Digital - "Zion" (5:57)
Digital, YT & Solo Banton - "Bad Bwoy Talk" (3:21)
Review: The mighty Digital introduces a brand new Function off-shoot Function Dubz with a focus on ragga/vocal based jungle. Naturally, it's a hefty launch release: "Zion" is straight out of 1993, all head-twisted amens, crazy-sharp edits and evocative dub vocals. "Bad Bwoy Talk" brings us back to the future on a sleazy bubbly halftime roll and full badman chats from YT and Solo Banton. A full jungle history lesson in two tunes; few artists do it like Digital.

Eddie Russ - "Zaius" (7:24)
Incognito - "Zaius" (7:23)
Review: Expansion has a couple of great reissues landing at the moment, both of them on eco vinyl 10" and heavily limited in quality. So you better move fast because this is another one featuring a classic track and a separate equally brilliant version of it. The a-aide from Eddie Russ gets us back in 1976 for his 'Zaius', which is a textbook jazz-funk jam that is from his rather rare 1976 LP See The Light'. It has never been released as a single before, until now. On the flip, you will find esteemed Brit funk outfit Incognito's cover of the tune from 2008 which is just as good.

Eddie Russ - "Zaius" (7:22)
Incognito - "Zaius" (7:24)
Review: Last year, the Expansions label kicked off a wonderfully intriguing 10" series featuring classics from soul music's rich canon complemented by contemporary cover versions and so far it's seen Blue Note troupe Quasimode tee off against Johnny Hammond and Bembe Segue challenge Norman Connors. A third edition duly arrives and hints Expansions are really enjoying the creative challenge the concept allows them with the jazz funk classic "Zaius" from Eddie Russ joined by a cover from the celebrated UK funk veterans Incognito. Originally appearing on the 1976 LP See The Light, "Zaius" is a blinding example of why Russ is described a master of the keyboard and it's complemented well by Incognito's B Side cover which appears on vinyl for the first time. Don't sleep!

Review: It has been hard to keep up with the high rate of - high quality - relates from the Shall Not Fade camp this year. They have covered plenty of stylistic ground and now offer up a bit of everything from the ever relabel London-based producer Lawrence Guy. His today 10" opens with a big bit of celebratory, hands in the air house. 'Your Good Times Are Here' has subtle acid, happy chords and driving drums that all equate to a breezy and feel good dynamic. 'I Know You Feel Sad' is a sombre interlude with heartbroken chords and vocal snippets next to lingering trumpet motifs and 'Yeh Good, You?' then gets back to building good house vibes. A second tender piece comes in the form of 'Mutual Disappointment Is A Terrible Thing' and its plaintive pianos.

Review: Fresh in the chem trails of his Bandulu release, the inimitable Bengal Sound crash lands back into our psyches with his disarming, not-of-this-world take on 140 music. "Young Skeleton" arrives just in time for Halloween, scaring the dickens out of us with its warped humanised tones, dusty atmospheres and distant chimes. "Coroners" takes us from the graveyard to the morgue... But with these hazy arpeggiated trinkles and eerie shimmers are we stepping towards the light or simply waking up? That's for you to work out.

Indica Dubs & Conscious Sounds - "Humble Dub" (3:25)
Review: 2020 marks a decade since Sukh Gill started the Indica Dubs project, which now incorporates an online record shop, soundsystem and record label. Naturally Gill features prominently on the label's latest release, which begins with a soulful chunk of digital reggae goodness from Danny Red, "You No Better". Gill joins forces with Conscious Sounds to deliver the "Better Dub" rework, where echoing guitar motifs and delay-laden vocal snippets ride a denser and weightier revision of Red's groove. The partnership continues on side B, where the "Humble Thyself" version - an instrumental take on the EP's lead cut - is followed by the heavier, wilder and more sub-heavy "Humble Dub".

You Can't Fight (original remastered version)
You Can't Fight (Riccio rerub)
Review: Fans of classic film will be all over this reissue. Jimmy Chambers' "You Can't Fight It" was written for John Carpenter's brilliant soundtrack to his classic 1976 horror flick Assault On Precinct 13. However the song only ever made it into the Italian edition of the film for some reason, despite it being a genius blend of Chambers' soulful vocals, parping funk horns, synthesizer motifs and delay-laden beats. This reissue is timely - it was only ever issued on 7" in the late 70's - and comes backed with a superb rework from Italian producer Riccio. He wisely emphasizes Carpenter's synth work and the snappy but dubwise beats, layering those horns and Chambers' brilliant vocal atop. Stellar stuff.

You Can't Beat It (feat Chennez McKenzie)
It's Got To Be Music (feat Andre Espeut)
Review: This 10" should be of interest to anyone who likes their music soulful and upbeat. Produced by Juan Laya and Jorge Montiel, it features two delicious but contrasting cuts. "You Can't Beat It" has all the makings of a 21st century boogie anthem. With its parping horns, slick synths, fat slap bass and celebratory vocal, it sounds like the sort of record Teena Marie or Gwen McRae would have released back in '82. "It's Got To Be Music", by contrast, is deeper and sleepier, Andre Espeut's seductive vocal matching the sparse, low-slung soul groove. While not as thrillingly upbeat as the A, it's just as good.

Ordinary Things
Review: Ten Thousand Yen do it right again with the future flex of rising producer XXXY housed in a delightfully bespoke designed ten inch sleeve and limited to 350 copies for the world to consume. "You Always Started" will bear obvious comparisons to early Joy Orbsion - i.e. before he went all house - but that's no bad thing as it's drenched in a soulful emotion that builds quite delightfully towards the hair raising crescendo. The guile with which XXXY teases out the vocal sample deserves a golf clap. Equally impressive is the psychedelic house thrust of "Ordinary Things", chopping up the vocal over a skipping deep bump, with a swathe of burning tripped out melodies the backdrop to purple synth flourishes and cheeky whoo samples. There's a simplicity to the production but it's overwhelmed by the thickness of sonic emotion XXXY achieves. As well as being very pretty this release comes with a code to download the tracks!

Skepta - "Man" (Yung Bingles & Lil Chimpz Rebax) (2:44)
Review: Bristol / Manchester duo 'Yung Bingles & Lil Chimpz' (guess who?) go toe-to-toe on a one way rocket to cheeky version central. Two strictly limited vinyl only grime / jungle anthems, both tested around the world in the most demanding raves on road - "Ready Mngo" takes Joy Orbison's 2009 anthem and gives it the jungle rodgering it always deserved, while "Man" takes a dash of Skepta and takes him to the gulliest of north quarters. Grab it while you can, man don't hang around.

Si Hecho Palante
Review: Victor Axelrod dons his Ticklah guise for more forward-thinking Latin creativity. Building on his rich repertoire (which includes the Dubside Of The Moon album and Afrofunk band Antibalas), each cut tickles a different part of the central American underbelly... The fire is ignited with a digidub-style samba standard, all spacious, wriggling with far away vocals, "Mi Sonsito" is a little more upbeat with its scuffling rhythm and sing-along chorus and "Si Hecho" concludes this neat release with a rustic lament that's produced with 21st century depth and scope.

Review: Jeff Mills is on a serious roll with his Millsart releases, indulging the mystical, jazz-tinted sound of his Every Dog Has Its Day series across a run of 12"s which have included the outstanding Inner Eye, Don't Ask Me Why and Morning Glory in the past year alone. The original version of 'Vernacular Objects' appeared on a 2020 digital release, and now Mills has re-versioned it alongside three new tracks which continue the heady brew of simmering percussive meditation and elevated keys hitting subtle discord and curious harmony interplay for that extra-terrestrial Millsian touch.

Review: Firecracker Recordings' Unthank label has been a decidedly intermittent concern since it's eye catching arrival back in 2010 with the Parris Mitchell mangling antics of Berlin dwelling Estonian producer Bakey USTL. It makes for somewhat poetic reading that the label's sixth release should usher in the return of a producer whose last apparent production credit was a contribution to the Fudge Fingas cut "Fidgety Friends" way back in 2007! Quite what the West Yorkshire based Denaji has been doing in the subsequent years is not clear, but your focus should be on his contributions here, with the Wuhti 10" quite sublime. The title track and "Dharma Dharma" are the sort of star gazing boogie and fizzing deep house that fit snugly into the overarching Firecracker sonic canon and do check the wondrous remix of "Wuhti" from Norwegian Sex Tags mastermind DJ Sotofett.

Review: Back in 2018 Soreab debuted on Beat Machine with a heavyweight EP that effortlessly joined the dots between grime, techno and breaks. This belated follow-up - a rare 10-inch EP containing four tracks - is similarly sizable, offering killer club cuts that pitch up grime rhythms to suit peak-time dancefloors. The absolute standout is Parallax collaboration "Wrinkles", a bustling assault on the senses in which the MC's flows rise above a wicked and wayward, sub-heavy backing track. It's accompanied by the moody roller "Watchme" as well as two flipside remixes: the melodious, hazy and otherworldly goodness that is the Basic Rhythm Remix of "Wrinkles", and a deep, chiming Benton take on "Watchme".

Ma Spaventi - "Wrecking"
Aroy Dee - "Mr Floyd"
Review: There's something strangely appealing about M>O>S Deep releasing music on a 10" record; the compact size and the neat packaging are complemented by the fact that each piece of music is so stripped down, raw and full of sub-bass that they can barely press it onto such a small and lovable piece of wax. And in keeping with releases from 2AM/FM and D'Marc Cantu, the tenth release for M>O>S Deep - a split EP with Ma Spaventi and label boss Aroy Dee - features two tracks packed with so much raw power that the grooves struggle to tie them down. The record opens with Spaventi's "Wrecking", a stripped down track consisting almost solely of growling acid lines. The whole piece of music seemingly hangs on a menacing and aggressive 303 workout set at a snail's pace and interspersed with crisp hi-hats and a kick drum soaked in reverb. Aroy Dee provides balance with the flipside and his peculiarly titled "Mr Floyd". In typical Dee style the track features an unending parade of blissed out pads, gentle textures and layer upon layer of deep house. It gently nudges you along, revealing more depth with each passing minute, allowing the full-bodied percussion to gently build the tension before it melts to nothing amongst his perpetually translucent synth work.
