Review: Heroes Just For One Day is a superb document of just how extraordinary David Bowie was in the live arena. In 1990 he was taking new paths to rejuvenate his creativity and before he embarked on it fully he headed out on his 1990 Sound+Vision Tour which was to be one final goodbye to many of his most famous back catalogue hits. It's a superb swan song that was captured in all its glory and is now presented here on multicoloured marble vinyl. As far as greatest hits go, it's as great as they get.

Review: This extra EP came as part of a follow-up box set released in the November of the same year that David Bowie released The Next Day, his post-ironic album that cemented the starman's return to the limelight after a mild heart attack in 2004. Almost a decade of recovery and recording went into the album; this tidbit of outtakes and rarities from the album features everything from a collaboration with Steve Reich and James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem) to a new version of 'I'd Rather Be High'.

Low (by Hugo Wilcken)
Cat: 428424 Rel: 01 Jan 90 • View all Music books
Notes: "One day I blew my nose and half my brains came out." Los Angeles, 1976. David Bowie is holed up in his Bel-Air mansion, drifting into drug-induced paranoia and confusion. Obsessed with black magic and the Holy Grail, he's built an altar in the living room and keeps his fingernail clippings in the fridge. There are occasional trips out to visit his friend Iggy Pop in a mental institution. His latest album is the cocaine-fuelled Station To Station (Bowie: "I know it was recorded in LA because I read it was"), which welds R&B rhythms to lyrics that mix the occult with a yearning for Europe, after three mad years in the New World. Bowie has long been haunted by the angst-ridden, emotional work of the Die Brucke movement and the Expressionists. Berlin is their spiritual home, and after a chaotic world tour, Bowie adopts this city as his new sanctuary. Immediately he sets to work on Low, his own expressionist mood-piece.

Heroes (Tokyo Dome, Tokyo, Japan, 16th May, 1990 FM radio Broadcast) (4:39)
Review: Sometimes the best records hinge on a simple premise, and here's one. Why not present two scintillating versions of one of David Bowie's eternally cherished classics on a seven inch? 'Heroes' was only six years old when Bowie performed it in 1983 at the Montreal Forum, and the quality of the recording and performance on this version is truly something to savour, not least thanks to the power of the backing vocalists. Flip the record over and fast-forward seven years to hear Bowie performing to many an adoring fan in 1990 as he closes out a show at the Tokyo Dome. Both tracks were broadcast on radio an so have been bootlegged plenty, but now you can hear them in gorgeous high fidelity, just the way they should be.

Review: The one and only David Bowie was an untouchable talent no matter what he was doing - recording music, inventing personas, acting in films, speaking on futurism, or playing live for radio and TV. Now, this five CD boxset celebrates that fact with more than 80 tracks included and spanning all of his discography between the years of 1967 and 1995. The Broadcast Collection on Cult Legends incudes everything you want it to and more from 'In The Heat Of The Morning' (more than one version is included) to 'Unwashed & Somewhat Slightly Dazed' and plenty of other gems.

Review: Bowie headed out on the worldwide Glass Spider in support of his album Never Let Me Down in May 1987, joined by legendary guitarist Peter Frampton. He show was ambitious even by his own high standards, with theatrical overtones and choreography based around its theme of 'Rock stars vs Reality' and although it was criticised at the time as overblown and pretentious, it's since become recognised as influential. With a mix of current and classic tunes, this album catches Bowie In full concert flow.

Review: A yawning chasm has been left in rock music by the untimely departure of David Robert Jones, making documents such as this one all the more poignant and powerful, all the more so for it recording the last tour he embarked on. Here, with a crack selection of musicians including longterm sidemen Mike Garson and Earl Slick, he essayed classics like 'Life On Mars', '80s tunes like a beautifully rearranged 'Loving The Alien' and newer material 'Reality' itself with enough charisma and style to fuel fifty live shows. There'll never be a star that burns brighter than Bowie, and he's on scintillating form here.

Review: David Bowie's legacy lives on years after his death - that is if it hasn't even grown since the great artist's sad passing. This unique live album was recorded in 1990 at the Milton Keynes Bowl and saw the cute singer performing songs on his Sound+Vision tour. This gig was the first leg of his return to Europe so found him full of energy and vitality and turning in superb tunes like 'Rebel Rebel', 'Ashes to Ashes' and 'Life on Mars'. All of this was in front of a massive 60,000-plus crowd and it still makes for spine-tingling listening all the years later.

Review: Through the many dimensions of his stellar career, David Bowie left a sprawling trail of broadcast performances which often offered unique insights into some of his most cherished songs. Laser Media have gathered together some of the finest examples of these radio broadcast performances for this lavishly presented box set. Given the focus on the 70s and 80s and the fact they still manage to fill out six CDs, you get some notion of the scale of the musical icon's incomparable archives. Classics like 'Rebel Rebel, 'China Girl' and 'Changes' are all present at least once, but here you get unique versions distinct from the evergreen studio takes embedded in our collective memory.

Review: This recording of the Philadelphia Orchestra performing Sergei Prokofiev's 1936 story and orchestral score Peter and the Wolf was recorded in 1977 and was originally released in 1978. The role of the narrator on the recording was initially offered to both Peter Ustinov and Alec Guinness who both turned it down, before David Bowie agreed to take on the role, supposedly as a Christmas present to his son. On the B-side is another equally as charming piece of recent classical history, Benjamin Britten's Young Person's Guide To The Orchestra as narrated by Hugh Downs.

David Bowie/The Rebels - "Revolutionary Song" (4:42)
Marlene Dietrich - "Just A Gigolo" (3:34)
Review: Here's something to get Bowie fans hot under the collar: a first worldwide pressing of the Thin White Duke's "Revolutionary Song", his only contribution to the soundtrack of 1978 West German flick "Just A Gigolo", in which he also starred alongside silver screen legend Marlene Dietrich. The song was recorded with a local band of musicians hastily dubbed "The Rebels" and sees Bowie in classic crooner mode, adding his distinctive vocals to a jangly, largely acoustic number that's effectively a folksy take on waltz. Over on side B there's a chance to enjoy one of Marlene Dietrich's last ever recordings: an atmospheric cover of 1930s cabaret standard "Just A Gigolo" which ended up being the movie's title track.

Review: Tin Machine II is the second and final studio album by Tin Machine. It was rebased in 1991 by Victory Music and marked the last time Bowie fronted and toured with the band. After this he focused on his solo career but the album quietly, in the background, continued to pick up fans, praise and an increasing reputation. It's often cited as one of the best lost albums of the last millennium and is packed with strong tracks that power along on big, angular guitars with Bowie's vocals soaring up top. This is the first time the record has been on vinyl since its initial rase and comes on limited edition coloured wax.

Review: Tin Machine II was first released by Victory Music in 1991. It was the second and last studio long player from Tin Machine and was followed by a tour. Once it was done, the band's legendary frontman David Bowie went back to his solo career and never looked back. Over the years, the album has take on cult status with Uncut magazine once calling it "extraordinary" and placing it in their list of 50 Great Lost Albums. It is a must-have record with plenty of pure-Bowie moments such as 'baby Universal' and singles like 'You Belong In Rock N Roll,' which did well in the charts at the time.

Review: During the U.S leg of his 1995 Outside tour, David Bowie was supported by Nine Inch Nails. Trent Reznor and company not only opened the shows, but also joined forces with the legendary musican on joint performances of some of his songs. Now, some 24 years later, a recording of one of these legendary collaborative performances has finally been released. It's hugely evocative and atmospheric, with many of Bowie's great songs - particularly "Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)", "Hallo Spaceboy", "The Heart's Filthy Lesson", "The Man Who Sold The World" and "Under Pressure" - benefitting from Nine Inch Nails' low-end grunt and razor-sharp guitars.

Review: The more distance there is from Bowie's passing, the more his legacy seems to grow - not that it was ever in doubt in the first place. The creative maverick and musical chameleon had more different chapters than War & Peace and Like Some Cat From Japan captures one of them, namely his West Berlin period in the mid-70s. It spawned his cult Low and Heroes album and saw him work often as a prouder and musical director for Iggy Pop, before heading out on a frankly unbelievable 78 date tour across four continents over the course of the year. The final show was in Japan and was broadcast live across much of the world. This is a selection of the best cuts from that gig.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Pearl Jam, Billy Idol, Patti Smith, Pete Townshend, Bonnie Raitt and Cowboy Junkies all played, as did a certain David Bowie. They all played acoustic sets taken from the David Bowie back catalogue and an impromptu version of the Coasters' 'I'm A Hog For You Baby' also feature to a great reception. David Bowie & Trent Reznor Interview (10:39)
Review: "I don't know where I'm going from here, but I promise it won't be boring," David Bowie famously quipped at his 50th Birthday concert in Madison Square Garden. That was 1997, and sadly we can now look back at the years between then and now as the last the icon would enjoy, although given the pantheons of unreleased material, music and other, we still have more than his legacy alone to learn from. He certainly kept his word, then, not least by opting to work with Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails, a band that found inspiration in myriad styles and sounds, from Human League to Pink Floyd, carving out a 'industrial electronic rock' niche for themselves. In addition to tours and one-off shows, recordings of their collaborations are remarkable, generating fresh wholes from the enormous sums of these parts.

It was recorded on his Hours tour to support his 21st studio album of the same name, and was the last he did for the EMI sub-label. It was the first full album to be made available by a major artist for full internet download, a full two weeks before the physical release. The album makes use of many instruments and took Bowie away from electronica. Guitarist Page Hamilton played in the tour as did Mark Plati on lead and rhythm guitars, Gail Ann Dorsey on bass guitar, Sterling Campbell on drums, and Mike Garson on keyboards. This set was recorded in December 1999 at the London Astoria for FM broadcast.

Review: In the wake of his untimely passing, it can be hard to work out which of his many eras and personae to indulge in, yet this essential document of radio sessions and fascinating live material covers one of the most exciting - that era in which this almost objectionably talented ingenue was first marking out his pathway to stardom - from the swinging '60s mockney strains of his earliest hits, through the heavy vibes of the Man Who Sold The World period, the elemental whimsy of 'Hunky Dory' and the world-conquering Ziggy Stardust, this is a fascinating travelogue of four years in which Bowie took enough artistic chances to last a lesser artist four careers, and almost all of them paid off. Watch out for a charming cameo from John Peel here also.

Review: In 1997, to celebrate David Bowie's 50th birthday, the Thin White Duke was granted a BBC Radio special. It featured nine new versions of some of his favourite songs, all of which were recorded during the rehearsals for a celebratory show in New in late 1996. Happily, these recordings have now been made available for the very first time via ChangesNowBowie, a kind of alternative greatest hits collection. Much of the material is stripped-back and pared down, with Bowie delivering either lo-fi rock revisions (see 'Repetition' and the rip-roaring 'White Light/White Heat'), semi-acoustic translations ('Shopping For Girls', 'Aladdin Sane' and 'The Man Who Sold The World') or slightly orchestrated interpretations ('Quicksand'). It's Bowie as you've never heard him before, and that's got to be a good thing.

Review: It's true that more than a few eyebrows were raised when Earthling was first released way back in 1997. Critics, in particular, were not particularly impressed by David Bowie's efforts to incorporate elements of drum & bass within his sound. In hindsight, though, it was pure Bowie; ever the musical chameleon, he simply wanted to try something new. As this reissue proves, for the most part the iconic artist got it right, delivering an album that used skittish D&B breakbeats to emphasize the angry, dark subject matter of its' songs (an effect heightened by the Nine Inch Nails feel to many cuts). While Earthling was far from Bowie's best, it arguably sounds stronger now than it did when it was first released. He always was a far-sighted innovator, of course.

David Bowie & Morrissey - "Cosmic Dancer" (live) (3:48)
Morrissey - "That's Entertainment" (3:19)
Review: A live curio from the brief time that Bowie and Morrissey toured together that sees the two legends joining forces for a cover of T-Rex's 'Cosmic Dancer'. It's a fairly sparse arrangement, mainly dominated in musical terms by Boz Boorer's jangling acoustic tones, but obviously that does leave plenty of room for two of the most recognisable voices in the business to work their magic. A slick studio take of the Moz tackling The Jam's 'That's Entertainment' inhabits the flip side of what is surely a 7" to get diehards fans salivating.

Review: To mark a half century since its initial release, Parlophone has decided to offer-up a new anniversary version of David Bowie's 1970 album The Man Who Sold The World, reissuing it under the Thin White Duke's original intended title, Metrobolist. As Bowie fans will tell you, it's a significant album for a number of reasons, not least because it was arguably his first classic set. It marked the first time he worked with guitarist Mick Ronson, for example, and was produced by the man who would go on to sit behind the studio desk on most of Bowie's best albums, Tony Visconti. The latter has remixed and remastered all bar one track for this reissue, giving new life and vibrancy to an already excellent album.

Not one but two new versions of the album hit the horizon, pitted side by side. One comes in the form of a half-speed remaster, and the other in the form of a picture disc.

Review: Everyone has their favourite Bowie, of course, but Ziggy Stardust has a special place for all and sundry as it marks a noticeable shift in Bowie's sound from Hunky Dory into the fabulous, glam rock 70s era. The classics are so iconic it's almost surreal to consider them in the context of their original presentation on this album, but from 'Starman' to 'Suffragette City' there's no end to the songwriting rock n' roll perfection Bowie achieved here. There's not much more that needs to be said about such an important record, but this newly half-speed remastered version is not to be sniffed at for those who like to hear the music with the best possible fidelity.

'Black Tie White Noise' marked the beginning of his '90s era, and saw him reunite with Let's Dance co-producer and writer Nile Roders (Chic) as well as the guitarist for Ziggy Stardust, Mick Ronson. Dreamy and art-rocky, this album might be described as Bowie's loungiest. It's best suited for steamy cocaine nights in stopover penthousesl croony drawler funk for the Bowie-Boeing business class.

Review: The late, great David Bowie's reputation only seems to grow and his legacy improve as the year following his death pass by. Buddha of Suburbia was his 19th album all the way back in 1993. It's one of his more rough around the edges affairs and was a soundtrack for Hanif Kureishi's exemplary dramatisation of his book. It finds Bowie exploring all sorts of sounds that go right back to his roots in partnership with Erdal Kizilcay with David Richards. 'South Horizon' is a dinner jazz cut, 'Strangers When We Meet' is classic Bowie pop and these are just two of the highlights.

Strangers When We Meet (5:07)
Review: Parlophone are embarking on a mammoth Bowie reissue campaign. 'Outside' was another artifact of the artist's "industrial" '90s era. Unlike 'Earthling', it segwayed neatly between techno and dreamy art rock. For example: the self-titled track is a meditation on time via reverb-drenched band instrumentation, but is suddenly augmented by sampled breakbeats at the halfway mark. 'We Prick You' is similarly industrial, mumbly and weird, yet also just as catchy; this is Bowie's ode to outsider music, made in a weird spate of recording sessions wherein the artist vowed to commit a series of "art crimes".

Review: Parlophone are embarking on a mammoth Bowie reissue campaign. 'Toy' was released posthumously in 2021, but was a miraculous feat, in that it spanned songs that were written as far back as 1964, and recorded in 2000. The intention behind the album was to rehearse and record the songs before releasing them as quickly as possible; it was later shelved, however, due to financial and production hell. Finally released after Bowie's passing, it presented a truly sentimental, naive and straight-talking Bowie feel, his best crack at art rock via dream pop.

Review: Parlophone are embarking on a mammoth Bowie reissue campaign. 'Hours', from 1997, followed up the industrial epic 'Earthling', and its front cover quite literally depicts Bowie laying a prior incarnation of himself to rest, like a regenerated Doctor Who. Unlike the dour and grim soundscapes portrayed in his earlier albums from the era, this one brings with it a soft ambient pop sound, nighly sounding like something between J-pop, Lamb and Smith And Mighty. It's certainly Bowie's most atmospheric and trip-hoppy album, and rightly features acoustic backings, Mellotron, and angelic vocals from Holly Palmer.

Parlophone are embarking on a mammoth Bowie reissue campaign. 'Earthling' was the British pop starling's take on rock via drum n' bass and/or techno, coming as one of the classic emblems of 1990s "industrial" David Bowie. In our opinion, the best Bowie there ever was (the blond spiked hair, the earrings, the bad-boy chic...) made this album in a spate of deep inspiration. Bowie's take on acid house with 'Law', or his NIN-adjacent 'I'm Afraid Of Americans', constitute undoubtable, buzzing electronic gems.

The occasion is marked with this special edition on a limited picture disc with new insert and a poster. Frankly, the music still speaks for itself and doesn't need fluffing up, as it remains one of Bowie's most admired works. The first single on the album, 'Changes', had very little success upon the time of release but eventually grew into one of his most iconic singles. Other big moments like 'Life On Mars?' still sound great, too. This one lands a day before what would have been Bowie's 75th birthday, and is a fitting tribute.

Review: It almost (almost) feels pointless to pitch why you should buy Moonage Daydream. After all, David Bowie was one of the 20th Century's best selling and most influential artists. And that legacy continued through the early-21st, when he represented an increasingly rare breed of visionary artist capable of building entire worlds. He straddled mainstream popularity and experimentalism with ease. So, you're probably going to pick up a copy of this on sight and spec alone.
Nevertheless, some context may help. 'Moonage Daydream' is, of course, the title of one of Bowie's most enigmatic and defining tracks, which would go on to form the basis for the concept album The Rise & Fall Of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars. Now it's also the name of a new documentary about the life and times, and incredible work, of the man in question. In terms of soundtrack, that translates as two discs of rare and iconic material, from 'The Jean Genie/Love Me Do/The Jean Genie' medley (recorded at the final date of the Ziggy tour in 1973), to alternative mixes of tracks like 'Modern Love'.

Review: David Bowie's Diamond Dogs is a seminal album in his career, released in 1974 amid the glam rock era. The album plunges into a dystopian world, with Bowie adopting the persona of Halloween Jack, a feral survivor in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Songs like 'Rebel Rebel' and 'Diamond Dogs' capture the album's raw energy and cynicism, while '1984' reflects Bowie's fascination with George Orwell's novel. Diamond Dogs remains a very important record to Bowie's artistic vision and musical prowess. While many remember the album as the transition period between Ziggy Stardust and The Thin White Duke, the music is equally as memorable. Its themes of alienation, rebellion, and survival continue to resonate with listeners today, making this anniversary edition a valuable addition to any Bowie fan's collection.

Review: Sony records is celebrating 50 years in music in 2024 and coincidentally, Diamond Dogs by David Bowie is also sharing that same timeline. Considered by many, to be the last album released of his glam rock period after disbanding his backup band The Spiders From Mars. With his career direction in some question and longtime guitarist Mick Ronson gone, you have arguably one of the interesting studio albums of his career. Led by the hit 'Rebel Rebel', the album marked a turn for Bowie's songwriting having been inspired by a recent interview he did for Rolling Stone with WIlliam S Burroughs. An admirer of Burroughs' working methods and his 1964 novel Nova Express, Bowie revealed he had begun using Burroughs's "cut-up" technique as a way for inspiration. Ultimately, Diamond Dogs is most important for being the transition point from Ziggy Stardust to the Thin White Duke which catapulted Bowie's success in the United States. While only having one modest hit from the album, Diamond Dogs was still a big success. In hindsight, it would also help establish David Bowie as an artist where fans wanted to hear his entire work and not just a single's worth and to Bowie, that showed that his personality was winning over his audience and that his new direction was a good choice.

Review: This special 50th Anniversary Edition of the late great David Bowie's soundtrack to his iconic Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars show comes on double gold vinyl for the first time since it was originally recorded. Despite Ziggy being Bowie's most loved alter ego, he retired it much to the chagrin of fans (and band members, who had no idea it was coming) live on stage at London's Hammersmith Odeon. The farewell speech he gave is included here along with a medley of 'The Jean Genie'/'Love Me Do' and 'Round And Round' featuring Jeff Beck and plenty of other Bowie classics from that era. A real moment of rock 'n' roll history, then.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Item is missing obi-strip, but is otherwise in excellent condition***

From the peak of David Bowie's glam era, here's one of the all-time greatest albums which is, quite simply, beyond iconic. From the cover photography to every single tune, this is bedded in the popular consciousness like few other records, and so of course it deserves a monumental tribute 50 years after its initial release. All the classics are here from 'Panic In Detroit' to 'The Jean Genie', pressed up as a half-speed remastered edition which will be an essential purchase for all Bowie collectors and devotees, even if they know the album inside and out already.

Review: The legend of the late great David Bowie will always live on, particularly with spectral releases like this still appearing on the regular. Rock 'n' Roll Star! vharts Bowie's journey to Ziggy Stardust across no fewer than six CDs and a blue-ray disc that include early home demos, radio sessions and live performances, session recordings, outtakes and alternate versions of tunes from his The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust record. Unreleased gems on the album include an alternate rendition of 'Lady Stardust,' an unheard version of the cherished 'Shadow Man,' and an upbeat interpretation of The Who's 'I Can't Explain.' Interestingly, Bowie later slowed down and covered this for the PIN-UPS album.

Review: David Bowie's Rock 'n' Roll Star! chronicles the boy from Bromley's transformative journey that culminated in his Ziggy Stardust masterpiece. Spanning from February 1971 to the recording of 1972's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, this compilation presents 14 rare and previously unreleased tracks that trace Bowie's artistic metamorphosis. From early Ziggy Session takes to alternative versions and outtakes, this vinyl release offers an intimate glimpse into Bowie's creative process. Each track reveals a different facet of the artist, from the proto-glam of 'Hang On To Yourself' to the soaring balladry of 'Holy Holy.' The album culminates with two iconic performances: an energetic Top Of The Pops rendition of 'Starman' and an alternative version of 'John, I'm Only Dancing' that showcases Bowie's diverse musical talents. Mastered at half-speed, this black vinyl LP provides an immersive and nuanced listening experience.

Review: 'Heroes' is the David Bowie song even people who aren't fans of David Bowie love. It is also the title of the 12th studio album from the British maverick and one of his most successful. It comes from his famous 70s Berlin period and was written in West Berlin with collaborator Brian Eno and producer Tony Visconti. Most of the tunes were crafted in the studio, on the spot, with Bowie adding his lyrics later. It was a commercial hit that peaked at number three on the UK albums chart and features one half of conventional rock tunes and one half of more instrumental tracks.

Review: 'Moonage Daydream' is the latest addition to the Bowie franchise; an epic film of never-seen-before Bowie footage, recolourised and repackaged to form an experimental cinematic odyssey for today's generation of art rock lovers. The soundtrack sees an insta-release to complement the launch of Parlophone's new digital streaming service; it's got an exclusive early version of 'Hunky Dory' in there, as well as a live version of 'Rock n' Roll With Me'. A kaleidoscopic LP from the master of reinvention, posthumously reinventing himself once more.

Review: Limited yellow LP edition of the starman's famed concert appearance at the Convention Center Arena in Dallas, 1978, as part of his 'Isolar II' tour. Following a digipak-only release in 2019, it deserves the gatefold: a famous YouTube clip captures the performance in lo-fi quality - with bowie donning a casual green tee and spangly silver trousers - but this version is restored straight from the engineer's unclipped soundboard, bringing you a perfectly sync-uppable version in all its high-quality glory.
