Review: Tinted Windows is the wondrously, almost hilariously cast supergroup comprising guitarist James Iha of Smashing Pumpkins fame, Taylor Hanson of Hanson, bassist Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne, and Cheap Trick's Bun E. Carlos. Brace yourself for a reminder of this ingenious grouping this 2024: the debut self-titled album was first released in 2009 and though it intended to synergise each founding members' successes as part of their earlier projects, also did fantastically well at portraying a contemporary take on the 70s and 80s pop rock quintessence. Lead singles 'Nothing To Me' are instantly reminiscent of Ferris Bueller in the drop-top, though all come dashed, even sprinkled, with a hint of 90s pubic power punk a-la 'Stacy's Mom', as we should expect from a Fountains Of Wayne adjacent.

Review: The latest full-length LP from Aural Imbalance continues serenely on the heels of an already well-travelled career. Now seeming to avow the often almost eternal sounding nature of breaks and drum & bass, a title like Infinity Spectrum implies that this is a career that could happily go on forever, were we not mere mortals. As ever, the album is interstellar in theme, each track doubling up in function as names that could also easily denote distant star systems or galaxies; 'Aurealis' and 'Alpha' are standout cuts in this regard, pitting rolling pitched 808s, rattling arps, and nebular pads together, behooving the ever-central breakbeat that sets us off on a journey to find some glistening lost alien artifact. Though there is a destination, it really is about the journey; by the time we reach the C-side, 'Slow Motion' ups the sonic sulphur content with a detour through an airier, major-keyed gas-planetary iceworld, while wondrous scoped-out rollage judderer 'Apparation' proves that even space provides its own mirages, its own fata morgana.

Review: This is the first reissue of the much-anticipated compilation gathering together many gems from the Louisiana born singer Bettye Swann. This compilation gathers and enormous 22 tracks from the career to highlight her career. Bettye rose to to acclaim with her 1967 soul classic 'Make Me Yours' which not only climbed to #21 on the Billboard 100 but also became a #1 on the rhythm and blues charts. Once she signed to Capital record a few years later, she had a second top 40 hit with 'Don't Touch Me'. The compilation has so many underrated songs from her career that just didn't get the attention that they deserved - see the excellent 'Don't You Ever Get Tired (Of Hurting Me)' and the amazing cover of 'Tell it like it is'. Review: Identity Theft is the solo electronic music of Michael Buchanan, commencing in 2011 with the album Night Workers. Having previously released on labels such as Oraculo Records, Treue Um Treue, Record Label Records, and Katabatik, here he continues to astonish with the atmospheric, brooding and liturgical electro opus, Omnia Vitas. Review: Dias De Campo goes big with its third release: Amigos 001 is a bumper triple vinyl album that proves a few things - one, that the label already has a lot of friends, and two that they all know how to make some super fresh house. Many of these names are not familiar which makes this collection all the more interesting. There are tight tech beats with astral pads from Admo, dubby late night rollers from Felipe Valenzuela & Dorian Paic, more intense and ghetto-fried joints from Phillipp Boss & Dennis and much more besides. As a source of some vibrant and innovative sounds for Das looking for an edge, this comp is a must-cop.

Review: Ravi Shankar is often cited as one of the most famous and influential sitar players in the world and none of his albums do quite as much justice to that claim than Shankar Family & Friends, first released in 1974. Unlike many of his former albums, this LP places a front-and-centre focus on Shankar's family members, with whom he collaborates throughout the album. Though, that's not to say it doesn't also come with commercial draws - indeed, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Billy Preston and Tom Scott also make cameo appearances. For all its humble harkenings-back to familial source, Shankar does not hesitate to fuse his own ancestral Indian classical music with the Western pop and jazz elements of his friends. The likes of 'I Am Missing You' and 'Jaya Jagadish Hare' are nonetheless utter dreamscapes, and thanks to this reissue via the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab series, this version comes as the highest-quality version of the record yet.

Review: The amusingly named Lebanese free improvisation trio A Trio, formed in 2002 by Mazen Kerbaj Sharif Sehnaoui and Raed Yassin, are considered by some to be the oldest and most active free improv group in the Arab world. With such status comes ever-more impetus to release new music; The Binding Third is their first full-length LP since 2014, recorded live at the Sound Disobedience Festival in Ljubljana, Slovenia in 2019. Review: Reissued via French label Rotorelief on its 35th Anniversary year, Chance Meeting on a Dissecting Table of a Sewing Machine and an Umbrella is the debut album of trailblazing noise and avant-garde musician Steven Stapleton. Catapulting Stapleton's macabre alias to success in the thin breath of just three through-composed drone pieces, this sonic statement was unparalleled at the time (1979), with its unusual mix of prepared tinkerings, feedback drones and cog-jams famously causing Sounds magazine to momentarily abandon their five-star rating system to specially award the album five full question marks. Absurdly sadistic, the album is also known for its original publication of the infamous Nurse With Wound List in the liner notes, which listed the entirety of Stapleton's influences going into the album's making - some acts named therein were so obscure that many fans speculate as to whether they were invented. An exemplary work of outsider music - or at least, one that is infamous by proxy to the more baneful works of the outsider music archetype - get ready to hear all things spectral over the more sustained tones: chains rattling, chairs squeaking, shakers shaking, even monologues in French.

Review: From Then 'Til Now marks Roots Architects' debut full-length album, a monumental project bringing together over 50 of Jamaica's most iconic session musicians. Spanning from the birth of reggae in the late 1960s to the present day, the album is a celebration of the unsung heroes of reggae music: the rhythm builders or Roots Architects. Conceived by Swiss keyboardist and producer Mathias Liengme, the album is the culmination of years of dedication to honoring Jamaica's musical legacy. Liengme's journey began in 2013 with "The Inspirators" project, leading to his immersion in Kingston's studio scene and the eventual formation of Roots Architects. Recorded in Kingston studios over February and March 2017, the album features a stellar lineup of veteran musicians aged 60 to 85, including legends like Robbie Lyn, Fil Callender, and Dalton Browne. Together, these Roots Architects revive the spirit of reggae, creating nine instrumental tracks that pay homage to their enduring legacy and timeless artistry.

Review: Wackies Rhythm Force was the Wackie's label's session band and they first put out this album, The Dub Generals, in 1998. It is now reissued on the original label but as a self-titled The Dub Generals LP. It still packs the same essential and pure dub punch that it always did and for that reason, it's a sought-after original that costs a few quid if and when you manage to find one. The label was headed up by dub producer Lloyd "Bullwackie" Barnes who maintained a busy studio in the Bronx and worked with several different key players such as Horace Andy. The label was also a key inspiration for the legendary Berlin dub techno dons Basic Channel.

Review: The first official album released through Ipecac Records; the label of absurdist vocalist extraordinaire Mike Patton (Faith No More, a million other projects), was this self-titled debut from Fantomas, originally unveiled in 1999. A supergroup with no absolutely zero desire to make it easy on listeners, this culmination of Melvins mastermind Buzz Osborne on guitar, Mr. Bungle/Tomahawk/regular Patton cohort Trevor Dunn on bass, and Slayer's Dame Lombardo behind the kit, would coalesce all of their most extreme creative proclivities into one bizarre maelstrom of avant-garde cacophony that can barely be fit into the metal genre. Intended as the musical accompaniment to a fictitious comic book, with all track titles even listed as chapter/page numbers (a unique theme that would follow into all subsequent albums), the work has since been praised for its sonic abandon and artistic fearlessness, with one critic once referring to their avant-garde jazzy grindcore as "dada-metal". The project would also finally offer Patton the opportunity to prioritise his experimental forms of voice music and scat singing over traditional vocal cadence or standard lyricism.

Review: Originally released in 2001, The Director's Cut would serve as the sophomore full-length from avante-garde metal supergroup Fantomas, and is still considered, by many, to be the outfit's definitive statement of absurdity. Expanding their wall-of-sound sonics even further to conjure a form of saccharine abrasion with barrages of tremolo guitar-picking, blast-beating triumphant fury that echoes the likes of Deafheaven or Liturgy in their most epic moments, this is a form of metallic extremity crafted to help espouse negativity, not through negative sonics but by re-channelling said sonics through dexterous and uplifting cataclysms of audible euphoria. This 12" pressing is also coupled with the band's 2022 debut EP The Circle Chant, which has never been available on vinyl before now.
