Review: After impressing with 12" excursions on IBR and Beats In Space, Matt Karmil transfers to the long-playing format for the first time. The Colonge producer's distinctive take on deep house - loose but hypnotic, featuring enveloping chords, scratchy found sounds and wonky, off-kilter rhythms - certainly suits the album format, making this debut something of a surprise winner. Karmil is at his best when lacing simple, hypnotic melodies over ultra-deep grooves, as on the enticing "Live The Dream" and "Frankrike (Float)". Yet it's arguably the album's more intriguing moments - the cut-up deep techno pulse of "Holding" and dub techno-influenced "A Lot To Share" - that catch the ear the most. Either way, it's a pretty strong debut.

Review: Having demonstrated the breadth of his artistic vision with the excellent One Against Time album last year, John Dimas returns to Half Baked with a focused 12" of dancefloor heaters that keep the vibe varied but the beats ever-present. "5putn1k" is a cheeky, boxy workout with plenty of swing and some wriggling bassline flex. "@L5d" takes a trippier route through spaced out synth lines and a subliminal rhythm section for maximum lock-in, and then "5p@c3 T@lk" heads skywards with a gorgeous tapestry of melodious expression strapped to a rock-solid groove. "@rkyn" completes the set with a snagging 2-step funk and plenty of the space in the mix for the meditative crew to get all eyes-closed to.

Review: When assessing the work of any musician or producer, it's important to look for signs of artistic development. Happily, there are plenty on this latest full-length collection of cuts by Church chief (and fast rising producer) Seb Wildblood. Musically, it's far more expansive, considered and varied than some of his previous work, moving from gently sun-kissed, sax-laden deep house warmth (":~^") and Ron Trent style smoothness ("Plants"), to fireside-hot dream house loveliness ("Mmm"), via the languid downtempo headiness of 'Deptford Synths|. Throughout, there's a greater emphasis on organic, live-sounding percussion, pleasingly colourful synths, and the kind of drowsy chord progressions that some would describe as "Balearic" in tone.

Review: John Frusciante of Red Hot Chilli Peppers fame has always had a fine outlet to explore his passion for electronic music courtesy of the Los Angeles label and 303 lovers at Acid Test. He's turned out plenty of EPs and LPs now and 2023 kicks off with his latest offering I. It is a double album with the scones part II also forming his first new solo material since 2020. He has said of the rather sculptural album: "This music was made from sequences which never exceed a single note, many of these pieces being made on a single pattern."

Review: It's another leviathan of a reissue from the ever-impressive Medical label, and this time it's Iko's turn to exit the nutty Discogs prices and enter a new light of day. Iko were a minimal wave outfit from Canada, and although much of their work is praised by the synth freaks, it's the present 83 which has been causing a stir since its first release on Manhattan-Formula back in 1982. Nine tracks of spectral minimalism and industrial explorations here; it's all very singular, but the killers have to be "Elevator" for its utterly gnarly arrangement, "Jungle City" because it's simply out-there and way ahead of its time, and "Radioactive Mist" for that bassline! Be quick - you probably won't see this again for a few decades...

Review: Montreal's IKO put out this minimal synth gem in 1982. It has since become a real cult classic but has been long out of print so has attained cult status. Finally this overdue reissue arrives and allows us all to bask in the glory of its child synth sounds, cold wave stylings and icy melodies. It sounds like Kraftwerk if they'd dropped a pill - sleek, future, but a little more fun. Alongside all the original tracks are some extra tunes recorded in the same session to add real value for fans old and new. This is a timeless record that works in any situation.

Review: This acid tech-trance gem was first released in 1996, and first made an appearance on the suitably Star Trek-themed Spock Records, an Italian label that saw to much trance of the utmost quality get released during its Italo heyday. The victim of horrible scalping, it's well overdue for a rerelease. 'Fun-K' is the highlight, showing off producer Bhasmantam's (Gieuseppe Pol's) sensitive and detail-oriented trance production chops, straddling euphoria and technicality in a manner that does not alienate or confuse. The remaining tunes are more breathable and minimal affairs, but all build a world that captivate as they do enthrall.

Hot on the heels of their "Mesquite Beat" 45 comes this equally earthy and frank doublet. "'Bout To Blow" is a big pant swinging blues affair while "Saints & Beggars" takes us up a notch with a whirling 6/8 signature whirling waltz where the horns and drums take the lead and we follow in their every dreamy footstep. Review: A repress here of 2019's under the radar 'Box EP by The enigmatic British producer JS Zeiter, who executed more greyscale dub techno excursions of a typically high caliber on this one. After some spookily sensual ASMR action on intro 'The Code' he continues to build the suspense on the beatless Subarctic Soundscape of 'Darkness Falls' before dropping the power on the cavernous and glacial beats of 'On The Moor'. Flip over and take on more of the frozen seascape on the deeply hypnotic groove of "Empty" before one more emotional ambient outro in the form of 'Endgame'.

The vocals are all sung in a language of made up gibberish called 'Hopelandic' that lends the already intriguing music and air of extra enigma. As is often the case with this band, the tracks often head to huge climaxes that are as thrilling now, 18 years after first being recorded, as they ever were.

It's a perfectly formed album of sweet but scuffed Americana with Jenkins tender vocal style offset by grizzled playing from Josh Kaufman. It's a powerful blend which leaves room for gnarled overtones and woozy melodics, creating a certain sparkle which sets Jenkins' songs apart. With intimate, meandering narratives folded into her lyrics, this is an album crafted with delicacy to sink deep under the skin - the kind of songs you'll carry with you for eternity.

On the A-side you'll find Tom Moulton's scarce, five-minute club version of soul man Bobby Moore's '(Call Me Your) Anything Man', a delightfully orchestrated and super-sweet dancefloor workout built around a Latin-tinged groove reminiscent of Grace Jones' 'La Vie En Rose', which of course Moulton later famously remixed. Over on the flip there's a chance to savour West End Records' boss Mel Cheren's wonderfully over-the-top dancefloor extension of obscure vocal group Sweet Music's soaring cover of K.C & The Sunshine Band favourite 'I Get Lifted'. It's very different to their much-loved take, but every bit as essential.

Review: Welsh multi-instrumental troubadour Gruff Rhys has never shied away from tackling expansive subjects, whether that's the American Interior or the plight of 21st Century Britain, as seems to be the case here. The germination for this collection of original recordings, demos and songs happened back in 2016, a year when Brexit was beginning to loom large, Bowie died, and this album become the last thing recorded at Ali Chant's studio - another creative space bulldozed to make way for redevelopment.

The tracks themselves are less obtuse about that backdrop than the 'Plague' in the title, but the classic intensity of Rhys is very much at play here. A guy who manages to hook us in with a very gentle kind of witchcraft, tracks built around locked guitar hooks and smoothly give way to sprawling overtures, but there's also a potent campfire intimacy here, too - the hushed master storyteller holding his audience from beginning to end.

"(Eerie) For Your Love" is particularly potent, with the duo layering up line after line of synthesizer sweetness atop a jazzy and tactile groove. It's positive, atmospheric and thoroughly beguiling, with nods towards classic Floating Points and the 'scandolearic' nu-disco of Prins Thomas's Full Pupp label. The duo's love of loose and snappy drum machine percussion comes to the fore on the similarly blissful and Balearic B-side, "Maiden Voyage", which is every bit as delightful as its' predecessor.

Review: American composer Mary Jane Leach is a composer/performer who works with the physicality of sound, its acoustic properties and how they interact with space. She has played an instrumental role in NYC's pioneering Downtown avant-garde community since the 70s, working alongside peers including Arthur Russell, Ellen Fullman, Peter Zummo, Philip Corner and Arnold Dreyblatt. The four recordings featured here on her fourth album entitled (f)lute songs feature Italian flautist Manuel Zurria, and spans a period of over 30 years inspired by her fascination with sound and performance.

Review: 1981's (Gida-Gida) Tight & Tidy by Ambiance is a rare-as-hens-teeth LP that has just been in the bags of serious collectors for too long. Led by saxophonist Daoud Abubakar Balewa, this singular work of jazz fusion has been the product of serious training and attention from the likes of Frank Mitchell and Jackie McLean but, like so many incredible albums from that era, you could say that it has been lost in the mix; thankfully, High Jazz have done us the favour of remastering and reissuing. The sax features prominently on this sublime piece of work, but the arrangements are loose, free-minded and even considerably spiritual in look-and-feel. Moreover, there are notable elements of disco thanks to the funky bass tones riding magnificently beneath the jazzy instrumentals. Don't miss...

Review: Here's a nod to late 70s disco, funk and boogie featuring some of the best NYC musicians to grace the scene in the past 20 years, and recorded at Soul Fire Studios featuring over two dozen musicians. Members of El Michels Affair, Lee Fields & The Expressions, The Dap- Kings, Antibalas and more are featured on 10th Street's '(Gonna Get) Hot Tonight' which is a classic and timeless disco funk affair featuring an absolutely sublime string section. Over on the flip, the slower and more emotive 'Hot Tonight' (part II) makes for feelgood vibes on the dancefloor later in the night, featuring sensual vocals to boot.

Review: Witness the sickness. Kahn & Neek reunite for their first release in over four years on Boofy's Sector 7 and the wait's been more than worth it. Still full of tension, still unbounded, still heavy as elephants, "(Having A Sick Time) In The Mansions Of Bliss" takes the lead and it's classic K&N business with its grime elements and big downpitched string riff. It's backed by three more disarming messages: Both "Random Lab" and "Shimmer" take things down to 130 creating more space between the drum hits and heavy chords before "Venus" bids the last farewell with dense atmospheres, big clouds of harmonics and some unique drum sounds. Let's hope they don't leave it another four years.

Review: Straight form the heart of London via the mind of Detroit, the ever-consistent Soul Brother crew have laid down another stellar reissue here through Dee Edwards' gorgeous "(I Can) Deal With That". Originally out on the much-coveted De-To label in 1977, the original mix is a delicate, whaling soul monster that'll melt your heart from its first guitar riff - Edwards' voice is truly magnetic over the slow-burning percussion. There's a more stripped-down 'Strings' version to act as the cherry on the cake - you just gotta.

Review: If you enjoyed Andras Fox and Oscar S Thorn's brilliant sophomore album, Cafe Romantica, this 12" should be essential listening. The EP's title track picks up where that set left off, with the duo once again conjuring a perfect balance between soulful synth-pop, lilting Balearica, and the kind of sumptuous deep house on which Larry Heard made his name. On the flip you'll find some fine remixes of album highlight "Looking Back". While Tornado Wallace's deep Balearic house take is rather wonderful, it's Zanzibar Channel's interpretation that stands out. Somehow, they've re-cast the deep and dreamy original as a madcap chunk of lo-fi P-funk.

You might have heard these dudes before, either as Soul Fortune Society or Stormer & The Stolen Hearts; whatever the pseudonym, they're clearly into the romance! The title tune, "(I Need To) Repair My Heart" is a majestic soul ballad with a funky edge, spear-headed by lovely, seductive vocals and a charging rhythm exuding love from all angles. The flipside "Ho Happy Day" is similarly heartfelt, this time pushing the tempo further, and offering a comparatively more Japanese ring thanks to the track's backing vocals. Good music for good people.

NiNo like most artists on this label gigs often and plays live in Chicago to plenty of happy fans. Apparently they often ask if he is a shaman such are his magical musical skills. He calls his sound Energetic Space Music and it finds him getting the best out of his collaborators who whom he improvises without preconceived ideas of what might come out the other side. This superb album (I'm just) Chillin' captures some of the results and mixes up energetic drums equally indebted to jazz and electronic funk.

Review: A favourite of connoisseurs and '60s diehards everywhere following their show-stealing turn at Liverpool Psych Fest last year, and with endorsements from the likes of Andrew Weatherall under their belt, The Liminanas have made their mark with a uniquely gallic take on classic Spector-esque pop; taking the same kind of Rayban-wearing, Velvets-revering frame of reference as The Jesus & Mary Chain and filtering it through a louche Gainsbourg vision. This singles and anomalies collection makes for an effortlessly cool and decidedly refreshing tonic, deploying swagger, style and insouciance with elan aplenty.

Review: Athens of the North's Euan Fryer is not the only collector and selector who believes that the Leaders' obscenely rare 1971 single '(It's A) Rat Race' should be considered a genuine deep funk classic. In fact, it was deep funk specialist Keb Darge who first brought the record to the attention of DJs and dancers in the UK in the early 2000s. Happily Fryer has tracked down the band and got their permission to reissue their sought-after classic. Formidably funky, the A-side version features fantastic group vocals rising above a bed of hazy horns, bustling drums, warm bass and razor-sharp, Blaxploitation style guitars. The accompanying instrumental take is superb, too, with a variety of woodwind and brass solos - often drenched in reverb - replacing the group's fine vocals.

(Let's) Get Down! (Sweetversion)
(Let's) Get Down! (original mix)
(Let's) Get Down! (groove remix)
Review: "Let's Get Down!" is the new solo project from DJ Franky Sweetz. This is the first single on the Playectra label, sub label of Selini Collaborations. "Let's Get Down!" brings a variety of styles, combined in one record. The "Sweet version" of "Let's Get Down!" is based on a basic Spanish guitar melody with uplifting vocals and funky hihats. The funky guitar even gets a little out of tone sometimes, to give that real 12" feeling to it. The "low" bassline combined with the stabbing kick delivers a groovy summer feeling to the track. The original mix is a powerful club record with an electro-twist. Especially the fat chunky bassline puts the dance floor to work. The energetic and aggressive sweep in the break, brings the track and the crowd to a higher level until the kick smashes in. The "Cs2x" electro melody gives more of a funky melody with raw edges. This version is already a serious clubbanger in several clubs. The "groove remix" started out as a experimental version of "Let's Get Down!" but the vocals were so catchy, Playectra decided to produce a more groovy version of it. The raw sounding guitar and crushed hihats makes the track loose his sweetness to give the track a stronger and energetic feel. The long break in the middle of the track pushes the track to a climax. The filtered guitars and loud bassline makes the track a little bit French sounding.
