Minimal/Tech House
Synapse (7:35)
Panache (7:47)
The Night Before (7:39)
Tidals (7:24)
Review: There is an inviting darkness to the grooves crafted here by Raveld on the Synapse EP. It is a fine bit of contemporary and tasteful tech house that opens with the long form title tune. Snappy beats and sci-fi motifs define it as you head out on your cosmic trip. 'Panache' is full of smart studio FX and retro touches to make it a more peak time offering then 'The Night Before' will get you in a trance with its airy, playful sense of wispy melody. The deepest of the all is last tune 'Tidals' with its spinning hi-hats circling snares trapping you in sublime loops.

Review: The relentless Athens Of The North is having a busy month even by its own high standards. February alone has at least three new 45rpms dropping and this might be the best: Homegrown Syndrome were a band that ended up in LA but giggled all round Memphis. Some members had played with an earlier band but they all came good on these previously unleashed tunes that have been found in the attic of Jerry Jones. 'Got The Love' is a chunky funky stepper with swirling synths and disco energy. 'Party Vibes' then takes off once more on hip swig claps, big arching chords and strident drums.

Review: LNDFK makes a hugely impressive debut on Bastard Jazz here. It isn't just her label debut, but her first ever solo release after previously providing vocals to the likes of Pellegrino & Zodyaco , Ze In The Clouds and Doniel. Her spoken-whispered-sung vocals are soft around the edges, fuzzy and warm as they convey real emotion. It is neo-soul for 2022 and beyond, with jazzy instrumentals and broken beat drums proving nice vehicles for the vocals. Guests Chester Watson, Asa-Chang another's add further colour to this most timeless of albums.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Torn seam on the outer sleeve, otherwise in perfect working condition***

Since he made his debut on Golf Channel in 2015, Nadav Spiegel AKA Autarkic has undoubtedly carved his own musical niche. He's released on some impressively off-kilter outlets, Disco Halal, Turbo and Bahnsteig 23 included, in the process establishing himself as an artist with a head full of ideas and an impressive variety of influences. "Terms and Conditions", his third album, is joyfully hard to describe, mixing and matching as it does elements of leftfield electronica, Middle Eastern electronics, throbbing Italo-disco, crusty psychedelic rock, neo-trance, oddball synth-pop, lo-fi art-rock, post-punk, dub, and acid-laden UK bass. By rights it should be a sonic mess, but it isn't, with each successive track bringing new sonic surprises.

Review:  Don Cherry's vast discography has got myriad highlights. Some are mad and hard to explain, some are trippy and immersive, and some are mystical. On The Eternal Now - one of two albums cut for Sonet - he was joined by Swedish players like Bernt Rosengren, Agneta Arnstrom, and Bengt Berger. The vibe is very much worldly jazz and it is layered with strange percussion, gongs, pianos, and other percussive instruments. Vocals from Cherry himself can also be found along the way and as such this is one of his most expansive works.

Review: Lovers of the famous East Coast hip-hop sound out of the States will have long been dial into this cornerstone classic, Dah Shinin', by Brooklyn duo Smif-N-Wessun. With help from the Da Beatminerz production crew, it is a timeless record with plenty of jazz and reggae flourishes thank to the great samples while the hardcore bars and beats have a real underground edge. MCs Tek and Steele are in perfect form over the 16 tunes and guest slots from Black Moon also bang. This is one no hip hop head should ever be without.

Review: Main Source cut a sharp figure when they broke through in the early 90s, made up of Toronto's K-Cut and Sir Scratch and New York's Large Professor. Their debut album Breaking Atoms is one of the greatest from that golden era for hip-hop, and there's no shortage of hot tracks to pick for a 7" pressing, but here Japan's P-Vine picks out the classic 'Live At The Barbeque' and backs it up with Large Professor's own self-titled joint. This is early 90s hip-hop at its best, boiled down on a handy little single for those moments when you just want the hits.

Review: We've been treated to a few revisits of tracks from the mighty Main Source and their seminal debut album Breaking Atoms, and now P-Vine are pressing up two of the best on a crafty little 7". 'Looking Out The Front Door' is a stone cold classic through and through, riding a dense and dusty break as Large Professor laments on love gone wrong. Despite the downcast lyrical theme, the vibe of the track is sun-kissed mellow gold, thanks in no small part to the buttery Rhodes licks. On the flip we get 'Snake Eyes', the opening cut from the album which cemented Main Source's legendary status back in 1991.

Review: The latest collection from the mighty Soul Jazz draws together a myriad of different styles favoured by black British sound systems, not only reflecting the roots of different communities reaching these shores but also the UK twist that that music has received as result. Reggae forms the backbone of the collection, from the blissful consciousness of Pebbles' 'Positive Vibrations' to the more protest-orientated Brown Sugar's 'Black Pride' and Tabby Cat Kelly's 'Don't Call Us Immigrants'. But the presence of Shut Up & Dance, Ragga Twins, Ray Keith aka The Terrorist and Digital Mystikz helps show the uniquely British areas into which sound system culture evolved - rave, breakbeat, jungle and dubstep.

Review: It had been five years since fans had received any new, original material from Marianne Faithful by the time Vagabond Ways landed, and it's safe to say the record was worth the wait. Containing both her own work, and re-interpretations of songs by the likes of Roger Waters, Elton John, and Leonard Cohen, if the track list is impressive then the delivery is astounding.

Continuing in her neo-cabaret persona, Vagabond Ways is a theatrical and dramatic piece of work to say the least. Packed with emotion and stage presence, to call this rock would be reductive. More a journey into a kind of surreal, experimental pop realm that's filled with mystery, beauty, and unease, this is an excellent example of how a record can invoke incredibly vivid imagery of your own devising.

Review: A blast from the past made in the present: Tempo Records present this gem from Hidden Agenda (Jason Goodings), who operates in a well-trodden but no less effective drum n' bass style. Printer Jams and running companions abound on this three-track 12", fusing urban breakbeat, old-skool jazz and obscure samples to solid effect. 'One Time' certainly won't be playing on our turntables just one time, while 'Just Me' eases into neurofunk and 'Something Nu?' lowers the tempo to deliver just as much - fans of Concord Dawn or John B will be impressed.

Restored and fully remastered from the original tapes, it comes with new liner notes and photography. A sonic snapshot of Scandinavia's early '80s electronic/progressive movements, Mindgames is a singular album with a Balearic outcome that showcases a lifetime of musical and personal exploration by the Orebro native. As a child jazz drummer prodigy, arts venue operator, music teacher and Aikido practitioner, a bewildering array of personal and creative influences are channeled into Ferger's only long player.

Quite when they'll grace us again isn't clear right now, but this quarter centenary re-issue of their acclaimed self-titled effort might go someway to reminding us why any activity from the seminal Boston, Massachusetts alt rock titans is something to get excited about.

First unveiled in September 2006, at the time the band were introducing fans to a new lineup, with founding father and one of the finest songwriters of his generation, Evan Dando, joined by Descendents/All bassist Karl Alvarez and drummer Bill Stevenson. Just as gritty, discordant, intelligent and relentlessly catchy as ever, this is a truly welcome archive outing.

He's proved that countless times over the last four decades and continues to deliver fresh batches of must-check reworks on a regular basis. His latest two-track missive doesn't disappoint either. On the A-side he goes drum crazy, delivering an eight-minute exercise in sweaty, ultra-energetic Batacuda-disco heaviness that's little more than disco beats and layered Latin percussion. He returns to disco pastures on 'The House of the Rising Sun', a suitably warm and soulful rearrangement of a sugary, orchestrated workout that may be capable of moistening a few eyes out on the dancefloor.

SIT, short for Sideways Invisibility Theory, is the collaborative project of Vlad Caia and Cristi Cons. As two scene leaders of the Romanian minimal phenomenon, both artists have proven over many years to have a unique vision for creativity and fresh approaches in what can be a homogenised scene. Of their many achievements, on their Amphia label as much as elsewhere, this album on Sushitech stands as one of their finest moments. As with all the best Romanian minimal, it's also still hotly in demand, making it a welcome addition to Sushitech's 15th anniversary pressing marathon. From dub tech laced rollers to gossamer-light trippers, this is the classiest end of the minimal tech house game from two artists with the vision to push things a little bit further.

Review: Ever consistent Canadian hardcore punk crew, Cancer Bats, are seemingly set to return with their follow up to 2018's 'The Spark That Moves', which marks their first offering following the departure of founding guitarist Scott Middleton.

With the frenetic thrashings of latest single, 'Lonely Bong', the group haven't sounded this vitriolic or pissed off in the better part of a decade.

From the thunderous title-track alone, it's evident 'Psychic Jailbreak' marks a smouldering return to form with low end grooves and Southern snarl imbued within its hardcore bindings. Cancer Bats have always sounded their best when resembling Every Time I Die getting into a beer-soaked bar brawl with Down, and this could be the fight that leads to a hospital visit.

Scott Hallam has been an acid devotee since the early days, and he's largely put out his music on his own Axia label. While most of that is digital-only, now Cartulis have picked up on the considerable talents of this hardware lifer and presented five of his finest works on wax. The vibe veers tremendously, touching on dark and sinewy dungeon acid, boxy electro workouts, strangely psychedelic hardcore and plenty more besides. Hallam's style feels betrothed to the outboard approach - it's all synths and drum machines to these ears, and its immediacy is a big part of the charm. That, and the playful personality he works into those wigged out acid lines and pinging FX.

It is full of the sort of bliss out, dreamy, soft-edge deep house that is perfect for the warmer months and outdoor dances. Paolino & Gianni Bini lead the way with the effortlessly hazy and lush feeling 'Love' (Classic mix) while Sasha's 'Key To Heaven' is a perfect prog house tune that harks back to the heyday of Renaissance. Paramour & Adrian Morrison then link for the more dark and driving 'Transmutation' which has train track drums and suspensory chords always building but never bubbling over. Open Spaces run out with the widescreen and chunky dub house of 'The Far Side Of The Mood.'

Review: Erevan DJ's modern electronic label Bamboo Shows is responsible for some of the most boundary-pushing new underground electronic music. So, what better way to celebrate is there, than to give the style a name, 'Vapordub', and compile its choicest cuts into one 17-tracker? Inspired by the textures and aesthetics of vaporwave, 'vapordub' explores the genre's unconscious hive mind, inviting both known and unknown artists (and obscurant aliases) to contribute mournfully cutting-edge ambient bits to the fold. Sublime.

Review: Back in 2000, Jack White was right at the height of his popularity - not that it has waned much since, to be honest. De Stijl is the second album from his band The White Stripes and while it didn't placed that impressively in charts at the time, it has since become a cult classic amongst late coming fans who have gone back and worked their way through the band's discography. Fact fans will be interested to know that 'Why Can't You Be Nicer to Me?' was used in an episode of The Simpsons and 'Apple Blossom' was used in Quentin Tarantino's film The Hateful Eight.

Review: Mple Soul's Fat Jon is back on top form with this new slice of blissed out hip hop. It comes in 7" form on Ample Soul and opens up with the a-side roller 'Your Purpose' which was originally featured on the Samurai Champloo series. It has dreamy chords and gently tumbling drums that are imbued with an enchanting melody line. Flip it over and you will find 'Why We Dream,' a cut with noodling bass and airy broken beats and that is no particular hurry to go anywhere specific. Add in the cute vocal stabs and there is enough soul to keep you warm for weeks.

He's been slowly yet steadily honing his craft over the last 12 years with releases on respected labels such as Assemble Music, Tvir, Gilesku and Oskar Offermann's White to name but a few. Laminar Flow also happens to be his first full-length, taking in a wide variety of moods and grooves along the way. From the evocative and acid-laced flow of 'Incubation Theory', the sci-fi electro of 'Oort Cloud' to the sublime ambient offering 'Dusk By The Bay' and the saucer-eyed sunrise breaks of 'Shifting Sands' - the result is a timeless piece of liquid-smooth sonic art.

Review:  Morris Mobley is an alter-ego who makes music that is designed to chill you to the bone while also blowing your mind. Words like suave, cosmopolitan, lustrous and precise all come to mind when listening to the two tracks that make up this tidy 7", the second on the US label CQQL. Opener 'What's On Your Mind' is a low slung, bumping groove with lo-fi production and an aching vocal and on the flip it gets stripped right back and made into a warm, romantic late night dub.

Review: Edgar Winter is the brother of blues guitarist Johnny Winter, and he's organised this tribute album with a heavyweight cast whipping up a good old fashioned rock n' roll storm. Lead single 'Mean Town Blues' is a slide guitar workout and a half, featuring Joe Bonamassa on the licks, Sean Hurley on bass and Gregg Bissonette on the drums. The album is crafted to reflect the evolution of Johnny Winter's playing style over the course of his life, and the list of guests paying tribute is impressive, with huge names like Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh and Taylor Hawkins in amongst the list of rock heroes doffing their cap to one of their own.

Now, less than a year removed from the life affirming scrappy anthems of 'The Mutt's Nuts', the gang (no pun intended) return with a literal 'Labour Of Love.' The Chengdu-based arranger, mixer, mastering engineer and Eurorack modular designer presents eight original tracks on his debut vinyl album, with an extensive selection of remixes by some of the scene's biggest names such as the aforementioned Armani, Samuel L. Session and Waffensupermarkt. Style wise, TPMP goes for that greyscale dub techno sound, counting the likes of Basic Channel and Echospace as influences. Whether it's the locomotive minimalism of 'White Point', the cavernous and glacial body bash of "Gray Point" or the deconstructed EBM of "White Line" - Hardester High Frequency proves that TPMP is one to watch!

Review: The concept behind Luke Una's first solo compilation as a selector may be a little bit fuzzy - fundamentally, it's music for watching sunrises and feeling spaced out after a night on the tiles - but the music he's decided to showcase is uniformly fantastic. In-keeping with his famously eclectic approach to music, the 13 tracks on E-Soul Cultura include forays into spiritual jazz (Chene Noir), luscious Brazilian sunshine music (Robson Jorge & Lincoln Olivetti), acid-jazz-goes-deep house (Brand New Heavies), British neo-soul (Typesun), jazz-funk (King Erisson, Yussef Lateef), chant-sporting proto-house madness (Nar'Chiveol), a prime slices of sub-heavy Sheffield brilliance (On's sought-after cover of 'Southern Freeez') and a blissed-out chunk of minimalist electronica from Roman Flugel's Soylent Green project.

Review: Not to be mixed up with the celebrated English footballer, Alan Shearer is an alias of Frederic Viger, who released albums of minimal wave electronics and synth pop from the mid-80s to the mid-90s. His debut, Dark Is The Colour, is a coveted curio from the mists of time (aka 1985), steeped in all the neon-lit allure you could ever wish for from an album of this ilk. Drum machines galore and glorious synth compositions shot through with a pervading spookiness - it sounds great for the era, not as noisy and lo-fi as similar efforts. Viger knew what he was doing, and now thanks to Favourite this rare gem is available for your listening pleasure.

Review: Run out of Paris by DJ duo Fa_Fane and F.M., DELODIO is bringing a delightfully freaky strain of grubby lo-fi grooves to our attention, pitching somewhere between minimal wave, noisy techno and Balearic splendour. If that sounds appealing you're going to love Froid Dub, comprised of producers Francois Marche and Stephane Bodin cruising through a particularly lopsided abstraction of dub which sounds like it favours the clank of mid-range drum machines from yesteryear and their attendant synths. It's all very in-the-desk, and very cool indeed, with the blissfully surrealism of 'First Floor' being a particular highlight.

Review: There's a clear statement of intent when a band puts out a retrospective compilation subtitled Volume 1. Pearl Jam are unarguably an outfit that can back up that hinted threat with genuine goods, too, ranking among the most influential US alternative rock bands of the 1990s. As such we're already chomping at the bit with anticipation for the sequel.

Sticking with this one, though, there's plenty here to introduce newcomers to exactly why the act that gave us landmark LPs like Ten warrant revisiting and celebrating. Tracks like 'Alive' and 'Even Flow', and 'Once' still sound as powerful and inimitable (no that many haven't tried) as they did when said album landed, with a slew of other material here proving just how many new ideas came from the team in their formative years.

Review: Zodiak Commune reaches right back into the early days of the Dutch acid techno and electro scene, and it remains an essential outlet for tough and gnarly rave gear for darkened souls. This new record is a split between Umwelt and Serge Geyzel, continuing a series of split discs pitting serious underground operators against each other. Umwelt's side kicks off with the blistering acid electro of 'The Wake Of The Anthropocene' and follows up with heavy but melodic pearler 'Cosmic Dancer'. Geyzel's 'Off The Ground' is a nervy slice of acid with sad-hearted undertones, and 'Hostage' completes the set with a moody, percussive throwdown.

Their latest EP/mini-LP/opus, 'The Exile', limps a barefoot trudge over broken glass with violent, cacophonous results. In 1971, Hideakira Sakurai, Masahiko Satoh, Stomu Yamash'ta and Takehisa Kosugi gathered in Japan to perform an invite-only concert to a handful of friends. Deep and distinctive electric shamishen becomes a sonic centrepiece over the course; handled by Sakurai, the sound is haunting, like a lone voice amidst a sea of percussive nymphs. Sloshing koto, percussion and eruptions of awe from the crowd all dominate the moments of downtime; a timeless snapshot of Fluxus Japan.

Review: Mint Condition has so far proved adept at licensing and reissuing high-grade fare from the 1990s that many people may have missed out on first time around. This single from Dylan Beale, one of two he released as Eze-Ozo back in 1991, is undoubtedly essential: a two-track bleep & breaks excursion that strikes a perfect balance between the alien, sci-fi sounding weight of purist bleep and the rolling energy of early breakbeat hardcore. 'How To Stay Alive' is shuffling, crunchy and sub-heavy, with nods to trippy US deep house as well as early Warp releases, while 'Kick The Break In' comes from the same sonic space as the contemporaneous Original Clique and Ubik releases.

The politically charged, socially conscious crew are a well-oiled machine at this point in time, and you need only listen to a snatch of new album For the FKN Love to understand that. As ever it's fronted by Speech and produced by Configa, but this time around they've invited a plethora of guests from legends like Big Daddy Kane, The Sugarhill Gang, Monie Love and Fatman Scoop through to emergent talent like Twan Mack, Dell-P, Lish and Ke'Andra. It's resulted in a vital statement for the rude health of message-laden hip-hop in 2022.

Notes: This is an arrangement of the pattern "KOKAWANU," a favorite of Kabuki actor Danjuro Ichikawa VII, with analog records. It was expressed in a refreshing and cool "dark blue and dark blue" colour.

This hand towel is compact enough to carry in your pocket without being bulky, and has excellent water absorbency and quick-drying properties.

It can be used as a handkerchief to wipe sweat, or wrapped around your head or neck to protect you from the sun. It is also useful for festivals and live performances.

It is made by craftsmen using the Chusen dyeing method, which has been used since the Meiji era.

Organizing bleaching, gluing/stapling, dyeing, washing, drying in the sun... These tenugui are painstakingly made by craftsmen who bring their best skills together under the complete division of labour.

Artisans have been using the Chusen dyeing technique since the Meiji era.
