blood have had two UK number one albums, have sold over two million copies ad picks du pa global and critical fan base. They managed to blow all expectations out of the water last year with their 'Trouble's Coming' release and now the new album does it again. It has big riffs from Mike Kerr, vocals that range from raw and rock ready to more tender and soulful and grooves that can be hyper aggressive or more comforting. It's a real roller coaster ride that finishes with a rather surprising piano ballad. But then again, what would a Royal Blood record be without a surprise.

Review: American musician Machine Gun Kelly made quite the about turn on his fifth studio album, released in September of 2020. In a grand depart from his usual style, he ditched his rap sound in favour of a guitar-driven pop punk style that is primed for emo teenagers. Famous for his motor mouth flow, Kelly switches it up for big anthemic verses. Most of the songs clock in under three minutes, come with simple but effective three-chord melodies, huge hooks and tender breakdowns that sound like late but natural air to Blink-182.

Review: If you don't know the context in which this live album was recorded then let's just say there are some pretty important details. Nevertheless, that knowledge isn't essential to appreciating what's here - which, as Tom Petty himself puts it at one point, is a "damn good time". Rock 'n' roll music in arguably its most unapologetic form, it's rollocking rhythms, drums, and guitar hooks, snake charmer solos and tight to the point you almost wonder if it really was bottled in the moment.

Review: New York City's Been Stellar debuts on the So Young label with an album that is bright but distorted and crackly. It has great stories of violence as well as love, and paints a picture of the new and un-glamorous New York City itself. His big walls of guitar tones and vocal earnesty all convey the history of his local streets in indie-rock tunes that go big. There is an underlying pulse to 'My Honesty' that locks you in while tightly coiled guitars move from loud-quiet dynamics to build tension. It is a highlight amongst many here.

There's plenty of classic period pieces gathered here on this album, featuring songs by David Bowie, Nina Simone, and Wings, Donovan, Sonny & Cher, Gordon Lightfoot, and more. As well as that, there's also a new original song written by Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood, who has worked with Anderson before. Look out for Chuck Berry performing with Steve Miller Band for an added surprise in the midst of the hits, and a deep cut from Joe Walsh's pre-Eagles band James Gang.

Review: British trumpeter and bandleader Ian Carr put out his most revered album in 1972. Its iconic fusion of jazz and rock has become a sought after rarity. Featured musicians include members of bands like Nucleus, Brian Auger's band, Soft Machine and Stan Tracy Group, and they all help lend the record a psychedelic, proggy aesthetic, with swirling melodies making for moody but funky tunes. Tracks like 'Mayday' put expressive solos and complex arrangements front and centre, while 'Suspension' is a more laidback joint for sinking into. The gorgeous meandering lilt of 'Summer Rain' is our personal favourite.

However, the success was short-lived. Combining the alternative and grunge rock they were known for with elements of garage, experimental balladry and worldbeat, it's easily their most diverse, but that didn't suit everyone back then. Hit play today, though, and we're not sure anyone could argue against the depth and innovation at play.
