Review: UK experimentalist Chris Clark presents his tenth long-player, and the first not to be released by the mighty Warp. Across the album's 14 tracks he explores a range of downtempo territories, from neo-classical pieces like 'Simple Homecoming Loop' to brooding electro-folk ('Coffin Knocker') to straight-up ambience ('Banished Hymnal'). It's fair to say Clark's work is something of an acquired taste, being much more about sound (and sound design) than it is about rhythm or melody, but a discography as long as his doesn't lie and existing fans will lap this up, even if it's unlikely to convert many new ones.

Review: Best just keep coming with the Italo heat, once again tapping into that golden year of 1984. Funky Family was a one-shot studio project that left a much-vaunted record in its wake. The visionary nature of "Funk Is On" is impossible to ignore - from the noirish mood to the physical thrust of the arpeggios, the diva vocals and tough 4/4 groove, this is house music in all but name. Whether you want the vocal cut or the instrumental, Best have you covered - either is going to set the dancefloor alight.

Review: Cellophane was a cult project from Alessandro Novaga, an Italo producer who created tracks with a huge influence on the development of Chicago house. Besides his other production credits, Cellophane is an especially visionary venture that favours expansive, psychedelic suites of electronic disco over traditional song structures - just the kind of rare, oddball curiosity Best do such a good job of reissuing. While the A side is excellent in its own right, "Music Colours (Part 3)" on the B-side is the bomb here. Stomping, trippy and utterly addictive - from the Music Box to your record bag this kind of music just doesn't age.

We Love To Party
The Greatest
Review: Finnish DJ crew Rollomatik break out on the Boogie Boutique imprint with a two track release that aims to represent the Arctic Circle fully in the nu funk/breakbeat scene. Formed of Hesh & Eaves, Rollomatik aim to rock the party and that much is evident on this cheeky 12" with "We Love To Party" deftly blending Will Smith with Chic amidst a melange of other recognisable samples. A similar approach runs through flipside jam "The Greatest" as Rollomatik lay down the vocal from an oft used Q-Tip solo joint over a heavily filtered take on Sister Sledge's most ubiquitous track.

Review: Assiduous presents their first vinyl release which is full of deep richness and undiluted soul. Side A contains heavy bass, synth stabs and a driving four to the floor beat that keeps the groove while a female vocal emerges later adding a bit of mysticism to the vibe on, "Meat And Potatoes". Side B brings to mind the sound of hard work in motion which is what the outfit, Assiduous is noted for. An aggressive deep house attribute that is also laced with a soulful female vocal that seems to stir up a spiritual overtone into the mix on, "No Mo".

Review: Detroit mainstay Waajeed is back on the case with another heavyweight slab for his Dirt Tech Reck label. "Heavy" pulls no punches - this track is peak time soul music turned up to 11 not least thanks to Wu-Tang songstress Blue Raspberry under alias Candi Lindsey's staggering diva vocal. The track also comes in instrumental form, but trust us and reach for the vocal to send a crowd into rapture. Lindsey returns on "Deeper Into Blue", another sprightly house cut with melancholy and hope in equal measure. "Too Black" rounds the EP off with a twitching broken beat groove that speaks to Waajeed's accomplished history in the truly soulful end of contemporary club music.

A proud piece of UK jazz boogie, it's not heard to hear why it's been in such demand. Timeless, spacious and laced with intoxicating vocals and a superbly trippy dub version on the B that was way ahead of its time. Grab it while you can.

High Gates (3:39)

Collapsed Buildings (6:09)
Review: L.I.E.S latest muscular missive comes courtesy of Dutch scene stalwarts Parrish Smith (previously of Knekelhuis and Dekmantel) and Interstellar Funk (AKA Artificial Dance big cheese Olf van Elden). Rich in machine drums, cranky modular synth sounds and industrial intent, the four-track missive sees them angrily stomp between mind-altering, mid-tempo throb-jobs (the strobe-lit electronics and druggy arpeggio lines of "Misinformation"), buzzing 4/4 electro ("High Gates"), raw, redlined, noise-addled techno ("Macrodosing") and the kind of dark, moody and throbbing dancefloor fare that sits somewhere between angular industrial music and frustrated, lo-fi techno ("Collapsed Buildings"). For want of a better term, this is music for dystopian dancehalls, prorogued parliaments and the children of broken societies.

Review: The latest missive in the L.I.E.S. ongoing series of collaborative EPs brings together Cititrax regular An-I (AKA sometime leftfield disco maverick Doug Lee) and Berlin-based experimental electronics maverick Unhuman. The pair begins in forthright fashion, moving from the racing drum machine heartbeats, rhythmic noise and mangled yelps of "Five To Nine", to the doomy bass, triple-time beats and clanking metallic hits of post-punk number "Hate Thy Neighbour". Over on side B they mutilate electro beyond almost all recognition on the alien insanity of "Entschuldigung" before lolloping towards a conclusion with the fuzzy industrial funk thrust of "Cannibals".

Review: Astrolife gathers together a cast of classy house warriors who know how to take things deep in style. Nigel Hayes opens the 12" up with an iconic sample framed by smoky pads and chunky rhythms. Collate & Balaur bring something a little more dubby, and dare we say it's infected with a little Goa-ready hypnosis. M&M get remixed by DJ Rocca for the high-pressure, Colonel Abrams-flavoured "Vibe" and Vincent Inc tackles a classic from Duke and creates a freaked-out exotic fever dream of a version for the adventurous souls out there. It's the perfect finishing touch to a record that balances poppy appeal with electronic weirdness in a fresh and flamboyant way.

Review: Since making his debut in 2015, Chris Stussy has released a remarkable amount of music. Yet it's hard to fault any of his 22 previous EPs, which tend towards the chunkier, tech-tinged end of the deep house spectrum. His latest four-tracker is naturally full of top-notch cuts, too. Check first opener "Edge of the Mirror", where wonderfully melodic musical elements wrap themselves around a tough electronic deep house groove, before diving into the bass-heavy early morning hypnotism of "Forever Moving", which sounds like something you'd have heard at Twilo in New York circa 1996. "Synchronicity" is a string-drenched treat blessed with a fantastically rush-inducing breakdown, while "Electro Girl" is a fine fusion of tech-house electronics and oven-hot deep house grooves.

Review: Groovy, beguiling and hypnotic- Tusk Wax is a label where anything can happen while still boasting coherency throughout its catalogue. If that sounds vague that's the point; elements of house, funk, jazz, acid and tech never far from the mixing desk. This, the imprint's 30th outing, is another limited press continuing in that fine form thanks to the always-solid Loz Goddard, formerly of Dirt Crew. One made for summertime sessions, intriguingly it could score late night hallucinatory forest raves or sun-drenched terrace parties. It just depends which cut you go for. 'Redrum' is a low-lying cosmic treat, repetitive female vocals ensuring dancefloor potential contrasting the lackadaisical melodies. 'BHD' takes us down an expanding disco wormhole, Ron Basejam's remix of 'Redrum' places the emphasis on live bass and sass, a perfect precursor to the contemporary funk of 'Drumble'.

Review: To say that Lauren Halo's peculiar brand of organic-electronic fusion is "acclaimed" would be an understatement. Her 2012 debut LP, Quarantine, was named as The Wire's album of the year. Here, the Ann Arbor raised producer continues to dazzle with another off-kilter selection of curious compositions. Veering from tipsy, near ambient soundscapes (see the unruly "Serendip" and psychedelic "Melt") to clattering percussion jams ("Oneiroi"), via deep techno ("Chance of Rain") and blissful musical simplicity (the piano lament of "Out" and beatless tropical jazz of "Dr Echt"), Chance of Rain is every bit as enthralling, unusual and inspiring as its predecessor. That's high praise indeed.

There's mystery woven in between the African percussion that shapes out her track, and it's a pleasure to get lost in. Millie & Hirsch take a tender approach to Roland D Clark's classic "I Get Deep", while Mateo & Matos push the tempo back up with the jazz-tinged "Idris Rises." Vincent Inc is last on the list, and he cruises in with the slow and strange tones of "Tears Of God".

"Afterglow" is a solid effort that continues with their fascination of classic U.S. deep house derivatives, all reinterpreted through a vibrant modern lens. From the sunny and dusted down urban blues of opener "Magic Interference", the emotive Chicago influence on late night grooves like "Hearts At Whole" or "All States Of Dawn" (particularly the latter with its irresistible jacked vocals), through to the hypnotic Latin-tinged flavour of "Beyond" or the sublime deep dub of the title track - there's nothing to fault on this fine effort.

Review: There are no prizes for guessing the sort of music that defines Rave Or Die. Next up with some dynamite club tracks are Stranger and Umwelt, who take one side each of this new marbled 10". Stranger's "Motief" is a techno crescendo that builds on hard hitting techno drums. The urgent synths and increasingly brash hi hats work you into a manic state that is all consuming. Umwelt then gets even more abrasive with caustic synths and retro rave stabs, slapping metallic hits and pounding broken kick drums all forcing you to move on "Shut Up & Dance". This is truly arresting stuff once again from Rave Or Die.

Review: While more usually recognised as Ann Arbor veteran Tadd Mullinix's acid house alias, JTC has always been more all-encompassing of classic electronic sounds. Taking in the aesthetics of nearby Detroit and Chicago, with Berlin techno and Belgian new beat influences along the way. With his new release on Spectral titled 'Indigo, Flesh and Fire', Mullinix takes a more direct and straight ahead route, with these infectious and functional techno tools that respectfully take their cues from the early Purposemaker and M-Plant back catalogue. From the hypnotic groove of "Innerloire Rendezvous" with its classic synopation and flanged hi-hats, the strobe-lit sensation of "Varastride" perfect for those heads down moments with its sonar pulse - that later makes way for that hands in the air melody. On the flip, we were particularly enamoured by the hi-tech jazz of "Surging On Chapinero's Edge" calling to mind the legend 'Mad' Mike Banks classic moments.

Review: Semtek leaves the comfort of his excellent Don't Be Afraid imprint to supply the third 12 inch on Andy Blake's In Plain Sight label, following stellar turns from YoungTee and Maarten Van Der Vleuten. It's not the first time Blake has called on the London-based producer's services - World Unknown devotees will remember the monolithic "Tacos For Dinner" cut in association with Chardonnay that appeared on that label's most recent 12". "Couer De Lyon" is a chunky house jam of the highest order; shuffling hats, a stripped back bassline and a vocal many of you will recognise from one of MK's most legendary remixes combine for a cut that overflows with sultry late night passion. Flip over for some soundtracky house in the shape of "Beaufort", an analogue jam in the mould of Legowelt that retains a club-ready potency and thus offers a more heads-down alternative to the A-Side.

Renamed Living In Fear and featuring a rearranged, remastered grip of 11 tracks, it's hard to believe techno this inventive and original managed to stay as a limited CD release for so long. There's a rough and ready Midwestern techno finish to many of the tracks on offer, but between the tough impact of certain sounds there's a great deal of subtlety to enjoy throughout this album. Surefire floor workouts like "Self Education" meet with playful hip hop experiments to make for a wholly enjoyable, not to mention surprising, listening experience.

He's also one of the most prolific, with this strong outing being his 16th single for Mark Knight's imprint. "Let Me Love You", a bouncy contemporary cover of Kariya's 1988 house classic, has all the makings of a massive hit. The A-side original version combines classic elements - bold piano riffs and synths that subtly doff a cap to Kariya's version - with heavy electro-house bass and bumpin' beats. You Are Me
Review: With two critically acclaimed albums to his name, Omid 16B is in the midst of creating a third! And whilst we await fulfillment through its fruits, here are two new prized productions providing a sweet taster of his forthcoming project. Omid's 'Psco' is an atmospheric, breaks driven beauty that seems to create its own impetus, soaring, swirling and dipping as freely as a bird in flight. An immense masterpiece sculpted from a sophisticated range of syncopated rhythms, it is saturated with the moody melodies and fierce 'Squelch Factor' of pulsating synthesisers, hypnotic key patterns and deep, growling sub-bass. With a subtle but captivating Giorgio Moroder/Midnight Express flavour, 'Psco' sounds like a fresh, electrifying soundtrack to a movie that is moving clubland. 'You Are Me', meanwhile, is a classic 16B production. A radiant metamorphosis of electronic funk, its inspired drum programming, sweeping synth patterns, crisp hi-hats and driving percussion all pave the way for a solid, uplifting 4/4 groove that is second to none. The breakdown is heavenly, honing in on cascading colours, piano melodies and infectious rhythms as the bubbling analogue-sounding bassline is dropped. Twisted, tweaked and filtered to perfection, the arrangement is achingly beautiful, its drama addictive. 100% pure16B productions, these tracks are guaranteed to move the crowds, play them loud!

This return to action has been masterminded by Merseyside scalpel fiends Greg Wilson ("GW") and Henry Greenwood, whose fine revision of Neneh Cherry's "Buffalo Stance" kick-started the imprint six years ago. A-side "Disco Mondo" is a rolling revision of a lesser-known breathy disco jam of (we think) Italian origin. It boasts a metronomic groove, wah-wah guitars, elongated organ chords, congas for days and a few well-placed swirling electronic effects. Over on side B, "In The City" is a dreamy chunk of mid-tempo, Italo-disco influenced synth-pop.

Review: While much of L.I.E.S founder Ron Morelli's production work has tended towards the dark and dystopian, there's something surprisingly becalmed and gentle about his latest full-length excursion, fifth solo album "Man Walks The Earth". Of course, there are still some slightly bleak, detached soundscapes dotted throughout the album (see "30 Million Years To Recover", the Radiophonic Workshop influenced "A Long Walk at Night" and the icy, off-key tipsiness of "Uninvited Brute"), for the most part Morelli deals in slowly shifting motifs, sustained ambient melodies and reverb-drenched electronics. The result is an album that's as mind-altering and otherworldly as it is accessible and entertaining.

Review: Ovine build on the momentum of their first EP with another new house offering that is beautifully deep. It features two tracks each from Dan Piu and Pohl, and they all hack back to dreamy Italo, classic Mr Fingers and the more pensive Chicago greats. "Depresismatica" is a real highlight with its meandering basslines and infinite cosmic horizons. "Mello Phone" offers more pixelated melodies and busy beats and "Space In The Distance" has the sort of freaky edges and dusty analog textures house lovers always fall for. Already, then, this is a label that is setting a high standard.

Review: Alongside like-minded imprints Claremont 56 and International Feel, Coyote's Is It Balearic? label - a fitting name, given the difficulty in pinpointing the Balearic sound - has been at the forefront of the nu-Balearic scene for the last five years. Here, they celebrate that fact by offering up a celebratory compilation with pal Moonboots and Coyote each selecting a disc of unmixed favourites. There's predictably plenty of sun-kissed downtempo warmth (Windsurf's sunrise-friendly remix of Coyote's "Laidback", Gavin Gordon's flamenco-influenced "El Sueno Oscuro"), alongside a smattering of deliciously baggy and wide-eyed dancefloor moments (see Max Essa's jaunty Balearic disco jam "Heartache" and a thrillingly griity Soft Rocks remix of Social Disco Club). If that wasn't enough to get the juices flowing, the collection also features some stunning unreleased material from Freshro and Khidja Looki.

Review: The golden, gospel tinged soul of Michael Orr has been popularised by DJs like Hunee and Floating Points, who have long been playing "Here I Go (Through These Changes Again)", which features on this classic 1976 album. The American's music is joyous and celebratory thanks to his spiritual lyrics and soaring delivery, as well as its freeform flute lines and raw drum work. Made with bass player Carey Harris, it's a fine fusion of soul, r&b, gospel, funk and jazz with the sort of golden touches you'd associate with studio wizard Quincy Jones. Gorgeous stuff.

Ol' Dirty (5:08)
Forever (5:09)
Review: Dirty in both name and delivery, Mr K offers up two tracks of deep, low-slung, venue-rattling dubstep that pays homage to the formative half-time years before people started using words like 'post' and 'not' to try and define the genre's development. Skankers of the world unite, if you catch the drift. 'Ol Dirty' threatens to ruin subs with its reverb'd lows and loose, easy going drums, reminding us of why dubstep should start with dub. 'Forever' is a more complex outing, smoky piano keys lolling over the top of a lazy rhythm, top end brass stabs jazzing things up before slow and sexy wind adds to the impressive musicality. Throw in a timeless spoken word sample and the result is an accomplished piece that'll sound equally intoxicating at home, in your headphones or setting late evening vibes.

Review: Now into his third decade as a full-time drum and bass producer, Seba continues to serve up high quality EPs at a furious rate. "Close To You" is the Swede's fifth 12" of 2018, yet it's every bit as alluring and essential as any of its predecessors. We're particularly enjoying the colourful, soulful flutter of the rhythmically punchy title track, though opener "She Looks Real" - a more foreboding, warehouse-friendly workout - and "Time Will Tell" are almost as good. Arguably best of all, though, is "Why Can't This End", where a poignant, heartfelt vocal from what sounds like house legend Robert Owens majestically rises above deep, spacey melodies and rolling drum and bass rhythms.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: After years of staggering second hand prices, London's Silverlining is addressing the demand for some of his early work by issuing a series of 12"s with some of the finest tracks from his mid '90s era. This time around the tracks come from releases on Wiggle and Wrong, and they sound like they haven't aged one bit. "Pleasures & Treasures" is an upfront burner steeped in 909 drums and hubby synth tones, while "Ni-Cd Deluxe" works up a nagging line in emotive electro. "Spannered In Dub" may well be the track that gets the most airings with its minimal disposition, strong rhythm section and utterly addictive groove.

Review: DJ Haus' ever-expanding deviant house music empire continues to impress with another installment of House Crime, this time committed by Szch. The 12" kicks off with the fast and freaky "Girl I Neva" which borders on juke levels of nagging sample chops, before the script gets crumpled up and tossed at the bin with the wonderfully scruffy rave deconstruction of "Peugeot 106 At Sunrise (Pingers Mix)". "Unconditional (Edit)" brings something a little smoother to the mix, although that underlying weirdness that comes with House Crime releases is still lurking in the wings. "UKLJUCEN TI JE BLUTUT" finishes the EP off in a rowdy yet reflective style - long may the strange tale of House Crime continue.

Here the pair inaugurates a new series, Voam Club Archive, in which they'll offer up tracks recorded during live performances. For fans of raging, hard-wired club techno, there's much to enjoy, from the intoxicating, acid-fired stomp of "Berlin - Live Cut 1" and the redlined intensity of the dark and distorted "Berlin - Live Cut 2", to the Sheffield style bleep melodies, wild electronics and Lory D style grooves of "Rome - Live Cut 1". Arguably best of all, though, is the metallic, forthright insanity of closing track "Amsterdam - Live Cut 1".

Review: LKR hits release number 007 with a suitably smooth and stealthy electro offering from Ouxh. This is a new, mysterious artist making their debut, and an impressive one at that: the title track is a thoughtful number thanks to the lingering chords which hang behind muted drums and perc, while "Birdman" has a chirping bird lost in a rather eerie landscape populated by a corrugated bassline and unsettling chords. Last of all is the excellent "Coma Void", with stepping, jungle influenced rhythms and a tense vocal loop that pans about the mix to make for something brilliantly dynamic. On this evidence, Ouxh is one to watch.

Review: Beguiling, bewitching, enchanting and immersive. Sui Zhen's album draws the listener in with beauty and loveliness, while giving us something to think about. Namely human mortality, and whether or not we might all be able to live on as digital footprints. It's all very "Black Mirror", welcome to the 21st Century meditation on death, then. Despite this the record is far less conceptual than you might imagine, with tracks like "I Could Be There" conjuring images of Lykke Li or Regina Spektor's more advert-friendly offerings. "Natural Progression", "Another Life" and "Different Places" stick to more downtempo electronic scripts, perfectly contrasting the pop and jazz elements of "Being A Woman" and "Mountain Song" respectively. Hard to put a finger on without resorting to a series of name drops, your best bet is just to dive in and get lost in what's a very deep and multifaceted album that somehow still manages coherency.

Review: Not to be confused with German stalwart DJ T, Detroiter Alan Oldham AKA DJ T 1000 has been offering up funk-fuelled takes on Motor City techno since the mid 1990s. "I Told 'Em I Was Detroit", whose title stems from a vocal sample prominent throughout the track, is a wonderfully stomping, energetic and funk-fuelled spin on the Motor City sound, with Oldham making great use of short but mind-altering electronic stabs and ricocheting, delay-laden drum hits. Shadowy collective Scan 7 provides the first remix, offering up a suitably banging and forthright take for those who like it hot and heavy, while DJ Stingray wraps things up with a hybrid electro-techno version that sounds like an audio onslaught from an incoming fleet of intergalactic battleships.

Review: Islandman is the artistic alias of Tolga Boyuk, a Turkish producer whose 2017 debut album "Rest In Space" effortlessly joined the dots between occidental exotica, psychedelia and evocative, synth-laden Balearic beats. His second album "Kaybola" offers a similarly ear-catching and mind-altering blend of early morning mysticism, off-kilter downtempo grooves, spiraling psychedelic instrumentation and quirky cuts that defy lazy categorization. Review: Number 7 in Music is Love's sister label MIL arrives and throws the spotlight on rising Irish producer Chris Hanna, last seen impressing for Ejeca's Exploris label. Opening proceedings on Muscle House is "Drone", a rough and distorted track that is narrated by the constant synth buzzing above the heavy groove laid down by Hanna. Complementing this, "The Colonel" maintains a peak time mood with some furiously paced drums cannoning around the mix atop a heavily sequenced bassline. Title track "Muscle House" opens the B-side, offering Hanna the chance to show off his prowess at acid lines, whilst closer "UM9" veers off into epic, emotive territory without losing any of the rugged, rhythmic physicality shown throughout the 12".

The vocals on the original tracks have a haunting edge to them thanks to some hefty processing, but the power in the delivery is undeniable.
