Review: Amused To Death is the third studio album from Roger Waters outside of his work in Pink Floyd. As one of the fundamental creative forces in the prog behemoth, of course it's hard to separate his solo work from that most famous of bands, but this is indeed its own beast. At times it's an experimental space in which Waters uses space and minimalism to great effect, creating a foreboding sound peppered with speech samples and field recordings. There are of course plenty of more straightforward tracks too, like lead single 'What God Wants, Part 1'. This lavish issue of the 1992 album spreads the music out across four discs and comes in a box set format, a must-have for devoted Floyd and Waters collectors.

You know, that epically huge and super saturated tone (some might call it big and muffy) that has defined the signature sound of so many artists and countless records in the past few decades. It's arguably one of the pedals with the biggest impact on the entire industry, which has seen it modified over and over and over again. So much that you think it's all been done, right? Well, KMA Machines have a surprise for you right here!

Holding three different Gain Modes, a pre- or post-EQ Clean Blend, active Bass and Treble controls, a foot-switchable and expression-controllable parametric Mid-EQ as well as a switchable top-boost for even more raspy, grinding bite, CHIEF DISRUPTOR is the most flexible, beautifully balanced and LOUDEST muff-style pedal you'll ever hear!

Over the years, different muff drives had different levels of gain, so KMA Machines derived three major distinctive gain structures all based on what was thought to be the best versions. The Vintage Mode (VTG) will give you every shade of discrete overdrive, while the Tight Mode will give a more focused and modern tone with less bass and super crisp harmonics. Heavy Mode is the essence of what we all love about muffs. Heavy, sustaining and crazy thick fuzzy distortion, with bone-shaking lows and chewy mids. Just crank the Disruption (Gain) Control and you'll see this in action.

Tonal shaping was one of the true weak points of classic muff pedals, and this has been remedied with the Chief Distruptor. KMA Machines opened the gates to more modern tonal flexibility through the active Bass and Treble controls, which let you boost or cut highs and lows with up to 15 dB, while the parametric Mid-EQ with adjustable centre-frequency and level boost/cut allows you to fine tune the mids with extreme precision, for everything from classic scooped fuzz tones, modern mid-focused dirt tones and all the way to cocked-wah saturation.

You can take complete hands-free control of the Mid-EQ frequency via an expression-pedal. This lets you make instant tone changes on the fly, as well as unleash fast and quacky wah-like sounds or slow and enveloping phaser-like sweeps. If you feel like the filter needs to be more resonant for screaming synth-like sweeps or needs to be subtler, then you can adjust the Q of the Mid-EQ via an internal trimpot. The mids can also be turned on and off via the relay-based soft-switch, allowing you to kick in the mids for soaring solos, cutting chords or when you want to get filter freaky. Having super saturated mids and lows can sometimes result in a perceived loss of highs. To fix this, just engage the Top-Boost to give your high-mids a big push for more crunchy harmonics and bite to cut through any band mix. The Top Boost has been tweaked, but if you feel like it's either too loud or not loud enough, you can also adjust the Top Boost Level via an internal trimpot.

The gain control has been carefully balanced to achieve total control of even the slightest harmonic nuances. So, whether you're looking for low gain drive, crunchy medium gain rhythm tones, singing or saturated lead sounds or skull-crushing doom tones, the Disruption control can and will cover all of them! A lot of gain rules! But gain also means compression, and the more you compress your sound, the more your instrument will lose definition. To preserve your precious core tone the CHIEF DISRUPTOR sports a clean blend control and a toggle switch to define the insert position. Insert your dry signal before the EQ section for a more cohesive sound or place it post-EQ to keep your dry signal completely unaffected.

Last but not least, KMA Machines have implemented stacked headroom topology to keep the EQs from getting saggy when cranked, all which results in the tightest, most punchy and LOUDEST muff-style tone on the market. When talking about signal gain, we all know drive circuits at full tilt can be noisy malice monsters. To help get a grip on your noise floor, PYLON's NOISE GATE is based on a high-performance Blackmerr VCA and provides lightning-fast and precise performance. To find the right spot, simply choose between one of the two detection-range settings and dial in the THRESHOLD to taste. With either softly decaying notes using HIGH mode or a fast-closing response in LOW mode, you're sure to be able to dial in super tight tones when you need it, but without interfering with your sonic signature. Fast palm-mutes? No problem. Decaying notes? Dead simple to accomplish and just so you know when it is operating, the white status LED will also turn blue as soon as the gate starts to act.

Providing up to 30 dB of gain, the integrated BOOST circuit can really help to fine tune your tone, but it can also serve as an attenuator too. Its CUT control will tighten up your low end and is selectable between 65-730 Hz to ensure a mid-focussed and cutting lead sound when pushing your amp's preamp into saturation. Choosing between three different modes for the boost's on/off state, gives you plenty of options on how you want to use it. Either leave it ON to always help shape your tone, OFF if you don't need it, or use SYNC mode so it is activated with the GATE. Both CUT & BOOST knobs are backlit, in order to show you the on/off status of the BOOST section at a glance.

Using transformers in pro-audio gear is nothing new, but while they help to easily match the impedance of low-level and unbalanced signals such as from guitar or bass instruments, PYLON's audio-grade-transformer also gives additional warmth with associated nice low-frequency harmonics. Your guitars, synths or in fact anything you put through the pedal will never have sounded so solid. The pedal gives more 'heft' and enhances the core tone, in a much finer way and without any of the phase issues that can happen when using EQ alone!

However, when the output transformer is boosted even further in level, it can overload many amplifier or pre-amp inputs and make things appear muddy, especially with high levels of additional gain. So, to help tame superfluous low end (especially for rhythm chugging and soloing), KMA Machines added a fixed built-in roll off that affects everything below 65 Hz when the internal BOOST section is activated.

Notes: In the age of digital recording people often reminisce about the golden days of analog tape and the warmth of those spinning tape reels. Many people have spent a lot of money trying to re-create those classic tape like qualities in pieces of hardware.

Dan Snazelle of SNAZZY FX missed something else about tape - the sound that would come out of the stereo on those days when the tape got stuck in the machine, dying a slow and melodic death. He also missed the magic of playing a favorite recording through an old cassette boom-box that had so much warble it was hard to tell what song he was listening to. So Dan decided to design a device that, when pushed to its limits, would sound like the tape was spinning out of control. But he also wanted to make sure the box could take that sound and make it more musical, and, at times, more subtle too.

THE WOW AND FLUTTER can bring you into this warbly world and far, far, beyond.

You might be thinking, what am I going to do with a busted tape machine? Well, that's where things really get interesting - because this box can be used in many, many ways. Depending how hard you hit the Threshold and Warp controls, you can dial the malfunction back to where it creates subtle vibrato, or with shorter delays you can achieve pleasing chorus or pseudo flange-like effects. Turn the Warp up a bit more and you can get far-out pitch shifting, rubber band delays, and plastic portamentos. Turn the Warp up to max and what you'll hear is just plain insanity.

Notes: Tarot is a voltage controlled waveshaping module using different techniques to achieve complex waveforms and multilayered sound: Frequency synthesizer who, besides creating frequency multiplications/division, performs demodulation resulting in FM glissando effect, combined with separate stages of wave folding and rectification-this makes Tarot able to produce whole variety of new timbres due to creation of new harmonics. The shifting of those is induced and animated by offsets controlled from CV inputs. It has a built-in LFO to provide synchronized movement acting in phaser-like or, when set to higher rates, in chorus-like (or PWM) manners which can give some huge synth leads, pads or drones. Notes: 221.x2 is a clean and precise utility module that is equally at home mixing Control Voltage as it is audio. At its simplest, it is two independent 2-to-1 mixers that offer per-channel attenuation and inversion, as well as +6dB of gain available at the summed outputs. With a tap of the "All Mix" button, these separate mixes can be combined into a 4-to-1 mix at the "All Mix" output - meanwhile, the first 1+2 mix is still available at its respective summed output. A rear expansion input and output allows for combining multiple modules into larger systems.

In addition, each channel also offers a Direct Output that can be taken pre or post attenuation/inversion.

A 6-volt offset is normalled into the input jacks of channels 2 and 4. This voltage is available at the channel's Direct Output, as well as added to the mixed outputs. Useful as an offset for mixing with another CV signal, or simply as a voltage source.

The ACL Fader CV Source Module comprises 4 individual faders where each can generate a CV either going between 0 and +5V or 0 and +10V unipolar or -5V and +5V or -10V and +10V bipolar, selectable using 2 jumpers on the backside of the module.

Furthermore there are mute-switches for each channel accompanied with an dual color LED (green/red) which shows the channels mute status. When mute is activated or deactivated, short fade ramps will be generated as well as the fader itself is slightly slew-limited internally in order to generate a smooth CV.

This module is very useful to control VCA's or VC mixers like our VC Amp mix module.

Notes: The SC (Stereo Channel) is a single-channel stereo module for the CGM Eurorack mixer, fully compatible with every other product of this family.

It features a mono/stereo local output which makes it ideal for multitrack recording and advanced parallel processing.

Capturing the nuances and touch sensitivity of an amplifier, El Hombre can go from mild to wild with the turn of the gain knob showing its versatility with each guitar plugged into it. From added harmonics to chewy sag El Hombre has it all. The El Hombre is simple in format but complex in its abilities. The tone section is highly effective allowing you to alter the drive style simply by adjusting the "Bite" control. When you bring the bite control up (Clockwise) it becomes more aggressive, turn it down (counterclockwise) making it smoother and more reminiscent of Dumble tones.

According to the user manual, "Function Junction is a modulation hub combining four independent sections into a single intertwined module that offers much more than the sum of its parts. Although a sum of its parts is one of its best features!"- but Function Junction can do more than a ton of things. In fact, it's downright impressive what's possible with this lovely module.

Function Junction combines three classic analogue modulation sources, ADSR envelope, function generator, and LFO. All are fed into an attenuverting mixer to create a complex modulation junction that can be used as 4 independent sections or in conjunction with each other.
The magic of the module is the ease you can flow from using its functions for basic everyday tasks to creating hyper-complex modulation. The sheer breadth of what you can do and the ease of doing it are simply amazing. Cre8audio highly recommending reading the manual to get a feel for the possibilities.

Notes: The Five Amp is a throwback to SynthRotek's original 5A Power Supply with some upgrades. It uses a quality 12V power brick for the +12V power regulation instead of a +12V converter. The plus side of doing it this way is that whatever amperage the -12V and +5V rails are not using can be used by the +12V rail, which always draws the most of the three.

Five Amp comes in three different power configurations. It is recommend that you select an option based upon your -12V rail draw. For a rule of thumb, Red (with red LEDs) will power a single row of 84 or 104HP, Green will power two rows of 104HP, and Blue will power three to four rows of 104HP.

Notes: Quantus Ampla is a compact four-channel VCA. But it's not just any VCA: with some unique normalizing, mixing, and CV options, and a bit of NE flair, you can use it for tonnes of stuff. From the top, each channel has two independent modes: Amplify, which gives you normal VCA response, and Attenuate, which makes the VCAs close instead of open in response to positive CV.

Notes: Erica Synths Fusion Dual Mixer is designed to mix and overdrive audio signals on the vacuum tube.

Use the Fusion Mixer as two independent 3-input mixers (also for stereo signal mixing) or a 6-input mixer. Special feature of the Fusion Mixer - great tube overdrive effects when level knobs are set to 3 o'clock or above. When used with drum machines, it even emulates sidechain compressors. When used to mix signals from VCOs Fusion Mixer it works as waveshaper, especially, if pulse width modulated pulse signals is used in one of inputs.

All Fusion modules by default are configured to work with regular eurorack PSU.

Due to the fact that cold tube heaters have lower resistance, Fusion modules have significant power consumption peak at startup, when power consumption almost doubles for 1-2 seconds. Welcome to the new SolidGoldFX EM-III Multi-Head Octave Echo; the smallest, most powerful and by far the most versatile SolidGoldFX delay pedal to date.

Building on SGFX's Electroman Delay legacy, the EM-III manages to both echo the past, present and future. With EM-III's wide-ranging yet ultra-intuitive control set, warm analogue-voiced echoes, precise and modern delay, as well as experimental and futuristic sound designs, are all just a single stomp away.

At your feet (or fingers) you have a multi-head tape style echo, with the ability to add in a signal an octave lower to the primary delay head. This can result in dancing, rhythmic delays with body and gravitas, as well as bold washy soundscapes. These two core features are controlled via a single mini-toggle. Flick it left to select between 1, 2 or 3 delay heads or flick it right to toggle the octave effect on and off. From there, just set your Delay Level, Repeats and Time via the knobs or tap in your preferred tempo via the soft-click tap tempo switch and let the good echo times roll.

The EM-III also sports delay modulation introduced via the Flutter control. Keep it at centre position for no modulation. Dial it left for a slow and dreamy chorus-like modulation or right for a faster vibrato, letting you create lush oceanic movement, tape-style crinkles, eerie tension and beautiful dissonance.

The colour knob allows you to engage both high-pass and low-pass filtering. Dead-centre you have a pristine full-frequency digital delay.

Dial it to the left and you cut the highs, creating warm, murky analogue-esque repeats. Dial it to the right and you suck out the lows for crisp and bright tape-style repeats or super thin lo-fi delays.

EM-III also brings interactive warp and glitch features to the tonal table by pressing and holding either Tap, Bypass or both at the same time. Hold Tap to increase the repeats until self-oscillation, creating a swelling wall of sound. Hold Bypass to replicate the sound of a tape motor on the fritz and a tape reel snapping, or hold both for glorious noise seances that will act as the perfect song/set closer.

Additional features include soft-touch, relay based, true bypass switching with the option of buffered trails, top jacks and up to a full second of delay time.

The Coma Reactor boasts the crunchy sounds of the PT2399 chip, but adds a number of useful routing possibilities that really open it up for sound mangling that transcends the norm.

Independent volume controls for dry, wet as well as FX loop return allow you to blend in clean, delayed and affected sounds to suit your needs. A CV input on the module increases or decreases the delay time, going from slight tape-echo warbles to some truly seasick pitch shifting. A buffered clean through allows you to pass an unaffected unity gain to a mixer or other device.

The Send/Return path allows you to process your delay signal through another effects unit. Without anything plugged in, a truly nasty bandpass filter lurks in the delay feedback path. The 2022 edition of Coma Reactor features Frequency (CV controllable) and Resonance knobs for this filter.

Lastly, this completely delirious module is also capable of generating noises and oscillating with no input attached, making it a useful soundtrack generator for the end of the world.

Notes: ADDAC710 is a dual channel Isolated DI box and is all about keeping the sound coming from your Modular free from any undesired noisy interferences, making sure that what you're getting from your outputs is what your Modular is actually producing. It provides galvanic electrical isolation between the Modular system and external sources preventing impedance mismatch and ground loop induced hum. ADDAC's 710 circuit is designed around a unity 1:1 type Low-cost Audio Transformer operating in the 20 Hz to 20 KHz range, this impedance matching transformer provides two fully balanced outputs (via XLR connectors). ADDAC710 is a low-cost alternative to the ADDAC800X High-End Outputs module, we redesigned the original circuit using a smaller low-cost transformer that also reduced its depth allowing it to fit shallow Eurorack cases.

There are two independent channels on the module with:

The LIFT/FLOAT/GND 3-way switch lets you choose between lift, ground or floating ground.
In the LIFT position (left) the module circuit will be "lifted" to ground through a 100R resistor and a 10nF capacitor.
In the FLOAT position (middle) Ground will not be shared leaving ins and outs grounds completely apart from each other fully isolating both signals. in the GND position (right) Ground will be shared between inputs and outputs, here no isolation is used.
Any of these three positions may be the best form of avoiding ground loops or any other undesired interference occurring between your modular and the sound system you're plugging it into. Try out which one of these options will work best in any given situation.

The importance of using Audio Transformers
Applying a transformer balanced output isolation has lots of advantages over other less expensive ways for dealing with ground loop issues. This method provides the chance to set a very simple and clean circuit in which the signal transfer process develops smoothly and humming free. The transformer is a device that performs both signal balancing and high-to-low (or vice-versa) impedance conversion, while rejecting straggled DC voltage and Radio Frequency Interference from signal passing through a magnetic bridge. In a transformer, two (or more) coils (called windings) of insulated wire wound around a magnetic metal core allow for its input(s) and output(s) not to be physically connected together. When an AC signal passes through the input winding (the primary), a perfectly related AC signal appears on the output winding (the secondary). This way, by the fact that signal flows via inductive coupling between the two windings of the transformer, this module presents a most accurate electrical isolation between its input and output. A same number of windings on each coil guarantees that there's no gain loss when audio signal passes from the primary to the secondary windings. Furthermore, since these two windings are insulated from each other, the transformer will electrically isolate ADDAC710 from any other device, preventing hum problems coming from an outsider ground. Being a low-cost transformer the frequency response curve is not as linear as our 800X, still the -0.2dB attenuation at 50Hz feels negligible.

In any case having Phantom Power ON won't influence the module operation.
