EEE 009
EEE 009 (hand-stamped 1-sided heavyweight vinyl 12")
EEE
Cat: EEE 009. Rel: 13 Oct 20
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Track 1 (7:18)
Review: The EEE series may utilise a very simple blueprint - each single-sided, one-track release combines tasty, 21st century tech-house grooves with vocal lifts and instrumental samples from a classic cut - but so far, the publicity-shy producer behind it has yet to put a foot wrong. This ninth instalment in the ongoing series is every bit as alluring as its predecessors, in part because the headline-grabbing Nina Simone vocal samples are used sparingly and dropped into the mix for maximum impact. They mainly appear within the melodious, smile-inducing breakdown, before making way for a return to the track's chunky, seemingly squeezable tech-house groove and sweet, glassy-eyed lead lines. On paper it shouldn't work, but it really does, making this another must-check EEE release.

  4. Chris Stussy & Litmus - "Kaizen" (6:45)
Review: Minimal groovemaker Chris Stussy and his most regular home label PIV label are inspired by the 90s-era US house sound. Think warmth, soul, and fluid grooves that come with deft samples that speak to the heart. All of those things characterise his latest outing on PIV across four killer cuts. 'Across Ocean' is a breezy, easy to love and timeless slice of house before 'Seeing & Believing' goes deeper, with a vulnerable vocal and neat chords that bring the feels. There is a more biting tech house edge to 'Independent Woman' and lastly Stussy links with Litmus for 'Kaizen,' with its lush synthscapes and cool electronic sound.

  3. Vlad Arapasu - "Egoland" (7:42)
  4. Wickham - "Mello" (7:01)
Review: East End Dubs' Eastenderz label keeps on turning out hugely functional but also charming dub tech that is stripped back to its bones and laced with funk. This new various artist EP packs a powerful punch from the off, with Floog laying down some vital kicks and whirring machine sounds to send any floor into overdrive. Cosmjn then takes us to another planet with his dreamy pads and Vlad Arapasu's 'Egoland' sounds like a classic Terry Francis cut from the mid-90s, so in other words, pure fire. There's no mucking around on 'Mello', a razor sharp closer with hi hats that would cut though steel.

  4. The Introducer (8:10)
Review: Although rarely spoken about in hushed tones, Peter Adshead AKA Baby Ford is one of British house and techno's true pioneers. As many readers will know, he spent the first decade of his career exploring acid house and rave, before switching to a deeper and more minimalistic techno and tech-house sound towards the end of the '90s. It's in that period that BFORD14, which is finally being reissued, first appeared in stores. Intoxicating, bass-heavy and entrancing, the EP's many highlights include the hissing hypnotism of 'Serpentine Tale', the deep bass, melancholic synthesiser chords and crunchy drums of 'Night D3 Died', and the spacey, deep techno warmth of deliciously hazy closing cut 'The Introducer'.

Deep House
  1. Sequential Circus
  2. Just On For The Ride
  3. Charlie Don't Surf
  4. Hotshot
Review: REPRESS ALERT: 'Something From Nothing' is a four tracker that fuses techno sensibility with house swagger, a voice calling to Detroit's Second Wave while a hand beckons the shadowy waters of house.
Hearts Of Darkness are immersed in late nights and smoke-filled basements, with past form seeing them play Fabric and Bugged Out!. An unhealthy loyalty to vintage hardware and long forgotten code means their music is analogue, not for fashion, but because it feels right.
On the A, 'Sequential Circus' is purest machine funk as a driving bass bubbles into self-oscillation. Next, 'Just On For The Ride' bounces to a millennial deep house swing. Flip it for a dense future dub workout in 'Charlie Don't Surf,' then 'Hotshot' closes with a pad soaked vibe for the discerning warm up. A melting pot EP with all the right ingredients.
'Something From Nothing' opens the door to Hearts Of Darkness. Step inside.

  4. Funny Dub Ya Know (6:15)
Review: Italian duo Rufus and Mass_prod are back once again as Nightdrivers, shoring up to Holic Trax with more of their infectious club-ready material. Beyond the functionality of their drums, where the Nightdrivers excel is in their choice of samples and textures to add a psychoactive twist to their craft. "A Funny Thang" is a delightfully unhinged workout, while "Stressedout" does a fine job of digging into a heads down, RnB inflected groove. "Rising" switches things up with a broken beat groove that loads up sunkissed soul samples to great effect, and then the record rounds out with a dub mix of "A Funny Thang".

Review: Eyetone's second release features three club tracks fully equipped and tailor-made for today's dancefloor by one of the most talented yet elusive producers of the house scene.
Leon Roberts' music has always maintained a timeless sound and done all his talking. Eyetone were fortunate to track down one of the true vanguards of the scene and dust off the DATS from his studio for a timely reminder on how the past has helped shape the current and future to come.
Originally conceived over ten years ago and full of groove and soul that pours out from his machines, all three club tracks speak firmly for themselves and will find a home in your record box for years to come.
This is no nostalgic release but an ode to the old school with a release that is relevant and more significant than ever in today's ever expanding scene.
It's a pure delight to welcome one of the most respected producers of the house scene to a new audience now ready and thirstier than ever to discover more about house music's glorious past.

Review: Fresh from fine outings on Port Neuf and Carpets & Snares, Fabian Appolaire dons the Saudade moniker once more for a first outing on Negonthropy's new sister imprint, Thisisnegonthropy.com (try saying that after a few too many light ales). There's much to admire across the EP's four formidable tracks, from the off-kilter Afro-Latin polyrhythms, tight stabs, wonky vocal snippets and deep bass of title track 'Choices', to the undulating tech-house glitch-funk of 'Implications' and the deep, sub-heavy early morning hypnotism of 'Liquid Fluid'. Arguably best of all though is A2 cut 'Con Amore, Como Diz', a fine fusion of densely layered Brazilian drums, fluttering and spacey synthesizer riffs, and jumpy, body-popping tech-house electronics.

Review: Burnski and Michael James ignited their Relic collaboration last year with a classy drop on oge, and they're back again on Constant Black with some devastatingly bumping minimal tech house. There's a hi-tech finish to this whole EP, from the moody lead cut "D" to the slippery, funkified "E". The mix is clean as a whistle and maximized for every little production wriggle and shapely bassline to cut through on any system, even in the hazier clouds of pad hovering over "F". Don't skip over the B2 though - as with all the best EPs there's gold to be savoured in the crafty machine shuffle and rubbery b-line of "G".

  1. Overcome (9:08)
  2. Lady Science (NYC Sunrise) (9:24)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: relik returns with a repackaged edition of one of the catalogue's most treasured releases. "Overcome" and "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)" need little introduction, and now come sporting the new TR11:11 matrix number. Written and produced by Thomas Melchior and Baby Ford aka Soul Capsule, these tracks came from one of the many sessions recorded at the West London Ifach Studio in 1999. On the A Side "Overcome" is stripped back and energetic, driven by rolling and shuffling garage style beats, tight bubbling bass and atmospheric synth pads. The intermittent vocal samples and the release's signature organ set you up for the flip, "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)". Possibly one of house music's most emotive pieces, the track builds slowly with the introduction of each part building a story of soulful optimism based around a sparse palette of deep synths, uplifting keys and warm analogue bass. The understated beauty of the main vocal riff never seems to grow old or tired with the track lending itself perfectly to either main room, peak-time play or after-hours sessions alike. Remastered by Rashad at D & M.

It is alleged that he has been involved in money laundering and dark web activities and has been arrested by German authorities who are trying to extradite him to the United States to face trial. He maintains his innocence, and this label has been set up to raise funds in order to try and help him. Musically, it's deft and detailed tech with hooky drum loops and wonky synth sounds designed to be heard on hi class sound systems. The A-side track is the first to use is own voice, and the flip was written just before his arrest.

Review: The mystery of the Botanic Minds Sunset Series continues to unfold with another bout of surreal and sensual club tracks that balance tweaked minimalism with a warm and hazy atmosphere. "Track001A" is packed with intricate rhythmic interplay, but it's the fluttering guitar licks and displaced vocals that give the piece its unique vibe. "Track002A" is a remix credited to Eastenderz regular Lizz, and it's a particularly spellbinding jam shaped out with lingering chords and a wistful mood. "Track001B" hunkers down around a low, throbbing bassline, but there's some sweet keys hovering up top to keep things from getting too dark. Barut is on hand with a remix for "Track002B", where trancey undercurrents meet with expansive piano and ethereal ambient swells, all strapped to a sturdy minimal house groove.

Review: Longtime main room techno cohorts Extrawelt have sure been around a bit, and later in October will release their latest album Extra Welt Hits on Cocoon. But before that the German pair land on Traum with three more of their muscular and robust analogue workouts. 'Mr Wednesday' is a real teeth clenching ride with a taught baseline snaking beneath slapping hits. 'Little We Know' lightened the mood with airy flute sounds and a more rubbery and warm bassline that does some fine acrobatics. Last of all, 'SEM' gets back to paranoid and dark dystopian techno territory and will keep dancers rooted to the spot.

Review: After previously treating us to some Underwater Tales and a trip to the Dream Factory, KSKY returns to 10010 Records to celebrate a New Era of Tenderness. In practice, that means serving up a quartet of emotive and melodious tracks that explore the deeper and more tactile end of the electro spectrum. He begins by wrapping fluttering, mind-soothing synthesizer motifs around a bubbly electronic bassline and crunchy machine drums on 'New Era of Tenderness', before adding new age ambient style chords and jaunty lead lines to an even deeper electro beat on 'Dreamy 5D'. '808 Waterfall' is a pin-sharp and positive number rich in yearning chords and starry melodies, while 'Hermerc' sees the producer successfully employ rugged acid lines, punchy drums and gaseous pads.

He might not be at the peak of his powers but still has a wealth of skills and experience that mean his every release is always well worth checking. Here popping up on Germany label Basic he offers up the brooding atmospheres and floating pads of 'Nature Reverance' atop a rugged and raw drum line. Review: Malin Genie's purple patch continues to yield more delights with this latest drop on his self-titled label. This time around the prolific Dutch artist is delving into smoky, hidden corners of house music where dub lingers thick in the air and rough textures scuff depth and character into the synth work. "Aventijn" has a purposeful drum machine tick but its utterly somnambulant in its execution, while "KIAR" lilts on a dusty groove and woozy clouds of funk. "Duppy" has a distinct dub techno influence, but it's still a steadfast house groover at heart, and "Amulius Numitor" ditches the beats for a pure interstellar exploration. With some bonus locked grooves for creative DJs, this is a versatile and imaginatively rendered EP with creative spark to match its usefulness in the mix.

Label head honchos Audiojack take over for this one, fittingly titled Isolation Tapes 1.The music takes a much different turn than expected over the EP's three tracks: from the tunnelling back room dub of 'Introspection' (feat Polarbear) to the slinky and hypnotic trance inflections of the utterly euphoric 'Stellar' on the flip, which is followed by a collaboration with ascendant London-based duo Eli & Fur on 'Obsession' that goes for an early '90s Chicago vibe in the vein of Larry heard et al.

Review: Between 2000 and 2002, Roman Flugel's Tracks on Delivery EP series helped usher in a new era of minimal techno - one built on little more than hypnotic drum machine rhythms and druggy electronic noises. This essential triple-album tells the story of the series, offering up remastered versions of all 15 tracks included on the four 12" singles to date. As you'd expect, it's mostly a collection of surging, stripped-back and mind-mangling techno cuts, but there are also some decent deviations into crunchy club electro and fuller-sounding peak-time workouts. This edition also boasts two previously unreleased tracks recorded during the same period: the super-trippy 'Pattern 16' and the Andrew Weatherall/Blood Sugar-influenced 'Pattern 17'.

Review: There's a fair chance you'll already have heard "Cola", experienced production duo Camelphat's collaboration with vocalist Elderbrook. The original version, with its rumbling bass, atmospheric builds, subtle bassline house influence and "she sips the Coca-Cola" refrain, has become something of an anthem since first appearing on digital download earlier in the year. For this first vinyl release, Defected has packaged the now-familiar original mix with a trio of reworks. The most impressive of these comes from German veteran Mousse T. He brilliantly re-casts the track as a bumpin' chunk of celebratory disco-house complete with thrilling piano riffs and an elastic bassline.

Review: Polynation's artist alias is apt given the global array of musical scenes the project distills into arresting electronic sounds. Over the course of eight minutes, 'Wildeburg' layers up fine synth craft and progressive melodies to a fine climax. 'Coral' then gets more gritty, with textured bass, motorik kick drums and star-gazing pads all working you into a trance. The second version of 'Coral' is a stripped back version. Much more forlorn and melancholic, it's for deep thought and day dreams, and washes over you to subtly uplifting effect.

His mighty Desolat label has been a main concern for years, but now he heads back into the underground with more challenging sounds. 'Don't Run' is dark and menacing, with unsettling vocals and twisted tech house drums. Review: After acrimoniously parting company with Warp Records - a label they helped to establish - in early 1990, Forgemasters (Rob Gordon, Winston Hazel and Sean Maher) continued recording music, most of which has remained unissued ever since. 'Skies Over Sheffield', which Hazel rediscovered on a DAT tape last year, is one such cut. Featuring typically skittish, electro-influenced drums, weighty sub-bass and a mixture of rave-igniting stabs and picturesque organ motifs, it's a genuine lost classic. The must-have original mix comes backed with a trio of 2020 reworks by Sheffield-based producers: a hardcore influenced breakbeat interpretation by Luca Lozano, a bleeping electro revision by 96 Back, and a rolling, futurist house remix from John Shima.

Review: The pursuit of the perfect fusion of minimal and tech house is an endless one that gives rise to fascinating new music each and every day of the week here at Juno HQ. No Tech Just Wax is a fledgling label who recently threw their own metaphorical hat into the market and this fourth Various Artist EP is another strong one. It brings a certain hardcore edge and punk spirit to stripped back club grooves with the opener from FRNK being a case in point. Elsewhere there is alien-infected sound from DJ WEB, rugged electro and head-wrecking acid. This EP's strengths is in its fantastic variation.

Review: Russian techno mastermind Anton Kubikov has enjoyed an incredibly productive run that has seen him grace Nervmusic, Mayak and his own Pro-tez label. Now one of his finest works, 'When Is Deep', lands on AE Recordings in four new versions from a cast of top-shelf remixers. Idealist is up first, rolling out a smooth and sublime dub house medication to keep dancers locked in and shuffling, while Ben Buitendijk simmers things down to a hypnotic pulse. Dot kicks off the B-side with an immersive, propulsive techno blend before Thor and Octal Industries complete the set with a quintessential dub techno meditation to take your mind to spell-binding new spheres of exploration.

  4. Spacecraft (6:12)
Review: Alien Recordings has decided to launch a new sub-label, Alien Imprints, which it says has been created to, "showcase various artists from around the globe". Fittingly, the new offering's debut release - a collection of electro-breaks themed excursions from newcomers and rising stars - is called First Impressions. It seems right and proper then that Juno Laser Machine's EP opener is a starting, ear-catching slab of raw, angular and spacey, acid-powered electro/breaks fusion, while the cut that follows, Marocs Coya and Cosmonaut's 'Ultimatum', is a deeper and hazier, but no less impactful, peak-time electro workout. Elsewhere, Paddy Thorne's 'Coll' is a pleasingly bubbly, intergalactic affair rich in deep bass, enveloping chords and metallic percussion hits, while Peshka's 'Spacecraft' is a deep, rumbling, sample-laden treat.

Review: Mathew Herbert's cult Accidental Jnr sub-label is all about left of centre, late night club sounds with innovation at their core. Behind this next one is Raf Rundell and mix engineer James Rand as Part Nails. They concoct a brilliant mix of wonderfully weird loops, fractured vocals, found sounds and then chuck them all together and see what happens. In the case of 'Yassassin' it is a sure to be anthemic rhythms workout that is brilliantly off-balance. 'Motherrr' is a slow and sludgy techno workout that continually whirrs and malfunctions and 'Wobbler' is just that.

  2. Huerta - "Legwork" (5:19)
  3. DJOKO - "Copyrighted" (5:55)
  4. T Jacques - "Voyetra" (6:18)
Review: The latest collection of wayward floor heaters from Nuances De Nuit takes us once more into a colourful headspace where the possibilities are wide open to make house music with personality. Californian shining star Liquid Earth is up first, although he's better known as Urulu. 'X-Form' is a bubbling metropolis of futuristic synth squiggles with starry-eyed wonder in its heart and vintage techno smarts up top. Huerta follows up that sterling start with the enchanting electro incantations of 'Legwork', which build wonderfully on the sound laid out on his recent debut album for Voyage Recordings. On the flip, DJOKO brings a smart shuffle and some shimmering synth work to the forefront for a seriously smart twist on the tech house template, while T. Jacques opts for space age machine funk with a splash of boogie poured in for good measure.

UK Garage
  1. Don't Know
  2. Creeps
Review: Hold tight for more white-knuckle garage exploration from Burnski's Instinct project, which hits release number 13 in fine style with a sharply focused two tracker from the man himself. "Don't Know" is a dark and heavy affair with some tightly wound RnB vocal licks and a mean tempered bass swell. "Creeps" is a more sprightly affair with plush pad sweeps and a more nimble sub line, but it's still a peppy stepper to get you swinging hard. If you love garage, and particularly the resurgent wave of inventive twists on the original sound, then you should be copping this record without giving it a moment's thought.

Review: Kepler has already been on a barnstorming run over the past 12 months with key drops on Pleasure Zone, Hoarder and Discotech amongst many others, not to mention his killer garage excursions as 0113. Now he shores up on Constant Sound with some fizzing, energetically charged techno that packs a punch and dazzles on top thanks to an acute sense of melody. DX7 organ basslines collide with cosmic arps and a thumping rhythm section on "Contact", while "Afterglow" takes things a little deeper without dropping the tempo. "Movement" revels in a cascade of interwoven synth lines, while "Pulse" takes a leaner, clubbier route without losing that up-for-it rush around the upper 120 BPM range.

Review: Malaga's Cuartero is next up on Constant Black, bringing a finely honed minimal house sound that fits into the label's shadowy club aesthetic perfectly. "Rame" is a driving, insistent slice of stripped down house with plenty of subtle wriggles and textures gurgling away under the surface. "Melkor" has some tougher drums, not least around the low end, but the same economy of sonics is applied here where the beat takes the lead and the FX skirt and skitter around the beat. "Caterpillar" has a tougher, less swung accent to its beats, but the chunky drum machine patterns are still executed with that stern focus that makes a minimal track pop off in the mix.
