Review: The always adventurous Especial label is back on its world travels once more for another cultured EP, this time from Jonne Lyden aka 53X. This is a widescreen bass exploration with trance-tinged steppas looking firmly to the future from the Finnish-born artist. He has a background in punk bands but a trip to Berlin turned his ear and now he makes experimental fusions that draw on everything from industrial to Berghain to Detroit for inspiration. His tunes are mostly started out as live jams and then edited into what we have here - club-ready sounds, rich atmospherics, acid, breaks and hypnotic rhythms.

Review: Brooklyn label Toucan Sounds deals in authentic US house music from some of the best in the game. A case in point is this new EP from Brandon Markell Holmes which features plenty of heavyweight names. First up is a rare and brilliant mix from Boompty king Derrick Carter who brings super skip and depth to his take on Rogue Vogue's 'Someone Else.' There is glorious percussion on Musclecars' 'Don't Go' that peppers a deep grove with dynamic movement as impossibly warm and jazz chords bring the soul. A collab with former Dope Jams man Anthony Nicholson on 'Found' is another soul-stirring gem and last of all Dee Digs and Joey Mercedes send further shivers down your spine with their closing cut.

Review: Any new material on FXHE has us in a frenzy! 2018 looks like a good start for the Detroit label, with boss man Omar S bringing the jams in style. 'Your Socially Awkward' features two fine servings of modern, Motor City techno-soul. There's the evocative A side cut "Games That We Play", a life affirming journey awash in uplifting pianos plus uplifting arpeggio sequences above its steely shuffle - and all supported by local heroine Diviniti's powerful vocals. On the flip, the deep groove of "Potawatomi" takes things down a notch or two, but this late night number still has a heap of bounce and emotion to it still. This follows up the late 2017 release 'Tap Dat Ass' and the debut album from local veteran Norm Talley.

Review: Sample-house maestro Nebraska (real name Alistair Gibbs) has released some of his most potent material of recent years on Friends & Relations, an imprint he established in 2016 in order to promote DJ tools, loop jams and future disco-house anthems. Your Love Is True, his first outing of 2021, is another excitable, peak-time ready gem. The standout is probably French Touch-style disco-house jam 'Your Love Is True', though the accompanying dub, which makes more of his superb percussion programming and douses many musical elements in pleasing amounts of delay, is our highlight. Over on the flip he showcases his stoned, downtempo side via the drowsy chords, trippy vocal samples and soft touch beats of 'Fuis', before brilliantly re-imagining it as an ultra-deep house workout on 'Espace Fuis'.

Review: German label Club Unite will always be one of our favourite labels simply because of the catalogue naming convention they use (check it out above). Thankfully the music is up to scratch too. This is the 30th EP and it's a split between Mellow Man and DMA, who take a side each. Mellow Man kicks off with two versions of 'Everyday', a vibe-y and happy house cut with bouncing drums and smart sax stabs that comes as an uplifting party starter and a more blissed out and deep cut. 'Get U' on the flip from Ama is served up the same - first as a vocal lead crowd pleaser with classic house drums, then a sweet and smooth cut that seduces with each drum loop.

Review: The fledgling Deeppa label is back with a seventh sublime sound, this time from Eloi who brings plenty of fresh ideas and creative sound designs to four tasteful cuts. 'You'll Keep Going' is a lush late-night fusion of noodling basslines and jazzy chords with soulful vocals and 'Karma' then gets even more horizontal in balmy chords and lazy grooves. There is a little more bite to 'Manage Your Temper' but it is still a super cuddly house sound. On the flip, 'Mental Game' offers hazy late-night reveries and 'Confusion' is a swirling mix of warm and soulful house. 'A Few More Breaks Should Do The Trick' is a jazzy and zoned-out closer. What an EP.

Review: Sound Signature boss Theo Parrish does a fine job of keeping the majority of his vast back catalogue available to buy for all. It's a tough job, too, cause most of it sells out in a quick fashion, so he has to be on the ball with reissues. A couple are landing this month and 'You Forgot' is one of them. It was his label's 15th release way back in 2001 and for many, b-side cut 'Dirt Rhodes' is one of Parrish's best and most definite tracks. The grinding mechanical grooves that lock you into a hypnotic state are overlaid with perfectly knackered-sounding Rhodes chords and it makes for a magical listen. 'You Forgot' with its soulful vocal musings and perfunctory drum sounds is not bad either.

Review: Portland-based Aaron Carlson is AC$ and this is his third outing on the cult Sakskobing label. Once again he comes at house music from a unique vantage point and mixes up the rawness of Motor City hero Omar-S with the disco dalliances of Metro Area and the deep house of Berlin. His tunes are packed with character as well as funky drum patterns such as on the seductive lo-fi house of 'Patio Protocol'. 'No Jello' is a bumping Chicago house cut with nice frayed edges and 'The Big Black Slot' is cosmic tech house with soulful heart. EPs this fresh and classy don't come along often.

Review: As Toolroom only puts out a small percentage of their releases on vinyl, those given the wax treatment tend to be anthems in waiting. Martin Ikin's 'You', featuring some seriously loved-up, glassy-eyed lead vocals from Chenai, certainly sounds like a future classic. Shamelessly positive and life-affirming, 'You' is a turn-of-the-90s style piano house workout with added 21st century weight, a few disco-house style filters and a raw, stabbing bassline. The cheery vocal version (side A) comes back by a quite different Dub mix. This opts for a darker, chunkier big room sound - all wobbly riffs, pulsing electronic noises, cut up vocal snippets and mind-mangling motifs - that should delight all those who love Toolroom's trademark sound.

Review: Four years on from the release of his original XTC EP on Hot Haus Records, Serbian old school revivalist X Coast has decided to give us a peak at the 'Lost Scrolls' - basically the other tracks in the suite that weren't released first time around. They're typically nostalgic in tone, with the Serb making extensive use of vintage house vocal samples, Korg M-1 organ riffs, squelchy TB-303 basslines and warehouse-ready riffs. 'XTC' is a mid-tempo, turn-of-the-90s style loved-up house workout, while 'XTC V' is a pacey affair rife in alternative rave riffs and organ stabs. Foamek's high-intensity revision of the latter track is a slamming techno-rave beast, while 'Horns' and 'Horizon' rep the more downtempo end of the late '80s dancefloor spectrum with predictably lovable results.

Review: Atlanta's leading deep house outlet NDATL welcomes the always on from DJ Aakmael for its next outing and as always with this producer the results are smoky and seductive. His signature sound is all about cuddly, dusty drums with deft little melodies, horns or gospel samples that lodge in your mind while you move to his compelling grooves. That's true again here with a Latin-jazz-infused opener in the form of 'Track 109.' 'Imagination' is a truly hypnotic house sound and on the flip are 'This Is Not A Game,' a killer collab with label head Kai Alce, and '102.5' which has a bassline smoother than chocolate. Review: Bumping house music from the currently unstoppable Lauren Lo Sung. Hot on the heels of her "Tesor" EP on House Puff comes this superb four-tracker on French label Rutilance. Warm, jacking, restrained and lean, there's a cool classical sense running throughout; "Worthless" is the slinky cut of the set, "All Fuzzy" trips out with low rumbling filter flare while "Five Tribe" hits a big rising boost that seems to whip up out of nowhere. Gunnter wraps up with a fittingly dreamy remix. Priceless.

Manhattan Project aka Mellow Man (Andreas Marek) is the label owner is here with his latest EP of new music. Work It offers four classy house tracks for the late-night dancefloor fanbase. No surprise by the title of the track 'Work It!', that it has all the makings of a classic Chicago-inspired track. For those who like Jasper Street Co. sound then you are sure to like 'This Luv You're Giving Me'. There are moments when these give us a gospel house vibe. Review: In 1996, Dreamscape's Ed Marshall donned a new alias, Aplomb, and delivered the first fruits of his new project to New Age House Records. Only one track was ever released on a limited label promo, "Wondering". World Building's Ari Goldman, who previously put out a compilation of Marshall's work as Dreamscape, is a fan and has decided to rescue it from obscurity via this single-sided 12". The track itself is hard to accurately pigeonhole, combining as it does dense, carnival style drums, female scat vocals, warm bass, dreamy deep house chords and synthesizer flourishes reminiscent of early '80s jazz-funk. Either way, it's a sunny and groovy chunk of obscure house positivity that's well worth a place in your collection.

Review: There is no producer named Manuel Darquart; in fact, it's a long-distance collaboration between two up-and-coming studio buffs, Louis Anderson-Rich and Sean Whittaker. Their latest EP, a first, high-profile outing on Wolf Music, is simply superb. It sees the pair offer-up a trio of loved-up, saucer-eyed cuts that draw heavily on the sunrise-ready colour of early Italian dream house, the ricocheting machine drums of proto-house and the tactile dreaminess of late 80s New Jersey deep house. Our pick is Don Carlos-esque opener 'Keep It Dxy', though the more Balearic 'Miranda' and bubbly 'Parkour' are not far behind. Review: The E-Beamz label recently debuted with a fine 12" of jungle-influenced haziness from Tim Shug and DJ Playstation. Here, they swiftly move on to EP number two, showcasing tracks from debutants DJ Boring and Magma. The former's A-side cut, "Winona" - so called because it utilizes vocal samples from an interview with actress Winona Ryder - sounds like a long-lost early '90s cut: an ultra-deep treat full of deep space chords, analogue deep house beats and psychedelic TB-303 abuse. Magma's dustier flipside cut, "You", explores similar old skool pastures, making use of both barnstorming techno drums and sweaty jungle breaks. Throw in ridiculously deep chords and riffs, and some eyes-closed vocal samples, and you have another late night winner.

Review: Omar S is clearly having fun this year - the subtle euphoria of "Here's Your Trance Now Dance" was followed by a new studio album, released recently with about six days notice - and now he's popped up with a new 12" featuring Colonel Abrams on FXHE. The legendary urban crooner turns in a typically soulful vocal turn on "Who Wrote The Rules Of Love", which comes in three versions: two R&B mixes (short and long) and a remix from Shadow Ray. It's the Shadow Ray tweak that will turn on the house heads, with a beefy acid line and chopped up vocals forming the backbone of the arrangement. Review: Way back in 1993, when his career was still in its infancy, Chicago great Roy Davis Jr donned an alternative alias, The Believers, and delivered a 12" on Strictly Rhythm: 'Who Dares To Believe In Me?' It was something of a club smash, with Ministry of Sound issuing it in the UK a year later with a swathe of new mixes. This Groovin' Records reissue boasts a trio of mixes from the original U.S 12". On the A-side you'll find the original mix, a warm, spine-tingling slab of piano-rich New York style house topped off by snaking, delay-laden saxophone lines and an inspirational spoken word vocal courtesy of Davis. Over on the reverse, Davis' own 'Just Living High Mix' - a breezier, jazzier and more colourful affair - is followed by Mind Readers' tougher, chunkier and heavier revision, which is in effect a proper dancefloor dub.

Review: Mint Condition, as you probably know if you are reading this, deals in reissuing classic tech house cuts. It has raced ahead in its mission and is now up to a 55th EP. This one brings back Presence's White Powder EP. 'Heart' opens up with dark but well swung drums overlaid with diva vocals while '$10' is a frazzled, slapping cut with bubbling basslines from the 90s. 'Power Chords' is a loved up dee house cut with echoing pads and cavernous grooves and 'Giving Love' is a jumbled of tribal hits and woodpecker bass.

Review: Italian label Roof Club aims to raise both ceilings and roofs, and continue to do so with their latest EP from Guile. Mixing a contemporary minimal approach with classic 90s sounds, this one's a neat fusion of progressive house and trance, with sprinklings of cheesy freestyle and acid thrown in for good measure. Review: Chiwax are back this week with a more than welcome reissue of Wax Fruit's one-and-only release Whispers from 1994. This was one of many aliases sussed by Toronto-based producer Ron Allen, who some of you may know for his seminal work as one half of Psyance (with Hayden Andre Brown) who released on Plus 8, as well as his work under the names Aztech, The Apache Project and The R.A.S.E. The late night mood music of the title track is a true zeitgeist from the period in which it was released, while the looped-up disco sampling deep house of 'Just A Party' or 'Mindgames' over on the flip were equally as trendsetting as anything fellow Torontonians like Nick Holder or DJ Sneak were making at the time.

Review: Boo Williams is considered a 'second generation' house musician from Chicago, one of few who followed in the footsteps of the likes of Larry Heard and Lil Louis - it's as though house music were some kind of Socratic tradition. Review: DJ/producer Philip Lauer from Frankfurt has teamed up with Berlin vocalist Dena to create a modern take on Julie Stapleton's soulful house classic, containing multiple versions. Lauer's Hotel Lauer EP on Especial in 2016 cemented his position in the scene, with albums for Permanent Vacation and Running Back. Dena, born in Bulgaria and raised in Berlin, has released electronic dance-pop stylings on Kitsune Music and K7. The EP features a Club Mix, a Demo Mix, a deep tech remix by DJ Slyngshot, and a drifting Balearic version for late summer nights and dawn.

Review: Spanish label Mate welcomes a couple of heavyweights in Rafa Santos and Franck Roger for a new deep house EP that shows the kids how it's done. It is Santos who serves up the originals starting with 'Where Is The Clubbing?' which has depth but also drive - rich pads swirl about over the supple kicks and clipped vocals bring the soulful little hooks. French maestro Franck Roger remixes with a little more swing and a stripped-back, late-night feel that is sprinkled with cosmic dust. On the flip, 'Smooth Jazz' is just that over cuddly beats as star-gazing piano tinkles and sombre sax notes bring real class. 'Don't Fool Me' shuts down with plenty of Chez Damier-style weight in the kicks and steaminess in the female vocals.

Review: It's still hard to keep up with all of Burnski's many different labels, but we're not complaining. This one, Constant Black, mixes up things with a tech and minimal twist and next to do so is Daniel Akbar. 'What' soon wins you over with its kinetic and infectious drum programming and smart samples - a phased vocal and a twisted synth lead. 'Retreat' gets more physical - the drums bang with an old-school flavour and hint of tribalism. 'Listen' is a big fat tech roller with low slung bass and 'This One' rounds out with some brilliant drum, hits and brain-frying bass sounds. Pow pow, what a record.

Review: For the label's latest on-point reissue, Groovin' Records has delved into the slim catalogue of short-lived Italian production duo Soft House Company. Originally released in 1990 and a dancefloor smash all over Europe, 'What U Need' is typical of loved-up Italian house of the period - all life-affirming piano stabs, tactile synth-bass, occasional synth-strings, rolling drum machine beats and cut-up vocal snippets from First Choice's much-sampled disco classic 'Let No Man Put Asunder'. Review: There's much to admire on this first collaborative EP from Rotterdam dwellers Jamie 3:26 and Danou P, not least epic A-side workout 'Roy Layers', a warming, drowsy and musically expansive deep house tribute to Roy Ayers. A genuine epic that stretches out for 13 magical minutes, the track boasts a variety of spacey, jazz-funk style synth solos and expressive vibraphone workouts rising above an organic, laidback deep house groove. Over on the reverse, 'Bushman B' sees them pepper a tougher, locked-in and fiendishly sub-heavy house beat with excitement and energy-packed Hammond riffs, while 'Rug Burn' is a sweat-soaked, disco-sampling beast packed to the rafters with gospel organs and thumping kick-drums.
