Review: Marc Leclair may have become best known for his Akufen work in the 00s, but his Horror Inc work is surely some of his finest. Taking the slinky micro house he pioneered and turning it to more cinematic purposes, his last album under the name was 2013's incredible Briefly Eternal on Perlon. Now he revives the project with this expansive suite for Ohm Hourani's Anoma label, which is appropriately tipped towards jazzy subtleties within machine music. With each release, Horror Inc becomes a deeper, subtler concern, and so it goes on this record where the springy, swung patterns are offset by half-hidden melodic murmurs and a generous dose of mystery as Leclair takes his conceptual project further into the realms of playfully spooky micro jazz.

Review: Rebolledo's brilliant 2016 album Mondo Alterado gets the remix treatment, with an impressive selection of production talents taking it in turns to tweak the Mexican's work. There's much to admire throughout, with highlights including a thrusting, low-slung and trippy revision by Maceo Plex, a deliciously woozy and loved-up interpretation from Superpitcher (think Balearic-meets-post-punk-meets-Teutonic tech-house), a thrillingly percussive take on "Pow Wow Wow" by occasional Optimo Music sorts The Fantastic Twins, and a pair of next-level rubs from Mike Simonetti, whose acid-flecked "Discotico Simonettico En Panico" version could well be the best of the bunch. Throw in a smattering of typically heavy and eccentric Rebolledo originals, and you have an essential, floor-friendly selection.

Review: The annual Cocoon compilation is a perfect snapshot of what's going on in the more popular corners of the European techno scene. Curated by label head and Ibiza party king Sven Vath, this year's edition is a comparatively deep and melodic affair. A big shout goes to Talaboman for their excellently entitled "Big Room Anthemic Groovy Pounding Trance Dub Bomb Superb!" which is indeed a big room anthemic groovy pounding trance dub bomb, while Edward serves up a more twisted roller (the excellent "End Days"), Raxon goes deep with "The Turbulent" and Mark Broom hammers home with tripped out sci-fi banger "Jaded", amongst many other gems.

Review: Sushitech's second chapter of their Tessera compilations has been in the making for over two years. It's not hard to understand why, however. This monstrous 5 disc release is riddled with techno killers of the highest calibre, from start to finish. We knew that these guys were reliable purveyors of fine electronic dance music, but this is a truly impressive showcase, and surely up there with the likes of Ostgut Ton. In fact, this compilation goes even beyond the immediate techno remit. It's difficult to pick out the highlights here; everything is solid, and even the opening dub echoes of "Prelude" is enough to get us salivating. There's a rare appearance on the dubbed-out deep house of "Skank" featuring Rhauder, Steve O'Sullivan makes a sleek appearance, Delano Smith offers two magnetic pieces of Detroit magic, XDB's "Frost" is nothing short of spectacular, and even Efdemin's glitchy, minimalist deep house seems more poignant than usual. Review: Last year, East End Dubs ended his Social series after releasing 10 sought-after EPs in just under three years. "Social Part 2" is the second boxed retrospective of this work; while the first edition gathered together EPs one to five, this sequel boasts numbers six to ten. The 15 included tracks are all up to the prolific producer's high standards, offering an attractive late night blend of swinging tech-house rhythms, rich bass, spacey pads, intergalactic melodies and atmospheric aural textures. There's little filler or fluff, just quality peak-time grooves, occasional warm-up workouts and a sprinkling of loved-up anthems-in-waiting (see the delicious "Track 6" and glassy-eyed "Track 8").

Review: For the 42nd stop on the decades-long journey through worldwide DJ culture, Global Underground has pitched up in Berlin and handed over the reins to Patrice Baumel, a Dutch DJ/producer with an impressive track record. The resultant two-disc mix-up is staggeringly good, with Baumel choosing to represent a wide variety of techno and tech-house sounds with occasional diversions into more melodious or off-kilter fare. Wisely, the Dutchman has also chosen to offer up tracks that span the decades, contrasting classic material from the likes of Swayzak, Matthew Dear and Chateau Flight (whose brilliant "Cosmic Race" stands out) with newer cuts from such artists as Shlomo, Steve Moore, Adam Port, Ripperton and the ageless Phil Kieran.

Review: If you are part of the demographic of Art Department fans who like their tote bags to be leather then this ltd edition of the Canadian tech house duo's second LP is for you! When announcing the release of Natural Selection, Johnny White and Kenny Glasgow promised a more "mature and experimental sound". Certainly, the album is a more wide-ranging and atmospheric album than their club-friendly debut, The Drawing Board. While there are forays into dancefloor-centric material - see Seth Troxler hook-up "Cruel Intentions" and the analogue techno pulse of the delay-laden "Hunt" - for the most part the duo sticks to a slower tempo, drawing influence from IDM, new wave (see "Crazy"), maudlin trip-hop, ambient and downbeat pop. As a result, Natural Selection is a surprisingly varied and inventive full-length.

Review: Sven Vath's label belatedly celebrates the landmark of passing the hundred release mark with this triple vinyl box set. Given the scale - 3LP complemented by expanded 2CD - and those involved it's no surprise that the Cocoon 100 Box Set took that bit longer coming together and those of a techno and minimal persuasion will undoubtedly salivate at this tracklisting. Everyone from Ricky Villalobos to Lawrence and Nick Curly via Loco Dice and Extrawelt contribute previously unreleased productions and the mood is as diverse as you'd expect from this list. "Arild" finds Villalobos in typically restrained mood, whilst Dial boss Lawrence conjures up a hypnotic production in "Serpentine" that has a touch of the STLs about it. Deep acid, rowdy drum tracks, abstract and psychedelic productions follow (Secret Cinema's "Supertek" is a notable example) and that's just on the vinyl. Sven mate you're spoiling us.

Review: Despite Traum Schallplatten only establishing the Telrae sub label in 2010, the dub techno operation has been in remarkably prolific form, dropping some fifteen EPs from the likes of Salz, Martin Schulte, Reimut Van Bonn and Sven Weisseman. They close proceedings on 2012 in the best way possible with the rather dashing Archive Box Set, an 11 x 10" coloured vinyl package brandishing some 22 tracks. Most of the aforementioned artists contribute, as do Stefan Gubatz, Tobias Horberg and Deepchild for a Telrae showcase that will appeal equally to the dub techno completists and limited edition vinyl lovers.

Review: It's fair to say that few other labels would retain such a degree of consistency and adventure over the duration of a compilation series as Cocoon have done with their alphabetized collections. Arriving at the letter N, Sven Vath's label once again draws together tracks from artists close to Cocoon as well as some less associated across six slabs of vinyl. If you graced Ibiza over the summer season you may well have heard papa Vath dropping some of the tracks contained within at Cocoon's residency at Amnesia. In terms of tracklisting, it's a typically diverse affair with the various shades of techno from Lucy, Ricardo Tobar and Truncate complemented by the presence of Aril Brikha, Markus Fix, Ripperton and more.

This breaks-inflected, glossy, and high-octane release is emblematic of what we might call experimental EDM, all of which is chart-worthy yet not overblown. Glowal's 'Encore' opens the compilation, Bicep-style, in which we hear rave-trance stabs complemented by military snare rolls in the pre-drop, before a triumphant breakbeat sets in thereafter. It gets weirder and weirder from there, as 'Olden Daze' opts for all kinds of experimental tomfoolery, and 'Ara' works jackin' house vocal science into a beat more fitting for '70s industrial music than the '20s charts. This is an eclectic yet euphoric dance compilation from the masterminds Dixon and Ame.
