  2. Yu Me Us (4:35)
Review: Samba's 26. RAIN label returns for the new year with this deliciously different couplet from Brizzle's Rygby. "Pasqualina" is total whimsy. All uplifting, animated harmonics, this genuinely sounds like nothing else around and sounds so refreshing for it. The same can be said for "Yu Me Us". Imagine a 2020 take on the purple funk sounds; there's some deep under-the-sea enchantment going on with high levels of funk and weirdness. This is a genuinely exceptional and forward-thinking 140 record, Rygby raises the levels again.

  1. Baby (4:05)
  2. Tonight (3:53)
Review: If you're stuck for a Valentine's day gift for the vinyl lover in your life, you might want to take a look at this limited, heart-shaped pressing of Donnie and Joe Emerson's cult 1979 cut "Baby", which has successfully been covered in recent years by Dean Blunt and Inga Copeland, and more surprisingly Ariel Pink and Damn Funk. Here it resides on the A-side, where the lovelorn brothers cut a heavy-hearted path through lo-fi blue-eyed soul pastures. B-side "Tonight" is a previously unreleased gem recorded during the same period. It, too, is emotion-rich and lo-fi in construction, with the pair adding their sublime vocals to a backing track rich in steel guitar solos, chunky bass and flanged guitar chords.

Techno
  1. A City At Night (6:12)
  2. The Dream (extended edit) (4:46)
Review: For the latest missive on their fast-rising DET313 label, Gary Martin and Yossi Amoyal have dug deep into the archives of Martin's long-running Teknotika Records imprint. First up on the A-side is a re-mastered version of "A City At Night", a Martin cut from 1990 that mixes the futurist intent of Motor City techno with chunkier, UK style techno grooves and the kind of stabs and musical flourishes more associated with Robert Hood or Terrence Parker records. Side B boasts a freshly extended edit of another Martin gem - this time under the Gigi Galaxy alias - from 1994. "The Dream" more than lives up to its title, with Martin wrapping restless bass, starry lead lines, alien electronics and sumptuous chords around a hypnotic deep techno groove.

Review: Ekkohaus is no stranger to the house scene!! You can hear his intelligent, funktifying rhythms and grooves on imprints like Morris Audio, 2020 Vision, Circus Company, Flumo, Eklo, Mule Electronique, Brut, Moon Harbour, Holic Trax, Claap, Gruuv, Hudd Traxx, Diaphan Music and now MixxRecords!! We welcome the Greek native with open arms...

This special 10" purple colored vinyl is most appropriate as for the entitled "A" side is called "Purple Divine" and divine it is!! Playful percussion and drum-work along with a simplistic, melodic bass groove keeps you in hypnosis just longing for more!

You'll find a more jacked-up and jazzed up pump on the "B" side with "Ordinary People". DEFINITELY a house banger!!

Deep House
  1. Generic House Traxx (6:03)
  2. Please Him (7:01)
Review: Italian artist Paul Santangelo has been having fun messing with the sometimes po-faced traditions of the house music scene through a raft of home made productions on SoundCloud, but now with his Venetian Causeway label he's able to prove the clout to be found in his music. On this 10" the arch title "Generic House Traxx" actually does a disservice to the quality of the music contained within - Santangelo does a fine job of whipping up monosynth bass and ethereal pads astride an uptempo beat that, while familiar, has an atmosphere with considerable depth to it. "Please Him" on the B side goes further out on a mellow electro tip, plaintive leads and aqueous chords flirting with 808-style beats.

  1. Summer Jam (8:24)
  2. Salavere (6:58)
Review: Sometime Jahtari and Sex Tags sort Tapes (real name Jackson Bailey) is on fine form on this tidy ten-inch for Japanese imprint EM Records. "Summer Jam" more than lives up to its title, with the on-point producer peppering a rich, analogue-heavy electronic rhythm track with lo-fi sounding synthesizer flute solos and cheery, sun-kissed melodies. His digi-dub roots come further to the fore on undulating, delay-laden flipside "Salavere", where echoing electronic melodies seemingly drift above a sparse, clicking drum machine rhythm track. It too is rather fine, albeit in a deeper, woozier and altogether more spaced-out way. In a word: ace.

Review: Gary Martin is well known for his unique productions and his label Teknotika is surely a classic coming out of the famous motor city. This special 10" holds two sought after tracks that were found on a lost DAT tape by Yossi Amoyal and Gary Martin himself. On the A side we have a long time secret weapon, it's a hypnotic groove that was heard on many classic sets, Zip and Ben Klock to name a few. An extremely insane, hard to find Gigi Galaxy track that was changing hands for silly prices is on the B side, for those who know... massive release!

Review: Leading modern dub label Indica Dubs ease into 2020 with more of their silky smooth and swaggering cuts. This latest 10" kicks off with Danman's "Jah Love Is True" with its lazy drums and ricocheting hits, then in house team Indica Dubs & Conscious Sounds link up for a dub before then offering "Spirit Of HIM", with big warrior leads and pillow drums and bass ready to sink right into. A further dub of this one finds them get busy on the studio dials and take you on a more heady trip.

Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Space-Disco
  2. Space-Disco (1978 original)
Review: a white Mellotron M 400." So starts Klaus Hoffmann of his 40 years love affair with the Mellotron. Moving from Prog-Rock guitarist to Cosmic Disco warrior in a space of a few years, the birth of Cosmic Hoffmann would lead to a number of classic Kosmiche albums through-out the 1980s. Before this though came Space-Disco. Initially recorded in 1978 after endless late night sessions exploring the new realms of this free form electronic music, the first incarnation was recorded live to tape for a failed film project. An uplifting spaced-out synth journey, it was the later reworked version that would go on to become the lost cult classic. With added disco syncopation taking the track into interstellar spheres, it appeared only as a flipside of Cosmic Hoffmann's first and last single, "Weltraumboogie", in 1982. Unfortunately the release did not make much impression at the time but has become highly sought-after for the more leftfield DJ and music lovers in the years since. Now fully licensed and remastered, the inclusion of the unreleased 1978 Original will be only add to the collectors dream.

  3. Ventos Do Outono (Kirk Degiorgio remix)
Review: Bruno E has plenty of history in the field of future jazz and downtempo, and now he's been snapped up by D3 to deliver some of that cold-chilling lounge business with some interesting remixers on board. Pat Van Dyke is up first, creating a blissful version of "Ventos De Outono" that feels as cosy as a warm fire and a glass of whisky on an autumn evening. The original version of the track is actually a peppier affair with a broken beat lilt that wouldn't sound out of place alongside the Dego and Kaidi Tatham crew. Kirk Degiorgio is a natural fit for another remix given his jazzy roots, and his swirling techno treatment is the perfection lotion to pour over Bruno E's excellent original ingredients.

"Points In Time" follows the hair-raising brute-force damage he's caused recently on Metalheadz and 31; punished steppy beats, deadline-style tones on the riff and a bassline that will eat you alive. "Wake Dub" on the B flips the vibe to Amit's classic dubwise halftime roots with hypnotic melodica blasts and tidal cymbal splashes. Savagely on-point as always.

Named after his radio show at the time, it is a trippy, repetitive and at times contorted effort that works its magic via a simple/less is more approach. This is backed by a more upbeat and dancefloor ready take on the B side by fellow Hyperdub alumnus Ikonika (Hum + Buzz) who does a stellar job on the edit front - choice!

"Embera" sees the Colombian artist venturing down a ghostly trail previously unexplored. Enter the void on the tunnelling freefall session of the title track, trance out to the strobe-lit hypnotherapy of "Saija" before the mental overdrive of closer "Awa" takes you further down the spiral with its intoxicating and droning motions. Review: Firecracker offshoot Unthank's 13th immaculately presented clear vinyl 10-inch comes courtesy of Benoit B, a producer whose suitably cosmic and otherworldly electronic outings have previously been showcased by Wisdom Teeth, Berceuse Heroique and Versatile (amongst others). He's in fine form throughout, mixing skewed, lo-fi drum machine rhythms with fuzzy, retro-futurist synths and a big dollop of intergalactic attitude. We're particularly enjoying the strangely swung wonkiness of opener "Global Go" and the leftfield sci-fu funk of closing cut "Coconut Grove", but the two tracks in between are equally as potent. In other words, this is another deliciously quirky and entertaining ten-inch from Unthank.

Review: Back in 2016, legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen approached techno pioneer Jeff Mills with the idea of working together. A series of live gigs and off-the-radar studio sessions followed, with the first fruits of their joint efforts finally appearing on this must-have 10". As you'd expect, the duo's collaborative work combines Allen's traditional Nigerian polyrhythms, traditional Afrobeat instrumentation, and the far-sighted, sci-fi inspired electronic futurism that has always marked out Mills' work. The result is a quartet of cuts that could arguably be described as retro-futurist Afro-tech - all delay-laden beats, basslines and organs subtly sparring with gentle acid lines, Motor City electronics, beguiling deep space textures and shimmering, 31st century motifs. It's arguably Allen's stylistic contributions that dominate, but that's no bad thing.

Deep House
  1. Pressure Box
  2. Azikiwe
Review: A second release of the year for the emergent Common Dreams label sees Reedale Rise producer Simon Keat join the fold with a pair of thoughtful, pensive deep house cuts. Lead track "Pressure Box" is the track with a sense of unpredictable funk, giving us juicy chords, starry-eyed pads and an overall nice atmosphere with the drums moving ever forward. The B-side "Azikiwe" fuses sporadic arpeggiations with some very thoughtful chord melodies. Maybe it could be described as having a more psychedelic twist. Another fine house record from the Common Dreams team.

  2. Augustus Pablo - "Park Lane Special" (2:50)
  3. Rockers All Stars - "Levi Dub" (2:42)
  4. Augustus Pablo/Rockers All Stars - "Africa 1983" (3:04)
  5. Augustus Pablo/Rockers All Stars - "Africa Dub" (2:52)
Review: This choice various artists 10" brings together three of reggae's most iconic names - Hugh Mundell, Augustus Pablo and Rockers All Stars. Mundell's impassioned cries on "Africa Must Be Free" resonate as loudly now as they did back then, while "Park Lane Special" from Pablo is a swaggering gem full of multi-layered synths and icy, snaking hi hats. Rockers All Stars appear on three cuts of meandering dub, and each one is laced with fine chord work and a real sense of optimism.

  4. Brandon Bay - Farewell (Shoreline remix)
Review: Swedish travelling minstrel, Rickard Jäverling, returns to lavish upon us further moments of heartfelt, folk-inspired beauty. Spinning Scandinavian wordless folk-songs seems like second nature for Jäverling, and these tracks show quite perfectly his unique skills. Beginning with 'Three Sisters' (which also featured on his recent 'Two Times Five Lullaby' album) we're off to an explosive start; a 21st century hoedown with eyes fixed on frozen Northern European fields rather than rickety Pennsylvanian barns. With banjo, drums and guitar, Jäverling and his band manage to distil a Tortoise-inspired post-rock intelligence and blend it with the traditional folk sounds that seem to have made their way into the mainstream once more. Side A is rounded off with the shimmering and beautiful 'Västbacken', a hazy instrumental piece of folk poetry bringing to mind bubbling streams and the beauty of a childish midsummer adventure. The EP's defining moment however comes on the flipside with the 7 minute epic 'Sultan'. It's hard to imagine a track more life affirming than this, which takes the Chicago post-rock formula and re-contextualises it for 2006, giving us something both reflective and quietly jubilant. Finishing off the disc are fellow Yesternow artists, Shoreline, who have ushered Jäverling into their ever-growing family and contributed a 'remix' which takes the original track and injects it with a sense of fun and playful abandon. 'The Three Sisters EP' adds yet further weight to the growing Yesternow catalogue, and is more proof of the subtle and measured talents of Rickard Jäverling.
