Review: Like many releases for Record Store Day, this is a rather rare and super expensive classic that gets a welcome reissue to make it available to us all once more. The Dome City Rock Orchestra hailed from New Orleans made heavy jazz funk sounds with tight as-you-like musicians all excelling on their instruments. The A-side is packed with energy, swirling synths and big bongos, wild flutes and cosmic vibes all making for a thrilling dancefloor gem. Part Two carries on where Part One left off, and both leave you feeling breathless but ready for more.

Review: Pulled from the earliest days of The Soft Machine when they were closer to a psychedelic rock band than a tripped-out jazz concern, Universal Japan have reproduced a very limited single version of 'Why Are We Sleeping?'. The song itself is still a nebulous, twisting and turning freak ride riding on a satisfyingly heavy rhythm section, embellished with organs and following droll poetry to the pure 60s burst of the chorus, as masterful now as it was mind-blowing back in 1968. On the B-side, 'Joy Of A Toy' is a subtly funky affair laced with languid wah wah guitar and artful dynamic shifts from the mellow beginnings to a rollicking beatdown by the crescendo, and all in under three minutes. Collectors will especially enjoy the Japanese artwork on this unique single, but just having these two gems on a handy 7" is worth the price of entry alone.

Review: Here's a cut which might well break out some misty-eyed reminiscence for those who were locked into the UK's rare groove and jazzdance scenes in the late 80s. Cheryl Glasgow's career was brief, but she gifted us two wonderful singles, and it's the second of those Numero have opted to reissue right here. 'Glued To The Spot' has that humid, rhythmic quality which would have gone down a storm with the Balearic set, not least with the attendant club and instrumental mixes on the original 12", but for our money it's Glasgow's understated voice, which lands somewhere between Shara Nelson and Sade, which gives the track its magic.

Review: What we would give to go digging in the vast vaults of influential soul label JB's. Well, thankfully, they do it themselves each Record Store Day and as such we have some real treasure here with Richard Caiton's swooning and soul-drenched love song 'Thank You.' It's a super rare one from back in 1978 that is a real piece of New Orleans soul history (it is eye wateringly pricey for an original, too, with the only current one listed at just L2500.) On the flip is another lush modern soul tune 'Where Is The Love' which has been arranged by Wardell Quezerque.

It has been bootlegged many times before but this is an official pressing for Record Store Day 2023. 'What's The Use?' is super feel good, with gloriously sunny horns, nice loose percussion and organic, woody drums all topped off with Tony's buttery and emotive vocals. Review: Weldon Johnathan Irvine is enjoying a return to the spot light this month as Dynamite Cuts serve up a trio of reissues of some of his best work. He recorded it all during the 80s, when the British funk, soul and jazz scene was at its most vibrant best and this is a fine expand of that. As always with this famously relaxed and easy going artist work, the music reflects his warm spirit in sound. This limited 45rpm opens with a special 7" cut of 'Deja Vu' which is mellifluous and glowing thanks to the molten Rhodes chords. On the flip is 'I Am' and then 'Bananas' gets you shaking your limbs with its off-grid beats and busy chord work.

Review: Back in the 80s, Weldon Johnathan Irvine was a core part of the sul, jazz and funk scene. He was an amiable man who put out plenty of records that reflected that and now some of them are making their way onto 45rpm for the first time ever. This latest 7" opens with 'Fat Mouth' which is a busy and dynamic cut with mad keys work, crashing drums and a real sense of urgency as it hurries along. There is a more reflective and thoughtful mood to the gorgeous flip side, which encourages the mind to wander on the heart chords and breezy grooves.
