Review: Tinted Windows is the wondrously, almost hilariously cast supergroup comprising guitarist James Iha of Smashing Pumpkins fame, Taylor Hanson of Hanson, bassist Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne, and Cheap Trick's Bun E. Carlos. Brace yourself for a reminder of this ingenious grouping this 2024: the debut self-titled album was first released in 2009 and though it intended to synergise each founding members' successes as part of their earlier projects, also did fantastically well at portraying a contemporary take on the 70s and 80s pop rock quintessence. Lead singles 'Nothing To Me' are instantly reminiscent of Ferris Bueller in the drop-top, though all come dashed, even sprinkled, with a hint of 90s pubic power punk a-la 'Stacy's Mom', as we should expect from a Fountains Of Wayne adjacent.

Now, however, we return to 'Praise' with two special edits cut to a limited edition 12" sampler, harkening a return to the form and a bigger box set in the series to come, a decade on; first we're met with Myrna Summers and her choir on 'So Much To Live For', which lays bare the holy-ghostly hooks and kick-clapped stamps; then there's a similar edit of Bishop Jeff Banks' 'Jerusalem', which whips out the Hammonds and sopranos for the B.

Review: The latest full-length LP from Aural Imbalance continues serenely on the heels of an already well-travelled career. Now seeming to avow the often almost eternal sounding nature of breaks and drum & bass, a title like Infinity Spectrum implies that this is a career that could happily go on forever, were we not mere mortals. As ever, the album is interstellar in theme, each track doubling up in function as names that could also easily denote distant star systems or galaxies; 'Aurealis' and 'Alpha' are standout cuts in this regard, pitting rolling pitched 808s, rattling arps, and nebular pads together, behooving the ever-central breakbeat that sets us off on a journey to find some glistening lost alien artifact. Though there is a destination, it really is about the journey; by the time we reach the C-side, 'Slow Motion' ups the sonic sulphur content with a detour through an airier, major-keyed gas-planetary iceworld, while wondrous scoped-out rollage judderer 'Apparation' proves that even space provides its own mirages, its own fata morgana.

Once she signed to Capital record a few years later, she had a second top 40 hit with 'Don't Touch Me'. Review: Named after the classic Czech sci-fi animated film of the same name, veteran producer DIN returns as the nextmost focus of the Coming From Returning To label, who offer up a fresh reissue of his 1992 techno classic. Then five good years into the alias (DIN was formed in 1987), producer Pupka Frey began making his distinct brand of electro-disko as a personal exploration of futuristic and analog dance textures. This EP is an 'artificial' alt soundtrack to the movie, which was otherwise histrionic and over-funky for the tastes of most techno enjoyers. Highlights here have got to be the glassy 'B-Minis' and the opening 'Travesty' (the tune's ironically anything but).

The title track is both jitterbugging and propulsive, fitting in reams off bass beneath its earcatching toppy snaps; then things get increasingly weird, with 'My Jordan' working in childish laughs and indecipherable hahas between the woodblocks, and 'Something For' going full-on acid blues remix; all in all, we get the impression of a weirdo's favourite, one that nonetheless knows exactly the kinds of uncanny emotions it hopes to solicit.

There are tight tech beats with astral pads from Admo, dubby late night rollers from Felipe Valenzuela & Dorian Paic, more intense and ghetto-fried joints from Phillipp Boss & Dennis and much more besides. As a source of some vibrant and innovative sounds for Das looking for an edge, this comp is a must-cop.

D.C. native and soulful stalwart William DeVaughn was backed by some of the best session musicians in Philadelphia with MFSB men Norman Harris, Vince Montana and John Davis all impressing. The hit single 'Give the Little Man a Great Big Hand' is well worth checking.

Review: Contemporary indie icon St. Vincent's (Anne Erin Clark's) seventh full-length record All Born Screaming follows up 2021's The Nowhere Inn, and contrasts to that record with its intense introspective plunging of the personal depths, to find what Clark deemed her own sonic vocabulary. Arriving at a distinction she dubbed 'post-plague pop', All Born Screaming centres on a crooked and menacing sound with a reckless spirit, with lead cuts like 'Broken Man' giving raw Knife-like instrumentation and masc monarchic ironies on the lyrics, as if to suggest a significant patriarchal downfall to come. That line is said to be representative of the album's mood as a whole; "that lustre and swagger that you feel right before things go terribly wrong!"

Review: Jeff Mills throws a spaghettifying curveball with latest EP 'The Trip'. Themed after the terrifying notion of entering a black hole, and likening this to the vicarious yet no less enjoyable illusions of grandeur that might go hand in hand with attending a Millsart rave, 'The Trip' has been routinely billed as "the world's first cosmic opera" (in its performance incarnation), and attempts to sonically answer the question as to what exactly happens when we cross that fateful event horizon, in ambitious, live-jam-born-recorded form. Via eight cosmic suites of terrifying techno wizardry (we'd expect nothing less from the Belleville 'blazer), Jeff Mills brings his originally live, light-eating vision to vinyl, nailing the cosmick perceptual horror of being "sucked in" through dust-bitten repetitions, descending mind-melts and dissociative-detuned fugues - the latter is most intriguing; 'When Time Stops' is the track of choice for exploring Mills' least repetitious and most improvisatory tendencies.

Commuting Part 1 opens with the quick-stepping and deep dub techno rhythms of 'Octave Echoes' which is delightfully fluid. 'Stable Velocity' then bids up impossible smooth dub loops and watery pads into something buoyant and stirring both physically and emotionally, and 'Self Assessment' then ups the pace with thudding, infectious kicks and plenty of rippling synth details. Building on the sonic landscape he began exploring with Foray in 2015, Subheim strips away percussive elements in favor of space, ambience, and melody. Each composition feels like a fleeting memory, unfolding and dissolving into echoing nothingness, much like the passing lights of a train or a distant melody heard in a dream. Despite its lack of percussion, Raeon maintains a sense of movement and harmony, with each track contributing to an open-ended narrative of stillness and motion, darkness and light. Filled with bittersweet hopefulness and a longing for new beginnings, Raeon seamlessly blends nostalgic synthesised sounds with neoclassical elements, striking a delicate balance between past and future, melancholy and anticipation. Subheim is remarkable at storytelling in his music.

Review: If ever there was a band destined to get the Analogue Productions treatment, it's surely Steely Dan. The go-to group for audioophiles, yacht-sailing dreamers and frankly everyone in the whole damn world, the Dan's highly-prized studio obsession deserves the finest possible fidelity. Originally released in 1980, Gaucho was Walter Becker and Donald Fagen's swansong until reuniting in 2000. Musically, it was a departure for the group as they honed their compositions into more patient, atmospheric pieces which held down a mood instead of striving for dramatic sweeps and shifts, but that doesn't detract one jot from the might of tunes such as 'Babylon Sisters' and the eternally funky 'Glamour Profession'. Now those songs sound the best they possibly could thanks to this exacting reproduction.

Review: Ravi Shankar is often cited as one of the most famous and influential sitar players in the world and none of his albums do quite as much justice to that claim than Shankar Family & Friends, first released in 1974. Unlike many of his former albums, this LP places a front-and-centre focus on Shankar's family members, with whom he collaborates throughout the album. Though, that's not to say it doesn't also come with commercial draws - indeed, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Billy Preston and Tom Scott also make cameo appearances. For all its humble harkenings-back to familial source, Shankar does not hesitate to fuse his own ancestral Indian classical music with the Western pop and jazz elements of his friends. The likes of 'I Am Missing You' and 'Jaya Jagadish Hare' are nonetheless utter dreamscapes, and thanks to this reissue via the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab series, this version comes as the highest-quality version of the record yet.

Review: The amusingly named Lebanese free improvisation trio A Trio, formed in 2002 by Mazen Kerbaj Sharif Sehnaoui and Raed Yassin, are considered by some to be the oldest and most active free improv group in the Arab world. With such status comes ever-more impetus to release new music; The Binding Third is their first full-length LP since 2014, recorded live at the Sound Disobedience Festival in Ljubljana, Slovenia in 2019. Composed of two long-form pieces, we hear the trumpeter, reed player and double bassist respectively make use of extended and prepared techniques, in turn to create dizzying drones, textures, and noises that challenge the conventional roles of their instruments. The music is intense, dynamic, and unpredictable, reflecting the trio's 20+ years of experience and experimentation.

Review: Not originally envisioned as a musical, Descendants is the American musical fantasy TV film directed by Kenny Ortega, and manifests as the fantasy Disney crossover to end all fantasy Disney crossovers. Review: Reissued via French label Rotorelief on its 35th Anniversary year, Chance Meeting on a Dissecting Table of a Sewing Machine and an Umbrella is the debut album of trailblazing noise and avant-garde musician Steven Stapleton. Catapulting Stapleton's macabre alias to success in the thin breath of just three through-composed drone pieces, this sonic statement was unparalleled at the time (1979), with its unusual mix of prepared tinkerings, feedback drones and cog-jams famously causing Sounds magazine to momentarily abandon their five-star rating system to specially award the album five full question marks. Absurdly sadistic, the album is also known for its original publication of the infamous Nurse With Wound List in the liner notes, which listed the entirety of Stapleton's influences going into the album's making - some acts named therein were so obscure that many fans speculate as to whether they were invented. An exemplary work of outsider music - or at least, one that is infamous by proxy to the more baneful works of the outsider music archetype - get ready to hear all things spectral over the more sustained tones: chains rattling, chairs squeaking, shakers shaking, even monologues in French.

Review: From Then 'Til Now marks Roots Architects' debut full-length album, a monumental project bringing together over 50 of Jamaica's most iconic session musicians. Spanning from the birth of reggae in the late 1960s to the present day, the album is a celebration of the unsung heroes of reggae music: the rhythm builders or Roots Architects. Conceived by Swiss keyboardist and producer Mathias Liengme, the album is the culmination of years of dedication to honoring Jamaica's musical legacy. Liengme's journey began in 2013 with "The Inspirators" project, leading to his immersion in Kingston's studio scene and the eventual formation of Roots Architects. Recorded in Kingston studios over February and March 2017, the album features a stellar lineup of veteran musicians aged 60 to 85, including legends like Robbie Lyn, Fil Callender, and Dalton Browne. Together, these Roots Architects revive the spirit of reggae, creating nine instrumental tracks that pay homage to their enduring legacy and timeless artistry.
