Review: ZZK Records describe Montoya's new full length El Nido as "a welcoming embrace in uncertain times" and they are not wrong. It's a record that was born out of the pandemic and his desire to get back to normality. Italy-based Colombian producer Montoya reckons we were all "virgins of destiny again' in those times and he channels that into a musical quite place here. It goes from the lo-fi and dubbed out reggaeton of the wonderful 'Nubecita' featuring Pedrina to the more sunny and tropical rhythms of 'Flor del Mar' featuring Pahua via many other highlights, making this a perfect summer record no matter your mood.

Review: As any self-respecting Italo disco fan will know, Delanua's 'How Many Fill' is now 40 years old in 2022. This special anniversary edition reissue makes it widely available again on 12" maxi. The legendary song ticks all the right boxes - happy and colourful synth arps, squelchy bass and retro-future 80s drum machine sounds. The original and the instrumental are included with some more crystalline and floor-facing disco remixes by Flemming Dalum that will get your hands in the air with their bright, shiny chord stabs.

Valerie Dore - "Get Closer" (Luca Debonaire extended mix) (5:44)
Review: This one does what it says on the tin. German compilers ZYX have put together a stonking array of contemporary Italo disco cuts, showing off what modern producers can do with a now well-defined sound. Artists including Stockholm Nightlife, Diego, Love Kills, and Valerie Dore all appear, deploying lovesick, city-slicking themes: you've got gated snares, riffy synth arps and impassioned masc vocals aplenty. Marc Fruttero & Alex Papale's 'What You Want' is particularly dreamy and atmospheric, owing to Italo's longstanding ability to evoke more than just its poppy structure. No wonder the genre is a favourite among the world's biggest-name DJs.

Review: Somewhat confusingly, much of the music we assume was recorded by Italian Italo-disco group Koto was actually made by Dutch producer Michiel van der Kuy - albeit in a similar style. From The Dawn Of Time, which first surfaced in 1992 three years after he controversially acquired the name, is one such release. This reissue - the first on vinyl, as far as we can ascertain - shows what van der Kuy brought to the project, namely a rush-inducing sense of euphoria, synth riffs reminiscent of Euro-dance club cuts from the period, and rock-solid musicianship. Combine these with throbbing, Italo-disco and Hi-NRG style basslines, bustling machine drums and plenty of sonic star-gazing, and you have a post-Italo album that sticks closely to the blueprint laid out by the Dutchman's Italian predecessors.

Review: A great compilation for fans of the techno sound of the 1980s, featuring eight rare and classic tracks from the pioneers of the genre. The tracks are presented in their original extended versions, which showcase the diversity and innovation of the early techno scene. The tracks range from the synth-pop influenced electro of MCL's 'New York' and Moskwa TV's 'Generator 7/8', to the dark and industrial sounds of Hypnopedia's '666' and Bigod 20's 'Body To Body'. There are also some examples of the EBM style, such as Aircrash Bureau's 'Exhibition' and The Invincible Spirit's 'Push!', which combine hard beats, distorted vocals and aggressive synths. The compilation also features some more experimental and atmospheric tracks, such as Moskwa TV's 'Tekno Talk' and Bigod 20's 'America'.

Review: Dark Entries are masters of reissuing the tunes that are out of the financial reach of many of us. This timeless and utterly singular slice of Italo disco magic was bootlegged originally back in around 2015 and then the label decided to reissue it properly in 2016, with a remastered set of tunes for maximum playback effect. They now issue a special 40th-anniversary version. The 1982 bombshell, originally out on Discomagic Records, goes by the name of 'The Man From Colours' and it is a special track indeed, one that's full of romantic charm, mystery and plenty of proto-house vibes. Its vocals will be embedded in your mind forever upon first listen, and you get an instrumental cut on the flip, too.

Review: San Francisco's Dark Entries label does a good line in reissuing obscure, long-forgotten, left-of-centre gems (their excellent collection of Patrick Cowley's little-known soundtrack work for gay porn films, School Daze, was arguably one of the compilations of 2013). Here, they've unearthed another overlooked gem - Art Fine's previously rare-as-hen's-teeth dark Italo-disco gem 'Dark Silence'. It's pretty much a straight copy of the New Wave-inclined original, with the sparser, looser 'Long Version' joining the dense 'Art Fine Version'.

It proved to be a huge worldwide smash on dance floors everywhere and has had a million different releases and reissues ever since. Label boss Flemming Dalum has selected some deep, mystical and melancholic tackle on this one, with timeless classics such as like the bright like neon "Eagles In The Night" by Dario Dell'Aere, the post-punk swagger of The Creatures' "The Other World Robots" or the gothic romanticism of "Blue Room" by Kirlian Camera all showing an interesting side of Italo disco music.

Review: Mark Tower (real name Marco Silingardi) started DJing in 1973 while in secondary school. In the late '70s, he started his career as a professional DJ, attending various discos in northern Italy between 1982 - 1985 when he quit the DJ scene. He is regarded as a legend for his techniques behind the decks, incorporating reel-to-reel techniques which were quite innovative for the time. His first release 'You Aren't Fall In Love' was released on Discomagic back in 1983, and is reissued here on Felmming Dalum's ZYX Music. The glimmering neon-lit Italo disco of the original comes in both the original vocal and instrumental versions, as well as remixes by Dalum, Longdrink and Victor Ark - the latter's roaring rendition being our pick of the bunch.

Review: ZYX Records Germany gets it just right on this classic Italo disco masterpiece. It's a reissue of the 1982 original that comes with the two still amazing original versions as well as a special pair of bonus version for 2021. The whole package still sounds as ground breaking now as it did back then with its dazzling synths, pixelated leas and robot vocals all over a strident, forward marching beat. Despite the length of the remixes, they hold your attention from the start to the finish and on the dance floor are sure to make for some truly euphoric experiences.

Review: 80s Techno Tracks Volume 1 was originally a CD-only compilation put out back in 2019 by the ZYX Music label. It has proved so popular that it now comes on a special vinyl release that packs in eight of the best tunes to feature on the CD. It makes for a fun and throwback listen that very much chimes with the current trend for these sorts of sounds - hi-nrg, eurobeat, EBM, synth-pop, industrial and new beat with a bit of proto-acid house town in for good measure. It is the unmistakable characteristics of the machines that made these tunes that make them so instantly lovable and transportive.

Review: It is now 40 years old but copping a reasonably priced vinyl version of Faxe's 'Time For Changes' is still a tough ask. But no need to worry because ZYX have got this super reissue version out in time for its 40th anniversary. Review: 26 years on from the release of the very first Techno Club mix CD, the popular series has reached its 70th instalment. There's a celebratory feel about it, too, with series founder (and Teutonic trance behemoth) Talla 2LXC being joined by rising star Jes (who handles disc two) and the CDs coming packaged with stickers and a light-up wristband (ideal for creating that 'rave at home' vibe). Musically, it's tons of fun, with Talla 2LXC using his mix to surge between uplifting, hands-aloft cuts by John O'Callaghan, Cold Blue, John Askew and Ronski Speed & Sigma, as well as loads of his productions and collaborations. Jes takes a similar approach on her mix (CD2), flitting between her own tracks, remixes and collaborations and fine cuts by the likes of BT, Matt Fax, Sunbeam and Solarstone.

Review: Martinelli - presumably not the Brazilian one who plays in the midst of Arsenal's attack - has his classic disco gem 'Cenerentola (Cinderella)' reissued here by ZYX, a label that is well known and revered for doing just that. First up is served as an extended vocal mix that places the sentimental vocals front and centre with the sleazy sax lines also shine bight. Following the more direct Italo disco workout that is the instrumental comes a remix of the vocal that has a much more bright, tropical and steamy hot feel perfect for summer sessions and then last of all a remix of the instrumental that might be the perfect balance of everything.

Review: Those who enjoy the more intense, mind-mangling end of techno (particularly the trance-tinged, big room-ready European variants) should check out this three-disc mix-up on ZYX. Felix Reichwelt handles disc one, surging through tracks from the likes of Uncertain (the warehouse-ready excellence of 'Whack'), Thomas Schumacher (the acid-fired Jam & Spoon revivalism of 'Come Closer') and Spartaque (the fiendishly brutal 'Exhausted'), before SLT and Schwarze Puppen take over on disc two with a mix tailor made for massive venues with enormous soundsystems, minimal lighting, and thousands of wild ravers reaching for the strobes. NK4!D handles the third and final disc, offering a fine balance between riffs, melodies, intense acid lines and thunderous techno beats.

It's built around a soaring female vocal that brings an angelic edge to the far-sighted 80s chords and cold, crashing machine drum sounds. As often is the way with this label, this mighty original comes with Flemming Dalum remixes that bulk it up for modern dancefloors with a chugging and irresistible sense of ALFOS funk and then ups the synth energy on a more poppy version to close.

Review: Elevated Senses is the new series from the prolific Berlin-based producer Todo Kunst aka Zug (aka Gruvaldo among many others), this time exploring such concepts with the third eye, premonitions, telepathy and other arcane subjects. On the A-side you've got the deep groove of 'Tercer Ojo' followed by the late night affair of 'Premonition' - both on a housey tip. Over on the flip is the subtle computer funk 'Telepatia' and finally 'Seres De Luz' is a contemplative IDM affair that's perfect for drifting beyond the afterhours.

Review: Zon Records has released music digitally before, though this is the first time the wilfully eclectic Belgian label - and the producers behind the label, also called Zon - has made it onto wax. As vinyl debuts go, it's pretty good. They set their stall out with title track 'Keys For Days', a warming and sun-splashed slab of tech-tinged deep house peppered with warming chords, jazzy synth-bass and subtle TB-303 motifs, before diving into deeper, more immersive territory on the gorgeous, sunrise-ready 'Spring Break' (featuring vocalisations from Lotte Sarembe). Over on the reverse, 'Upon Us' is an analogue-rich chunk of deep tech-house, while Ukrainian producer Kirik's remix of the same track is a far more bass-heavy, tactile and otherworldly affair.

Review: Human Behind Pluto, johnfaustus and VSO all contuse to this new split red vinyl from Zodiak Communte. Human Behind Pluto goes first with a warp speed, electro-tinged techno track that has a knack-snapping beat and brilliantly mangled acid line. Johnfaustus's 'Red Sonjia' is dark and twisted electro from the underworld and VSO offers two sick jams: 'Sinking' is a bumping and coruscated bit of electro-crunk and 'Complacency' is a dense full flavour cosmic assault with fearless drum programming and plenty of suspenseful synths. This one takes no prisoners and comes with its own unique insert.

Mixing up melody, emotion, and ambiguity, Gastroler's sound is a tribute to classic electronic music that melds vintage equipment with contemporary production techniques. With a penchant for experimentation and transcending genre boundaries, Gastroler prioritizes the emotional resonance of his compositions. For him, music is a medium to evoke genuine feelings and emotions, driving his creative process beyond mere sonic exploration. To sum up - emotive techno with vintage vibes.

Review: Only 100 copies of this mystical and deeply moody 12" from Zimp Recordings main man Filthy Rich, meaning you'll have to act fast if you want one. It's well worth picking up though, not least because opener 'The Kraken (Davy Jones Mix)' is a deliciously clandestine chunk of underwater techno full of nightmare-inducing spoken word vocals and creepy electronics. The EP's other significant moment is 'Two Tone Bass', a stomping slab of fuzz-soaked industrial techno that remixer Randolph also turns into a slamming, lo-fi techno assault on the senses. Elsewhere, 'Wiff Waff (Wallpaper Mix)' is a bouncy techno roller that (somewhat hilariously) samples speeches by Alexander Boris De Pfeffel Johnson, and 'Stinky Funk' is a thrusting masterclass in weighty techno-funk.

Review: Filth Rich gets suitably filthy on this fresh outing on Zimp. His Rave EP collides many different influences from techno to electro, acid to rave, and also chucks in some classic samples to really make the tunes pop. The first is a peak-time breakbeat bruiser with slapping hits and yelping vocals, then 'Hippies Gathering' is a prog techno classic from the late 90s Castle Morten rave scene. Randolph offers his own Filthy Rave remix that gets even more wild and included along the way are some sample-tactic snippets to liven up your set no end.

Terrifying Shadows features eight tracks of 'hydraulic techno func (sic) .. and roaring drill mechanisms' that altogether make for some seriously difficult listening. Such disturbing titles as 'Into The warm Embrace Of Deviancy', 'It's So Easy To Corrupt A Soul', as well as 'The Tao Of The Scarred' or by far our favourite 'Tasting Hate From The Cup Of Gods' give you a fair warning of what to expect on this eight track opus: brutalist experimental techno delivered in uncompromising style. Review: More foreboding electronics from Kareem's Berlin-based label Zhark. This one comes from Belgian artist Derlich titled the Resistance EP, which marks a comeback of sorts as it's his first release in eight years. Features the martial stride of 'Grey Area', the sludgy techno contortionism of 'Rancour', as well as the linear functionalism of 'Ad Nauseum' and 'Fight Response' (BMS Master) which are reminiscent of Regis and Female's industrially minded output in the late '90s. Stylishly sinister. Derlich's passion for art, derelict landscapes and abandoned locations feeds the inspiration to work in this shadowy area of electronic music, as heard on his label Hidden Bones.

The band compose their material in Arabic, Italian and Romani languages and their first release on Zephyrus Records oozes a soul soothing calmness and plenty of colourful folk sounds. The musicianship is second to none as saxophone, clarinet, double bass and trumpets are all blended into one smooth and beautiful soundscape as Serf's voice adds another layer of magic. Whether jazzy and upbeat such as 'Kai Zhas Seka' or slow and mournful like 'Adame' these are all essential sounds.

Between them, the group has a mad diverse spread of backgrounds and influences which means their music too is broad in scope - psychedelic sounds and funky grooves, Arabic melodies and European rhythms all feature in this album as do rap and parlando. Review: Not content with merely being one of the biggest selling indie bands of right now, Yard Act are busy carving themselves a tasty side hustle as A&R men, with their Zen FC label scooping up some of the most exciting other music around as well as their own. This album from Sheffield's long serving synth maverick Adrian Flanagan (Kings Have Long Arms, Eccentronic Research Council, International Teachers Of Pop) is not an obvious choice for the guitar slingers, being closer to electro pop than indie, but it's a compulsive and ingenious listen all the same. Written during lockdown, it follows the rise and fall of an imaginary superstar DJ, each song pushing the narrative along and featuring a plethora of guests, including Richard Hawley and Maxine Peake, both of whom feature at the album's 'comedown' conclusion.

Review: Those who still pay attention to the music press may have noticed a fair bit of chatter about post-punk outfit Yard Act's debut album, The Overload, which one esteemed organ described as being "wonderfully wacky". That arguably does the album a disservice - "wacky" has negative connotations to some - but it is certainly a fun, freewheeling affair, whose tongue-in-cheek lyrics are frequently rip-roaringly funny. Sitting somewhere between vintage post-punk, Idles, Sleaford Mods and the Arctic Monkeys (the Leeds' band's vocals are often heavily accented), it's a riotous mix of gnarled guitar riffs, bombastic bass, shout-along choruses, drum machine beats and surprise nods to disparate musical styles (EG West African rhythms on 'Payday', Juju guitars on 'Land of the Blind') .

There is plenty of cosmic urgency to the electro-tech of 'B-A-D' and all its withering sci-fi aesthetics. 'Automate Your Mind' bristles eve more with brilliantly tight drums and hits and mystic pads up above. 'Body Rocking' gets busy with pixelated melodic arps and vocoder vocals with punchy kicks and 'Smoke Break' is a more mindful and slower jam for thoughtful reflection.

Review: Raw Takes offers up exactly that - perfectly imperfect electro jams direct from his machines. We last heard from him here at Juno back in 2020 on a VA via the Sample Delivery label but here he takes charge of all six cuts on this new Zement EP. '901 Area' opens with wobbly sheet metal synths and zippy pads that eventually coalesce around a nice snappy electro breakbeat. 'Sxx' pairs ambient pads with machine gun laser fire and 'JMS' then brings a more deep and reverential viber. The rich variation continues on the flip so that there is everything from tripped-out acid to hard-hitting and ear-drum-shattering electro-tech.

Review: M Parent's penchant for texture is laid bare on this searing and arresting new EP for Zement. It opens with 'Gravel Pit' which sounds like an audio diary from a car-wrecking plant. Twisted metal, fizzing battery acid, and crushed glass all feature over a distorted baseline and broken rhythm. Those same scuzzy sounds define the rest of the EP from the acid-laced 'Ideal Future' to the coruscated funk of 'Acid Thirst' via the caustic intensity of closer Climb These Walls'. An impressively unique offering that very much has its own singularly sound palette.

It was recorded in the medina of Marrakesh and is an absolutely essential listen for anyone with an interest in African and Middle Eastern music. The Gnawa, if you don't know, are an ethnic group in what is today called Morocco. They are descendants of West African slaves who arrived in the 16th century and were converted to Islam but still kept with them remnants of their animistic practices. They perform a complex and long ceremony to recreate the genesis of the universe and this music is a large part of it.

Review: It's not just a clever name. Zake and City Dawn have come up with a record that genuinely sounds like the reflective moods that so often follow great loss, realised on record. Sweeping synth-strings on 'We Once Believed We Owned The Sky' only serving to reiterate the sense of lamentation that seems to pervade every corner of this album.

Sometimes looking back on what was but will never be again is the only real way of making ourselves feel better - by connecting to intensely emotional memories we can trigger an outpouring that's truly cathartic. As if following that pattern, Frizzell & Duque: A Sorry Unrequited is a strangely uplifting experience by the time we're listening to the closing bars of 'The Sparrow's Flight', even if that's only because of the sense that others have the capacity to feel the same as we do.

Review: Z Records' ongoing 'Attack The Dancefloor 'series of compilation style vinyl EPs has long been a reliable source of disco-fired excellence, and this 21st edition is another high-quality affair. We're first treated to a superb Jimpster revision of recent Mistura single 'Want Me Back', where Jemini's spoken word vocal, jazzy keys and spacey synth sounds rise above loose-limbed deep house beats and wiggly TB-303 lines, before Birdee drops a genuinely joyous, organic-sounding disco-house take on 1991 classic 'Do What You Feel' (now credited to Joey Montenegro, rather than his now retired Joey Negro alias). Elsewhere, Lee's own rework of Lakeshore Commission's Bluey collaboration 'In The Light' is a smooth, soulful, string-drenched delight and the veteran producer's 'Destination Boogie' tweak of Destiny II's 'Play To Win' is a revivalist '80s electrofunk delight.
