Notes: For many, vintage Roland JUNO synthesisers define the sound of the '80s. Increasingly popular on the used market, many keyboardists either want one, or deeply regret selling one back in the day. With the JU-06A you get the sound, look, and features of both the JUNO-60 and JUNO-106 in one reliable, modern instrument that you can take anywhere.

JUNO where you go:

The JU-06A is compact, yet comfortable for long studio sessions and epic live performances. It runs on batteries and has a handy built-in speaker, so JUNO goes where you go. With USB audio/MIDI and full-sized MIDI jacks, you play and synchronize with just about any piece of gear. Dual passive attenuator - 4HP
Notes: Module A-183-1 is a simple passive dual attenuator. Passive means, that each unit is made of two sockets and a 50k linear potentiometer only. There are no active parts like amplifiers or buffers and no power supply is required.

Balance unit:

- The balance unit is made of two VCAs which are controlled by the sum of manual Balance control and the balance CV input in the opposite direction.
- The audio input of VCA1 is hard-wired to the VCO output, audio input 2 is connected to the socket Ext.In.
- The output of the balance unit is used as audio input for the VCF
- Bal.: manual balance control, fully CCW the internal VCO is used, fully CW the external signal (Ext.In) is used, at centre position both signals have about the same level
- CV Bal.: CV input for balance (range about 0...+5V)
- Ext. In: external audio input for VCA2, about 5 Vpp level required for similar loudness as the internal VCO
- This socket is normalled to the internal VCO suboctave f/2 signal (rectangle with half the frequency), if no external signal is applied the suboctave signal is used as the second signal for the balance unit

VCF:

- 24 dB low pass
- Frq: manual frequency control
- FM1: frequency modulation depth (attenuator wired to the VCF FM1 socket, the socket is normalled to the internal Envelope signal and then FM1 controls the modulation depth of the internal envelope applied to the filter)
- FM2 (socket) : second CV input for VCF without attenuator (about 1V/octave), can be used e.g. for VCF tracking by connecting the same CV which is used also for the VCO frequency
- Res: manual resonance control (up to self oscillation)
- If the VCO is turned off (waveform switch = centre position, pulsewidth control = fully CCW or CW) and the VCF resonance is set to maximum the module can be used as a sine oscillator, the tracking at socket VCF FM2 is about 1V/octave (not as precise as the VCO but much better than most other filters)
- ~ 11 octaves frequency range (~ 10 Hz ... 20kHz)

VCA:

- Gain: manual amplitude control (initial gain), can be used to open the VCA without envelope signal
- VCA (switch): used to switch between gate and envelope as control signal for the VCA, in centre position the VCA is not controlled by envelope or gate
- Note: when gate is used the VCA is controlled directly by the gate signal (i.e. hard on/off), this may lead to clicking noise under certain conditions (especially with low VCO/VCF frequencies)
- Special control scale: exponential scale in the range from about -20dB to -80/90dB, linear scale from about -20dB to 0dB
- Remark: this special control scale results in a loudness behaviour that is a bit different from pure linear or exponential VCAs
- Out: audio output of the module (= VCA output)

Envelope:

- Gate (socket): Gate input (min. +5V), can be normalled to the bus gate signal by means of a jumper
- Att: manual control for Attack
- D/R: manual control for Decay/Release
- Env. (switch): used to switch between A/D, ADSR and A/R mode of the envelope generator, in centre position (ADSR) the sustain level is fixed to about 50%
- Envelope (socket): envelope output (about +10V)
- CVT (socket): CV input for time control, by means of two internal jumpers one can select which time parameters are controlled by the CVT input (e.g. A only or D/R only or A/D/R) and in which direction (i.e. if an increasing CVT shortens or stretches the time parameter in question)
- Envelope LED display
- Attack time range: ~ 1ms ... 5 sec (can be extended by using the CVT input)
- Decay/Release time range: ~ 1ms ... 15 sec (can be extended by using the CVT input)

Each input is equipped with a three-position switch that determines if the corresponding voltage is added (right position), subtracted (left position) or if the input has no effect (centre position). If no plug is inserted the corresponding switch works as an octave switch for the lower three sections as the default 1 V are added or subtracted to the output voltage according to the switch position. 4HP Eurorack module featuring a combination of 3 functions
Notes: Module A-184-1 is the combination of three functions:

- Ring Modulator
- Sample&Hold/Track&Hold unit
- Slew Limiter

The same functions are actually already available in other modules (e.g. A-114, A-148, A-170). But in many systems it's not necessary to have two ring modulators (A-114) or two S&H units (A-148) or two slew limiters (A-170) available. That's why we have compiled these function in one small 4 HP module.

The upper section is nothing but half of an A-114, i.e. a ring modulator with the usual X/Y inputs and the X*Y output. Inputs and outputs of this sub-unit are AC coupled, i.e. suitable only for audio signals. A detailed explanation of a ring modulator can be found on the A-114 info page.

The lower section is a Sample & Hold (S&H) / Track & Hold (T&H) unit (same as half of an A-148) followed by a slew limiter (same as the upper section the A-170). A toggle switch is used to set the mode to S&H or T&H. In S&H mode the unit picks out a sample from the voltage at the SH input at the rising edge of the trigger signal input. In T&H mode the output follows the input voltage as long as the level of the trigger signal is high. As soon as the trigger signal turns low, the last voltage is stored. The trigger input is internally normalled to high, i.e. the unit works just as a slew limiter in T&H mode when no trigger signal is applied.

Sine converter/VC crossfader - 4HP
Notes: Module A-184-2 is the combination of two functions and planned primarily as an expansion module for VCOs or LFOs (e.g. A-110-1, A-110-2, A-145, A-147-2).

Triangle-to-Sine Waveshaper:

The upper section is a very precise triangle-to-sine converter (thanks to Tim Stinchcombe who recommended this circuit). It can be used to convert any triangle waveform into a (nearly) perfect sine. The converter is much better than the simple diode converter used in the A-110-1, A-111-1, A-145 and A-147-2. Two trimming potentiometers are used to optimize the sine shape. The converter should be assigned to one VCO or LFO because the trimming potentiometers have to be re-adjusted if the input level or DC offset of the input signal changes. If the trimming potentiometers are deliberately mis-adjusted it can be used also as a waveshaper for non-sine waveforms (e.g. sine-shaped at the top of the signal and a peak at the bottom, even voltage controlled by applying an additional voltage to the waveshaping circuit, "circuit-bending" notes will be available).

The waveform converter is DC coupled and can be used also for low frequencies (e.g. LFO triangle waves).

Voltage Controlled Crossfader:

The lower section is a voltage controlled crossfader. It has two inputs A and B. The two signals are mixed together with variable percentage. When the manual control CF is fully CCW only signal A appears at the CF Out socket. When the manual control CF is fully CW only signal B appears at the CF Out socket. In the centre position of the manual control both signal appear with the same level. In addition a control voltage input CV with attenuator is available to enable voltage control of the crossfade.

Two LEDs display the crossfading shares of input A and B.

The crossfader uses two high quality VCAs (SSM2164). Inputs and outputs are DC coupled. Consequently it can be used for audio signals and slowly varying control voltages as well.

The sockets of the upper section (triangle and sine) are normalled to the inputs A and B of the crossfader section. That way the crossfader is used to fade between triangle and sine of the VCO or LFO connected to the waveshaper. If other signals are plugged into the input sockets A and B these signals are used for crossfading.

The main application is to fade between two different waveforms of a VCO or LFO or two different VCF outputs. But the module can be used for any other signals too as the waveshaper and crossfader sections are independent apart from the normalled sockets.

Two separate slew limiters for generating portamento effects - 8HP
Notes: Module A-170 contains two separate slew limiters, also known as portamento controllers or integrators. The first SL has just one joint control, which sets both rise and fall times (c. 0 ...10 sec). The second SL has separate controls for rise and fall times, and can therefore be used as a simple AR envelope generator. Over and above this, you can set the overall range for these parameters, with a three-position switch, as on the full ADSRs.

Both slew limiters have two LEDs each, to show the state of the rising and falling voltages.


Additional technical remarks: If the upper slew limiter is used for precision applications (e.g. portamento/glide of one or more VCOs) a buffer (e.g. A-185-1 or A-185-2) is recommended between the A-170 output and the VCO(s) input(s). The reason is a small voltage drop that is caused by the protection resistor at the A-170 output. An A-185-1 or A-185-2 connected between the A-170 and the VCO(s) avoids that voltage loss. For all A-170 manufactured later than May 2009 (recognizable by the label "Version 2" on the pc board) this remark is not valid as these modules are equipped with an additional voltage buffer at the output.

The lower slew limiter cannot be used for precision applications because of the voltage loss caused by the diodes of the circuit.

Three independent voltage sources - 8HP
Notes: Module A-176 (Control Voltage Source) provides three voltage sources, to use wherever an extra CV is required. The top two voltage sources (CV 1 and CV 2) have controls for coarse and fine control of the voltage output; the third source (CV 3) just has the one control.

The range of the voltages output can be preset, either to 0 to +5 V or to -2.5 V to +2.5 V depending on your likely requirements. There is a jumper on the circuit board for each of the three voltage sources.

A typical use for the module would be to provide fine as well as coarse tuning for an A-110 standard VCO, (which, unlike the A-111, only has one tune control).

In general, this module will be useful whenever you need a manually controllable CV on a module which doesn't itself have a built-in control.

4HP Eurorack module featuring a combination of 3 functions
Notes: Module A-184-1 is the combination of three functions:

- Ring Modulator
- Sample&Hold/Track&Hold unit
- Slew Limiter

The same functions are actually already available in other modules (e.g. A-114, A-148, A-170). But in many systems it's not necessary to have two ring modulators (A-114) or two S&H units (A-148) or two slew limiters (A-170) available. That's why we have compiled these function in one small 4 HP module.

The upper section is nothing but half of an A-114, i.e. a ring modulator with the usual X/Y inputs and the X*Y output. Inputs and outputs of this sub-unit are AC coupled, i.e. suitable only for audio signals. A detailed explanation of a ring modulator can be found on the A-114 info page.

The lower section is a Sample & Hold (S&H) / Track & Hold (T&H) unit (same as half of an A-148) followed by a slew limiter (same as the upper section the A-170). A toggle switch is used to set the mode to S&H or T&H. In S&H mode the unit picks out a sample from the voltage at the SH input at the rising edge of the trigger signal input. In T&H mode the output follows the input voltage as long as the level of the trigger signal is high. As soon as the trigger signal turns low, the last voltage is stored. The trigger input is internally normalled to high, i.e. the unit works just as a slew limiter in T&H mode when no trigger signal is applied.

Notes: Module A-186-1 is a very simple, passive unit that combines up to 7 gate, trigger or analog signals by or-wiring.

Function:

- If all seven inputs are low or open the output is low
- If one or more of the seven inputs is "high" the output turns high

Applications:

- Combination ("or"-wiring) of gate and/or trigger signals (e.g. from LFOs, sequencers, keyboards, Midi-to-CV interfaces, ribbon controller, theremin, trigger delays or any other source of gate/trigger signals
- Maximum extractor for analog voltages: at the output the maximum voltage (minus ~ 0.7V because of the diodes) appears, similar function as the maximum output of the A-172 Maximum/Minimum Selector module, e.g. for simple waveshaping

DSP based effects module - 18HP
Notes: Module A-187-1 is a DSP based effects module. Four parameters of the selected digital effect are voltage controlled. The main effect (e.g. reverb, delay, pitch-shifter, equalizer) is selected by the two small buttons effect up/down. The upper row of the display shows the effect that is currently selected. In the lower row the four parameters are shown as well as a small bar left from the abbreviation that displays the current parameter value. Each parameter can be adjusted manually (upper potentiometer row) and modified by external control voltages (lower row of the potentiometers and upper row of the sockets). The lower row of the sockets contains the two audio inputs and outputs.

Another button (bypass) is used to turn the effect on/off. When bypass is chosen the upper line of the display shows in turn "BYPASS" and the name of the pre-selected effect. In the bypass mode another effect can be pre-selected and called-up by pressing the bypass button again. Even the effect parameters can be adjusted and are displayed with the bar graphs. But they become effective not before the bypass mode is left.

The module is equipped with two audio inputs and two audio outputs because the DSP board features stereo audio processing. The audio inputs can process usual A-100 signal levels without clipping/distortion. For higher levels external attenuators (e.g. A-183-1) or VCAs may be used.

A ready-made DSP board is used inside the A-187-1 module. Consequently, only these effects and parameters are available that are supported by the DSP module. Some parameters can be changed only in steps or with audible artefacts. The DSP board has 20 Bit DA and AD converter with 32 kHz sample rate available. The inter sound processing uses 24 Bit.

Notes: Module A-171-2 is a voltage controlled slew limiter with a lot of additional features beyond a simple slew limiter. It's mostly a licensed copy of Ken Stones VCS which is in turn based on the Serge VCS.

Typical applications:

- VC Slew Limiter / VC Portamento / VC Low Pass Gate:

Cycle switch = off, no trigger signal applied to Trig socket: Voltage controlled Slew limiter or portamento generator: the signal applied to the signal input is "slewed". The slew up and down times are controlled manually by means of the Up and Down controls, the effect of the CV Up and CV Down control voltages are controlled by the CV Up and CV Down controls, in exponential mode these controls also affect the slew shape (see symbols at the CCW and CW positions of the controls).

If an audio signal is applied an short slew rates are chosen the module works as a simple VCF/VCA combo.

- A/D Envelope Generator / Pulse Delay / Subharmonic Generator:

Cycle switch = off, trigger signal applied to Trig socket, no input signal: Simple Attack/Decay envelope Generator, the rise and fall times are controlled like the slew up/down times above, including the shape of the falling/rising slope of the envelope, the exp. CV input can be used to change both attack and decay simultaneously.

At the End output a pulse appears as the end of the envelope is reached (less than about 20mV), this can be used as a pulse delay.

If a series of triggers are applied to the VCS faster than the total rise and fall times, the module will divide the incoming signal by a whole number. In the audio range the output will be the sub-harmonic series.

- VCLFO / VCO:

Cycle switch = on, no trigger signal applied to Trig socket, no input signal: Voltage controlled LFO/VCO, the rise and fall times of the waveform are controlled like the slew up/down times above, including the shape of the falling/rising slope
the exp. CV input can be used like the CV input of a VCO or VCLFO, the response is exponential but not exactly 1V/oct.

Compact module for attenuating control voltage signals - 4HP
Notes: Module A-183-2 is a voltage offset generator combined with an attenuator/polarizer.

This is how the A-183-2 works: At the two output sockets (simply two connected sockets) appears a DC voltage that is adjusted with the Offset control in the range 0...+5V or -5V...+5V. An internal jumper is used to select the offset range (0...+5V or -5V...+5V). Other ranges are possible by changing a resistor on the pc board (e.g. 0...+10V or -10V...+10V). The DC voltage generated by the Offset control is overlaid by the attenuated voltage that is fed to the In socket. The function of the attenuator control can be set to Attenuator or Polarizer by means of a toggle switch. When the switch is in the Attenuator position the control works as an usual attenuator, i.e. zero level at the fully CCW position and max. level and the fully CW position. When the switch is in the Polarizer position the control works as a polarizer, i.e. zero level appears at the centre position. Right from the centre position the In signal is added to the offset voltage, left from the centre position the In signal is subtracted from the offset voltage. In other words: at the fully CW position the non-inverted In signal is added with the full level to the offset voltage, at the fully CCW position the inverted In signal is added with the full level to the offset voltage.

The amplification range for the input is about 0...+1 in the attenuator mode, and -1...+1 in the polarizer mode. The amplification range can be modified by replacing a resistor by another value.

Applications:

Generation of adjustable DC voltages overlaid by control voltages with adjustable level and polarity to control other modules that do not have attenuators or offset controls, e.g. Sampler A-112 (mainly for the wavetable mode), dual VCA A-132-1, VCLFO A-147-2 for waveshaping and ring modulator applications, Quantizer A-156, Theremin A-178, CV-to-Midi interface A-192 and modules of other manufacturers).

DC coupled amplifier - 4HP
Notes: Module A-183-3 is a simple amplifier. It is DC coupled and can be used for both CV and audio signals. The maximal amplification can be switched between 1, 2 and 4 (in position 1 the module does not work as a real amplifier but only as attenuator). The level can be adjusted by means of the Level control between zero and the chosen maximum amplification (1/2/4). Two overload LEDs indicate if the output signal goes beyond about +10V or becomes less than about -10V. Input and output are equipped with miniature 2-fold multiples (nothing but 2 connected sockets).

The main application of this module is to adapt differing audio or CV levels between different modules or systems. For example, LFO, ADSR or Gate levels between modules of different manufacturers can be increased or attenuated. But even audio signals can be attenuated or amplified up to 4. But the module cannot be used as an amplifier for external low level audio signals (e.g. microphones or electric guitars)!

Notes: Module A-180-3 is a dual buffered 1-in-3 multiple. The signal applied to the input socket appears as a buffered signal at the three output sockets. Each output has its own buffer, i.e. the three output sockets are not simply connected to each other. The lower output of the upper unit is normalled in the factory to the input of the lower unit. That way the module works as a single 1-in-6 buffered multiple provided that no signal is applied to the input of the lower unit. But it's also possible to pick-up the bus CV and normalize the input socket of the lower unit to the bus CV.

Module for processing/mixing of control voltages - 4HP
Notes: A-172 is a minimum/maximum selector module and is equipped with four analogue inputs and two analogue outputs (minimum, maximum). The main application of the module is the processing/mixing of control voltages, e.g. random voltages, ADSR, LFO, S&H, ribbon CV, theremin-CV and similar, but even for audio signal processing the module can be used (e.g. several outputs of the same or different VCOs).

The module permanently picks the maximum resp. minimum voltage out of the four input signals and outputs these voltages to the maximum resp. minimum jack socket.

To adjust offset and amplitude for each input independently (i.e. to bring the signal into the right "position" with the desired level) we recommend combining the module with the A-129-3 Slew Limiter/Attenuator/Offset Generator (see patch example below). The other sketch below shows the basic principle of the max/min module by means of three sine waves (e.g. three LFOs) with different frequencies and different levels.

The module can be used also as a simple half-wave rectifier.

Modulation wheel module with two wheels - 14HP
Notes: A-174-2 is a modulation wheel module with two wheels. The factory setting is a spring loaded wheel at the left side with bipolar voltage output (i.e. 0V in centre position, positive voltage in the upper range, negative voltage in the lower range, voltage range about -5.5 V ... 0V ... +5.5 V) and a wheel without spring at the right side with positive voltage output (i.e. 0V in the lowest position and positive voltage when operated, voltage range about 0...+8 V). For the spring loaded wheel a voltage "plateau" around 0 V is preset (jumper) so that the output voltage is 0 V in a small area near the centre position.

By means of jumpers the factory settings can be changed. For each wheel two jumpers are available: one for the voltage range (positive or bipolar) and one for the voltage plateau around 0 V. If these settings are changed even the wheels have to be re-adjusted mechanically. Therefore, such modifications should be carried out by a qualified person only. By request the module is available from the factory even with two wheels both with or without springs (additional charges Euro 10.00 for each change).

Important note for module mounting: As the potentiometer of the left wheel projects about 10 mm the rim of the front panel a 2 or 4 HP blind panel has to be mounted left from the module - unless the module left to the A-174-1 has sufficient space in this area (e.g. A-174-1).

Foot controller interface - 8HP
Notes: Economically priced module for connecting one foot controller and one double foot switch for control A-100 functions by means of the feet. For example, the frequency of a filter or the loudness can be controlled by a foot controller, but even other parameters like LFO frequency, modulation depth, phasing, pitch or any other voltage controlled parameter. The gate outputs controlled by the double foot switch can be used e.g. to trigger an envelope generator or to start/stop a sequencer. Even a single foot switch can be used if only one gate signal is required.

A special application of the A-177-2 is the usage within a Trautonium replica. The foot switches can be used to switch the mixtures of the subharmonic oscillator A-113. The foot controller can be used to control the overall loudness in combination with a VCA.

A-177 is compatible with the foot controllers FP5 and double foot switch VFP2. The Foot controller and double foot switch are not included with the module. If you want to use another foot controller or foot switch it has to be compatible to FP5 or VFP2.

If the foot controller FP5 is used the CV output range is about 0...+8V. The gate output levels are 0/+12V in combination with the VFP2 (foot switch not operated = 0V, foot switch operated = +12V).

Theremin controller module - 8HP
Notes: Theremin module for generating a variable control voltage by approaching/removing hand to/from an antenna. The distance range is about 30-40 cm. Additionally the module is equipped with a Gate output with adjustable threshold level. Controls/Inputs/Outputs: antenna input, offset (knob for zero adjust), 2 x CV out, 2 x LED (for CV control positive/negative and zero offset adjust).

To simulate the original Theremin two A-178, a VCO (e.g. A-110) and a linear VCA (e.g. A-130 or A-132) are required. But of course the A-178 can be used to control other functions in the A-100 (e.g. filter frequency, modulation depth and/or speed, tempo, attack/decay time and so on).

The CV output voltage of the A-178 can range - according to the setting of the front panel controls - from -10V...+10V. The gate output switches from 0V to about +10V.

Applications:

- Conversion into MIDI control change messages is possible with the A-192.

If two or more A-178 are used the distance between the modules/antennas should be at least 40-50 cm. Otherwise the antennas may affect each other.
