Review: Mad About Records officially reissues super rare private press Quintessence's 1981 LP. Surprisingly for the level of talent and production / recording wit that it flaunts, Quintessence was one of many original jazz LPs to remain in private circulation and thus completely wanting of the public ear. Led by Ron Ancrum, with George Sovak, David Gaedeke, Winston Johnson and Steve Muse, the band nonetheless recorded an exceptional slice of artistic pie here, bringing Rhodesy, tritoning sundowners to the then already well-fleshed milieu of 80s jazz, an unmistakably bulbous and gaudy sound to which Quintessence do much justice; our favourite here by far is 'In My Apartment', a tssking blue-jazz suite for boughed double bass and noir piano.

Review: Well known for many superb and seminal contributions to Japanese cinema and music, Meiko Kaji has dropped many standout albums over the years from Gincho Wataridori in 1973 to the recently remastered Hajiki Uta. Now it is 7 (Sette) that arrives on vinyl via Japanese label Tokuma Communications and once again it is a a cinematic listen with a real ethereal vocal beauty and emotive delivery from Kaji, accompanied by lush instrumentation to create a haunting atmosphere that resonates with listeners. Another gem from this underrated star.

Review: Broken beat hero Kaidi Tatham steps forth with the first in a series of all-star remix albums of the Reel People Music back catalogue. Over an impressive ten tracks, Tatham sashays between syrupy soul slo-jams, virtuosic broken beat trips, almost UK funky-esque live jams, and acoustic boom bap beats. Percies include the sweeter-than-molasses opening flip of Sebb Junior's 'All My Life', his sassy, stripped-back version of Daz-I-Kue and Hadiya George's 'Pedigree' and a dazzlingly technical re-run of the Monkey Brothers' 'Losin my Head.' With this anthology, Tatham proves that London's broken beat scene continues to flourish, and his boundary-hopping style is as relevant as ever.

Review: This year kicks off with a bang for the highly rated supergroup The End Machine as they unveil The Quantum Phase, their highly awaited new album. The record brings a notable change as vocalist Robert Mason exits, making room for rising star Girish Pradhan, known for his work with Girish And The Chronicles and Joel Hoekstra's 13. Pradhan's addition, a testament to Frontiers Records founder Serafino Perugino's discernment, has only elevated anticipation for this album. Established in 2018, The End Machine earned acclaim with their debut and sophomore albums but now this new one surpasses expectations, marking a pinnacle in their career as each note and lyric embodies artistic evolution and showcases a real dedication to creative newness.

Review: Ansonia Records' new, comprehensive Salsa Con Estilo: Dance Floor Gems from the Vaults: 1950s-1980s is a vibrant compilation, tracing the musical journey of salsa through the iconic NYC-based Latin label Ansonia Records via its founder, Rafael "Ralph" Perez. Perez is said to have played a trailblazing role in the proliferation of Salsa music throughout the US from the 1950s to the 1970s, proving the fact that trends often don't just happen but are often rather likely to catch on due to the influence of notable individuals. These tracks boast danceable rhythms, vibrant brass, and the unmistakable influence of Afro-Cuban genres like son, guaguanco, and son montuno. The compilation carefully highlights key elements such as the coro, montuno, moNa, and cierre, providing a rich historical perspective on the roots of salsa.

Review: Whitney Houston's self-titled debut album, released in 1985 by Arista records in the US, was one of the biggest records of the decade, selling millions of copies worldwide. The album featured four top-five hits: 'You Give Good Love', 'Saving All My Love for You' (which won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female), 'How Will I Know', and 'Greatest Love of All'. These songs showcased Houston's amazing, young voice and her raw talent for pop and dance music. With its mix of catchy melodies, powerful vocals, and catchy production, Whitney Houston's debut album remains a classic of the 1980s and a testament to the enduring power of her voice.

Review: Tenor saxophonist Barney Wilen made his debut splash when he was just 20 years old, impressing all those around him with the incendiary Guilde Du Jazz: 1957 album. Across the album, laggard, carefree swing and roomy bop abounded stylistically, leading one of his major inspirations, Miles Davis, to remark: "this is the best tenor saxophone I've heard in Europe; he plays tenor in an authentic way, much better than many current stars in the States." Unfortunately, this record was not widely distributed in Wilens' native France because he was under contract with the French label Vogue. Now reissued in its true home country under the wing of Sam Records, Wilen's Guilde is returns as an impressive portrayal of the saxophonist's aptitude for wild, ghostly playing, which succeeds in evoking a feeling of the uncanny despite its jubilant style.

Review: Dave Tipper, formerly a key component of the late 90s/early 00s breakbeat scene both as a producer and as bossof the Fuel label, reissues this Tipper album released in 2014 but still garnering immense interest a decade later. His 12th full-length release masterfully blends IDM, breakbeat, glitch, and downtempo, veering from downtempo to sound design and his impeccable, inimitable breaks sound. Through innovative sound manipulation techniques, he juxtaposes skewed, chopped, and distorted low-end transmissions with ethereal orchestral melodies, making this a must have for fans of challenging - in all the right ways - music.

Review: Dave Grusin's score for the whodunit comedy Murder by Death masterfully blends traditional and modern elements. Grusin's intent to approach the comedic affair seriously resulted in a thematic and delightful score that captures the film's eclectic nature. Paying homage to British murder-mystery roots while pushing boundaries, Grusin created a unique and charming musical landscape. The score's first-ever vinyl release allows audiences to fully appreciate Grusin's artistry, highlighting the perfect balance between tradition and innovation that characterizes his work.

Review: On December 30th and 31st 1978, early demo versions were laid down in Spaceward Studios of what would eventually become the debut EP from future British metal giants Iron Maiden. The three tracks in question ('Iron Maiden', 'Invasion', 'Prowler') were all recorded within the same session, making for a far more primitive and raw offering than the finalised studio versions that would ultimately find their home on the band's self-titled 1980 debut LP. This compilation restores the original three-track The Soundhouse Tapes EP, while including a bevvy of additional demos, alternative takes and live cuts from the formative, (pre-Bruce Dickinson) Paul Di'Anno era.

Review: Analog Africa has repressed the highly valued and long since sold-out Congo Funk! Sound Madness From The Shores Of The Mighty Congo River: Kinshasa/Brazzaville 1969-1982. It is a compilation that superbly shows off the raw energy and funkiness of the Congolese rumba scene. This is the country that spawned such as legendary bands as African Jazz, OK Jazz and African Fiesta and it is said that the concert ahead of the legendary Rumble in the Jungle boxing match between Muhammad Ali vs George Foreman is what really set young hopefully musicians on their paths, after they saw James Brown play live. The story of those artists and the labels they released on in the ensuing years is what is told so well here across four sides of vital wax.

Review: Fields Of The Nephilim, a UK goth band formed in 1984, made waves with their second studio album The Nephilim. Originally released in 1988, this goth masterpiece and reissued here in form set was released, featuring four bonus tracks for fans to enjoy. Known for their blend of hard rock, goth and psychedelic elements, led by vocalist Carl McCoy's growling, harsh voice adding a heavy edge to the music alongside Tony Pettit on bass, Peter Yates and Paul Wright on guitars and "Nod" Alexander Wright on drums, they create a powerhouse of sound on tracks like 'Chord of Souls' and epic seven minute opener 'Endemoniada'. The album debuted at an impressive number 12 on the UK album charts, solidifying Fields Of The Nephilim's status as pioneers in the goth rock genre along side contemporaries like Sisters of Mercy and The Mission.

Review: Mr Bongo continues to take us deep into the recorded work of Lonnie Smith with the reissue of this 1975 LP from the legendary jazz organist. It's an expansive, daring soul-jazz excursion which embellishes the heavyweight grooves with experimental, discordant tones which reach extraterrestrial heights, not least on the eyes-closed escapism of 'Spirits Free'. While Smith may have turned his hand to smoother sounds at certain points in his career, this is testament to the impact free jazz had on his development through the 70s. Crucially though, the music never derails into pure chaos, and the soulful sentiment of the music shines through even in its wildest stretches.

Review: Mount Kimbie demonstrate their expansive ability to metamorphose over time, with the Sunset Violent being their first record (the follow up to 2022's MK 3.5: Die Cuts I City Planning) to document their efforts as a quartet, as opposed to the simple duo project of Dominic Maker and Kai Campos. Now with composer Andrea Balency-Bearn and Marc Pell (Good Sad Happy Bad), the project brings an ever-so-slightly more conceptual slant to the mix, with the album centring thematically on the UFO sightings of the Yucca Valley, California, and the interplay between the literal desert in that part of the world, and the figurative desert of London (where the album was completed). As ever, the likes of 'Fishbrain' and 'Boxing' deliver indie-electronic buildups, as driving as they are infectious, mixed with the distinctly sepia-textured moods and performative tastes of London's finest (King Krule among them).

Review: What can you say about this amazing album that has not been said before?! Originally released in 1996 and quickly becoming one of the most important pieces in the history of sampled music, its legacy continues to grow while Shadow remains the archetypal example of a crate digging producer. Everything from jazz, spoken word, hip-hop and more was sampled into this cornucopia of sound - in many ways the zenith of the impressive output of James Lavelle's revered Mo''Wax label - and you wouldn't be surprised if it ended up in the Smithsonian for what it has accomplished and meant to the scene.

Recorded at shows in Berlin and Stockholm, the John Coltrane Quartet - comprising pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Elvin Jones - is in tremendous form here, using a familiar repertoire in order to expand upon the group's own building blocks in creating the new post-harmonic system that the saxophonist was developing at the time. Reissued on vinyl by Craft Recordings, this one comes released as part of the Craft Jazz Essentials series.

Review: Reggie Dokes, the legendary deep house and techno DJ and producer from Atlanta, Georgia, has finally released his highly expected Vault Volume 1. Originally released in 2005 as a CDR-only, this extended pressing allows fans to experience the magic of Dokes' music on a whole new level. With its captivating blend of jazz, techno, and house, the album takes listeners on a sonic journey through Dokes' unique musical landscape. 'My Peeps On 6' sets the tone with its smooth, deep house vibes, while 'Make Believe' transports listeners to a spacey, funk-infused post-apocalyptic realm. The beautiful 'Love Reigns' provides a moment of respite with its gentle bell chimes and bedtime melody, before 'D-Funk' drops a heavy bass kick and dystopian atmosphere. The album closes with the aptly named 'Freakazoid,' an explosive track that leaves listeners begging for more. Dokes' expertise in crafting atmospheric and emotive soundscapes is clear throughout the album. His ability to fuse elements of jazz, techno, and house creates a unique and immersive experience that will appeal to fans of all genres.

Review: Reissued via French label Rotorelief on its 35th Anniversary year, Chance Meeting on a Dissecting Table of a Sewing Machine and an Umbrella is the debut album of trailblazing noise and avant-garde musician Steven Stapleton. Catapulting Stapleton's macabre alias to success in the thin breath of just three through-composed drone pieces, this sonic statement was unparalleled at the time (1979), with its unusual mix of prepared tinkerings, feedback drones and cog-jams famously causing Sounds magazine to momentarily abandon their five-star rating system to specially award the album five full question marks. Absurdly sadistic, the album is also known for its original publication of the infamous Nurse With Wound List in the liner notes, which listed the entirety of Stapleton's influences going into the album's making - some acts named therein were so obscure that many fans speculate as to whether they were invented. An exemplary work of outsider music - or at least, one that is infamous by proxy to the more baneful works of the outsider music archetype - get ready to hear all things spectral over the more sustained tones: chains rattling, chairs squeaking, shakers shaking, even monologues in French.

Review: Five years after their debut full length and two years after the 'Monolith of Corrosion' EP, Nightmarer are finally back with a new album. Inarguably the band's most diverse work to date, 'Deformity Adrift' ventures far beyond the conventions of the already unconventional genre of dissonant death metal, without surrendering an ounce of viciousness. A 32-minute sonic behemoth, the record is at once confounding and ravaging. Strong nuances of industrial and doom metal can be heard throughout as the record's nine tracks conclude fittingly with a suffocating wall of sound that leaves its listeners bruised, battered and shaken.

Bach's violin concertos, in collaboration with Jeffery Kahane and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. The much-celebrated fiddler laid down a stunning, full rendition of the concertos, all recorded at the Colburn School Of Performing Arts and which added to her huge repertoire. This stealth reissue from the classical music giant bolsters Hahn's rep once more.

Review: New adventure video game Dordogne sees the player immerse themselves in a unique narrative universe, embarking on a vibrant journey intent on awakening the senses and evoking warm memories. This complementary soundtrack by the Supernaive brothers effortlessly evokes said oscillation between melancholy and wonder. As we play as Mimi, exploring the precious recollections of childhood and the times shared with her late grandmother, a soothingly subdued soundtrack arrests the ears as we retrace those steps. With past meeting present and adult choices confronted, the French sibling duo, normally specialists in lounge pop and downtempo electronica, do thorough justice to the game's sentimental and familial themes.

Review: Berlin-based, Canada-born experimenter Aidan Baker tinkers often with slowcore, drone, and avant-garde darkness, both solo and with such groups as Nadja, Hypnodrone Ensemble and WERL. His latest, Songs Of Undoing, aims at more of a "deconstructed" grunge/slowcore palette, stripping almost every facet of the style back to reveal an impressively unpolished backbone. Musings on reckoning, alienation, and ruination resound across an album of doomy quietude - never going so far as to indulge huge cathartic moments and instead preferring to rest in waveringly gothic, ruminatory recesses.

Review: The amusingly named Lebanese free improvisation trio A Trio, formed in 2002 by Mazen Kerbaj Sharif Sehnaoui and Raed Yassin, are considered by some to be the oldest and most active free improv group in the Arab world. With such status comes ever-more impetus to release new music; The Binding Third is their first full-length LP since 2014, recorded live at the Sound Disobedience Festival in Ljubljana, Slovenia in 2019. Composed of two long-form pieces, we hear the trumpeter, reed player and double bassist respectively make use of extended and prepared techniques, in turn to create dizzying drones, textures, and noises that challenge the conventional roles of their instruments. The music is intense, dynamic, and unpredictable, reflecting the trio's 20+ years of experience and experimentation.

This is totally contemporary music unifying heart and brain, whether in the form of original compositions or re-constructions of Whitney Houston, Louis Cole or The Beatles. Review: Jeff Mills throws a spaghettifying curveball with latest EP ‘The Trip’. Themed after the terrifying notion of entering a black hole, and likening this to the vicarious yet no less enjoyable illusions of grandeur that might go hand in hand with attending a Millsart rave, ‘The Trip’ has been routinely billed as “the world’s first cosmic opera” (in its performance incarnation), and attempts to sonically answer the question as to what exactly happens when we cross that fateful event horizon, in ambitious, live-jam-born-recorded form. Via eight cosmic suites of terrifying techno wizardry (we’d expect nothing less from the Belleville ‘blazer), Jeff Mills brings his originally live, light-eating vision to vinyl, nailing the cosmick perceptual horror of being "sucked in” through dust-bitten repetitions, descending mind-melts and dissociative-detuned fugues - the latter is most intriguing; ‘When Time Stops’ is the track of choice for exploring Mills’ least repetitious and most improvisatory tendencies.

Review: Identity Theft is the solo electronic music of Michael Buchanan, commencing in 2011 with the album Night Workers. Having previously released on labels such as Oráculo Records, Treue Um Treue, Record Label Records, and Katabatik, here he continues to astonish with the atmospheric, brooding and liturgical electro opus, Omnia Vitas. Rooted in Düsseldorf-school electro with strong leanings towards the more abstract krautrock origins of the genre, Vanitas continues to flesh out the themes of surveillance and paranoia - themes endemic to his music from the outset - albeit this time he also works in samples culled personally from the posthumous sonic archives of several departed (and unnamed) producer friends.

Review: Henry Mancini's iconic score for The Pink Panther is an amazing example of the power of music to define cinema. Released 60 years ago, the album's unforgettable melodies have become synonymous with the film and its bumbling detective Inspector Clouseau. The catchy 'Pink Panther Theme' alone remains a cultural touchstone, widely recognized and streamed. Mancini's genius infused the score with a whimsical yet sophisticated flair, mirroring the film's comedic tone. The album's Grammy Award-winning success cemented its place in popular culture, earning a well-deserved spot in the Grammy Hall of Fame. The 60th Anniversary Edition celebrates the timeless brilliance of Mancini's Pink Panther score. Pressed on vibrant pink vinyl, it offers a nostalgic reminder of the film's enduring charm and the enduring power of Mancini's musical genius.

Inspired by the legendary Channel One Studios and Roots Radics band, Pachy Garcia set out to recreate the sonic experiments of Scientist, King Tubby, and Lee "Scratch" Perry, with the result being an album that captures the spirit of early dancehall, rub-a-dub, and rockers styles, all hypnotic rhythms, deep basslines, and ethereal melodies. With a focus on dub techniques and a heavy emphasis on the rhythm section, Pachyman In Dub is a must-listen for fans of reggae music.

Review: Phoenix, Arizona based modern death metal brutalists Gatecreeper return with their highly anticipated third full-length Dark Superstition. The first album from the band since 2019's Deserted showcases an embracing of both the hyper-violent grindcore-indebted cuts from their 2021 mini-LP/EP An Unexpected Reality, as well as the brooding doom-metal opus 'Emptiness' that bookended the project. Recorded at God City Studios with Converge guitarist and iconic producer Kurt Ballou, while citing influences from melodic death and gothic metal acts such as In Flames, Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride and Anathema, the long gestation period has resulted in the band's most sonically sprawling work to date. Newly signed to Nuclear Blast, the decrepit stage appears to be set for Gatecreeper to finally seize all of their bubbling potential by the horns and throat. Mark our words when we say Dark Superstition will be one of the definitive extreme metal contributions of 2024.

Review: Modern glassy ambient forefronters Motion Ward present their latest masterpiece from two standout centre-stagers on their roster, Ulla Strauss and Ultrafog. Having not collaborated on a full-length record before, the one is billed simply as “two individuals from faraway (journeying) the world together”. "(They) were given many tiny gifts from the surroundings. Then the music came out as a matter of course, as if a thing was being put in its right place.” Sonically, this translates to a pristine, sampledelic blissout, verging on the nascent road-trippy electronic-shoegaze motifs that Motion Ward have found themselves exploring as of late; and echoing the kind of alien ambient guitar-dubs that could recall Fennesz or Bibio, lest they weren’t also mixed up with the kind of contemporary vocal chopups and glassy, aerated refractions that continue to carve out this extended crew’s current noble standing. Our highlights; ‘Lame Mart’, ‘Kind Zo’.

Review: The Belgian modern classical folk band's 12th album is the soundtrack to a series of short, abstract animation films by Rudy Trouve, who also acted as a creative director during the recording process. These took place according to conceptual guide lines set by Trouve. Sometimes the starting point was a play on words or a random chord sequence, sometimes a specific atmosphere, but the playing field was always kept deliberately limited. Hence, the musicians were forced to build a musical structure with minimal means, with the pieces then cut up, sampled, drastically restructured and pasted together again, a method that had been applied earlier on the retrospective album Hineininterpretierung (2017). The result is a work of art that is both visually and musically stunning. The music is often sparse and atmospheric, with a strong emphasis on texture and space, it's hard to categorise but is definitely a unique and captivating album.

Released in 1982, the score combines Carpenter's signature synthesizer melodies with Howarth's electronic expertise to create a hauntingly atmospheric soundscape. Tracks like 'Chariots of Pumpkins' and 'Halloween Montage' are iconic examples of their collaborative genius, instilling a sense of dread and unease. The pulsating rhythms and sinister melodies enhance the film's suspense and terror, making it a standout in the realm of horror soundtracks. Punk/Hardcore
Review: Since signing The Exploited in 2021, iconic metal/punk label Nuclear Blast have gone to lengths to reissue the three latest albums from the legendary Edinburgh oi-punks, who by the arrival of 1987's Death Before Dishonour, had moved towards an even more aggressive form of crossover thrash hardcore. This direction would continue to be pursued throughout their 90s output, with The Massacre in 1990, Beat The Bastards in 1996 and most recently (although 21 years and counting currently) 2003's vicious statement of latter-day intent Fuck The System. Coming seven years after its predecessor as well as marking the band's seventh overall full-length, it's the only album to date to feature guitarist Robbie Davidson and bassist Mikie Jacobs, while the project and its subsequent tour cycle would be marred in controversy due to the band being refused entry into Montreal, Canada in October 2003. This led to the cancellation of the show and a full scale riot of 500 fans smashing windows and destroying cars, ultimately leading to their Mexico City date also being cancelled for safety reasons. Is it really shocking to imagine that's how The Exploited's fans would react when they felt that burned? Juno don't condone, we're just not that surprised.

Review: Amidst the global pandemic, Dead Rebellion marked a milestone for Strung Out's 35-year journey. The album embodies a mid-tempo heaviness, prioritizing melody over speed, reflecting societal issues and personal struggles in our technology-driven world. 'Cages,' the lead single, balances melodic and heavy elements while delivering a poignant message. Dead Rebellion symbolizes the band's resilience and evolution amidst challenging times, showcasing their musical prowess and thematic depth.

Review: A rare and funky reissue of the 1971 album What's Up Front That Counts, by The Counts, the trailblazing Detroit funk outfit who recorded for Westbound Records. Notably, the album's title track has been sampled countless times by hip-hop greats, including Queen Latifah and Eric B and Rakim. Though the record has been out of print on vinyl for nearly two decades and it now comes reissued via Ace.

Review: South African Warrick Sony is a ground breaking composer who was behind the Kalahari Surfers project which now gets a vital spotlight courtesy of Emotional Rescue. This compilation shows how effortlessly eclectic his sound was - from jive rhythms to jazz, tabla to political speeches and much more in between. A Hindu pacifist who was once conscripted into the South African Defense Force, he founded this group as a way out getting his ides out there, calling on other musicians as and when he needed them. It was the first radical white anti-apartheid pop in South Africa and as this vital collection shows it explored polyrhythms, slow motorik, dub sound collage and even a goofy cover of Nancy Sinatra.

Review: Steely Dan's latest reissue campaign spans many classic albums, including their fourth LP Katy Lied, but here we focus on The Royal Scam, their fifth. Once more produced by in-house maestro Gary Katz, and again a grand and sprawling recording project with tens of contributors and credits, the album deals thematically with the loose story of Owsley Stanley, the psychedelic drug kingpin and father of the modern soundsystem. Compared to their previous projects, The Royal Scam was known for its more paranoid and intense sound.

Review: Norwegian trumpeter Arve Henriksen and Dutch pianist Harmen Fraanje strike a fine balance on their latest collaborative jazz record Touch Of Time. Warm and tender throughout, this is a back-alleyed melanchole, with its stark counterpoints between piano and trumpet somehow eliciting the audio-sensation of more instrumentation than there is - a gestalt of ghosts. Gradients of emotion wax and wane like the strange blue lights that are often visible when one’s eyes are closed. Produced by Manfred Eicher at the Auditorio Stelio Molo in Lugano, this is fine recording indeed.

Review: On their second album Desperado, the Eagles went deep into the idea of the American Wild West. With their country twang, Glenn Frey and Don Henley's songs were already cowboy-friendly, but this album took the concept further. Released in 1973, it captures everything you love about the Eagles from shit-kickin' rock n' roll like 'Out of Control' facing off with sentimental classic 'Tequila Sunrise'. After all this time it's the title track which remains one of the band's most beloved songs - everything a lonesome man on the prairie needs to hear after a hard day and a hoedown.

Review: When Keyon Harrold lists the influences that he turned to during the creation of his rich and evocative new album Foreverland, he cites the likes of Radiohead, Fleet Foxes, Fela Kuti, John Coltrane, and, for a second, he becomes vulnerable; the list is too basic, too serious-music-listener-starter-pack. But, out of that moment of insecurity, he spins an indelible flex: "You are what you eat, and I have a pretty strict diet in dope shit. Taking in Keyon Harrold's career to-date, it's clear that the 'world-class trumpeter' (Essence) and composer is very serious about that diet. He's a jazz musician but in the most expansive sense, working with a list of dream collaborators: generational legends Keith Richards and Diana Ross; rap stars like Mac Miller and Nas; neo-soul icons Erykah Badu and D'Angelo; and modern soul stars Black Pumas and Leon Bridges. His circle of regular collaborators is formidable and includes his music industry mentor Common (who hired him for his first touring gig), his New School classmate Robert Glasper, and GRAMMY winners Maxwell, PJ Morton, Gregory Porter, and YEBBA. Even apart from its compositional intricacies and stylistic innovations, Foreverland is a triumph of resilience and empowerment. "What will be said when you're gone?", says Keyon. "If you're not living life - getting beat up, getting your heart broken, winning, losing - what are you doing? What about your life can people learn from? If you don't put yourself in the ring sometimes, there won't be anything." On Foreverland, Keyon takes life's challenges head-on - and emerges, in both music and in life, with a renewed sense of purpose.

Review:  A whole bunch of Weldon Irvine albums are being remastered and reissued at the moment, which will be music to the ears of spiritual jazz fans - literally. The American composer and pianists was one of the big names of his time and reals don labels like RCA and Strata-East as well as his own label. Young Gifted & Broke has never been on vinyl before as the recordings were only discovered in the early 2010s. It was a musical that was released in 1977 and inspired by the Black Civil Rights anthem 'Young, Gifted and Black,' which Weldon had written with Nina Simone. Talents like Marcus Miller joined the recordings which as can now be heard are magnificent to say the least.

Review: Emotional Response returns with a second volume of its All Trades compilation which is named after its own NTS show. It is just as vast both in terms of style but also the eras it spans with a mix of dub, new wave, slow motion electronics and plenty in between. Tolouse Low Trax kicks off with the filthy dirty and seriously heavy dub glitch of 'Ossia' to provide an early highlight before the likes of Al Wootton get percussive and tribal with 'Altai' and HLM38 channels some African Head Charge on another devastating dub cut. Later on, London's Good Block brings a little more light and sunshine with their lovely 'Strong Relax.'

Review: The Libertines is one of those bands people either seem to love or hate, a bit like Radiohead, but for very different reasons. They certainly defined a specific period in UK music culture back at the turn of the millennium whether people like it or not, and after years apart they have reconvened as more mature men for a fourth album, All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade, which managed, according to frontman Pete Doherty, to come together in "a moment of rare peace". Lead single 'Run Run Run' is a great indication of what to expect - some racuous energy with great songwriting.

Review: American minimalism pioneers La Monte Young and Marian Zeeler released their second album in 1974, when they were already well-established in the US avant-garde. This serves as a document of their work and ideas at the time, with two very different sides on offer. The first side was recorded at a private concert, in which Young and Zeeler's voices interact with sustained drones and some occasional trumpet from Jon Hassell and trombone from Garrett List. The second side focuses on a bowed gong study, ruminating on the particulars of frequency and harmonics and their potential effects on the listener and the space in which they're heard.

Review: Lenny Kravitz's Blue Electric Light is a trip into his signature sonic realm - namely a world of blues-infused rock. It is his 12th album overall and has been preceded by the 'TK421' single which was well received by fans and critics alike. With all the usual gritty guitar riffs, soulful vocals, and pulsating rhythms, Blue Electric Light exudes a timeless cool from the man who is often said to do the same. Kravitz's lyrics resonate with introspection and a touch of mystique, creating compelling atmospheres that mix classic rock influences with more modern sounds to make it another standout record in Kravitz's diverse discography.

Review: Blue Cheer are the cult choice for those who adore their seminal hard rock from the end of the 60s. They might not have reached the fame of Hendrix, Zeppelin and the like, but they were just as influential and daring in their approach. After the wild impact of their debut album Vincebus Eruptus they followed up in quick fashion with Outsideinside, which legend has it was so loud in places it had to be partially recorded outside. Whatever the case, there is more than enough psych-tinted blues rock brilliance to sink your teeth into on this 1968 album, which gets repressed in blue and shows the band at their scuzzy, squalling best on anti-classics like 'Sun Cycle'.

Review: In celebration of the 20th Anniversary of Naruto, 22d Music top up their excitations with a new, symphonic rendition of the music of the famous anime series. Beginning with a eureka moment shared between musician Jerome Leclercq and licensing company Mediatoon, the initial idea was to recreate the entire soundtrack for a live-streamable cinema concert in celebration of the imminent anniversary. Originally composed by Toshio Masuda, Naruto's OST is at its core a fusion project, blending traditional Japanese folk instruments such as the Shakuhachi and Shamisen with the familiar stylings of pop rock, effortlessly portraying the series' coming-of-age angst and ninja-starring energy and delivering it to an international audience, all while bottling the essence of the musical heritage of Japan. Reinterpreted by a 50-strong orchestra, and accompanied by an original montage of the best moments from the anime, this is a must-have for all the Naruto ultrafans out there.
