Blood Moon (Roza Terenzi Eclipse mix) (5:51)
Blood Moon (Dawl & Sween Tone DropOut remix) (7:17)
Blood Moon (Violet remix) (5:56)
Review: Kim Ann Foxman takes a break from her own Self:Timer label to pop up on [Emotional] Especial. Her track "Blood Moon" hinges around rolling breaks and a globular monosynth bassline, but it's Foxman's vocals that give the track an electric, mystical energy that will cast a spell over the dance. Roza Terenzi takes the original and jacks it up, sharpening the focus of the rhythm section without losing the crunchy breaks. Dawl and Sween channel some bleeps n' breaks vibes of their own with a version that keeps things darkside and wiggy for the old-skool crew. Rounding things off, Violet's remix emphasises the acid as it plunges into the depths of the dungeon in a hooky, hard-edged style.

Track 1 (13:10)
Track 2 (16:48)
Review: 0 is back on their own 0 label with 02, a second offering of experimental electronic music. Both sides of this 12" are taken up by one long and winding track each. The first is all dubbed out, with gassy sounds bringing a little light and sharpness to the murky pads, grainy effects and lo-fi aesthetic all around. It's a heady back room cut for in-the-know crowds at 5AM. The flip side is a little fuller, with skittish rhythms, busted sine waves and watery synths all coalescing around a haunting groove that is awash with real-world noise.

Review: Rave Angst is an alias of German producer Alexander Potthof. He invites us deep into his soul here with a superb double pack of deeply atmospheric sonics that features food for the mind, body and soul. Plenty of these cuts will challenge you as a listener but then reward you in equal measure. They are deeply emotional even when rather apocalyptic sounding and there is plenty to love here for those who enjoy the sounds of Aphex Twin and early Plastikman as metallic rhythms suck you into Potthof's unique sound world.

Worlds We Both Know
Review: It's been a while since the last fresh outing of James Blake material, and he surfaces on his plenty active 1-800 Dinosaur imprint with some typically esoteric material that confirms he still exists in his own unique sound world. "200 Press" is a track that evolves with elegance, with an electro thread powering the track while around drift wild bass notes, displaced vocals and occasional chimes, and still it grows into a spellbinding crescendo infected with ghetto swagger. "200 Pressure" takes a more obscure and yet bombastic approach with strange punk inflections, lurid synth intervals and a lot of found sound disturbance. "Building It Still" by way of comparison lets a little of the more classical musicianship sneak in, leaving odd poem "Words That We Both Know" to round off the EP on an ambiguous but personal note.

And Holy Ghost
Review: The process of a club night turning into a fully fledged label is one that's happened many times before with London crew Night Slugs perhaps the template on how to make the expansion a success. 1-800 Dinosaur sees James Blake and a few friends try to make this transition too, with an irregular anything goes club night spread across London, Paris and Barcelona morphing into a label with Blake himself at the helm for the debut release. Leading proceedings is a dub version of "Voyeur", Blake's most overtly house based production thus far and a highlight of his recent second album Overgrown. This stripped back take sees the spiralling intricacies of his original production come to the fore and it's complemented by the hazy bed of gurgling, foggy textures that is B-Side cut "And Holy Ghost". Given who else is involved in 1-800 Dinosaur it will be intriguing to see where the label goes from here.

Hundred Years
Review: It's been a while since we were last treated to a fresh release from Airhead, but now he's back with a four tracker for the 1800-Dinosaur imprint, which finds his wayward beat science spanning all kinds of moods and tempos. The lead track sports some house-orientated signifiers but there's still plenty of room for grubby bass and off-kilter percussion without sacrificing the groove. "Shirin" meanwhile flexes a grime attitude over some loose rolling drums with a hand played feel that offsets the plastic string stabs perfectly. "Shekure" has greater links to the earlier Airhead output, keeping things sparse and fractious while the tense atmosphere reins supreme, and then "Hundred Years" delivers another swerve loaded with powerful pads and tweaked out hip hop vocals.

Review: Kemetrix, it is fair to say, is a pretty demented artist in the best possible way. His weird and wonderful sounds are utterly unique and for 100 Limousines's third release he serves u a land more of it across eight begging tracks. Kemetrix has been part of hallowed Detroit collective Urban Tree with the likes of Kenny Dixon Jnr for years and that shines thorough here in the twisted electronics and leftfield techno. Tracks sound like they may collapse at any moment, drums and perc are pills dup loosely, rhythms reveal themselves over time and the mood remains inviting if not dystopian.

Review: 2 Hot 2 Wait is the latest album from self professed "Headphone House" producer Coyote Clean Up, and a welcome return to Amanda Brown's tireless 100% Silk label who released the prolific Detroit based artist's cassette album Frozen Solid last year. Across the various formats he's released music on, Coyote Clean Up has always exhibited a charming embracement of lo-fi house that's equally indebted to his local heroes such as Theo Parrish and Aaron Carl (RIP) as it is the skewed UKtronics of Actress, Lukid et al. The seven track 2 Hot 2 Wait continues this approach and it's augmented throughout by a notable celebration of exhibitionism and lust.

Review: DJ Panthr is the "shadow self" (or, as we'd put it, alternative alias) of Hunter P Thompson, better known for his genre-bending ambient house and ambient techno releases as Akasha System. 100% Silk describes 'Jade District' as a 'technoid night ride inspired by the fern-shoruded neon streets' of South Tabor in his home city of Portland. It's an atmospheric and fairly accurate description all told, with Thompson combining his usual dreamy chords and colourful sonics with grooves and musical motifs more often associated with electro, acid, sci-fi techno, 'Artificial Intelligence' style IDM and hypnotic dub techno. What unites it all, aside from the colourful stylishness of the whole thing, is a pervasive sense of loved-up, wide-eyed tactility.

Review: Minamo (Keiichi Sugimoto and Tetsuro Yasunaga) returns to 12k following 2020's Superstition where they paried up with singer/songwriter Moskitoo. On Tail of Diffraction the duo joins long-time friend Asuna. A new name to 12k but not to the world of ambient and experimental music where Asuna's 100 Keyboards has toured stages around the world. Minamo and Asuna have shared the stage many times in concerts and tours over years, however, this is their first recording together. These artists are well known for their mix of electronic and acoustic instruments. Minamo often employs guitars, melodicas and small percussion instruments and Asuna's recordings with toy keyboards and reed organs are phenomenal. But on Tail of Diffraction they exchanged instruments for each song and played those they weren't familiar with, approaching each one with a naivete that spawned new discoveries. The familiarity of playing live together combined with surprising new instrument combinations resulted in a freshness and excitement much needed to them in a world that has been so shuttered. There is a soaring, almost optimistic quality to Tail of Diffraction. The timbres are very present and alive. The pads arc through sunlight with glittering gold edges and the guitars are tactile and seem to be exploring hidden possibilities. The final track features Reiko Seizo with a flickering vocal performance that further feeds the idea that this album is a ray of hope. Visual artist Michiko Fujita, whose work with silk thread that expresses delicate light and shadow, provided the artwork for the album which encompasses both the playfulness and desire to search that Tail of Diffraction so beautifully embodies.

Review: You've always been able to hear the West Coast in Monocoastal, but it's particularly present when you shut your eyes after 12 months of lockdown stopping you from visiting the region. Less active L.A., and more observing in Oregon, Fischer's career didn't end with this in 2011 and the multi-disciplinary artist has produced great things since, but the album is certainly one of turning points in terms of reputation and note.

The idea of slowly watching time unfold in un-rushed places is also highly appropriate. Among the washes of tape and the waves of refrain that make up this beautiful, meditative outing, you'll hear takes and half-harmonies from found instruments including a piano and xylophone. Overall, it feels like a place removed from linearity. A liminal masterpiece, if you are that way inclined.

Review: nt.12K makes no secret of what it thinks about Dan Abrams. Let's quote from the website: "Shuttle358, the moniker of native Californian Dan Abrams, clearly stands as one of 12k's most revered, and mysterious, artists. Some say his work was responsible for humanizing [sic] the microsound movement of the early 2000's, and rightfully so." Whether you agree, whether you even knew there was a microsound movement let alone when it happened is irrelevant really. What counts is what's here.

Two decades after its initial release and Frame sounds like a lot of ambience and noise. At different points it could almost be musique concrete. And yet it's none of those things, and quite unlike much you will have heard since its first arrival. The path it trips out on, full of strange shimmers, whispers, morse code taps, epic harmonies with top end distortion, is worthy of flattery in the form of imitation, and yet it still feels utterly original.

Review: MOSS is a project from four accomplished sound artists: Molly Berg, Olivia Block, Steve Roden and Stephen Vitiello which was originally released on 12k in 2011. MOSS (Recur) celebrates the 10th anniversary with a re-release on cassette that contains a recording of a very unique live performance rehearsal on its B-side. The rehearsal catches the artists in a candid atmosphere going through their sound setups, listening to themselves, listening to each other. Snippets of conversations and laughter woven throughout make for a private peek into what was to become a stellar performance and a sonic highlight from the 12k catalog. Just the right amount of these vignettes find their way in and around the beautifully performed rehearsal, adding to the story of the captured moment.

Review: Scottish textural experimentors 12th Isle venture across the pond once more, with the label's founder Stewart Brown topping up its exquisite techno-tropical fold for an exclusive look-in to his music made between 2015-2020 (hence the name). A combo of hardware and live-drummed dribblings makes for what might classify as an electroacoustic album but without the usual pretensions, as each track from 'How's Life' to 'Westway' trudge through a million different disparate scrapes and clanks, which each nevertheless retain enough of a similarity to each other, within their difference, to form a part of the same soundbath. The album is also something of an allusion to London living, with many of its rhythmic luminaries (such as multi-rhythmic maestro Pike Ogilvy and fellow 12th Isle affiliate Vague Imaginaries) also in tow.

Review: Given the atmospheric, hallucinatory and pleasingly otherworldly nature of Vasily Stepanov and Vlad Dobrovolski's work as S A D - which so far has resulted in a handful of limited LPs and ultra-limited cassettes - it's little surprise to see the pair pop up on 12th Isle with an album of solo tracks (some credited to alternative aliases) and collaborations. Musically, what's on offer draws much from the kosmiche world of 1970s Krautrock, dub, the intergalactic end of ambient and John Hassell's 'fourth world' music, but also doffs a cap towards music concrete, mystical percussion music and experimental electronica. It's inventive, enjoyable, odd and utterly brilliant. It's well worth checking.

Review: The soothing sounds of 12th Isle, arguably Scotland's most consistent dance-not-dance music label, have rarely sounded so, err, soothing, enticing or mind-opening. Then again, when you're combining the kind of pedigree the art-electronica imprint has with Baltimore's Tarotplane, AKA underground music hero PJ Doresey, the results should be pretty impressive.

It's not actually been that long since we had our last from the man in question, 2020's The Feedback Sutras, and in many ways this picks up from there - the new school kosmiche musical blueprint laid out in the past is explored in even more depth. Committing everything to a futuristic fantasy world where possibilities are endlessly proposed through chimes, synths, echoes and waves, if you're not painting pictures in your mind get yourself checked out.

Review: Looking back while looking forward, Christos Chondropoulos means to show us a very different time and place with this collection of recordings originally committed to cassette, crafted over a five year period of time. Fittingly retro and patient approaches considering the biggest musical influence here is arguably Ancient Greece and its traditions of sound, despite being born from dated parts the whole is still capable of pushing forward into new territories.

Old but new, or new but old, either way this is historic epic, experimental percussive electronica and drug chug stuff, all realised with the kind of atmosphere that invokes silver screen legends in times of heroes, where accuracies of aesthetic are less important than drama and action. Perhaps not really traditional, then, nevertheless you'll struggle not to feel transported far beyond with this one.

Review: RECOMMENDED
We've probably said this before, but Glasgow imprint 12th Isle sets the benchmark high for contemporary ambient productions. There's not been a bad track, let alone release, from the label to date, and we're sure that the crew know they have a knack for unearthing raw talent and not letting go. Lucy Duncombe is an artist they definitely should be keeping tight hold of then, based on this two track EP.

Opening with 'Brace', shades of Caterina Barbieri, Lyra Pramuk and all manner of other female ambient synth wonders are present, those with voices that could easily break hearts and ideas of how to use instrumentation to accentuate their beautiful tones, while also taking them in new directions. 'Mend', on the B-side, is less about refrains and more focused on a surreal playfulness, which is also no bad thing.

Review: Despite suffering some significant losses in terms of infrastructure, specifically venues, the electronic music output of Glasgow hasn't faltered since rave first hit, and the city's current crop aren't letting the side down. Not that newcomers should really see 12th Isle as fresh faced; the ambient-downtempo-deep tech hypnosis crew have been doing all that and more for time already, with this 12" a fitting return to the release schedule. In the most part it's a tripped out, spatial and exotic EP. For proof, just check the solitary low ends of 'Mais Qu'est Ce Que', shuffling and breathy percussive roll on 'Spade Birthday', and the lush tropical vibes of 'La Plage Sous Les Arbres'. But there's also evidence of the more direct side this imprint and associated events are known for when you hear the progressive house heaven of 'Deep In Blue', a track that belies genre stereotypes by sounding fresh enough to drop into anything.

Review: Glasgow's 12th Isle collective describe themselves as a "label, nightlife institution, and occasional radio broadcaster," and their debut release will find favour with anyone that keeps up to date on the inner workings of Going Good, Firecracker, Mood Hut to SUED and Acido. Thoughtstream is a truly delightful album recorded by St. Petersburg-based duo Dices + AEM, spanning some 11 tracks recorded over the duration of 2015 by the Udacha and Gost Zvuk affiliates. Influences from early sequence-based electronics and vintage space rock abound throughout Thoughtstream, paired up with a diverse rhythmic approach that is quite reminiscent of the Aquarian Foundation album that Going Good put out a few years back. Extra points are awarded for the superb silk-screened artwork courtesy of 12th Isle's own Al White.

Review: Glasgow based 12th Isle present some experimental cinema sonics by Vladimir Karpov. Electroacoustic research practice and shadowy wind instruments come together to form this unique interpretation of the mythical city of gold. Utilising rare, half forgotten Soviet era synthesisers, Karpov creates immersive soundscapes under the name XYR. The Formanta mini keytar and the Alisa 1377 lend Karpov's music strange, seldom heard atmospheres which the St. Petersburg native then combines with field recordings, toy percussion and wood flute to further build upon his utopian narratives. Part concept album, part nod to Popol Vuh, his attempt to channel the thematics of the ancient tale of the Muisca people through his modest home studio.
