Funk
  1. James Brown - "Funky Drummer" (extended Breaks Special edition) (4:48)
  2. Jimmy Smith - "Root Down" (extended Breaks Special edition) (3:40)
Review: By now we should all know what to expect from the Breaks & Beats "Extended Breaks Special Edition" reworks, namely stretched-out versions of classic funk, soul and disco cuts that give extra priority to DJ-friendly drum breaks. This particular edition offers up revisions of two colossal cuts. On the A-side the un-named scalpel fiends get to work on James Brown's "Funky Drummer", stretching out the Godfather of Soul's impeccable original to a touch under five minutes. Over on the flip you'll find a tidy version of Jimmy Smith classic "Root Down" that starts and ends with mixable loops of the track's insatiable groove.

  1. Terminator (4:21)
  2. Rough Cut (4:31)
Review: Kid Frost's "Terminator" might well have turned 35 this year, but it still sounds fresh and from the future. Often spoken about as a perfect track by real electro heads. It has sleek bassline sounds, a slick DMX beat and flawless Oberheim synth-pads all finished off with a self-built vocoder vocal. Kid Frost's MC work here is as good as any you will hear and helps this tight title track stand head and shoulders above many others. Flip-side "Rough Cut" is just as essential. This tidy 7" is limited so grab one before it's gone.

  1. Apache (4:56)
  2. Bongo Rock (2:38)
Review: Back in 2011, Shawn Lee recorded an album in tribute to the legendary Incredible Bongo Band - whose extra-percussive cuts and cover versions played a key role in the early development of hip-hop - under the name the Incredible Tabla Band. Here, two of the more sought-after cuts from the hard-to-find set appear on seven-inch for the first time. Lee's take on "Apache", in which Indian instrumentation, Hammond organ licks and a touch of psych-rock fuzziness are thrown into the mix with incendiary results - is a guaranteed dancefloor hit. That said, his "Tabla Rock" take on "Bongo Rock" is arguably even better, and certainly a little more revolutionary in terms of the sounds you hear. It's naturally rooted in bongo and tabla-powered funk, but attractively veers off script at key moments.

  1. What Am I Gonna Do (Ryuhei The Man Miami 45 edit) (4:05)
  2. What Am I Gonna Do (3:46)
Review: Recently, dusty-fingered Japanese DJ/producer Ryuhei The Man has offered up tidy re-edits of some suitably obscure - but rather good - gems from the disco era. He's at it again here, putting his stamp on a lesser-known string-drenched disco cut from Reid, Inc's hard-to-find 1977 debut album. His version extends the original by 40 seconds or so, introducing an extended guitar intro and breakdown, both of which increase the impact of the main song when it kicks back in. The band's sultry, soulful and essential original version is tucked away on side B.

  1. Be With Me (Ryuhei The Man Miami 45 edit) (3:06)
  2. Be With Me (2:41)
Review: Japanese turntablist, crate-digger and producer Ryuhei The Man has been on fine form of late, offering up fresh revisions of some seriously dope old soul, disco and jazz-funk releases. Here he continues the trend by delivering a neat "45 Edit" of Miami Soul man Milton Wright's 1977 track "Be With Me". His version tightens things up a little, moving from groove-based sections before introducing Wright's superb vocals and the sing-along chorus. He's also been busy on the EQs, too, effectively re-mastering it a touch to suit modern dancefloors. You'll find Wright's breezy original - all glistening guitars, hazy horns and jaunty bass guitar - in full on the flipside.

  1. It Ain't Hard To Tell (3:44)
  2. It Ain't Hard To Tell (instrumental) (3:44)
Review: Some fans argue that "It Ain't Hard To Tell" is the best production on Nas' legendary "Illmatic" album. Large Professor certainly did his job in making it pop: the beat is killer, and the whole thing is driven by a Michael Jackson sample of "Human Nature". As if that weren't enough, samples from Stanley Clarke and Mountain are layered in to perfection and the smooth, sweet rolling beat draws you in over and over and Nas' creamy delivery finishes it in style. Flip over for the instrumental and bask in the glow of it all. Classic.

  2. Bobby II (Caserta & Lucky Ry 80's mix) (4:45)
Review: Studio surgeons Caserta & Lucky Ry have been busy revisiting a dance floor classic that they now serve up as two different remakes. Once again it is a blue-eyed gem that forms the source material for the pair to impress with their own versions. The "70's Mix" is a laid back soul gem with big horns and smooth, smoochy vocals that will get any bar grooving. Over on the flip, the "80's Mix", has bigger drums and more tiny percussive textures bumping things up while the vocal is passed through a vocoder for that perfect future-retro feel.

  1. Crate Breaks Three (5:02)
  2. Crate Breaks Four (5:20)
Review: Released late last year, Dirty Drum Productions first "Crate Breaks" seven-inch offered up two sides of cut-and-paste drum breaks - with gaps in between - for turntablists to play around with. This second salvo follows a similar blueprint. What you get is a series of celebrated (and in some cases lesser-known) breakbeats lifted from rock, funk and soul records, EQ'd and re-mastered for maximum loudness. These breaks - arranged into loose "tracks" as "Crate Breaks 3" and "Crate Breaks 4" - are clean enough to either sample, or use during turntablist routines. If you buy two copies, you can even "double up" with them and create fresh backing tracks for the MC of your choice.

  2. Upsetters - "My Girl" (3:14)
Review: Busty Brown's early reggae cover of the Temptations' smash hit "My Girl" from 1964 is presented here in all its glory. It's a glorious makeover that has soaring trumpets filled with optimism, deep cut drums that wriggle and rumble nonstop, as well as Brown's buttery, authentic vocals up top. Legendary dub outfit The Upsetters then take care of an instrumental on the flip side that goes a little slower and more purposefully about its business. It's not often that a cover outshines the original but in the case of this one, that might be what's happening here.

Review: "Better Herring" has become a big money tune from the Pioneers and it was last available as part of the mega-comp "The Story Of Trojan Records". Before that, the title tune had only been released in England on 7" on Attack in 1970 under the Soul Directions alias but thanks to Boss Records, this lo-fi bit of ska and retro soul is now available to DJs and dancers once more. "Mama Look Deh" on the flip is a much more laid back tune, with a happier outlook, gorgeous guitar riffs that seem to grow ever quicker and tight drum playing to get you moving.

  2. Fight Against Babylon (version) (3:08)
Review: Eric Clarke is best known as one of Jamaica's most outstanding drummers, as well as being the older brother of big time star Johnny Clarke. "Fight Against Babylon" was released right at the peak of his powers and this reissue marks the first time it has been readily available since then. It's an archetypal cut with Clarke's trademark drums sounding superb and scoring vocal odes to the one and only Babylon. The version is a freaky one that makes the vocals sound like a distant apparition, while also stripping things back to that essential riddim.

  1. Organized Pleasure - "Tropical Stumble" (3:02)
  2. Satin Wall - "Dans Les Profondeurs" (4:01)
Review: While it's become fashionable to reissue obscure post-punk and wave recordings from the turn-of-the-80s, it would be unfair to accuse Stroom of bandwagon-jumping - after all, they've been serving up new editions of quirky, unheralded European records in this style for some time. Their latest must-have seven-inch brings together barely-known tracks from two Belgian bands who were active on the country's punk scene in the late '70s and early '80s. On the A-side you'll find "Tropical Stumble" by Organized Pleasure, a feverish fusion of doom-laden electronics, Joy Division guitars, skittish drums and multi-lingual vocals that never outstays its welcome. Side B boasts another rare cut from 1981, the low-slung, dub-influenced post-punk murkiness of Satin Wall's "Dans Les Profondeurs".

Review: Irie Ites Music always come correct when you need some heavyweight sounds to feed through your sound system. This latest one sees Dubmatix lay down a stepper's riddim with a deep bassline that rumbles on for days. Kazam Davis and Exile Di Brave both feature to drop some raggedy arsed chants on "High Life", then things get more colourful and psyched-out on the flip thanks to a knob-twiddling and vital dub mix from Dubmatix. Bass doesn't come much heavier than this one, so snap it up and get it dropped.

Review: Step into the future of dub with this swaggering slice of goodness from Paco Ten. It continues in the fine tradition of Old Hard Bread who had a top year in 2019 and come good again now. "Come Together (Digikal Ruff Cut Dubplate)" piles up the drums and hits into a clean and crisp riddim that's finished off with impassioned vocal cries and wails that melt into futuristic synths. The version on the flip is a subtly different affair that makes just as big an impression.

Review: Birmingham's Murray Man will be well known to contemporary dub lovers for his slow and steady stream of singles since 2001, but also his Mellow Vibes label. It's a perfect name for what he does, which is take you on deep and pillowy dub excursions laced with lazy hits, long legged drums and his own conscious vocal deliveries. Ram Goat then takes care of a version that strips things back to basics. Xylophone melodies roam free and endless reverb sinks you ever deeper into the dub.
