Leaving Berlin (Lawrence remix)
It's What We Do (Kink & Neville Watson rework)
It's What We Do
Review: When an artist releases an album that immediately gains the respect of critics and fans alike, often their label will look to capitalise on the success with a quick remix package, pulled together to exploit the hype that surrounds the release. However, Donnacha Costello’s LP from March, Before We Say Goodbye, was not just a great album. It was genre re-shaping one, taking techno into a beautiful, emotive and diverse place where it rarely finds itself. Poker Flat, recognising this outstanding achievement, set out to deliver a remix EP that lives up to the original album and the emotions that it stands for. By drafting in Lawrence and production duo KiNK & Neville Watson, they have resoundingly accomplished the task.

Dial's Lawrence, who like Costello poses a real musicianship in the true sense of the word, manages to glean out yet more emotive depth from the Irishman’s pristine "Leaving Berlin" with smothering strings and a glowing wash of synths. We find the German in a sultry mood as he combines a rich, dubby atmosphere with beautiful melodic structures. As the track evolves, dense strings and softly pumping percussion begin to wrap themselves around the memorable hook of the original. Rush Hour duo, KiNK & Neville Watson turn in a classic acid rework of "It’s What We Do." Jacking all the way with a cruising bassline and tough drum machines, the duo bring a distinct Chi-town feel to the track but merge it with modern and skilful studio know-how.

The Composer (Sasse remix)
Review: Berlin based Martin Landsky is by no means a prolific producer, restricting his output to one or two EPs a year, but his undeniable consistency ensures you best check them when they do drop! He returns to regular haunt Poker Flat for the first time since appearing alongside label boss Steve Bug almost a year ago with the decidedly effective tech house workout The Composer. It may begin in unassuming fashion - little more than a tight groove twisting around those slick rhythms - but there's a flawless quality to the way it gradually builds via low reaching bass and Teutonic titular refrains before bursting into all engulfing flourishes of synth. Moodmusic boss Sasse pops up with a remix on the flip that naturally swerves the production into deeper territory and does a splendid job of teasing out the acidic qualities as the track inevitably builds towards its climactic release and epic breakdown.

Review: Poker Flat supremo Steve Bug returns with a ninth (count 'em) round up of releases, exclusives and forgotten favourites from the veteran German imprint. While the second CD mix from Bug himself is arguably a better snapshot of where Poker Flat is right now, it's the first CD of unmixed tracks that will be of most interest to DJs. Highlights are plentiful, from the unadulterated classic house sweetness of newcomers Tom Taylor and Gareth Whitehead, to the chunky vibes of Adultnapper, piano-laden spookiness of Roland Appel and the moody slickness of veteran Bristolian producer Nick Harris. Bug also finds time to squeeze in some melancholic deepness from Sebastian San.

Review: Amazingly, it's been 15 years since Steve Bug delivered his debut album proper, the minimal techno/deep house fusion set Volksworld. He's changed a lot as a producer since then, broadening his palette and trundling off in different directions. Noir, his fifth full-length, is arguably his cheeriest and well rounded set to date. While there are atmospheric, basement-bothering techno/house fusions (see "Tell Me Why", "These Grooves" and "Somewhere In The Night"), the album's high points are all interesting diversions. There's the melancholic, downtempo electronica of "Farewell Friend", the shuffling piano jazz of "The Seventh Victim" and the woozy, guitar-laden post-punk influences of "Poison of Choice".

Review: Since first surfacing way back in 2007, Dutch producer TJ Kong has proved adept at making the sort of comfy, melodic, heavily electronic dance music that defies easy categorization. On this debut album - produced with pal Modular A - he's up to his old tricks again. Dream Cargoes is full of music that slips down the cracks between genres; deep house with smacked-out trance synths, touchy-feely techno with old prog house influences, even slo-mo electronica with sweeping, cinematic melodies. Then there's "Studio 5, The Stars", which sounds like a jolly Dutch take on the Bradock classic "Deep Burnt". However you describe it, Dream Cargoes is an enjoyable set -and that, after all, is the only thing that matters.

Leaving Berlin
No-One Is Watching
Roll It Out
Stretching Time
Review: Only his third LP in an established career that spans nearly a decade and a half, Before We Say Goodbye is Irishman Donnacha Costello’s latest album that deals with the topic of techno in his own unique and beautiful way. Released on Steve Bug’s Berlin based label Poker Flat, the album proves that techno music can harbour the skill, emotion and diversity that is so often missing within it.
Much like his 2001 masterpiece Together Is the New Alone, this LP taps into an ambient texture, but builds it with techno rhythms and pulsations. By keeping his club sentiment at bay, Costello delivers a subtle album that flows with the kind of natural current that is often lost within techno productions.
Weaving in and out of styles, up and down tempo ranges, the LP is expertly crafted to take you on a journey that ebbs and flows with purpose. From the deep and melancholic but groovy slow burners such as "Leaving Berlin" and "A Warm Embrace" that set the LP off, Costello moves into an old school mood on "It’s What We Do" before hitting his stride with the more up tempo offerings of "No-One Is Watching" and the onomatopoeic "Roll It Out." On the second half of the album he winds things down with tracks like "With Me Still," "Stretching Time," the mournfully melodic "The Tug" and the beautiful "Last Train Home" which finishes the LP off in aptly reflective mood. Such is the musicality of Before We Say Goodbye that it feels like an album crafted outside of techno and underground dance, but at the same time using the sounds and the flavours of the genre to redefine the way we view ambient techno in the UK.

Monkey Shoulder
Review: Steve Bug may be influenced by the sounds of classic house, but on this EP the Poker Flat owner shows that he and Cle have their own vision. Therefore, while the title tack revolves around a predatory bass, a succession of techy stabs pushes it into a breakdown, while the icy chords have an unquestionable spine-tingling effect. Similarly on "Monkey Shoulder", the duo borrow the driving, crashing snare drums from Chicago and the evocative pads sound like pre-disco Morgan Geist. Ironically, although it forgoes using Chicago's jacking past, "Shadows" is most in keeping with the city's past. In particular, the prowling bass and almost dainty, delicate melodies are reminiscent of classic Larry Heard.

Monitor One
Review: After recently releasing a teaser EP for Werkschau, the full album is finally here and ready to roll. German producer and Dj Landsky has been through many different styles in his time, but today he's a firm favourite on the Poker Flat label, and this album acts as a compilation of all his best work so far.

Probably his most well-known tune, 1000 Miles, gets an overhaul, appearing here as 2000 Miles. It becomes a more pacey affair with more punch in the bottom end, and more squelchy synths on top, altogether bigger than the original. Elsewhere his mix of Detroit Grand Pubah's Surrender is a real winner, layering the laconic spoken-word acapella over some deep and beautiful minimal grooves. There's more funky action on his mix of SoopaFi's Talkin' Large, as well as some fresh percussion on the dubiously titled Mission Upskirt. But mostly though, Lansky lays on superior deep techno by the pound on Werkschau. FM Safari is a hypnotic and brain-melting delight, while Monitor One is a shape-shifting essential which could work in any number of dj sets.

Well worth getting up to date with Martin Lansky's work so far.

Always Something Better (Trentemoller remix)
Always Something Better (feat Richard Davis - vocal version)
Always Something Better (Trentemoller dub remix)
Always Something Better (Herbert's Bubble remix)
Review: Anders Trentemøller, the shooting star of 2005, needs no further introduction. He has been stringing together hit after hit, most recently the "Nam Nam EP" on Poker Flat which offered an initial insight into his upcoming album "The Last Resort". Now the new 12" brings the first full-blown single. The featured album track is "Always Something Better" - a vocal version featuring Richard Davis - and has a calmer, almost dreamy mood compared to the club tracks he’s released. An easy-going groove, some wonderful Celesta chords (hand-played by Anders) and the typical Trentemøller sound melt with the outstanding vocals by Richard Davis, who already graced Swayzak‘s "Speak Easy" on K7. Furthermore, Davis is known for his long players on Punkt Musik and Kitty-Yo as well as an array of singles and remixes. A brilliant track with a beautiful atmosphere. Of course the A1 slot is reserved for the "Trentemøller remix", a true dancefloor anthem. A kicking bass drum, quirky sounds and the "Trentemøller twist" make this a real summer hit. While the A1 mix is a reduced vocal version, you‘ll find the "dub mix" on B1. To top things off, the one and only Matthew Herbert contributes his very own interpretation on the "Bubble mix". He disrupts and rearranges the original sounds and song structures to create a new unsettled, but fascinating soundscape. Big one.
