  1. Want You In My Soul (club mix) (8:18)
  2. Want You In My Soul (Summer In London edit) (4:51)
Review: Stee Downes is one of contemporary house music's most prominent vocalists and here he lends his silky tones to Freerange, Defected and OM Records associate, Lovebirds for this new one on South Street. "Want You In My Soul" is a mix of old and new, where disco percussion and cosmic synths nestle alongside a mid tempo house groove with plenty of warmth. Downes' vocals are the loved up icing on the romantic groove cake. Flip over for the "Summer In London Edit" - a more stripped back and direct version, perfect for outdoor stages as the sun beats down.

Review: Guidance Is Internal 3 is the third and final instalment of a three part compilation series that has pulled together the best music from Callisto's golden period on legendary Chicago label Guidance Recordings. Everything you would expect of a real visionary is here - depth, spirituality and cosmic vibes aplenty. Super sweet kick drums that just keep on pulling you in define the opener, while things are cast more free on the intergalactic "Basic Lytes." "Ambent II" sounds like an early Omar S tune and "Meta" is gorgeously dreamy. House doesn't get any better.

Review: Back in the late 1990s French twosome DJ Deep and Julien Jabre released a handful of fine - and now hard to find - EPs as "The Deep". 1997's "The Earth EP" was arguably the strongest of the lot, hence this re-mastered reissue from the on-point Mint Condition camp. Heading up the EP is "Love Your Brother", a fine fusion of swinging, tech-tinged grooves, US garage style organ stabs and effortlessly soulful vocal samples that sounds every bit as far-sighted in 2020 as it did back in the day. Over on the flip you'll find the stripped back and slightly spacey sounding "Love Your Dub" revision, as well as original flipside "Gratiot's Tiger", a slightly woozier and dreamier chunk of deep house/tech-house fusion.

  3. Robin Ordell - "Rainbowitz" (5:31)
  4. Darren Allen - "Strange World" (7:05)
Review: As with its predecessors, the latest missive from Youandewan's Small Hours imprint gathers together a quartet of cuts from a variety of unheralded artists and rising stars. The main man offers up the deep, drowsy, '90s tech-house warmth of "Loophole" on side A, alongside Monochrome vs Velasco's "Paranoid", which is a similarly starry, sci-fi-flecked skip through intergalactic deep house chunkiness. Over on side B, Robin Ordell impresses via the clanking, bass-propelled tech-funk of "Rainbowitz", while Darren Allen brilliantly joins the dots between deep house, jazz and tech-house electronics on the imaginative and enjoyable "Strange World".

  2. Spacebunny - "Spacebunny" (6:29)
  3. Coke, Stoned & Bailey's - "Your Dad" (6:01)
Review: Surreal was a sublabel of Swag Records that operated around the tech house scene of the mid to late '90s. After 17 years of silence, the label awakens from its slumber to repress a few of the choicest cuts from the back catalogue. First up is Ron & Roland, otherwise known as Laurant Webb, whose acid-laced "Nassaur Bassed Party" sounds as fresh and infectious as it did back in '96. Spacebunny's self-titled opus takes thing deeper, but there's still a strident metallic groove that harks back to the early days of tech house in fine style. Cheeky trio Coke, Stoned & Bailey's only made a couple of drops on Surreal, but "Your Dad" is surely one of the strongest - a rubbery acid line and splashes of dub all over the shop.

Review: [Emotional] Especial stalwart and all-round underground progenitor Richard Sen makes a welcome return launching new label Darkness Is Your Candle with some of his inimitable muscular wave-tinted machine wares for seedy dancefloors. "No Sameness" is a stellar lead track - all evil one-note bass, freaky synth wriggles and the odd touch of splashy mixing desk FX. "Darkness Is Your Candle" is a touch more anthemic with its big melodic leads, but no less seductive. "Into The Abyss" completes the package with another brooding workout that slips in the cracks between vintage techno and minimal wave - classic tropes delivered impeccably.

Review: Garage house forever! Plastik People keep the fire burning like few others, and they press their intentions up clear as day with Danny J Lewis and Mike City's joyously catchy "I'm So 90s" with its sweet, soulful 'back in the 90s refrain'. It's sentimental and cheeky in equal measure, and the consummate garage house bumper from a label that do it so well. Marc Cotterell then pops up on the B side with "Jumpin '94", an organ soaked sizzler with delicious piano sprinkled on top and all the bump and flex you could wish for.

Review: There's always a sense of reverent elation around a new drop from Theo Parrish, and he's not disappointing on this latest joint. Reports suggest this is the precursor to a new album, and there's a classic feel to this track that hints at very exciting times ahead. Parrish's sparks shine oh-so bright when he's sparring with the right vocalist, and Maurissa Rose seems to be giving him the right inspiration on "This Is For You". He's created the kind of understated soul statement that inhabits some of his most treasured albums, using a raw and simple drum machine backing to achingly beautiful key refrains that melt around Rose's voice on the vocal A side, and give rise to a sublime instrumental version on the flip.

Review: Over the last few years, Aroop Roy has offered up some of the most interesting and dynamic re-edits around, variously turning his attention to disco, boogie and vintage Brazilian jazz-funk, soul and dancefloor samba. Here he turns his scalpel to a couple of heaters towards the jazzier end of the jazz-funk spectrum. Head first for A-side "Reach N Search", a spiraling slab of horn-heavy dancefloor jazz underpinned by a heavy funk groove, before turning your attention to flipside jam "Monterey". This is arguably the more accessible and ear catching of the pair, thanks in no small part to the original cut's heavy jazz-funk/disco-funk fusion vibes.

Now the mysterious project returns with some more deep house heat that takes a classic sample-a-delic approach to the craft - all hazy funk loops and a dreamy finish to suit long, sunny sessions under blue Tuscan skies. From the sultry horns of "Track 1" to the catchy vocal n' piano hooks on "Track 2", this is classically crafted deep house that should appeal to fans of Max Graef and Jitterbug alike.

Review: Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell's latest round of spiritual and percussive dancefloor workouts were apparently "randomly selected" from the vaults of DJ tools and work-in-progress tracks tucked away under the floorboards at Sacred Rhythm HQ. Naturally there's nothing genuinely "half-finished" here, just a quartet of cuts worthy of your attention. He begins with "Elegua", a West African style workout that boasts call-and-response group vocals and a loose, languid tribal rhythm track, before moving towards heavy Afro-house territory via the deep, dark analogue bass, machine beats and densely layered percussion of "Makussa PT Three". Over on side B, "Di Mayo" layers sharp, spacey synths and lashings of special effects to a dubbed-out Afro-house rhythm, while the gloriously colourful "Afrofunkjazz" lives up to its title.

Review: Given that he learned from one of the true masters of deep house, Ron Trent, it's perhaps not that surprising that Trinidadian Deep's releases are always rich in dreamy pads, positive chord progressions, intricate musical touches and effortlessly soulful deep house grooves. His latest outing on Neroli is a terrific example of this, with title track "Some Sweet Ting" offering a tactile, life-affirming journey through starry synths, twinkling piano solos, jazzy bass, layered percussion and huggable chords. Flip to the B-side for the poignant, enveloping intergalactic deep house brilliance of "Atmospheric Funk" and "Sounds of the Rebel", whose darting synth-bass and glistening lead lines are as colourful as the accompanying pads are deep.

New album "You Want" doesn't exactly reverse this trend, but it is far more rooted in his particular brand of seductive, off-kilter deepness and techno-tinged hypnotism than recent singles. That's undeniably a good thing, because nobody does crunchy, machine driven club jams better than the Motor City producer. There are nods towards Italian style piano house, disco, broken beat, jazz funk, Masters at Work and - more surprisingly - industrial techno (see the filthy closing cut) - but the resultant cuts don't sound like anything other than tried-and-tested Omar-S club jams.

Review: Starting 2020 like they mean to go on, West London's 2000 Black crew serves up an essential four-tracker created during jam sessions between regular collaborators Kaidi Tatham, Akwasi Mensah, Matt Lord and Dennis "Dego" McFarlane (Ranks). As with their previous collaborative releases, its' four tracks variously join the dots between deep house, bruk, jazz-funk and mellower flavours. As usual, the beats are tight and weighty, the musicianship exceptional (Kaidi's keys-playing being a particular highlight), the chords deep and the lead lines memorable. While all four tracks are excellent, our picks are the rubbery bruk-up bliss of "Return of Pastor Shadrach" and the sun-kissed broken house warmth of "Life After Subway".

Review: The much loved Melodies International label takes another step away from its usual remit here by reissuing a second bit of classic house music following on from the excellent Hanna 12" late last year. It comes from cult London pair Synchrojack aka Dean Slydell and Greg Wheeler who first put it out on Ferox in 1995. "Daylight" is high speed, high class house with bubbling drums, bass and synths all making for a powerful yet fluid groove that is underpinned with punchy kicks that won't fail to make you move. Flipside "900th Lifetime" is similar in its full flavour grooves and tightly knotted bass. Both cuts are sure to be everywhere this summer.

To celebrate, the label's current owners (BMG fact fans) have decided to offer up a series of celebratory compilations featuring some of the imprint's biggest dancefloor hits. There's plenty to set the pulse racing on this first volume, from the stab-heavy, rave-era filth of CLS's "Can You Feel It (In House Dub)" and the wild acid insanity of Wink's "Higher State of Consciousness (Tweekin Acid Funk)", to the bouncy, mid-to-late-90s US garage chunkiness of Groove Patrol's "Need Your Love", Hardrive's "Deep Inside" and the organ-heavy sweatiness of George Morel's "Let's Groove".

Review: US vet DJ Dan is back once again with the Slammin Trax series, bringing some of his spiciest originals and remixes onto vinyl for maximum party damage. "Engine No 9" does a fine job of chopping up a classic hip hop vocal lick and strapping it to a chunky big room house jam. Dan's remix of Bryan Jones brings even bigger levels of hype, not least around the monster breakdown and drop. "Conjunction Funktion" brings a more flamboyant funky flavour to the table without losing that massive impact, and "Command Your Soul" fires off a plethora of riotous licks, samples, hits and stabs while keeping the funk at the forefront.

Title track "Critical" is simply superb: a chunky, sweat-soaked fusion of bumpin' deep house grooves, wiggly acid lines and Detroit style sci-fi techno sounds that's as ear-pleasing as it is floor-friendly. Voightmann's accompanying remix is great too, with the German producer re-casting the track as a woozy trip through deep space tech-house goodness. Elsewhere on the EP, "Journey" is a bolder, warmer and more percussive deep house cut rich in techno style electronics and "Axis" sits somewhere between deep electro and jacking Chicago house.

Now this lesser spotted artist makes a welcome return on Deep Explorer with some sophisticated adventures in the realm of truly dreamy house music. "Alternate Dimensions" creates a beautiful, swirling concoction out of diva vocals and gilded piano chords, which Man-Drake slows down and funks up in a seriously tasteful way on the remix. "Parallel World" finds Mahal digging into a trippy, hypnagogic wormhole of a track underpinned by a sumptuous acid line, which Brad P does away with for a more airy version before Rai Scott tackles "Temporary Zone Complex" in a beatless style.

  4. Avenue Of The Palms (Night mix) (5:16)
Review: Italian disco maestro Massimiliano Pagliara presents his first full length EP for Munich's Permanent Vacation. "Nothing Stays In One Place For Long" features four tracks that prove that there's a wide variety in the Panorama Bar resident's sonic repertoire: from the steely chord driven techno of the title track, to evocative cosmic disco journeys more similar to his usual work as heard on the blissful "Accidentally We Rushed". On the flip, we've got two versions of "Avenue Of The Palms" - the Sunset mix is a serving of sun kissed deep house balearica, while the Night mix is a more upbeat and evocative version that's perfect for the later hours.

  1. 34100 (7:10)

  3. Line Of Questioning (7:08)
  4. Shelter (6:50)
Review: The latest transmission on Aesthetic comes from Nolga, previously spotted alongside Michael James on the Hoarder label. The sound on this record is pure, classy minimal house executed with a fine ear for detail, leading in with the deep tracking "34100" before locking into the equally immersive "XYZ". The shuffle is strong on this 12", keeping up on the flip with the subtly dubby, utterly funky "Line Of Questioning" before launching into the crafty, bouncy tones of "Shelter". Immaculately produced with maximum body response in mind, this is another strong outing for Aesthetic and a promising next step for a highly promising producer.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz
  1. Jazz Carnival (LP mix) (8:59)
  2. Jazz Carnival (Space Jazz mix - Global Communication remix) (11:15)
Review: We hear on the grapevine that there could be some seriously desirable Global Communication vinyl reissues on the way in 2020. To tide us over until then, Far Out has decided to reissue one of the legendary West Country duo's most celebrated and sought-after remixes: their 1996 "Space Jazz" remix of Azymuth classic "Jazz Carnival". Pritchard and Middleton's version is a spacey deep house epic of intergalactic proportions, with subtle elements of the Brazilian band's loose and languid '90s re-recording of the track (the B-side "LP Mix") weaving in and out of a warm, rich and hypnotic groove. It's one of the most dancefloor-friendly of all Global Communication remixes - many were straight ambient or downtempo rubs - but also one of Mark Pritchard and Tom Middleton's finest.

  4. Jamahr - "Underwater" (6:42)
Review: Politics Of Dancing continues celebrating its fifth anniversary with a cast of crucial house warriors keeping the flame burning bright. First up on this 12" is Chris Stussy, who whips up an especially funky concoction with the bubbling "Monday 8th", before DJOKO and T Jacques dub things out in style with the swirling but thumping "Directions". The ever-prolific Michael James appears on the B-side with "Solstice", a mystically tinged deep house bumper laden with zippy sound FX and sprinkled with subtly swung groove. Jamahr completes the set with "Underwater", a deep immersion bath of sound that edges towards classic techno while keeping the groove on the straight and narrow.

  2. Share Me Baby (feat Mike Anderson) (6:40)
  3. Overflow (6:35)
Review: From early drops on Tresor to a productive run on D, Detroit Dancer, Chapter 2 and other labels, Santonio Echols has already lived a long and illustrious career in house music. The latest notch on his catalogue comes via Sudd Wax, and finds the US producer in killer shape. "Blue Skies" is a lean, direct cut with the right balance between heavy rhythm section and smooth chords. "Share Me Baby" features some vocal turns from Mike Anderson getting all romantic over another tough beat and mellow keys, while "Overflow" takes things deeper with some progressive melodic refrains that gently shift throughout the course of the track.

  4. DJ EFX - "Gravity" (7:24)
Review: The first Archivators 12" featured some choice remixes from Joey Negro amongst others deep cover gems from the deep house fraternity. The theme continues on this second 12", which leads in style with a shimmering remix of Vincent Inc by Julian Sanza. Next up comes the eternal, infectious anthem "Music Is My Life" by Colonel Abrams - the seriously deadly club dub no less. Nu jazz veteran Nigel Hayes kicks off the B side with the uplifting broken beat flavour of "Jabawaki", before DJ EFX closes the record out with smoky chords n keys aplenty on "Gravity".
