Notes: The follow-up to Janette Beckman's, Hip Hop Years New York 1982-1992.

British-born photographer Janette Beckman began her career at the dawn of punk rock working for music magazines The Face and Melody Maker. She shot bands including the Clash, the Specials, Boy George and the Jam as well as three Police album covers.

Drawn to the underground hip-hop scene, she moved to NYC in 1983 and photographed pioneers such as Run DMC, Slick Rick, Salt-N-Pepa, Grand Master Flash, LL Cool J and more.

Beckman has published four books : 'Made in the UK, Music of Attitude 1977-1982', 'The Breaks Stylin' and Profilin'1982-1990' 'El Hoyo Maravilla' and in 2018 'The MashUp' a collection of her Hip Hop photographs reinterpreted by legendary graffiti artists.

Her work has been exhibited in galleries worldwide and is in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Museum of the City of New York, Marseille Musee des Civilisations de l'Europe, and the Tokyo Nakamura Keith Haring Collection

She lives and works in New York, clients include Levi's and Dior.

Notes: This is a groovy little guide to all things disco - a Japanese discography that focuses on key club records from a number of different generations. As you'd guess from the title, the core focus here is the seventies - and possibly the early eighties - represented by listings of a variety of albums and other releases. The book sets out a few artist-based sections for folks like Chic, Jellybean, Jocelyn Brown, Earth Wind & Fire, and others, and also features some DJ's Choice sections, and Essential Disc Guides throughout. There's plenty here to wet your appetite, including a full colour section of rarities at the beginning, plus lots of other text and interviews in Japanese.

Notes: It explains why we have more than a hundred more record shops than we had in 2009, and how others have gained the reward from their hard work. Budget turntables, manufactures, supermarkets, chain stores, clothes shops, pressing plants and even the government are amongst the many who have benefited from their efforts.

Graham Jones has spent 32 years travelling the UK selling to independent record shops and visited more record shops than any other human. This book guides you around the record shops of the UK who sell new vinyl. He has gathered some fascinating and funny anecdotes told him by our much-loved record shop staff so that when you visit you will feel like you already know the characters behind the counters. It is perfect for vinyl fans to keep with them on their travels around the country.

Notes: Slim, 44-page perfect bound, paperback containing four stories. Illustrated by Mary Thomas. These four stories were written while Allen was working and touring with the Cleveland band, Pere Ubu, and refer directly to those years. Previously published in The Cleveland Edition, The Re Records Quarterly and The Penguin Book of Rock and Roll Writing. Allen Ravenstine was born in Canton, Ohio in 1950. In 1968 his parents were killed in a car crash. He was a student at Ohio State University when students protesting the Vietnam War were shot at Kent State. All universities in Ohio closed, so he left Columbus, where he was studying English literature, never to return.

In the following years he worked with an EML analogue synthesizer and a Teac four-track tape recorder and in 1974 bought the Plaza, a ramshackle apartment building in Cleveland's inner city, which soon became the home of painters, poets, writers and musicians. In 1975, he co-founded the legendary Cleveland band, Pere Ubu in which he worked until 1988... leaving to become an airline pilot.

Taking up music again in 2012, he appeared with Robert Wheeler in the film 'I Dream of Wires', recorded two album length records, 'Farm Report' and 'City Desk'. In 2014, he released his first solo CD, 'The Pharaoh's Bee'. The critically acclaimed 'Waiting for the Bomb' followed in 2018. Allen lives in New York City with his wife Ann.

Of all the seminal albums to come out in 1991, the year of Nevermind, Loveless, Ten and Out Of Time, among others, none were quieter, both in volume and influence, than Spiderland, and no band more mysterious than Slint. Few single albums can lay claim to sparking an entire genre, but the Spiderland, all six songs of it, laid the foundation for post rock in the 1990s. Yet for so much obvious influence, both the band and the album remain something of a puzzle. This thoroughly researched book is the first substantive attempt to break through some of the mystery surrounding Spiderland and the band that made it.

Scott Tennent has written a long overdue look at this remarkable album and its origins, delving into the small, insular musical universe that included bands like Squirrel Bait, Maurice, Bitch Magnet and Bastro. The story, helped by in-depth interviews with band members David Pajo and Todd Brashear, explores the formation of Slint, the recording of Tweez and the band's dramatic move into the sound of Spiderland.

Notes: This is a brilliant exploration of Radiohead's game-changing album, looking at its place in the career of The World's Best Band with ten years of hindsight.

The Radiohead's Kid A never had a chance on paper. Not only did the band have the unenviable task of following up the near-universally lauded OK Computer, but Kid A didn't even have an official single or video. Neither did it help that the band largely abandoned rock-pop conventions for a sound that traversed glitch, free-jazz, modern composition and krautrock.

Rather than simply reinforcing Kid A's canonical status, Marvin Lin situates the album in the temporal, examining it from various philosophical and cultural interpretations of time in order to arrive at its political and social stakes. Why do you care how time is expressed through its aesthetic components like repetition, sampling and hybridization? Where does the album subvert our sense of time with songs like Treefingers? In which ways does it attempt to transcend time and with what implications? Time is perhaps art's biggest enemy, all human creations will be erased eventually, but it's through these various articulations that you are able to uncover some of the most interesting insights about Kid A.

Notes: As part of their successful 'Rare Mod' series, Acid Jazz have once again turned their hand to book publishing with 'Circles: The Strange Story Of The Fleur De Lys', Britain's Forgotten Soul Band. Following on from the number one bestselling biography of the Small Faces by Paolo Hewitt, this time, as a companion to the forthcoming Fleur De Lys EP 'The Two Sides of The Fleur de Lys' the label shines a light on one of the legendary and perhaps most unsung mod bands of the 1960s. The book charts the Southampton group's journey from humble beginnings to becoming the first British band signed to Atlantic Records. Names like Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Aretha Franklin and The Who weave in and out of the story and the result is a must for 60s fans, soulboy and mods as well as anyone with an interest in youth culture.

Notes: To many, disco seemed to have been born fully formed from the imaginations of John Travolta and the Bee-Gees, but the music and culture that would become known as disco was taking shape a decade before Saturday Night Fever, as the exclusive property of New York hedonists in members-only loft parties and disused warehouse spaces cum dance clubs.

Disco emerged from the fall-out of the Black Power Movement and an almost exclusively gay scene in a blaze of poppers, strobe lights, tight trousers, hysterical diva vocals and synthesized beats in the late sixties. Drawing on the music of Sly Stone and Parliament-Funkadelic and the ethos of pleasure-is-politics, disco was the first musical form to explore the relationship between the machine and the body and consequently, became the progenitor of house, hip hop and techno. As such, as a genre, disco radically re-defined the sensibility of the seventies to the extent where reactionary rockers felt the need to launch a paranoid Disco Sucks campaign at the end of the decade.

Featuring artists include Chic, Sylvester, Donna Summer, Larry Levan and Frank Grasso, as well as a discussion of the clubs, labels, fashions and trends that defined the period, the Turn the Beat Around illustrates how and why disco, the music that taste forgot, changed the face of popular culture for ever.

This is no straight forward chronological trot through the glitter balls and cocaine of a derided genre. Shapiro serves up a no-nonsense subjuctive look at the major cultural shifts in the U.S as well as the DJs and artists that made disco the vital link between the death of the sixties and the births of punk and hip-hop. He writes with a great deal of passion about the ground breaking turntablists that turned sound systems and dancefloors into artworks. Larry Levan, Tom Moulton, Francois Kervorian, David Mancuso, Nicky Siano and many more are deservedly praised for helping to create a movement out of the stagflated, run-down Big Apple. Shapiro's forthright opinions could grate if you disagree, I didn't. I think he gets it bang on every time. This is an important music book even if you are not keen on the actual music the scene spawned.

Notes: Trent Reznor rode into music mythology on "Pretty Hate Machine", powered by Futurist industrial pistons and covered in ice-spiked synth hooks shined by new wave robots. Then there was his voice. Whispered verses and screamed hooks before Kurt Cobain patented the formula suggested things teens weren't supposed to be thinking, but were. Reznor's brooding prince in PVC persona became the goth archetype that still pervades America over a decade on. Daphne Carr interviews dozens of NIN fans and gets to the heart of Reznor's very personal appeal.

Notes: Whatever happened to the record shops? Not long ago every town had one. Between 2004 and 2008 independent record shops were closing at a rate of one every three days. 'Last Shop Standing' looked if it was going to be an obituary to these great institutions. This new updated version, featuring lots of new anecdotes, looks at 2009: the year the record store fought back. With initiatives like Record Store Day, which attracted the support of artists all over the world, record shops staged the biggest and best comeback since Ali v Foreman.

New shops started sprouting up everywhere and vinyl sales rose by 33%. Graham Jones' 'Last Shop Standing' tells the story of Record Store Day and also lists all shops that have taken part. 'Last Shop Standing' features messages of support for independent record shops from Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, Joe Satriani, Damon Albarn and Chuck Berry amongst many others. This book champions the great characters that run record shops and explains to the public the problems they have faced. Graham also explains why he believes the record shops who have survived have a real future and why the public must support them.

The author, Graham Jones has worked at the heart of the record industry since the golden 1980s. Notes: The Letters to Emma Bowlcut, an epistolary novelette, collects 62 letters from a nameless protagonist to a woman he saw at at a party. The letters form the seduction, in sifting the loose, disparate details of his day-to-day, the desires, the frustrations, the joys. The self as depicted through emotional weather updates, social observations, anecdotes, advice and well timed punchlines. The Letters to Emma Bowlcut captures the sensual and esoteric qualities of letter correspondence. There is something in the time it takes the post to deliver and the physicality of the object that eventually arrives, that evokes an intimacy, a depth: a desire to be known and an opportunity to present oneself in the internal fantasy of every day's secret internal dialogue.

Over the course of 9 releases as Smog, Bill Callahan built an international audience for his musical fights and lyrical incites. For the past 3 years, he has presented his music under his own name to. His artwork, which has adorned the covers of all but one of his albums, has been distributed in the form of 3 sketchbooks (Women, The Death's Head Drawings and Ballerina Scratchpad and he has contributed his unique perspective to magazines over the years, but the Letters to Emma Bowlcut is his first published writing. As Bill continues to record and tour, playing concerts throughout Europe, Japan, North and South America and Australia, the Letters to Emma Bowlcut will be disinseminated among his ever-chaging and growing fan-base.

Notes: A great issue of the Jazz Critique magazine, one that features a wealth of rare records from the Japanese jazz scene of the fifties and sixties. The first part of the issue is done in discographical form at a level that features cover images, song titles, dates, and personnel for dozens of totally great rare grooves from Japan. Text is all in Japanese, as it is in the rest of the magazine, but as with other Japanese discographies, there's plenty here to hip you to some really great records.

Notes: Street art has taken over the world in recent years. Cities have been 'liberated' by artists who are as motivated by the drive to invent new forms of media as they are to create new images. "Art Of Rebellion" features the broadest possible variety of street art including flyers, stickers, spray can and stencil art, and a host of interesting hybrids that fall somewhere in between. Provocateurs such as Space Invader, Above, Lefunk, Milk, Fume, Hoernchen and East Eric use an amazing variety of techniques to create their own individual iconography in projects as crazy as bathrooms painted gold, battle tanks painted pink and cities plastered with pictures of toasters. The ultimate collection of worldwide street art this remarkable book leaves absolutely nothing sacred. Author Christian Hundertmark is founder of Munich based design studio C100, working for various clients in the sports and music industry.

Notes: The story of Jackson C. Frank is tragic. The victim of a school fire in his youth, struggling with homelessness and mental illness throughout his life, half-blinded in old age before his death in 1999, Frank met continuous obstacles. And yet he enjoyed a shining moment with the release of Jackson C. Frank on Columbia Records in 1965. The album would go on to be seen as one of the greatest folk albums of the decade - maybe of all time - and its opening track "Blues Run the Game" has become a standard covered by hundreds.

Jim Abbott's book is the result of years of research piecing together evidence, relations and apocryphal stories from Frank's life. It is also part memoir, as Abbott cared for Frank through the final decade of his life. Their friendship was fraught with difficulties, which Abbott portrays with the honesty of a journalist. In doing so, he draws a portrait of a uniquely gifted songwriter, blessed with talent and besotted by demons. At 250 pages, Abbott's memoir shows a flawed and caring individual whose struggle was best depicted in his songs.

Following the release of Jackson C. Frank: The Clear, Hard Light of Genius, Ba Da Bing will release three volumes of Jackson C. Frank: The Complete Recordings in early 2015, compiling work from throughout his life, including unreleased material.

Notes: Another of Ray Hurford's handy paperback books on reggae music. This one looks at this fascinating genre through the examining the producers, including Coxsone, Duke Reid, Lee Perry, Bunny Lee, Joe Gibbs, King Jammy, Winston Riley etc. as well as lesser known names such as Alvin Ranglin, Phil Pratt, Tony Robinson and Spider Johnson. Very informative.

Features over 100 producers, 400 albums, 100 photographs and 200 graphics.

Notes: Reggae music is a living music, and much of it's history is a mystery. It would be impossible for anyone to say that there are only X amount of versions to a rhythm, unless that rhythm was brand new. The only claim being made is that having checked over 1000 LP's and about the same amount of 7" & 12" this is the imformation that has been gathererd. The music available for checking starts in the ska era and goes up to the Ragga era 1988.

Notes: This is a rollercoaster, inside-story of life, love and loss with Joy Division. As co-founder of Joy Division, Peter Hook was the inspiration behind a band that would shape the course of popular music. He provided the propulsive bass guitar melodies of "Love Will Tear Us Apart", and was at the heart of the sound that came to define an era and inspire a generation.

In "Unknown Pleasures", he tells the story of that time; of the music, the madness, the band members and the other characters on the scene that made it the unforgettable, iconic time it was.

Notes: The book 'Last Shop Standing: Whatever Happened to Record Shops?' is the story of how the UK went from having over 2000 independent record shops in the 1980's to just 269 by 2009. Graham Jones was in the perfect position to witness their sad decline from the vantage point of a record company salesman who has travelled the length and breadth of the UK to sell stock to these shops. As he watched the tragedy unfold he decided it was important that someone documented their tales before the record shop went the way of the stamp shop, the coin shop and the candlestick maker.

He set off on a tour of the UK to interview 50 record shop owners to see why they had survived whilst a couple of thousand others had closed. These interviews are the basis of the book. Graham thought he was writing the obituary of the record store but Last Shop Standing became a celebration of these great cultural meeting places: a David and Goliath tale of stores managing to keep going despite the immense pressure from downloading and supermarkets.

In 2012 Last Shop Standing was made into a successful film featuring Johnny Marr, Norman Cook, Richard Hawley, Paul Weller, Billy Bragg and lots of record shop owners from the book. The film has been screened all over the world and the DVD was the official film of Record Store Day 2013. Recently, record shops have made an astounding comeback and we now have more record shops than back in 2009. This updated sixth edition of Last Shop Standing plains why. This edition also gives a comprehensive update on the original shops interviewed. Last Shop Standing has become a piece of social history. It is also a damn good laugh.

Notes: Felt, the British band started by Lawrence in Birmingham, released twenty records in the 1980s on the Cherry Red and Creation labels. Hailed by the press, Felt made its mark on the independent music scene in Britain, topping the indie charts in 1985 with the "Primitive Painters" single.

In "Ballad Of The Fan", JC Brouchard chronicles the story of Felt through their records and puts it in parallel with his own experience as a fan. He first followed the band from afar, before he met up with them in England, put on their first gig in France and tagged along with them on a European tour.

JC Brouchard is the identity bestowed in 1984 upon Pol Dodu by Alan McGee, the Creation Records founder, when he made him his spiritual advisor and that of his band Biff Bang Pow! JC had his own Creation single release with Biff Bang Pow! in 1986 and was celebrated by the same band with the 1987 single "The Whole World Is Turning Brouchard!". "Ballad Of The Fan" is the first book published by the "renowned eccentric archeologist from Reims", as "Melody Maker" once put it.

Notes: American folk legend Michael Hurley is considered a master of songcraft by fellow musicians and it is easy to see why. His songs can be highly eccentric, populated by werewolves, sign-painters, tea and whiskey-drinkers, pork chops and hot dogs, wild geese, intoxicated lovers and blue navigators, but above all, they always manage to be moving and funny. The perfection of his peculiar, personal and utterly unique oeuvre is even more apparent on paper and in print. The Words To The Songs Of Michael Hurley presents lyrics to 19 of his songs and marks the first time Hurley's lyrics have been published in book form. It includes a foreword by the music critic Byron Coley and a French version by Marie Frankland, winner of the 2007 John-Glassco Prize for translation.

All songs are calligraphed by the author. Michael Hurley (aka DOC SNOCK), is an American songwriter, reputedly born in 1941, whose songs have been seeping into the folk unconscious for almost 50 years now (including covers by Cat Power, Yo La Tengo, Espers and others). Hurley's melodies and lyrics take flight into a world of plenty, inspiring wonder and humor, sin and slowness, laziness and longing. His music is often coined as outsider folk. His hobo lifestyle indeed could be looked upon as eccentric, but it might be better to regard him as one of the last insiders keeping alive the traditions of the folk troubadour. Hobo-ing around the
country, making music since the days Bob Dylan first set foot in NYC''s Gaslight club, Hurley recorded his first album for the legendary Folkways label in 1964 and continued to release albums for Warner Brothers, Rounder or Devendra Banhart's Gnomonsong label. His mid '70s Have Moicy album was among the top ten for the decade selected by Rolling Stone. While many of his contemporaries are long past their prime (or deceased), Hurley's muse is still very much alive.
