Review: In many ways it's hard to get a fix on U2's 90s period. It's as though they folded time between their breakthrough 80s albums and the comfortable middle age period post the turn of the millennium. However, Zooropa remains a wildly exciting album which saw Bono and his buddies weren't afraid to mess with the formula and embrace what was happening outside of their mainstream rock bubble. There are some surprising risks taken and yet their gargantuan song craft remains undiminished. On this 30th anniversary pressing there's also some bonus remixes tucked onto side four, bringing Oakenfold's equally supersized Perfecto sound into the mix.

Review: This special 50th Anniversary Edition of the late great David Bowie's soundtrack to his iconic Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars show comes on double gold vinyl for the first time since it was originally recorded. Despite Ziggy being Bowie's most loved alter ego, he retired it much to the chagrin of fans (and band members, who had no idea it was coming) live on stage at London's Hammersmith Odeon. The farewell speech he gave is included here along with a medley of 'The Jean Genie'/'Love Me Do' and 'Round And Round' featuring Jeff Beck and plenty of other Bowie classics from that era. A real moment of rock 'n' roll history, then.

Review: Rock Hall Of Fame nominee Todd Rundgren is an accomplished songwriter and ever-innovative producer. Here he links up with someone just as talented in the shape of Sparks, who is an eclectic and quixotic creative and pillar of the modern musical world. 'Your Fandango' (served up here on a limited coloured vinyl 7") is the third single from Rundgren's forthcoming Space Force album. It's a wall of sound with space rock riffs, gauzy textures and freaky vocals. After this comes the album with guests spots from Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo and Muslim hip hop artist Narcy amongst much more.

Review: Brighton troubadour Michael Rosenberg vaulted himself into the popular consciousness with 'Let Her Go', the biggest hit of 2012, yet rather than let this become a millstone around his neck, he's simply forged forward, elaborating on the heartfelt style that made his name whilst never losing the basic emotional connection at his music's core. This marks his seventh studio album to date, recorded in New Zealand at Neil Finn's Roundhead studios, and replete with the same kind of easy-going yet soul-searching ditties that marry lyrical campfire aesthetics to tasteful orchestral arrangements.

Review: Whilst it's now impossible to view Leonard Cohen's final album outside the context of his passing, the fact of the matter is that this lugubrious sage had been ruminating on the nature of endings and goodbyes for much of his near half-century of artistry, and it's hard to think of a figure who's been quite so eloquent and wise in this endeavour. 'You Want It Darker' seem may a fitting way to bow out, but moreso it bears testimony to the fact that Cohen's questing spirit remained undimmed right until the last, and his travails in the exploration of faith, romance and the human condition were never to lose their finesse and bite.

Review: Not to be confused with either the album of the same name nor a prior 7" single with different music on it, this limited cut contains four outtakes and demos recorded by T. Rex's Marc Bolan in 1966. Later in 1981, backing instrumentals were recorded and added to Bolan's vocals, under the watchful eye of his trusted former manager Simon Napier-Bell. From 'Mustang Ford' to the later hit 'The Perfurmed Garden...', Bolan sounds all but overdubbed here; he is at one with each rollicking, slick backing, freewheeling and near yelling on this rock altarpiece.

Review: The mercurial and magical Jeff Buckley departed this realm leaving a severe shortage of actual material, thus this collection of early demos - recorded in 1993 in advance of his debut album proper 'Grace' - marks a cherished opportunity to experience his soulful intensity and otherworldly powers as an interpreter of song. The majority of 'You And I' consists of covers, traversing all the way from Sly & The Family Stone to The Smiths, yet all imbued with his uniquely raw, intuitive and captivating approach. The world will never see the like of Jeff Buckley again, which makes 'You And I' a document worth savouring.

Review: Originally born when members of Thin Lizzy decided to reform, obviously opting not to use the name without the involement of the late Phil Lynott. Forming under the Black Star Riders banner instead, as a means of being able to perform new material on a nightly basis without the added pressure of folk simply anticipating a rendition of, 'Emerald', or, 'Dancing In The Moonlight, they've gone on to deliver a slew of retro-fitted rock anthems without relying too heavily on nostalgic tropes. Their fifth full-length, 'Wrong Side Of Paradise', marks the first project with current drummer Zak St John, as well as the last to feature guitarist/songwriter Christian Martucci. While also serving as the first to be recorded without founding member Scott Gorham, cuts like the momentous standout, 'Better Than Saturday Night', keep positive affirmation, thunderous riffs and serene hooks at the forefront, and are a definitive reminder that behind-the-scenes alterations don't always amount to the art being sacrificed.

Demo versions of 'Heroin' and 'Pale Blue Eyes' both make appearances, while seven further completely unreleased and unheard songs also come to fruition. The earliest is a doo-wop serenade recorded in 1958, when Reed was just sixteen years old.

Review: "Noted for being "scared shitless" at the prospect of their upcoming Woodstock gig in 1969, Crosby, Stills Nash & Young were still fledgling performers at this point, this being only their second live appearance as a supergrounp. An evening gig, many of the festival attendees were on their way out; those who stayed for CSNY didn't regret it, though. Careening through originals like Still's 'Judy Blue Eyes' and Paul McCartney's 'Blackbird', the band later caused jaws to drop with the mid-show rollout of Neil Young. Prepare for lovingly remastered psych funk shoulder-swayers on this limited LP and CD bundle.

Originally released in 1980, the album made the top ten and sold over three million copies with little radio play and not even a top 40 song. The album is also ranked #36 in the top 100 Heavy Metal records of all time. Released on limited numbered 180 gram at 45RPM Audiophile SuperVinyl with the UltraDisc One-Step process spread across two records. Review: The title of Nick Lowe's solo record has a great backstory: at the time, he and label head Jake Riviera wanted to mess with journalists so in every interview at the time they gave the record a different title. Jesus of Cool was one which they knew wouldn't work for the US release so that became Pure Pop for Now People, while Wireless World was another one banded about. That faded away and was forgotten about as the other two titles went on to be used. But now, 40 years later, the record is reissued under that third title but with the original album tracklist.

Review: This album was brought together as a look back at some of Paul Weller's lesser-known tunes. The collection dates back to 1991 and takes in many solo recordings across six sides of vinyl. Amongst the inclusions are plenty of rare B-sides and remixes as well as live recordings, none of them appearing on any of his most successful solo albums. It's a mix of rarities that fans are sure to lap up as they travel through 20 years of Weller magic, all compiled by the man himself.

Review: You'll have to go pretty far to find anyone who doesn't crack a smile at the ever-so-slightly nasal tones of Tom Petty. The late-Earl of heartland and blues rock originally unveiled this record as his second solo full-length, back in 1994, and it earned triple-platinum sales for very good reason.

At times carefree and driven by a celebration of abandon as much as any time signature ('You Don't Know How It Feels', 'Wildflowers') in other moments reflective ('Don't Fade On Me'), and occasionally redemptive ('Crawling Back To You'), it is quite literally packed with the gamut of human emotion. And some very handy guitar work. Here extended (hence the All The Rest bit in the title), you also get an additional four discs of bang for your buck, including rare home recordings, live takes and alternative versions. We'll leave you to explore those, though.

Review: With all-time rock anthems like 'Won't Get Fooled Again' and 'Baba O'Riley', it's perhaps no wonder Who's Next is The Who's best selling album, but it's no commercial compromise. Songs like 'Behind Blue Eyes' are as raw and visceral as the foursome ever were, even compared to much of today's indie music. The 50th anniversary reissue package at large has dug up 89 unreleased demos and rarities for the completist collector, but this vinyl edition concentrates on the album itself and is all the more powerful a listen for it.

Review: Who's Next is probably the Who's biggest album, serving as a great introduction for new would-be fans. Suprisingly, though, it was their fifth, and was a whopping international seller despite its ambitious conception as a multimedia rock opera, first made under the working title Lighthouse. The blueprint for the next generation of stadium rock, the likes of 'Won't Get Fooled Again' and 'Baba O'Riley' are quintessentially epic songs, and have seamlessly translated into today's modern rock & pop cultural landscape. Now reissued 50 years later, it comes incredibly as the eighth edition of the album, featuring a humungous 155 audio tracks in total, 89 of them being unreleased demos and rarities.

Review: The Who's 50th Anniversary edition of Who's Next is being released in multiple formats and chief among them is this relatively short and succinct 4xLP version. Though four sides of vinyl isn't usually thought to be "short", this is a minimal incarnation of the reissued album, compared to the juggernaut CD and Blu-Ray box set which contains over 155 original audio tracks on it. This version is as comparatively minimal and monolithic as the 2001: A Space Odyssey monolith referenced on its front cover, though it's not still without its nice extra-album bonuses, 'Pinball Wizard' and 'Naked Eye' included.

Review: Three studio albums in, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds have managed to distance themselves from their frontman's legacy enough to become a household name in their own right. 'Who Built The Moon' sees Gallagher continue to assert his famed song-writing prowess whilst pushing his band in new directions with bluesy-rock anthems, smoky and atmospheric interludes and the satisfying electronic pop of tracks like 'She Taught Me How To Fly'. It's this willingness to explore and experiment that makes this album his most ambitious to date, and the finest post-Oasis work that either of the Gallaghers have produced.

Let's face it, White Blood Cells is the moment when The White Stripes really broke the mould. It's a continuation of Jack and Meg's garage rock aesthetic as fine-tuned over two previous albums, and wholeheartedly a straight up rock 'n' roll album. But the elements are so perfectly primed it's impossible not to rank this as one of the greatest long form outings of this century, so far. And we're not alone - Rolling Stone even reckons it's among the best LPs of all time. Pity the fool who disagrees.

From the racing 'Fell in Love With A Girl', to the beguiling mystery of 'The Union Forever', 'I Think I Smell A Rat''s meld of mariachi riffs and mosh stomp and the emotional piano closer 'This Protector', to the innocent acoustic joy of 'We're Going To Be Friends', this is a masterclass of songwriting and arrangement, tracks that evolve, perplex, surprise, and - most importantly - entertain.

Review: Not be confused with UK rock act Quill featuring the legendary Jeff Lynne (ELO, Black Sabbath, The Move), Swedish stoner rock heroes The Quill have been an active entity within the realms of Scandinavian hard rock and metal since the early 90s. Returning with their highly anticipated 11th full-length and follow up to 2021's Earthrise, the current locked in line up of original vocalist Magnus Ekwall, who would depart the band in 2007 before rejoining in 2016, along with Christian Carlsson (Cirkus Prutz) on guitar, Roger Nilsson (Spiritual Beggars, Arch Enemy, Firebird) on bass, and drummer Jolle Atlagic (Hanoi Rocks, Electric Boys, Firebird), are at a stage where crafting the most sprawling variety of metallic magic is their primary concern, with Wheel Of Time conjuring elements of stoner rock, doom metal, psych, prog and even saccharine dollops of melodious AOR for all you Dad-Rockers out there.

Review: It can be something of a surprise to know that Young Gun Silver Fox hail from modern-day London, as the sound of this album couldn't be more '70s-tinged and Californian if it was sporing sideburns, reefer-in-hand and discussing the Watergate scandal. Redolent of the like of Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers and even The Eagles, 'West End Coast' thankfully has chops and talent to stand as much more than a mere retro curiosity or museum piece - ditties like 'You Can Feel It' and 'In My Pocket' channel vocalist Andy Platts' falsetto croon, heavenly harmonies and AM radio production to considerable satisfaction for all.

Review: The Vinyl Champ are currently on a re-issuing roll, retroactively reviving some of the most impactful live shows of the 20th Century which nonetheless have yet to see the proper light of day, not least after the turn of the millennium or in vinyl form. Here they shift their focus to Bon Jovi, whose Wembley 1995 appearance, as part of their These Days tour, heard the stadium rockers reach the zenith of a mammoth 131-show tour (yes, you heard that correctly). All the Jovi-al hits, and with no misses either, come hurtling your way.

Review: On this unique compilation, various artists pay homage to the iconic Irish rock band U2, reimagining their timeless classics and turning them into their own., from the dreamy ethereal sounds of Heaven 17's 'With or Without You' to the pulsating electronica industrialism of Front Line Assembly. The Mission UK's haunting rendition of 'All I Want Is You' evokes a profound sense of longing and despair, while The Electric Hellfire Club's industrial-infused 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' captures the raw energy and political urgency of the original. Rosetta Stone's ethereal 'October' provides a meditative interlude, and Die Krupps' throbbing dance interpretation of 'Numb' adds a sinister edge to U2's dance track. The album culminates with Silverbeam's soaring anthem 'Where The Streets Have No Name' featuring Ann Louise, a fitting tribute to the band's enduring impact on the global music scene. Tribute albums rarely shine as bright as this one does.

Review: We Have Dozens of Titles by Gastr Del Sol is a treasure trove for fans, offering a glimpse into the experimental post-rock pioneers' journey from their Bastro roots to their groundbreaking work as Gastr Del Sol. This collection, curated from their 1993-1998 recordings, shows their evolution into sonic explorers, pushing the boundaries of post-rock with influences from musique concrete and free improv. The unearthed CBC recording from Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville in 1997 is a highlight, featuring ethereal versions of familiar tracks like 'The Seasons Reverse' and 'Blues Subtitled No Sense of Wonder.''The live rendition of "Onion Orange' is a revelation, with Jim O'Rourke's kosmische synth waves intertwining seamlessly with David Grubbs' intricate guitar work. Additionally, the inclusion of rarities like 'The Harp Factory On Lake Street' and tracks from various compilations adds depth to the collection. Each track, whether a live performance or a studio recording, has been meticulously mastered or remastered by O'Rourke, enhancing the listening experience. We Have Dozens of Titles not only fills in gaps in Gastr Del Sol's discography but also exemplifies their innovative approach to music-making.

Review: Gastr del Sol might have gone their separate ways some 25 years ago, but they have recently taken the time to dig back into their fine archives. As a result they now serve up an alternate view of their superb, boundary breaking and genre busting run between 1993 and 1998 with a title box set, We Have Dozens Of Titles, on Drag City. Returning like a reverberating bolt from the blue, this album reignites the essence of the group and immerses listeners back into the whirlwind of their transformative era. It comprises previously uncaptured studio recordings and meticulously preserved unreleased live performances that all offer a captivating glimpse into the band's journey.

Review: British DJ and record crate digger Paul Hillery gets put in a position of serious responsibility - curating and weaving together the latest compilation from BBE Music. Once The Polyphonic Spree's tour DJ, and the man behind the YouTube channel and mix series 'Folk Funk & Trippy Troubadours', if none of that means anything let's just say this album takes psyche seriously. Well, as seriously as anything psychedelic ever is.

With a track list boasting some cult favourites from the scene - Mike Baumann & Tom Huntington, Alex Crispin, Airborne - there's plenty here to pique interest while perusing the back sleeve. Dive in, though, and you find a trove of treasures, from hazy, early-1970s tranquility to innovative digital experiments created during the 2020 lockdowns. A real journey through the ages, genre acting as guiding rod.

Review: While David Bowie's talents were many, it was his skills as a musician, a composer and a performer which were, and indeed remain, the most celebrated of the great man's gifts. But Bowie was a self-taught intellectual too, a thinker of unparalleled originality and, quite probably, the best-read rock star of all time. He was also a talented speaker, an enormously absorbing conversationalist and someone you just know you could have had a damn good chat with, if only the opportunity had arisen. When these faculties are combined, as they are throughout the recordings here, some of the most stimulating archive film available on the boy from Beckenham is revealed. This double DVD set concentrates on David Bowie's spoken word video recordings, collating as it does more than 3 hours of the Thin White Duke in interview, in conversation, in conference and when simply having a bit of a natter! Intriguing and enthralling throughout, this set features both classic and rare footage, which all at once make it a must-have compilation for Bowie fans the world across.

Review: Weirdo guitar visionary Frank Zappa released his acclaimed fourth LP 'Waka/Jawaka' in 1972, after the phrase appeared to him miraculously on an ouija board. A pinnacle of jazz fusion, near-classical orchestral influences and prog rock, it serves as a lesser-known sequel-ish to the generally agreed classic Hot Rats. It's also a shining example of time signature-core, with the moustached axe mage modulating all manner of tempos like it's nobody's business, also setting a high bar for what would eventually become post-rock in the process.

Review: If anybody thought QOTSA's previous offering '...Like Clockwork' indicated a band trying out new ideas, they're making far greater leaps this time around. Die-hard fans might be a little confused by the enlistment of Mark Ronson as the album's producer, perhaps even more so by the strong influence on Josh Homme of Ronson's ubiquitous 2014 hit 'Uptown Funk'. The outcome of this surprising collaboration proves to be a heady blend of the band's usual desert-rock sleaze and a crisp, infectious and floor-filling sound. This is an album to move to, and this new direction of dancefloor focus makes the blistering fuzzbox riffs and contortion-inducing solos sound even more cool and confident than ever.

Review: It had been five years since fans had received any new, original material from Marianne Faithful by the time Vagabond Ways landed, and it's safe to say the record was worth the wait. Containing both her own work, and re-interpretations of songs by the likes of Roger Waters, Elton John, and Leonard Cohen, if the track list is impressive then the delivery is astounding.

Continuing in her neo-cabaret persona, Vagabond Ways is a theatrical and dramatic piece of work to say the least. Packed with emotion and stage presence, to call this rock would be reductive. More a journey into a kind of surreal, experimental pop realm that's filled with mystery, beauty, and unease, this is an excellent example of how a record can invoke incredibly vivid imagery of your own devising.

Written and recorded in collaboration with her long-time bandmate and husband Nicke Andersson (vocalist/guitarist for hard rock Swedes The Hellacopters and drummer for legendary death metal entity Entombed), V continues the band's unique coalescence of accessible, grooving AOR emboldened by elements of classic doom metal and proto-psych. Complete with macabre, gothic lyrics delivered with Platow's incomparable, sultry, almost Wiccan cadence, the project offers a hypnotic dirge of horror delivered with a gentle hand.

Yumi is a vocal coach and former singer who was active from the late 70s and through the 80s before opening her own Murata Yumi Vocal Training Room in 1991 and teaching ever since. This long-player was a later one out of the seven she released in all and is one of her most popular as it mixes up fusion, new wave, funk, pop and jazz across synth sounds. These are enjoyable and sophisticated sounds from this talented vocalist.

Unlimited Love is the twelfth full length from the legendary rockers, with the old school line up of Chad on drums, flea on bass, John on guitar (for the first time since 2006) and Anthony leading the vocals still intact, while old producer Rick Rubin is also back on board for the first time since 2011. It finds them wanting to "shine a light in the world, to uplift, connect, and bring people together" and features songs "reflecting our view of the universe."

Rick Rubin is in the production seat, and overall it's the sound of the Chili Peppers doing what they do best, with all the classic ingredients. From the epic anthem 'Black Summer' to moody ballad 'Not The One' and the playful funk of 'Poster Child', there's everything you could want from the band as they stride into their fourth decade of active service.

There are many glorious overs here, all of which are very much done in true Pearl Jam fashion - with passion and energy. The collection also demonstrates quite how wild and eclectic the band's taste must have been. As such the collection tells you plenty about their enormous knowledge and love of music past and present. There is plenty to love here, so dig yourself in deep and lap it up.

They managed to blow all expectations out of the water last year with their 'Trouble's Coming' release and now the new album does it again. It has big riffs from Mike Kerr, vocals that range from raw and rock ready to more tender and soulful and grooves that can be hyper aggressive or more comforting. It's a real roller coaster ride that finishes with a rather surprising piano ballad. But then again, what would a Royal Blood record be without a surprise.

It's inspired by The Bourne Identity book and spent over six months in the US Pop Charts and was the band's only No. 1 hit in America when it hit the top spot on the Billboard Top Album Tracks chart. The band's guitarist George Kooymans wrote the tune and shares vocal responsibilities with Barry Hay. It's as big as pop rock gets with its soaring chords and big drums, and on the flip is 'When The Lady Smiles' which is another classic 80s anthem.

A collection of broadcast tracks from Top Gear, Sounds of the Seventies, and The John Peel Sunday Concert are included, and all sound gritty, growly, raw and vital. Among the highlights are versions of Like A Rolling Stone and When My Mind's Gone, which the release notes argue are "rare-as-hens-teeth", and we're not in position to argue, while the take on 'What'd I Say' feels soaked in enough spilt whisky and blues you could probably get loaded on the fumes alone. Ultimately, though, there's no point picking individual parts here. Instead, think wall-to-wall reasons why the Hoople were such a rare breed.

Review: Quiet revolution seems to be the driving force of this sophomore set from lauded trio London Grammar. Lyricist and vocalist Hannah Reid has expanded her subject matter a little, though angst and love lost are still her major concern. Her delivery, too, is a little gentler, something presumably party inspired by the band's warmer and dreamier musical outlook. There are a few heartfelt sing-alongs, of course, but for the most part Truth is a Beautiful Thing is a more considered and voluptuous excursion.

Review: In the dramatic twists and turns of her career, Stevie Nicks overcame adversity more than a few times to assert her place as a true icon of American rock music. In the wake of her departure from Fleetwood Mac and her battle with Klonopin dependency, Tom Petty encouraged her to hunker down and write the songs which would become her 2001 comeback, Trouble In Shangri-La. Coming from a place of sheer honesty and with the clarity of her regained health, it was a critically acclaimed return to form which vindicated her self-doubt and reminded the world of her incredible voice and unforgettable songwriting.

Review: Deep Purple are often mentioned in the same breath as the main innovators of heavy Metal, like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, but as this collection of radio transmissions from 1968 shows, they have a much closer relation to the good old fashioned funk than either of those rivals. Ian Paice's drumming on opening track 'Speed King' makes the track much more suitable for dancing to than headbanging, and we challenge you to hear their version of Billie Joe Royal's 'Hush' without thinking of The Charlatans' 'The Only One I Know'. With a generally relaxed feel about this cover version-heavy selection - Hendrix's 'Hey Joe' and The Beatles 'Hush' also get the Purple treatment - this is a different and altogether more accessible slant on the legends that you might not have even guessed existed.

Review: Pink Floyd's early era is celebrated on this double LP set, Transmissions, It was a time when they recorded some well regarded sessions for FM radio broadcast and was around legendary albums including A Saucerful Of Secrets - the swansong of the increasingly ill Syd Barrett, replaced by David Gilmour during its making - Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother and Meddle. Plenty of highlights for fans old and new can be found here, with raw and lo-fi recordings of tunes like 'Daybreak' next to heady melodies and acoustic steaming on the much more organic and spring-day like 'Nightmare (Cymbaline)'. It all comes sounding great across two limited edition slabs of clear vinyl.

Review: What can really be said about David Bowie that hasn't already been said about David Bowie? Throwing caution to the wind, let's try this: The Man Who Fell To Earth wasn't just a musical titan and visionary. He belonged to a small club of artists who could never be satisfied simply releasing good music. Nor was the fact they influenced generation after generation reason to rest on laurels.

Instead, along with the likes of Bjork and Massive Attack, Bowie created entire worlds for his work to exist in. Places we step into through portals and lose ourselves exploring. Records, movies, artwork, fashion, videos, books, these different mediums combine to offer a universe waiting to be found. Transition: On Air 1967-1971, a series of radio appearances, offers an extended opportunity to spend time in the formative days of that galaxy-building.
