Review: Was anyone ready for one of the most talked-about albums of the year to be Andre 3000 going ham on the flute? Probably not, but in a post-reality world New Blue Sun just slots right in. Of course the legions of Outkast fans are going to be split when an artist of such prominence takes a wild swerve into experimental musical pastures, but for those with an open mind or a pre-existing appreciation of ambient and leftfield music, this album is an easy sell. Teasing the tension between acoustic and electronic, ancient and hypermodern, grounded and ethereal, Andre has been bold and honest in presenting this album to the world and his gamble has paid off.

Review: It was big news this year when hip-hop legends De La Soul finally made all of their music available to stream on digital platforms. That move was backed up by them also dropping a load of reissues of their finest albums and now we have, for Record Store Day/Back Friday, this special coloured vinyl boxset featuring their most iconic LP, 3 Feet High and Rising, on seven individual 7"s, making them perfect for DJ deployment. The box set also includes a funky slipmat making this a perfect Christmas gift for the hip-hop head in your life.

Review: Tatsuo Sunaga did a superb job when putting together this legendary collection of Japanese jazz tracks. They all originally came on the cult TBM aka Three Blind Mice label which has a hardcore following in the Far East and is just as popular with those that know over in Europe. The tracks included here are suitable for both long time jazz heads and the newly inquisitive listen alike with plenty of lush sounds from Sunao Wada Quintet Plus 1, Tatsuya Takahashi & The Tokyo Union and Masaru Imada Trio Plus 2 amongst many more.

Review: Voices From The Lake is the pairing of Italian techno craftsmen and sound sculptors Donato Dozzy and Neel. They came together to do a live show at the famed Labyrinth festival in Japan and that's what gave rise to this new now seminal album. It's a deeply meditative and dubbed-out world of delicate synths and rolling drums that change only slightly and slowly but manage to keep you utterly locked in for the duration. It's pure techno that has been remastered for this new edition across eight sides of wax. An absolute modern classic for sure.

Review: Yet more futurist jazz tones and rhythmic harmonies come straight from the mind of Kahil El'zabar, the musician and bandleader whose avant-garde practise centres on the artist's own black African roots. Channelling every instrument from kalimba to 'spirit bowls', a near-endless line of El'zabar's ancestral spirits are invoked, as dual tributes to spirituality and city life are laid bare actoss a chilled-out but grandiose 9 tracks, from the opening 'A Time For Healing' to the tributary 'Eddie Harris'.

Review: The ever divisive Kanye West dropped this 10th album Donda on streaming platforms back in August 2021. He has already served up an expanded 'deluxe' version on CD and now it comes on limited edition vinyl. Less over the top than its predecessor, this record continues the iconic artist's infatuation with blending cutting-edge contemporary hip-hop (and nods to his musical roots in the '90s rap scene), R&B and his beloved gospel, resulting in a grandiose and entertaining set that makes use of a huge roll call of guests and collaborators *Lil Baby, Lil Durk, Lil Yachty, Roddy Ricch, Young Thug, Jay Electronica, Travis Scott, The LOX, Kid Cudi, Fivio Foreign and many more.

Review: By 1997 Photek had already marked himself out as a wild card in the rapidly evolving d&b scene. He'd had three years to carve out some frankly dizzying displays of break editing wizardry and such was the innovation on display there just had to be an album coming. Modus Operandi smartly stepped to one side of the dancefloor, offering a smoky reflection on where jungle and d&b had got to, highlighting the compatibility between half-speed downtempo and breakneck drums and bringing inherent jazziness to the forefront of the beats, which avoided all the usual cliches. It's a masterpiece which hasn't dulled with time and here it's getting a heavyweight reissue across three slabs to ensure the loudest cut. All the better to blow your mind with, all over again.

Review: First released in digital and CD formats via Sacred Rhythm, 'Progessive Roots Evolution: A Song For Healing' hears Joaqin 'Joe' Claussell's indelible style of long-form spiritual house music re-flaunted to especial somatic ends. Intentionally crafted as a piece that bridges the needs of both the music and dance communities to whom Claussell is mutually close, this is a suite divided into multiple sections that feed on one another; they appose elements of samba, jazz and house, with ambient interstices and even ruminative piano meltdowns ('Healer', 'Heloise'). This ultra limited yellow LP edition is the audiophile's preference, its dynamism best flaunted on the floaty but driving 'Cosmic Arts' mix.

Review: There are an awful lot of great records in the J Dilla's catalogue, but few can match the consistent quality and coherent construction of Welcome 2 Detroit, his 2001 breakthrough album. Designed as a love letter to his home city with a sample palette and blend of styles to match, it saw the late producer and a string of then largely unknown local MCs showcase their vocal talents over some of his best ever beats. This lusciously expansive 20th anniversary box set does a brilliant job in expanding on the original album, with the 12 included "45s" pairing vocal mixes with instrumentals, unreleased cuts and occasional remixes. The included hardback book is brilliant, too, and packed with first-hand accounts of the creation of a now iconic LP.

Review: Alex "Omar" Smith has never been one for modesty, so we shouldn't be too surprised that he's called his latest full-length - his fifth in total - The Best. To be fair, he is rather good at producing high-grade deep house, and here unveils another eleven gems. Interestingly, he's recruited an impressive cast-list of collaborators and guests, including Norman Talley, Kyle Hall, OB Ignitt and, most surprisingly of all, Bristol-based Tom Bug. Highlights are plentiful, from the dusty afro and blues influences of the tribal "Chama Piru's", and hazy, Rhodes-heavy vocal cut "AhRevolution", to the hip-wigglin' disco-house influences of "Seen Was Set", and retro-futurist, Inner City style Divinity hook-up "On Your Way".

The album itself is incredible, with fantastic musicianship, arrangements and vocals, while the cast list - which includes original electrofunk outfit Unlimited Touch, Peech Boys main man Bernard Fowler, Honey Dijon, Cindy Mazelle, Moodymann, Kerri Chandler and his son Nico - is similarly impressive. It's a great product, packed with brilliant music: a fitting finale to this portion of the ongping 'Expansions NYC' project.

Review: Louie Vega remains a towering presence in house music 30+ years after making his early mark. As a solo artist, he deals in soulful, Latin-tinged and musical house sounds that are lavish in arrangement and often made with real instrumentals. The Vega boss now serves up a bumper collection of previously unreleased tunes across no fewer than ten sides of vinyl. There are collaborations, remixes, demos, dubs and reworks along the way and the range in impressive - from deep and triable joints to shuffling samba sounds and back again, this is a vital collection from a real house master.

He was only 22 years old at the time but already well celebrated for his skills and this is a superbly seductive album with stalwarts Hank Jones on piano, Kenny Burrell on guitar, and Art Taylor on drums. There are a number of highlights for smooth jazz lovers such as the gentle and meandering 'Dear Old Stockholm' and more upbeat drum work of 'The Theme.'

This one focusses on Andrew Hill, who was often said to be one of the most distinctive pianists and composing talents in the game. This session was first recorded in 1963 yet for some reason remained unrelated until 2003, when it finally made it to CD. Now presented on vinyl it features a fine ensemble including Woody Shaw and Dizzy Reece on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, Joe Farrell on saxes, and more on bass, horns, drums and tuba. The results are hugely moving.

It's a record packed with highlights, not least a powerful ballad on 'Little Girl Blue', or the hard bop swing of 'My Girl Shirl' and 'Lex', the last of those two in particular features a soulful solo from Mobley that really stays with you. It finds post-bop and free jazz fused together with young trumpet sensation Charles Tolliver, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Roy Haynes, who all played original compositions by Mclean. The spirited sound was utterly new and fresh at the time and still makes a big impact all these years later, with real detail observed in the jacket graphics, printing quality and superior LP mastering quality. At times tender and reserved, at others exultant, this is a prized piece of jazz history.

Review: It is no secret that we here at Juno HQ are huge fans of the one and only Alex 'Omar S' Smith. He is a machine when it comes to making music and barely a year goes by without another expansive new album form the Detroit badman. Here comes this year's and it has all the things you would hope for and expect: raw, unfussy but infectious house with dusty drums and 80s synths. Review: 20 years is a long time in clubland, but Watergate has embodied the age old phrase that time flies when you're having fun. The Berlin institution has represented a catchy end of the tech house sound throughout its tenure, both on the dancefloor and through its long-standing in-house label. Now they celebrate their big birthday with a cute compilation taking in such massive names as Henrik Schwarz, Sasha and Anja Schneider alongside the more niche names who made major breakthroughs thanks to the club's support. Pressed on three records and featuring a mammoth 18 tracks, there's a lot of bang for your buck if you can't get enough of that Watergate sound.

Review: Seminal collection! Undercover Agent AKA Splash AKA Darren Ellis goes under the Suburban Base spotlight as the foundation label curate the best, most influential and most sought-after dispatches on sister labels Splash and Juice Records. With the gamechanging, forever-reloadable 'Babylon' from Splash (original AND the crucial Trace remix) taking the lead and setting the scene, we're then treated to a whole range of blueprint jungle schematics under various aliases and guises of Ellis including his MTS partnership with Darren Hickey and rare material with The Kriminal. Highlights across this extensive remastered sets include the rowdy Bristol-esque pummelling of 'Rebels' and the absolutely slamming remix of 'Hard Disk' by a very young DJ Zinc. Splashback!

Review: Sub Focus has as far back as we can remember always been a 'big name' in drum & bass, but it's only now that the London-based music producer cements it as such with a slice of contextualising nostalgia. Evolve is his new LP, charting a new feel for 1990s influences and various musical homages to the acts and songs that contributed to his sense of musical evolution and maturity as a musician. Nods to the Chemical Brothers and early jungle and hardcore are conveyed through contemporary collabs with the likes of CamelPhat, Gene Farris and LOWES.

Review: We love an album with a nice specific remit and they don't come much more specific than The Love Magician Archives - Disco - New York City 1978-79. Vol.2. It is the latest project on Past Due to involve Weeks, who signed with the label back in 2019 and since then his work as a singer, songwriter, musician, and producer has been showcased for all and proven what a key player he was in the New York disco, boogie funk and house scenes and beyond from the late 1970s to the 1990s. It came on several different labels and as part of various different groups and now comes a second collection of it that is just as good as the first.

Review: In the field of spiritual jazz, there are few albums as seminal as Pharoah. Originally released in 1977 and serving as a landmark for the genre as well as Pharoah Sanders himself, it remains a towering work of understated beauty, using negative space and patient pauses as potent as the notes played. Sanders sadly passed on to the next realm in 2022 amidst a wave of renewed appreciation for his work, and Luaka Bop have taken on the task of reissuing this otherworldly classic in fine style. As well as the original album, a second record features two previously unreleased live versions of 'Harvest Time', and the package comes with a 24-page booklet featuring a wealth of additional material to round out the experience of one of the all-time greatest jazz albums.

Review: Away from all the bluster about trip hop. Maxinquaye ranks as one of the greatest albums to emerge from the UK at any time in history. Tricky was already well entrenched in Bristol's musical community following his tenure with Massive Attack, but he delivered something more potent and daring than the smooth, soul-rooted sound of his counterparts. There are spiky edges and imperfections, beats that sound like they're about to buckle at the knees and that unmistakable, hoarse flow. That's not even mentioning the stunning voice of Martina Topley-Bird serving as a fierce sparring partner for Tricky's blunted flows. Heart-breakingly beauty and a dank, street-level reality enmesh in sheer perfection from start to finish, and now this landmark album is getting the 'Super Deluxe' treatment across three records with all kinds of additional mixes, outtakes, demos and more.

Review: Despite his considerable contributions to drum & bass over many decades as a DJ, producer and promoter Grooverider has released only one solo artist album and that is 1998's Mysteries Of Funk which now turns 25 years old. Produced in conjunction with Optical, it gets a special, limited edition anniversary reissue across six sides of vinyl including standout singles 'Rainbows of Colour' and 'Where's Jack The Ripper.' It came a decade or so after Grooverider established himself alongside long time partner Fabio with sets at the UK's best illegal raves before then starting their own seminal Rage night at Heaven.

Review: Dom & Roland's Industry set new standards when it was released on Moving Shadow in 1998. This was a vision of d&b as a cinematic vessel like never before, pushing the limits of sound design in a style which has been standard practice ever since. Steely and intense, it's as fresh and relevant now as it was when it first laid waste to the scene in a blizzard of industrial strength drums and dystopian moods. Newly remastered and now spread across five plates (compared to the still considerable four it originally arrived on), this is a landmark slice of drum & bass history given the ceremonious reappraisal it deserves.

Review: Jazz funk classics don't get any better than this... Released in 1977, James Mason's only album Rhythm Of Life gets the full repress it deserves. A full-flavoured document of Mason's musical and songwriting abilities and the bubbling fertile creative ground he worked in is displayed here in all its glory. From the quirky offbeat rhythm and overall carefree funk of the title track to lounge-lazing soul of "Funny Girl" to the sweaty, frenetic Off The Wall level fire of "I've Got My Eyes On You", this is an immaculate example of Mason's contributions to jazz, funk and soul.

Review: The fascinating (and wholly appropriate) concept behind Ostgut Ton's fifth anniversary compilation was conceived by British born, Berlin based artist Emika. On a night out at the label's legendary affiliate club Berghain she noticed the walls were moving and giving off their own frequencies, such was the ferocity and energy of the music and revellers within. And so Funf was born; with Berghain and Panorama Bar's extensive family of artists given four gigabytes of field recordings taken from within the club after hours - be it humming fridges, creaking doors or unseen footsteps - and asked to make a track using these sounds as their foundation. The results are absolutely stunning, with a disparate yet inexorably linked selection of tracks that range from subtle soundscapes (Emika's "Changing Room") to experimental dubstep (Fiedel's debut production "Doors To Manual"), minimal house (Dinky's "Twelve To Four") and banging techno (Shed's "Boom Room"). Split across seven 12"s, this is an absolutely unmissable slice of contemporary techno history.

Review: It's hard to know where to start with this one. Weighing in at a whopping six 12"s and some rather lovely packaging, Arkives Analog 1993-2010 is a super-sized Richie Hawtin career retrospective and then some. The timing couldn't be better - last year Hawtin revived the Plastikman pseudonym for a world tour that seemingly hasn't stopped for 12 months, and he has professed delight at presenting his seminal music to a new generation of electronic music lovers. There's absolutely no doubt that the Canadian has made some terrific techno, ambient and electronica in the last two decades, and Arkives boasts long-forgotten remixes to dancefloor classics, with the likes of Matthew Dear, Moby, Green Velvet, Dubfire, Francois K, Mathew Jonson and Carl Craig all appearing. In a word, essential.

Review: A musical polymath like no other, the late Arthur Russell turned his hand to a bewildering variety of different musical styles, from avant-garde torch songs to pounding disco, yet all imbued with his otherworldly songwriting skill and richly emotional voice. This posthumous compilation, however, collects together the more oddly accessible material that he created, in largely acoustic and country styles. The cowboy hat on the sleeve may be strangely appropriate here, but more than this, the blend of plaintive melancholy and freewheeling charm can only leave the listener wondering how Arthur Russell managed to avoid mainstream success in his all-too-brief career. A strange and beguiling transmission from a unique talent.

Onyeabor's debut LP Crashes In Love is present in it's originally mixed stereo form and along with four other albums, Luaka Bop make space for an additional 7", two booklets and MP3 download codes for all the music.

Review: Just in time for Christmas comes this deluxe celebration of the career of Nigerian mystery man William Onyeabor. Intetest in the born-again Christian's output has been high since the release of last year's superb Who Is William Onyearbor? compilation and documentary. This simply titled nine-CD box set gathers together material from his nine album releases (eight studio albums, plus an alternate version of 1977 debut Crashes In Love), telling the story of his unusual career in full. An accompanying booklet fleshes out the story further, while retaining the mystique that's long accompanied his exotic, Moog-heavy take on African pop and dance music. For those with a passion for African music, it should be an essential purchase.

Review: There's no doubt that The Odyssey was a labour of love for its' creator, former Northern Soul DJ and current Harmless Records boss Ian Dewhirst. His aim was simple: to put together the single most authoritative and expansive retrospective of that most British of underground dance cultures. Fittingly, he's more than succeeded; the 175-track, eight-CD collection boasts not only a wealth of popular "Northern" hits, but also plenty of sought-after obscurities. As if that wasn't enough to get the juices flowing, the box set also features two DVDs - an excellent documentary about the scene, and extensive interviews with key scene players - plus a 160-page book containing excerpts from Mike Ritson's definitive Northern Soul book, "The In Crowd". In other words, it's superb.

This time they really done a number on us with this 808 Box release, a jaw-dropping fifty-tracker sealed in a trendy DJ shoulder bag tagged with the most infamous of all drum machines on the planet..! The music comes from all corners, and we see familiar faces laying down some truth on those beats; check the gear by Patronen, CPU, Alex Stark, Luke Eargoggle, Sync24, Tau Sagittarii and UHU. This comes as eight transparent 12" and twelve white ones. Bang!

Review: Wow. Germany's Vinyl on Demand are on a roll in recent months, thanks to a string of valuable reissues and mouth-watering special editions, such as this latest juggernaut from legendary industrial band, Clock DVA. In case you weren't aware, the outfit were a Sheffield-based post-punk band who later branched out into early forms of techno and the like, but this anthology actually predates those years and takes a look back at the band's formations. Inside, you'll find a collection of recordings by Adi Newton made between 1976 and 1977, and also the Future recordings, the trio made up of Newton, Martyn Ware and Craig Marsh before they developed into Clock DVA. FYI Future pretty much invented synth-pop, it begins and possibly even ends with these guys. This is an essential piece of vinyl.

Review: Basement Phil's Basement imprints proudly drop their first release in the form of a remix compilation - a rather unexpected format but nonetheless enticing! This is a 26-track monster release by Phillip Wells aka Basement Phil who put out some of the most forward-thinking hardcore and jungle back in the early 90's when all of this fuss began! As the title implies, the compilation is a retrospective of sorts, where tracks from the golden era of UK rave are reworked and rebooted, placed next to contemporary sounds form the hardcore continuum. If you're a love rof the jungle variety then this is definitely worth a listen - essential!

Review: Some seven years on from their last album, Invaders Must Die, The Prodigy returns, seemingly as angry, frustrated and overheated as ever. The Day Is My Enemy sees Liam Howlett and his band of merry men revisit the glory days of Fat Of The Land, smashing together a typically in-your-face blend of rugged electronics, rock-tinged riffs and bombastic beats (including, on "Rebel Radio", what appears to be the breakbeat used on "Firestarter"), with similarly full-throttle vocals. There are a couple of notable guest spots - including men-of-the-moment Sleaford Mods on the standout "Ibiza" - but for the most part it's business as usual, with Howlett conjuring up music that should keep their legion of fans happy whilst reasserting their authority as World leaders in rock-tinged EDM. Review: Here's something conceptual from everyone's favourite veteran French DJ/producer: an expansive box set containing tracks from his five thrillingly varied 2014 EPs, a previously unheard 12" (entitled Honey, I'm Home), and a shedload of brand new remixes from the likes of Marc Romboy, Traumer and Husbands. Furthermore, the box set marks the surprise resurrection - for this release only, apparently - of Garnier's once-lauded F Communications label. Musically, La Home Box is rather typical of the French legend, including as it does blistering techno, throbbing house, quirky electronica and bumpin' instrumental hip-hop. If that's not enough to get you reaching for your wallet, he's also included a bonus CD and numbered poster. Tres bien!

Review: What a decade 1970-1980 was for French music! Featuring well-known Gaelic cosmic pioneers such as Serge Gainsbourg and Jean Michel Jarre and slightly less prolific space cadets such as The Atomic Crocus and Quartz, this is an immaculate document that celebrates and applauds some of the most influential music to have emerged in Europe during the 70s. Listen to tracks such as Space's "Magic Fly" or Pierre Bachelet's "Motel Show" and you'll hear three decades of disco and synth music that followed. Immaculately compiled and presented, this is one history lesson everyone would benefit from digesting. Bon Voyage!

Review: Well, well, this is a far too dope box set collecting eleven of Kenny Dope's classic breakbeats for your seven inch shaped needs. The Juno review team already have several of these heaters in our collective record horde but since the box set arrived there hasn't been a day passed without an admiring glance thrown in it's general direction. For those unfamiliar with the likes of "Supacat" and "Gunshot", they are fine examples of the Jeep Beat sample heavy instrumental hip hop sound Dope dabbled in during the early nineties. It's the presence here of both the thunderous "Blood Vibes" and the Minnie Ripperton sampling "Get On Down" that makes this box set nigh on essential.

Review: For Detroit techno there is Juan Atkins and Carl Craig, for dub techno there is Basic Channel and Rod Modell aka DeepChord. The Echospace label remasters a selection of tracks from a blitz of EPs DeepChord released in 2001. It's a rare opportunity to bask once more in the rhythmically-weighted and dissolvent ambience of Rod Modell and Mike Schommer early releases. All tracks featured on the triple marbled vinyl package either traverse well below the realms of charted sub-sonics or ethereally waver high above the clouds, secluded from dynamic tension, exploring subtle variations in pitched based harmonics instead. A must have for the dub techno lover.

Review: Having signalled the end of their Originals series in fine fettle with a wonderful selection from the New York based producer and selector Alex from Tokyo, Claremont 56 send out the end product of what must be one of the most onerous tasks in recent years. This rather dashing 5xLP box set house two tracks a side from each of the ten Originals compilations issued since the series commenced back in 2008. Aside from the sticky issues of actually legally licensing these tracks for a vinyl release, there's also the factor of having to whittle out just two songs from each of the compilations. Regardless, Paul Mudd Murphy has done a splendid job with inclusions such as Donna McGhee's superb disco cut from the Rong Music volume or the undervalued Anthony Watson gem from the final installment getting the approval of the Juno review team.

Review: Sven Vath's label belatedly celebrates the landmark of passing the hundred release mark with this triple vinyl box set. Given the scale - 3LP complemented by expanded 2CD - and those involved it's no surprise that the Cocoon 100 Box Set took that bit longer coming together and those of a techno and minimal persuasion will undoubtedly salivate at this tracklisting. Everyone from Ricky Villalobos to Lawrence and Nick Curly via Loco Dice and Extrawelt contribute previously unreleased productions and the mood is as diverse as you'd expect from this list. "Arild" finds Villalobos in typically restrained mood, whilst Dial boss Lawrence conjures up a hypnotic production in "Serpentine" that has a touch of the STLs about it. Deep acid, rowdy drum tracks, abstract and psychedelic productions follow (Secret Cinema's "Supertek" is a notable example) and that's just on the vinyl. Sven mate you're spoiling us.

Review: A very special Record Store Day release! XL unearths a collection of recordings that were made during the making of Gil's last album I'm New Here. Complete with a collection of his most memorable tracks, recorded without any overdubs and barely any studio complexities, it's a stark document that carries the weight of Scott Heron's troubled soul with raw, unfettered beauty. Limited to 3000 presses - never to be pressed again - this really is a truly thoughtful and respectfully created release that pays homage to one of music's most enduring individuals in every way.

Review: Previously presented as the 808 Box, Fundamentals continue their super-limited collectivist spirit with the 808 Bag. Comprising over 40 examples of contemporary electro, from artists as diverse as Hadamard and Scape One, the whole package is curated and created with serious care and attention. Spread across eight EPs, expect to be massaged by the icy synth fingers of Dpo's "Mitosis", expect to do some serious body popping to Classic Decay's "Lumiers Dans La Nuit" and anticipate some serious dark audio deviance on Solvent's "Light & Lens". Limited to only 80 copies, tributes to the most important machine in electronic music don't come much more exciting or exclusive than this!
