  1. Playin' With Fire (4:53)
  2. Playin' With Fire (Daniel Maunick remix) (6:27)
  3. Shining (6:30)
Review: Originally active around the turn of the century, Difusion are back in action with a mission to champion real songwriting in the deep house scene. "Playin' With Fire" rides a funky disco groove and works around some seriously catchy vocals, while Daniel Maunick dubs the track out and rides the filter to deadly effect. "Shining" rounds the EP off with a sweet, sensitive jam that strikes the kind of melancholic tone that wistful dancefloor memories are made of. Once again the vocals lift to the track to another stratosphere of heartfelt expression - this is sure to go down a storm with the late summer crowd.

Review: If you're in the mood for some summery sounds tailor-made for sun-kissed pool parties and lazy afternoons on the beach, Future Disco's latest compilation could be just the ticket. You get a disc containing unmixed tracks for your DJ sets, plus a non-stop mix CD to help pass the time while your skin turns a lovely shade of red. Musically, there are tons of high quality baggy Balearic disco-pop (LUXXURY, Scavenger Hunt and Future Disco's "Another Lifetime"), dub disco influenced grooves (Soulwax remixing Tendts, the low slung strut of Lowheads' "Seven Afro Mood"), dreamy deep house sexiness (Henrik Villard, Moon Boots) and evocative nu-disco haziness (the Italo-influenced thrust of 16BL's ace "You Are High"). More importantly, the quality threshold remains high throughout.

Review: Thomas Berg's Soundscape Versions presents the third instalment on sublabel Mystic Versions with four unknown cuts by different artists across the globe, produced and performed using all analogue hardware gear. Sublime dub techno experiments captured in all their glacial and cavernous intensity, from the deep minimalist groove of "A1", the thumping delay-drenched reduction of "A2" to the housey and uplifting feel good vibes of "A4" with its jazz-bar loops. It's about quality over quantity on Mystic Versions and the wait has most certainly been worth the while.

Review: Life and Death continue to serve up brilliantly unpredictable releases, with this new one that brings together American DFA stalwart Juan MacLean with the UK's Me Me Me label head Man Power. On offer here is the pounding tribal house workout "Crescendo" which will hypnotise you with its polyrhythms until the track reaches an epic climax. This is followed by an edit from label boss DJ Tennis of "Excuse Me Daddy" on the flip, and closing out the EP is the majestic and mentalist journey down into the vortex that is "Praise The Toad" - a track that absolutely nails that L&D sound you've all come to know and love.

  1. Move Your Seat (6:39)
  2. Think Twice (6:55)
  3. Just You (6:59)
Review: Joe Corti has had a breakthrough 12 months, with releases landing on Better Listen and his own China White. Bringing more of that sweet, disco tinged house music to the second volume on his label, Corti strikes a heady mood on "Move Your Seat" with a mixture of swirling Philly string samples and looped up elements that should set the dancefloor alight in that most tender of ways. "Think Twice" is on a similar tip, albeit with a choice run of dreamy trumpet coursing through the track. "Just You" has a slightly techier edge, but it's embellished with the kind of keys that will appeal to fans of Glenn Underground. Classy stuff from a rising talent.

Review: Church founder Seb Wildblood may only be six years into his production career, but he already has an impressive slew of EPs and singles under his belt. "Sketches Of Transition", is the South London producer, DJ and label boss' long-awaited debut album and arguably his most musically expansive and on-point set to date. Largely warm, gentle, summery and sunrise-ready, it sees Wildblood drift between sumptuous Balearic grooves ("Twenty Eight"), sumptuous neo-soul ("Thought For Food"), liquid deep house ("Small Talk"), dusty-but-toasty workouts ("Bahn"), ultra-deep synth-pop (the Andras & Oscar style goodness of "Amelia") and impeccable ambient tracks capable of making the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end ("One For Malcolm").

  3. Watermelon Woman (Francis Inferno Orchestra Augur Sacrifice dub) (5:36)
Review: If you enjoyed Yu Su's brilliant EP on Second Circle earlier in the year - and, let's face it, who didn't? - there's a rather high chance that you'll enjoy her first outing on Ninja Tune offshoot Technicolour. "Watermelon Woman" is a superb chunk of bass-heavy house music positive - an inventive and hugely enjoyable fusion of unfussy drum machine rhythms, sampled tribal drums, toasty bass, dubbed-out effects, stargazing electronics, fluttering flutes and jazzy motifs that have just the right amount of breezy Latin flavour. The original version comes backed with a hazy and laidback Dub rework and a boisterous, off-kilter remix by Francis Inferno Orchestra that layers rubbery sounds and heady vocal samples above a skewed tribal house beat.

  5. Pontchartrain - "Don't Change It Up" (5:43)
  6. Goddard - "Almasti" (6:11)
Review: With such a star-studded line-up of old and new talent involved, it's little surprise to find that De La Groove's fourth vinyl release is seriously good. It's that good, in fact, that there's no space to go into each and every highlight. Instead, we'll point you in the direction of some of our personal favourites. Check first the breezy and soulful US garage revivalism of Art of Tones' impeccable "So Sweet", before turning your attention to the dreamy, vibraphone-laden deep house sexiness of Cody Currie's "As of Yet (featuring Joel Holmes)". Grant Nelson's "In The Dark" is a fine slab of late '90s style UK garage, while Goddard's "Almasti" sounds like a nu-disco era riff on Pepe Bradock deep house classic "Deep Burnt".

  2. (Vi Vi) Vicious Games (Drums dub) (5:11)
  3. (Vi Vi) Vicious Games (dub) (7:58)
Review: Given that acid revivalists Paranoid London have yet to put a foot wrong, it's no surprise to find that "(Vi-Vi) Vicious Games" is another absolute belter. It's taken from the duo's forthcoming album and features sometime Posthuman collaborator Josh Caffe channeling his inner Robert Owens and Jamie Principle over a retro-futurist backing track. In its full length, the track brilliantly combines Paranoid London's jacking drums and thrusting acid bass with dreamy chords and just the right amount of glassy-eyed melodic flourishes. It sounds like a classic TRAX release given the Paranoid London treatment, which I'm sure we all agree is a very good thing indeed. If you're in the mood for something even sleazier and more driving, the Bam Bam-inspired Dub has it covered.

Review: It's been a while since we heard from the Cobblestone Jazz boys and given their massive influence over contemporary house and techno, it's always a pleasure to listen to their truly singular take on dance music. The Matthew Jonson-led outfit return with an EP for the Itiswhatitis label, the original birthplace of Jonson's beats. "Northern Lights" is classic Cobblestone, where an ultra compressed kick meanders amidst calculated drips of sound pouring mathematically from every angle. "Drawn From The Side Of Crime" is a little more chirpy, its sounds bleeping away with greater intensity and freedom. It's a must have for fans of the group, recommended!

Review: We can confirm that Adam "Admin" Wickens is not only a hugely talented DJ and producer, but also a thoroughly nice chap. Here he makes his bow on Better Listen with a three-tracker packed to the rafters with warmth, soul and groove. Check first A-side "Adjust Your Love", a sample-fired workout that effortlessly joins the dots between disco, deep house and star-kissed jazz-funk, before turning your attention to the chopped-and-screwed samples, toasty sub-bass, languid beats and echoing piano snippets of "Easy Love Dub". The Bristol-based producer rounds things off in fine style via "Horizons", a slightly bouncier house cut that makes great use of some bluesy piano samples and another stoned, glassy-eyed bassline.

  4. Ahora Si (D Tiffany remix) (6:47)
Review: Butter Sessions latest must-check release comes courtesy of Melbourne-based rising star Furious Frank, whose recent EP on Paper-Cuts was particularly impressive. "Ahora Si" is similarly inspired, with the young Australian producer placing Ivy Barkakati's "Sueno Latino" style whispered vocal over a bold, alluring blend of jangling dream house pianos, rugged acid lines, sunrise-ready chords and loose-limbed analogue beats. He provides his own dream house style interpretation (the brilliant "Frank's Sunrise Mix") before inviting Ivan to give his take on the track. He adds some tribal percussion whilst retaining the cut's inherent dreaminess before Canadian producer D. Tiffany re-imagines "Ahora Si" as a bass-heavy chunk of UKG/breakbeat house fusion.

Review: House and techno badboys Paranoid London are proceeding the release of their second album with a bunch of singles from it. First up is "Cult Hero" featuring Simon Topping - one of many guest vocalists on the full length. It's a bristling acid house cut with tight, corrugated drums and relentless 303 mania ripping up the groove. Topping's deadpan vocals are layered over the top and bring to mind the more anthemic work of Depeche Mode. "Club Mix" is even more caustic and kinetic, while closer "Slow Mix" strips back everything but for the lunching drums and demonic vocals of Topping.

Review: Christopher Rau is a true stalwart of the German deep house scene, with releases on a who's who such as Smallville, Office, Mule Musiq and Die Orakel over the years. FME Hustle is the Hamburg native's new one, where he can count Berlin urban house heroes Money $ex to his list of credentials. Expect the same soulful and dusty deepness from the man, as he's been consistently pumping out for close to a decade from his new home in the capital. From the broken emotive groove of "Jetlag Alter", the neon-lit lo-fi hiss of "Uebelst Bekorbt House Mix" or the textured/dub-laden tech house of "Drama - Chamber" Rau further demonstrates exactly why he's still one of the most highly respected producers within the genre.

Review: Over the last 18 months, Secretsundaze duo Giles Smith and James Priestley have proved adept at delivering house records that refuse to kowtow to convention. Their latest effort, "Gigantic Impossibly Large", is a fantastic example of this, with each of the pair's four mixes offering a noticeably different vibe. The EP-opening "10AM Tripp" version is a mid-tempo shuffler full of loose-limbed drum fills, classic ambient house melodies and glassy-eyed spoken word samples, while the "NYC Dub" re-imagines the cut as a cross between Raze's "Break 4 Love" and one of Bobby Konders deep and breezy Nu Groove-era cuts. The "OG Version" fuses ambient chords and hypnotic dub disco drums, and the "B2 Jam" interpretation is horizontal head music of the highest order.

Review: Under the 2XM alias, super siblings the Murray Brothers have thus far proved to be rather good at fusing heady, smoky deep house with the dreamy chords of ambient house and a variety of interconnected influences. They're in fine form on this EP, too, effortlessly moving between two-step/dream house fusion ("Dancing Styles", which surprisingly reminded us of late '90s Irresistible Force Records), eyes-closed jazzy deep house bliss (the fluid electric piano solos, rich chords and dusty beats of "Doing It"), ultra-deep, Floating Points-esque soulfulness ("Gentle", featuring the evocative vocals of Neil Macleod) and jaunty, synth-sporting dancefloor haziness ("Sorry That You Love Me").

Review: Small repress of the Modern Sun Records founder and experienced jazz-wise producer Marc Friedli AKA Skymark. A-side "Flying Fantasy" originally appeared on the Spanish producer's 2016 album "Resistance Sonore", but is here featured in instrumental form for the first time. If anything, it's better than the original version, largely because we get to revel in Friedli's mazy Fender Rhodes solos, rubbery jazz-funk synth bass and loose-limbed, West London style broken beats. You'll find plenty more jaunty jazz-funk vibes and liquid electric piano solos on B-side cut "Rhodes E Serenidade", which first slipped out way back in 2015. 2. 4AM (6:23)
Review: Little known fact: the coloured kiss marks on Puss' white label releases are made by "real live humans". Or at least that's what label bosses Kornel Kovacs and HNNY say. That's pretty much the only information about this release, which appears to have been made by producers with the initials "RD" and "KF". "I Don't Dance I Make Money Moves" places Cardi B's hip-hop/R&B vocal over a warm and melodious backing track that sits somewhere between snappy electro and Balearic deep house. It's summery as hell and twice as hot! "4AM" on the other hand is sludgy, sleazy and percussive, with Afro-house style rhythms and chunky bass underpinning jaunty steel pan melodies. In other words, it's a tasty tropical house workout.

  1. Hypnotising (6:52)
  2. Nara (6:51)
  3. Roots (9:28)
  4. Roots (reprise) (6:40)
Review: Just 4 The Beat's first release of the year was well worth waiting for. It comes from Eastern Europe's Urban Haven, who is now based in London but clearly takes great inspiration from deep and soulful Chicago house masters like Glenn Underground and Ron Trent. His first ever EP is an impossibly classy one, and "Roots (Reprise)" is a glorious highlight that starts with luxurious synth puddles and a romantic, conversational sax line. After a three minute build, you sink into a Latin flecked deep house groove of the highest order. This is as musical as house gets and is, unsurprisingly, already big with Mike Huckaby and Kai Alce.

Review: After a series of well received albums on 100% Silk and HNYTRX, Maya Bouldry-Morrison returns with her first album in two years, and the first on the T4T LUV NRG imprint she set up with life partner Eris Drew. It's a thrill-a-minute affair rooted in her love of turn-of-the-'90s rave culture, with the eight showcased tracks variously mixing elements of breakbeat hardcore, Belgian techno, dreamy deep house, ambient techno, ragging acid and the kind of psychedelic club fare that was once all the rage within California's LSD-fuelled free party scene. In fact, as a soundtrack to a full moon party on a remote "SoCal" beach, "Resonant Body" would sound phenomenal, with the inspired ambient number "My Body Is A Powerful" offering a fine accompaniment to the inevitable morning comedown.

  2. Mix & Fairbanks - "Shergar's Revenge" (5:58)
  3. Shee - "Me, You, Us" (6:53)
  4. Purple Ice - "Adeus" (7:02)
Review: According to the hype sheet we have to hand, the "Home Turf EP" is House of Disco's first multi-artist extravaganza for two years. There's plenty to get the juices flowing throughout, from the bounding bounciness of LPM's rap-sampling disco-house cut "Get With It", to the impeccably warm and sun-kissed jazz-house vibes of Purple Ice's "Adeus". In between you'll find the rolling, synth-heavy warmth of Mix & Fairbanks' deliciously loved-up "Shergar's Revenge" and "Me, You, Us" by Shee, a chunky sample-house number full of swirling strings, looped guitar riffs, hazy chords and righteous spoken word samples.

Gently (Baby Ford/Dazmos mixes) (140 gram vinyl 12")

Deep House
  1. Gently (Baby Ford & Dazmos Backroom mix) (9:25)
  2. Gently (Baby Ford & Dazmos Frontroom mix) (8:38)
  3. Gently (3:18)
Review: Baby Ford and Dazmos take the limelight on this first release on Nice 1. We Are Syd's original "Gently" is a mellow downtempo roller featuring choice vocals from Shea Seger, but it's the remixes here that get pride of place. Ford and Dazmos lock into an understated drum machine funk draped in hazy pads on the A side "Backroom Mix", while on the flip they push the club elements to the forefront. Riding the rhythm section with intent while still retaining the smoky spirit of the original, the pairing come up with an impeccable "Frontroom" club cut that should nestle comfortably into the bags of all deep digging house heads.
