Electro
  1. The Beat Box Boys - "Yum Yum (Eat 'Em Up)" (3:05)
  2. Teen Rock - "Set Me Free" (UB 7" dub edit) (4:28)
Review: This 7" double-header delves into the vast vaults of Bobby Orlando, a prolific New York producer whose muscular mutations of electro, Italo-disco, freestyle and Hi-NRG were popular in gay clubs around the globe. He specialized in "concept groups" - made-up acts fronted by session singers who were hired in to front the tracks he produced. Two of these concept acts are showcased here. On the A-side you'll find "Yum Yum (Eat 'Em Up)" by The Beat Box Boys, a stripped-back and slightly silly - but undeniably fun - electro workout from 1985. On the B-side you'll find an edited version of the Latin Rascals dub of fine 1985 freestyle cut "Set Me Free", which was credited to Teen Rock and bears some similarities to Orlando's early productions for the Pet Shop Boys.

Deep Dubstep
  1. Young Skeleton (4:13)
  2. Coroners (3:23)
Review: Fresh in the chem trails of his Bandulu release, the inimitable Bengal Sound crash lands back into our psyches with his disarming, not-of-this-world take on 140 music. "Young Skeleton" arrives just in time for Halloween, scaring the dickens out of us with its warped humanised tones, dusty atmospheres and distant chimes. "Coroners" takes us from the graveyard to the morgue... But with these hazy arpeggiated trinkles and eerie shimmers are we stepping towards the light or simply waking up? That's for you to work out.

Soul
  1. Bonnie Blanchard, Andy Aaron & The Mean Machine - "You're The Only One" (3:02)
  2. Andy Aaron & The Mean Machine - "Right On Time" (3:30)
Review: For their latest must-check rare soul reissue, German crate diggers TRAMP Records take us back to 1969 and the sole single from Philadelphia outfit Andy Aaron & the Mean Machine. A-side "You're The Only One" is a superb chunk of bass-heavy soul full of energetic drumming, fuzzy horn motifs, inspired lead vocals by Bonnie Blanchard and sax solos from none other than Grover Washington (then a young musician and member of the Mean Machine). Equally as potent is instrumental flipside "Right On Time", which is a riotous funk workout that boasts more lung-busting solos from an on form Washington.

Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. You're The Best (4:28)
  2. Train Of Thought (4:29)
Review: Many disco-era modern soul collectors regard, Larom Baker's "You're The Best", which initially appeared in 1978 on an impossible to find, single-sided 7" single, as one of the style's genuine "Holy Grail" records. It's good news, then, that Athens Of The North has secured the rights to reissue it, releasing the full studio version (rather than the shorter edit that was released all those years ago) for the very first time. It's a genuine gem, with Baker's deliciously breezy West Coast soul vocal seemingly floating over a killer backing track rich in hazy horns, bustling slap bass and crunchy Clavinet lines. Turn to the flipside for the more disco-minded "Train Of Thought", one of a string of recently discovered Baker recordings that form the basis of a forthcoming album of previously unreleased tracks.

  1. Lou Rawls - "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine" (Kenny Summit, Frankie Knuckles & Eric Kupper unreleased remix) (7:43)
  2. Kenny Summit, Frankie Knuckles & Eric Kupper - "Loving You" (feat Yasmeen) (6:50)
Review: Apparently made in tribute to the legendary Paradise Garage club some years ago, these two previously unreleased workouts are the work of Kenny Summit, Eric Kupper and the late, great Frankie Knuckles. Side A boasts the trio's near legendary (and previously unavailable) remix of Lou Rawls classic "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine". It's a wonderfully positive and life-affirming affair, with the three legendary producers wrapping echoing guitars, warming disco orchestration and Rawls' sublime lead vocal around a deliciously percussive Afro-house groove. The flip features another unseen and unheard gem from the vaults: a loose, groovy and positive soulful house wiggler featuring the seductive vocals of Yasmeen. Terrific stuff.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz
  1. You Find That I Got It (4:45)
  2. Mjuvi (4:49)
Review: The hardest-working man in West London is back! By now we've become accustomed to Kaidi Tatham offering up regular doses of soul and jazz-funk-fired dancefloor goodness, but even by his high standards "You Find That I Got It" is something special. Warm, woozy, groovy and full of intricate musical details - brief synth solos, subtle orchestration and so on - the A-side title track is a wonderfully sunny slice of instrumental boogie-soul. Tatham's world-renowned keys playing comes to the fore on the organic broken beat/jazz-funk fusion of "Mjuvi", a flipside cut that's almost as good as the exceptional title track.

Review: Max Cooper's latest album is undoubtedly his most adventurous and expansive work to date. It began life as a commission from the Barbican to produce a hybrid audio/visual piece that could be performed live and took "our obsession with the unobtainable" as its central theme. While the resultant piece is best experienced during one of Cooper's live performances, this album version is still stunning. Mixing neo-classical movements, Terry Riley style synthesizer minimalism, crackling experimental noise, melodic electronica and his trademark brand of emotive, soft touch techno, "Yearning For The Infinite" is a genuinely emotion-stirring sonic journey from an artist who continues to surprise and delight.

Review: If you're a minimal fan and don't know Yama Music, you've been sleeping. Their first three EPs flew off the shelves and into crates of heady DJs across Europe. Once again the eponymous Yama Music is or are behind the beats and it's forward thinking, no nonsense dancing music of the highest order. "Acisaronno" is proper tech house with delicate hi hats and steel plated drums making for a frictionless groove, while "Chinchilla Shuffle" is the sort of slightly wonky and oddball track that Craig Richard drops on the regular. Freaky, spaced out and atmospheric, tech house doesn't get much better.

Review: Since debuting in 2015, Yoshinori Hayashi has peddled his wares on a variety of labels, Jheri Tracks, Disco Halal and and Smalltown Supersound included. Here he returns to the latter label with a pleasingly heavy four-tracker. Opener "U" is an intergalactic electro workout laden with nasty, deep bass and glacial electronics, while "Cs" is a wonderfully lo-fi take on acid house that jacks harder than DJ Pierre after 24 cans of Red Bull. Over on the flip he layers ghostly vocal snippets, alien chords and rich bass over another jacking drum track on "I", before dropping some filthy analogue techno science on the sparse, spaced-out pulse of "Sr".

"X Is Wrong" offers up plenty of digital only material that has never been on vinyl before and is an essential addition to your shelves as a result. It finds the Jamaican icon laying down some fresh rhythms while exploring notions of love, the bible, jah, rastafarianism and much more. The beats roll hard, with plenty of contemporary studio effects and instrumental lines embellishing each one with an original edge.

Review: Daniel "Red Rack'em" Berman, has been on a real roll in the last few years. He's found a sweet spot between house and disco that layers up functional loops with party starting samples and is designed to work floors into a frenzy. He does that once more here with the slightly drunken disco stomper of "WYBES" which will have you waving your hands like you just don't care. If the a-side soundtracks a raucous Christmas party, the flip is more heady thanks to the melodic house subtleties of "E" and slowmo funk and squelchy bass of "Stevie".

Review: Under the clever Even Tuell alias (say it quickly out loud if you don't get the gag), Paul Rollmann has been a valued member of the Workshop family since 2009. Here he returns to the Hardwax affiliated deep house imprint with his first release of any sort for almost five years. Rollmann is in fine form throughout, opening with an alluring combination of crunchy, off-kilter machine beats and Music From Memory style ambient melodies (the wonderfully melodious "Rise March Mellow") before opting for a dustier and more lo-fi sound on pastoral techno workout "Highway Daydreams". "Domingo Nap" is a wonderfully spaced-out journey into trippy ambient territory awashed with delay-laden electric guitar motifs and fuzzy sub-bass, while closing cut "Sharp & Shallow" is a defiantly left-of-centre romp through glassy-eyed electro.

This is heavy hitting roots rarity produced by Dillinger in 1983, and here Jarrett is in fine form as he muses on self empowerment. The bass cuts deep and the tropical synths bring the sunshine into this most carefree groover. Flip over for "Rebel", all lit up with slick effects and a tinkling piano line that tugs at the heart strings.

  4. Til I Found You (dub) (5:40)
Review: For the last 18 months disco and boogie legend Leroy Burgess - owner of the most distinctive voice in the game - has been touring Europe with a band of Lyon-based musicians known as Saving Coco. It makes sense, then, that he would eventually go into the studio with them to record some new material. The results are impressive. The jaunty, Clavinet-heavy brilliance of "Work It Out" is reminiscent of some of Burgess' best boogie-era work with The Fantastic Aleems and fittingly comes accompanied by a Dub mix rich in piano and synth solos. "Til I Found You" is a slap bass-propelled exercise in good grooves and even better vocals. It, too, is backed by a stripped back but musically expansive Dub mix.

  1. Jingo (12' mix) (7:12)
  2. Wono (Yoruba Soul mix) (8:14)
  3. Won (Pocz remix) (5:22)
Review: London-based Japanese DJ/producer Koichi Sakai debuts with an EP that boasts a fine cover of one of Santana's most percussive moments, "Jingo" - a track later re-imagined as disco gold by Salsoul artist Candido. Sakai's version, featuring vocalist Afla Sackey, is a little more laidback, summery and Afro-centric than either of those famous versions, with a thickset analogue bassline being overlaid with jaunty guitar riffs and lashings of sweaty percussion solos. Over on side B, you'll find two versions of the deeper and sweeter "Wono": a languid, percussive and Afro-centric take by Osunlade and a Pocz remix that joins the dots between Balearic electronica and Afrobeat.

Deep House
  1. Wondering (7:15)
Review: In 1996, Dreamscape's Ed Marshall donned a new alias, Aplomb, and delivered the first fruits of his new project to New Age House Records. Only one track was ever released on a limited label promo, "Wondering". World Building's Ari Goldman, who previously put out a compilation of Marshall's work as Dreamscape, is a fan and has decided to rescue it from obscurity via this single-sided 12". The track itself is hard to accurately pigeonhole, combining as it does dense, carnival style drums, female scat vocals, warm bass, dreamy deep house chords and synthesizer flourishes reminiscent of early '80s jazz-funk. Either way, it's a sunny and groovy chunk of obscure house positivity that's well worth a place in your collection.

Review: Hodini is back on the ever reliable Wolf Music for his second EP. The Cologne-based DJ also moonlights as one of Germany's leading underground hip hop producers under the alias HulkHodn, therefore he brings elements from this background into this unique five tracker. In "WOLFEP 053", he dusts off long forgotten cuts, all sampled with that MPC chopped graininess and blending lo-fi vocal sound bites with deft jazz loops to give a distinct, textured edge to his work. From the dusty late night deepness of "Velved Groove", to the slo-mo Moodymann vibes of "Special Shout Out" and the lo-slung, jazzy kinda somethin' that is "Where's The Wine", Hodini delivers smokey deep house music with an undeniably urban flavour.
