Review: The Beatles' EP From Us To You #3 captures a 1964 BBC session that encapsulates the band's early charm and infectious energy. Featuring a whopping ten tracks, it was recorded in the BBC's Paris Studios in Regent Street, London and fact fans will note that 'Honey Don't which was later included on the album Beatles For Sale and sung by Ringo, here features John on the vocals. Elsewhere the EP captures the band's irresistible melodies and tight harmonies with three of the tunes originally penned by the band's favourite rockabilly star Carl Perkins. Each song is a testament to The Beatles' enduring influence on popular music and overall serves as a timeless reminder of the band's unmatched creativity which continues to this day with new AI-produced singles that the much talked about one earlier in the year.

Review: As we write this The Beatles have just managed to put out their last ever, they say, new single. By harnessing the vast powers of AI and feeding it a dusty old clip of him singing back in the day, they have even managed to recreate the voice of John Lennon. It's a reminder of how ahead of their time the Liverpool band always was, even back in the 1960s. And that's when this album London to Manchester was recorded live on October 13, 1963, which marked the point at which the press knew the band was going to be global superstars and features all their biggest hits from this early-on time.

Relay (8:36)
Review: .There's plenty to talk about with The Who's historic show at Fete De L'Humanite, a huge open-air event hosted by L'Humanite, the main newspaper of the French Communist Party. For starters, on the day - Saturday 9th September, 1972 - an estimated 400,000 people were in attendance, a crowd size that dwarves pretty much anything we can think of today, and remains the band's largest ever gig. Taking to the stage as evening set in, they set to with a typically ferocious set, and four of the most standout pieces for the show are immortalised here on record. Unsurprisingly, that timeless anthem of misspent youth, love, rebellion, and hope for change, 'Baba O'Riley', is a dominant factor, although epic finale 'Relay' is perhaps where the might of their rock 'n' roll juggernaut is most felt here.

Review: Mott The Hoople's original line up were on hand when the band went in to the BBC to record this live show for radio. It was back in 1970 and the set list they went for mixes up their Dylan-influenced ballads with plenty of more does eyed stoner rock sounds. Fans will recognise most of these tunes from various Mott the Hoople long players, although three of them were never actually on any record other than this one. The pressing is of great quality given the age of the recording and is a must for fans with extensive sleeve notes.

Review: If any other band decided to open what's essentially Greatest Hits Vol.2 with a track like 'Paint It Black' you'd probably worry the album was destined for a sharp decline, and wonder how such a powerhouse piece of music didn't wind up on Greatest Hits Vol I. Not so with The Rolling Stones, a band that had already put out more than enough incredible tunes to fill five volumes by the time this collection came along (1969). Representing the first seven years of the seminal English rock group, after the first juggernaut spirals off into semi-psychedelic mania we're treated to several more reminders of exactly why these guys were so good during their early days. 'Ruby Tuesdays', 'Dandelion' and 'Let's Spend the Night Together' reveal stunning pop sensibilities, while fare such as 'Honkey Tonk Woman', 'Jumpin' Jack Flash', and 'Street Fighting Man' celebrating the predominantly Black-made blues they looked to for so much inspiration.

Review: Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs of Saint Etienne fame are the diggers behind this new rock assemblage which pays tribute to mid-afternoon set times at lesser-known festivals from years gone (well, the 70s) such as Deeply Vale, Bickershaw, Krumlin, Weeley, and Plumpton. They were just as important to those who attended as the more celebrated likes of Glasto' and this collection shows the sounds were just as good, too. The sounds - from big names liek Deep Purple, Hawkwind and Alan Parker & Alan Hawkshaw to lesser known acts like Jonesy, will appeal to hippies and bikers alike with big riffs, funky drumming and some psyched-out sounds.

Review: Tom Waits's Closing Time turns a hard-to-believe 50 years old in 2023 and as such gets the usual special reissue treatment. This indie-only clear vinyl version comes half-speed mastered for extra loudness and clarity so is the best possible way to listen to the landmark album. It is one that for the first time shows a real blend of the jazz, blues, and folk styles that Waits would eventually become so well known for. It also includes his famous cover of 'Ol' 55', singles like the heartbreaking 'Martha' and delightful acoustic folk of 'I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You.' This is the first time this album has been reissued as a double, so do not sleep.

Review: Dave Clark Five, Manfred Mann, Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Searchers. To say the New Musical Express pulled together an impressive line up for the magazine's celebratory concert, at which the winners of a reader's poll were revealed, would be an understatement. And this is before we even mention the fact The Rolling Stones were also involved, only beaten to the top of the bill by The Beatles. On the day, Liverpool's Fab Four were presented their award by none other than Roger Moore, and then proceeded to play their first live show in 15 weeks. 'She Loves You', 'You Can't Do That', 'Long Tall Sally', and 'Can't Buy Me Love' were among the highlights, with an audience of 10,000 packing out the Empire Pool in Wembley for the entire day. This recording captures the energy of that set and the spirit of the time.

Review: Grammy-nominated rockers Rival Sons punch hard on their latest album - perhaps harder than they have before. But then that's exactly the outfit's modus, with guitarist Scott Holiday making it clear that the band are resolutely determined to progress, develop, step up, and push forward with every effort they bestow on us. To say that's audible when casting an ear over their back catalogue would be an understatement, not that preceding efforts like Hollow Bones, Great Western Valkyrie and Feral Roots weren't all commendable. Nevertheless, there's definitely growth evident when taking a listen now compared with back then. Running from full throttle, sweat inducing, guitar-fuelled adrenalin in song form, through to sweeping and grandiose tracks and onto more reflective acoustic moments, in world that often feels slightly lacking in terms of real modern rock greats, this is one example of where you can still find plenty of life.

Review: It's 1987 and you've just hit play on Electric. The third album from English rock greats The Cult. It followed their breakthrough record, Love, in order but not style, marking a sharp artistic shift from the gothic tones they first garnered attention with, and then blew up through, and onto more of a straight up bar room hard rock that positioned them closer to the likes of AC/DC than The Cure. That's no criticism of course - both those points of reference are amazing in their individual ways. And Electric certainly landed on the right side of its sound, peaking at 27 in the UK album charts and getting critics commenting on the swagger and irreverence at the heart of the tracks. Guitars played as they should be, for want of a better turn of phrase.

Review: English hard rock band Thunder dropped their third studio album Behind Closed Doors originally back in 1994. It climbed the charts and ended up at number five, reinforcing the band's status as one of Britain's best of that era. It spawned three Top 40 singles in the shape of 'Castles in the Sand,' 'Stand Up' and 'River of Pain' and featured writing contributions from none other than Duran Duran guitarist Andy Taylor, who had previosuly produced the group. It's a seamless mix of classic and hard rock that gets reissued now in expanded form with extra tracks including 'In a Broken Dream' (Live at Club Citta Japan, 2000) and 'Til The River Runs Dry' (Live at Nottingham Rock City, 2005).

Review: Ahead of their time? Ruined by excess and ego? A difficult act to market? New York Dolls are one of those stories about the fickle nature of industry and listeners, and the risks of hedonism. Emerging from The Big Apple in 1971, the group had a thoroughly modern sound for the time, combining hard and what was then a very fresh glam rock sound with early punk prototypes, years before people would learn what that means. New York Dolls was the spectacular self-titled debut from the band, put out by Mercury in 1973. Although a commercial failure, it's often cited among the greatest rock 'n' roll records of all time, but despite critical success it did little outside the US, where sales weren't great as it was, and the outfit would only last another few years - with various lineup changes - before calling time. This rare release charts what came before all that, including collector's item demos from their time playing as Actress.

It was a show that was broadcast by Queen when they were performing in concert in May of 1985 at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium, Japan. It does across six sides of marbled vinyl and takes in every one of the band's hits you would hope, from the ice-cold 'Under Pressure' to the menacing 'Another One Bites the Dust.' Then there is the theatrical masterpiece that is 'Bohemian Rhapsody', the playfulness of 'Radio Ga Ga' and the ode to empowerment that is 'I Want To Break Free.'

Review: "It's grown on me as well. I think this song has something to do with the classical world, something that's out of reach. Someplace you'd like to be beyond your experience. Something that is so supreme and first rate that you could never come back down from the mountain. That you've achieved the unthinkable." So said Bob Dylan himself in a 2020 New York Times interview when asked why 'When I Paint My Masterpiece', his 1971 sleeper hit, had made its way to the forefront of live shows in more contemporary times. Opening with that track, this album reflects the score of the 2021 concert movie, Shadow Kingdom, which in itself reaffirms the artist as one of the 20th, and 21st Century's greatest songwriters. There's really nothing more to say.

Utilising melodious leads, powerful vocals and technically impressive flashes of prog brilliance, their fourth full-length Showdown offers up a form of triumphant positivity and anthemic fantasy, harking back to the classic era of illustrious prog and classic rock with subtle nods to the likes of Rainbow, Deep Purple, and Kansas. It might not be 1978 anymore, just don't tell the band that.

Review: Deep Purple are often mentioned in the same breath as the main innovators of heavy Metal, like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, but as this collection of radio transmissions from 1968 shows, they have a much closer relation to the good old fashioned funk than either of those rivals. Ian Paice's drumming on opening track 'Speed King' makes the track much more suitable for dancing to than headbanging, and we challenge you to hear their version of Billie Joe Royal's 'Hush' without thinking of The Charlatans' 'The Only One I Know'. With a generally relaxed feel about this cover version-heavy selection - Hendrix's 'Hey Joe' and The Beatles 'Hush' also get the Purple treatment - this is a different and altogether more accessible slant on the legends that you might not have even guessed existed.

Review: Welsh hard rock band Budgie never quite reached the highs of some of their peers by still did plenty for the evolution of their own particular musical niche. The were often said to be a blend of Rush's progressive styles and the more direct and dark heaviness of Black Sabbath. At the heart of the band was Burke Shelley's vocals - famous for their high-pitched banshee style - and despite being commercially unheralded, they have been mentioned as an influence by the likes of Iron Maiden, Van Halen and Queens of the Stone Age. This live show from LA in the late 70s catches them in electrifying form.

It got a first official release in 2004 having been bootlegged for many years before that from a recording taken from the sound board at the gig. Due to a problem with tape transfers, the speed on some releases is slower than the original concert.

Review: Punctuation aside, The Rolling Stones set a precedent with Get Yer Ya Ya's Out. At the time, concert albums were still something of a novel ideal, but when the iconic British rock 'n' rollers unleashed this it proved to the industry just how much people wanted on-stage magic captured for posterity. The first live record to hit number one in the UK charts, it was recorded at shows in New York City and Baltimore in 1969, just ahead of the landmark Let It Bleed LP arriving. It also proves the power of a bootleg, with an unofficial record, Live'r Then You'll Ever Be, reportedly persuading the band's then-label, Decca, to cash in on the clear demand for the group's exceptional live show, on vinyl. Captured on their first tour with Mick Taylor, Brian Jones having left, it presents the outfit as they sounded at the very top of their game - energetic, rule breaking, and packed with the soul of blues six stringers.

Review: Their latest release in the Marc Bolan Songwriter series, following on from the success of Songwriter: 1970 and Songwriter: 1971, Demon Records are introducing Songwriter: 1973 to their catalogue. An intimate, vinyl-only look into the influential artist's prolific output, Songwriter: 1971 delves into a period of change during which Bolan was more active than ever, recording music incessantly in recording studios in both the US and Europe - an era in which the distinctive T Rex sound was becoming increasingly limiting for the artist. Over the course of this in depth sixteen-track compilation, featuring a fascinating selection of finished recordings and working versions, this next chapter charts Bolan's attempts to develop and ultimately move away from the sound he had invented for himself.

Still, that didn't stop Sean Rowley from serving up a bumper collection of what he thinks to be sounds you might enjoy but not what to shout about from the rock canon. He first did so two decades ago and so here comes this 20th anniversary edition on double vinyl with umpteen catchy, feel good and singalong classics from the likes of Captain & Tennille, Electric Light Orchestra, Andy Fairweather-Low and many more.

Now the time has come for him to release his debut album Echoes - Ancient & Modern on Deutsche Grammophon. It takes the form of fresh orchestral takes on 11 iconic tracks and features a star-studded selection of guest features from legends of the music world like Tori Amos, Rick Astley, Toyah Willcox & Robert Fripp, Iggy Pop & Phoebe Lunny and more. Review: T Rex, and Mark Bolan, will forever be remembered as one of the all-time greatest British rock 'n' roll bands. Perhaps what's so remarkable is just how varied the outfit's output during their decade-long tenure as cult then chart-topping heroes, moving from the psychedelic folk movement into the heady world of glam rock as the 1960s drew to a close. Those who haven't explored their full back catalogue should do so as a matter of urgency. Tanx and Zinc Alloy and the Hidden Riders of Tomorrow are two bonafide gems therein, both albums reflecting the broad influences that helped forge such a unique sound for the group. 'The Groover', and its B-side, 'Midnight', appeared on neither, released only as a standalone 1973 single, but have regularly been attached to special edition versions of those LPs. Now's the chance to own them in their original format.

Review: Greta Van Fleet were either born too late or at exactly the right time. It all depends on how you feel about Led Zeppelin-esque hard progressive rock music, which is a relatively fitting description for the band although not necessarily bang on. Straight out of Frankenmuth, Michigan, the four piece formed of brothers Jake and Josh (twins no less) and Sam Kiszka, and Danny Wagner, know how to wail, riff, and drive tracks forward, and seem disinterested in falling for, or fawning over, the latest best things since sliced bread. Instead, they create these huge rock 'n' roll symphonies that seem made for stadium-sized crowds. Take 'Meeting the Master', for example - any bigger and it would take over the world itself. Even in less grandiose moments, 'Farewell For Now', it's hard to deny the rousing qualities at play. Overall, then, Greta Van Fleet may be exactly what we all needed, without realising it.

At the time they had just dropped their self-titled album and it went on to reach the Top 10 on the Billboard chart while the band toured the country four times in that same year. Their second album Led Zeppelin II dropped in October, making it something of a huge year for the group. The tunes here were recorded at the famous Fillmore West in San Francisco with the classic 'Dazed & Confused' appearing next to others like 'How Many More Times.'

Review: Kate Bush has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity ever since one of her most iconic tracks was included in some of the most notable scenes in Stranger Things. It is maybe for that reason - that and the return of Bush to the live arena after a decades-long absence - that her canon is now being revisited and reissued with Fish People offering up this remastered version of her classic Never For Ever full length on lovely heavyweight silver and black vinyl. It comes with brilliantly ghoulish artwork and kicks off with the classic 'Babushka' before taking in the likes of 'All We Ever Look For' and 'Night Scented Stock.' Released when she was just 19, the record which has now been remastered for this new reissue, showcases Bush's remarkable songwriting prowess and distinctive vocal style. From the haunting balladry of the classic 'Wuthering Heights' to the enchanting melodies of 'The Man with the Child in His Eyes,' each track is a testament to her boundless creativity. The lush arrangements and poetic lyrics continue throughout all the cuts to ensure this remains a timeless classic that continues to captivate listeners with its emotive storytelling and unparalleled musicality. Review: Did Steely Dan go Bisto on us and save the best for last? Maybe, just maybe. While Pretzel Logic didn't mark the end of all things The Dan, it was the final album to feature the full lineup - Walter Becker, Donald Fagen, Denny Dias, Jim Hodder, and Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter (prior to the latter joining The Doobie Brothers). It was also the last to be released while the group were actively touring, and as such can be seen as something of a swan song. Perhaps Magnus Opus is a more appropriate turn of phrase. Critically acclaimed at the time, the record sees the jazz rockers opt to tone down the instrumentals that had cost them radio play with preceding LP, Countdown to Ecstasy, and instead focus on shorter, more direct and certainly catchier tunes. That's not to mean throwaway, mind, with praise lauded on the release at the time, when it was reissued in the late 1980s and remastered a decade or so later. Back again, it still has the same impact.

Should they not succeed it will prove a fateful mission and the dream of all this is captured in this original soundtrack. Beastie Boys bring the heat with their classic 'No Sleep Till Brooklyn' and Florence & The Machine has still rarely bettered 'Dog Days Are Over.'

Review: The eleventh studio album by prolific American rock band Pearl Jam, Gigaton was originally released in March 2020 and sold out almost instantly. Now getting a re-run on US label Monkeywrench, fans have a second chance at adding this standout release to their collection. Typical of Pearl Jam this release features inventive instrumentation such as the 1850s-era pump organ originally played by Vedder on the 2015 demo of 'River Cross'. Featuring popular singles 'Dance of the Clairvoyants', 'Superblood Wolfmoon' and 'Quick Escape', Gigaton was undoubtedly well worth the six and half year wait. Definitely one you'll need to grab before it's gone.

Review: Los Angeles glam metal superstars, Warrant, had their biggest success with this Cherry Pie album. It's the band's second full-length and it contains two of their biggest top 40 charting singles. Both the title track and the cheeky anthem, 'I Saw Red', catapulted their name into the 80s-turned-90s rock stratosphere, while the somewhat infantile humour, braggadocios attitude, and hidden intrigue of deeper cuts such as, 'Uncle Tom's Cabin', would signal the more abstract lyricism and clever song-writing tropes that would be more fleshed out and fully realised by the time 1992's seminal, 'Dog Eat Dog', arrived. This reissue comes on nice heavyweight vinyl.

Review: Huge guitar solos, a not-so-subtle hint of seduction and romance, rousing choruses and an attitude that screams: "I'm gonna make that heavy metal hand signal every five or six minutes." Warrant may not be the first name on everyone's lips when it comes to the heyday big room, sexually charged glam metal, but when all is said and done they did pretty well during their seven years in the game.
Emerging from the Los Angeles scene of the mid-late-1980s, a city that has a lot to answer for in these musical ends, by the time they packed up their Fenders and called time more than 10million albums had been sold, with the double-platinum Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich the real gem of the lot. Dog Eat Dog came along a little later, in 1992, and by this point the group had really got into gear. Don't expect the same tangible hunger and impact as the inaugural effort, then, but in many ways this is far more complete example of what they were gunning for.

They went through some mad stylistic changes in that time but remain best known for their hit singles 'Tomorrow Night' which hit number 11 in the UK charts and number four gem 'Devil's Answer', which both came in 1971. Neither of them feature on their self-titled album and debut from 1970 which itself made the Top 50 of the UK album charts, but it still packs a real punch with a prog rock feel.

It was a year after the group was formed by singer Paul Rodgers (formerly of the Bad Company) - who was responsible for enlisting Led Zep's Jimmy Page - released their self-titled debut, becoming one of the most successful rock outfits of their era and playing across the UK and US in the years after. This second album of live sounds captures their extraordinary energy in a show which was recorded for live FM Radio Broadcast.

Review: The Firm was a UK supergroup that formed in 1984. Singer Paul Rodgers was the man responsible for getting together with guitarist Jimmy Page and the group became one of the most successful rock outfits of their era. They released a brace of brilliant albums - the self-titled debut in 1985, then a year later Mean Business - and played across the UK and US in the years after. One of the best shows they did was at the Oakland Coliseum on 15th March. Their extraordinary energy and fine set list was recorded for live FM Radio Broadcast and now you can listen back to the whole thing on vinyl for the first time ever.

Review: If ever there was a pivotal year in the history of a band then Fleetwood Mac's 1977 was probably it. Having dived deep into the world of hard, blues-infused, psychedelic rock & roll for most of their previous albums, they turned to the self-titled debut, also known as Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, and its slightly poppier, more commercially saleable sound as a jumping off point here, but instead wound up making something that's hard to define in reductive terms like 'pop'. Selling over ten million copies within months of release, the three-way vocals and insanely catchy hooks resonated worldwide, and a global tour ensued. Their show at Tokyo's legendary Nippon Budokan was a standout, and this live recording shows exactly why, presenting all facets of a band that have successfully cracked many sounds.

David Bowie & Trent Reznor Interview (10:39)
Review: "I don't know where I'm going from here, but I promise it won't be boring," David Bowie famously quipped at his 50th Birthday concert in Madison Square Garden. That was 1997, and sadly we can now look back at the years between then and now as the last the icon would enjoy, although given the pantheons of unreleased material, music and other, we still have more than his legacy alone to learn from. He certainly kept his word, then, not least by opting to work with Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails, a band that found inspiration in myriad styles and sounds, from Human League to Pink Floyd, carving out a 'industrial electronic rock' niche for themselves. In addition to tours and one-off shows, recordings of their collaborations are remarkable, generating fresh wholes from the enormous sums of these parts.

Review: This is one of the very many classic David Bowie broadcasts out there. It was recorded on his Hours tour to support his 21st studio album of the same name, and was the last he did for the EMI sub-label. It was the first full album to be made available by a major artist for full internet download, a full two weeks before the physical release. The album makes use of many instruments and took Bowie away from electronica. Guitarist Page Hamilton played in the tour as did Mark Plati on lead and rhythm guitars, Gail Ann Dorsey on bass guitar, Sterling Campbell on drums, and Mike Garson on keyboards. This set was recorded in December 1999 at the London Astoria for FM broadcast.

Review: Gaucho was the seventh studio album from soft-pop-rock-jazzists and yacht rock pioneers Steely Dan. Released in 1980, they would embark on a tour to mark the record's arrival, and then vanish for 20 years. Or at least go on extended hiatus. That's not surprising, given the back story here, with widespread creative disagreements and a three-way legal battle with MCA and Warner Bros ensuing. And an original budget blown by the sheer scope of 42 musicians contributing to the work. The Lost Gaucho is almost an unplugged version of all that. These are the alternative versions recorded in the early sessions that led to the final LP. Broadcast on radio as part of the promotional campaign, they've been compiled on this joyfully smooth and seductive package, which fans need in their lives.

Review: When the 1992 self-titled debut full-length from Los Angeles melodic metal-leaning hard rockers Unruly Child finally saw release, it received no vinyl issue Stateside while the European pressing was condensed and pressed onto a single LP, which for a near-hour long work is criminal by today's audiophilic standards. Three decades on and the project has finally been rewarded the double album repress it always required, complete with a remaster by renowned engineer Eliot Kissileff. Big riffs, bigger swagger, and teeming with anthemic cuts such as 'Take Me Down Nasty' and 'Criminal', there's likely never been a more ideal time to welcome such an unruly child

This one collects together their covers from between 1963 and 1964 when they were often found adding their own blues-rock twist to well known pop hits. The likes of 'Memphis Tennessee', the Lennon-McCartney penned 'I Wanna Be Your Man' and '(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66' all feature.
