Review: La Casa Tropical out of South Africa takes us back to 1986 when enigmatic artist Vumani Mthethwa served up his enduring debut album Isiqedakoma. The record kicks off with what could be a Chicago house tune from the same era thanks to its big piano chords, and then it takes in the super fun and playful singles 'Black Mampatile' and 'Guy Fawkes.' Truth is, all of these tunes have big, bold basslines and standout melodies that lodge deep in your brain as you shake your limbs to the analogue beats. Colourful and charming, this is a perfect party record with its own sense of style.

Review: Sometimes it's just too difficult to contain our excitement; we're quaking in our boots at news of Khruangbin's next release, with the Texan three-piece this time lending their alt-indie-funk mastery to vocal frontage by Leon Bridges. The humorously titled lead single 'B-side' is emblematic of their stated aim here - to redefine "how people perceive Texas music i that beautiful marriage of country and r'n'b i and really paying homage to that." The sonic result? Bubbling bass and wahhy riffs, over a ghostly and misty relaxers' beat. Its hook digs into our thighs deeper than a Sheriff's steel spurs, and fittingly, it's music video is themed after a 19th Century western town.

Review: Oumou Sangare is an icon of Malian music, and African music overall. She first came to attention in the early 90s with songs descended from wassoulou traditional hunting songs. She's remained a creative and visible force ever since, and now she's back with her first album of new material since 2017's critically acclaimed Mogoya. Timbuktu fuses Sangare's Malian sound with elements of blues, folk and rock to create a timeless body of work which winds up all her own. You'll instantly be transported into her rich and rooted world of sound, where she uses her position as a hugely influential African musician to push for women's rights amongst other socially-conscious themes.

Review: Marcos Valle's second album, the 1983 self-titled masterpiece, is one of Brazilian music's many stone cold classics fusing as it does MPB, pop, soul and easy listening with plenty of American influences thanks to the artist's time living in LA. Valle's old brother Paulo Sergio and the legendary Lincoln Olivetti produced the album with a fine cast of guests like Rosana, Serginho Do Trombone, Robson Jorge and Oberdan Magalhaes adding their own vocal and musical flourishes. Standout tunes include Brazilian-boogie cult-classic 'Estrelar' (which was actually co-written by pianist, keyboardist and record producer Leon Ware) while the artwork itself is also well worthy of your attention.

Review: Hong Kong five-piece Lucid Express aim for something between dream pop, shoegaze, washed out, and electronic downtempo, producing a glitzy and emotional sound produced with the utmost quality. Their first-time album 'Floret' is a 500-copy exclusive, and while it marks the band's first commercial LP, is still packed with something of a DIY spirit. Just like the band's expression of intent - 'lucidity' being something that sounds bright and radiant - tracks like 'Venture' and 'Lime' are packed with muted emotions and uncontrollably ecstatic arpeggiations.

Review: It has been hailed as "the first great guitar album of 2023" by at least one taste making and era-spanning UK music publication. Dublin's extraordinarily good, yet still somehow not world famous outfit The Murder Capital have certainly packed this full of bold ideas, welcome surprises, and enviable musicality, making us next in line to laud over the package.

Of course, this is only their second album, which puts two things into context - we shouldn't expect groups to break the world with one LP, if they want a chance at longevity, and anyone who can make an amazing long-player-number-two clearly means serious business. Big, powerful, moving, danceable and purposefully aimed directly at the heart, this is indie rock with touches of synth and pop, not to mention a few nods to early-Killers theatricality.

Review: Netherlands-based 030303 Records is back with a fifth installment in its various artists series. As with the previous four editions, this is high-class electronic music pure and simple. Caramel Chameleon kicks off with a good time mix of cheery melodies and chattery drums, then Perseus Traxx brings his signature analogue murkiness to the lo-fi house trudge that is 'Something More Than This.' Elsewhere you will find quietly optimistic cuts like Raving Kid' restless 'Edgware Acid' or the dream house reveries of Kreggo's 'Hearthpulse' amongst many other varied treasures.

Review: Always brimming with partystarting energy, Brooklyn Funk Essentials' motto "funk is what you make it" has carried them for three decades. Coming up in Brooklyn and finding a local fanbase for their electricity on the big smoke's live stage, said electricity later translated to a deluge of full-length LPs showing off the best way to represent funk in the present day. Intuition is their latest album, released by fellow fun-lovers Doraodo. Reflecting a recent line-up change (Alison Limerick and Desmond Foster now pairing up on lead vocals) this project is boundlessly bouncy and confident, spanning bog-standard freak funk to headsier nods to styles like bossa nova and dub.

Review: Harlem & Irving label partner Brian Kelly assumes his Supplement alias here for a new and limited edition 12" that features two of his tasteful and challenging sounds. Kelly is always out to disrupt and subvert and does so with aplomb here as the a-side title track starts with a whisper but soon grows with layers of found sound, piano, percussion, and ethereal voices. It then collapses before reemerging with melodic and tonal guitars and pulses. On the flip, the same tune comes 'Revisioned' but is much more cold and distorted, edgy and urgent.

Coming hot off the heels of several live TV appearances, live shows and awards shows, the album now comes as her confident debut, and blends Stax-inspired funk with Southern blues, amid emotive, marching, organic arrangements, together primed to do the utmost justice to Lang's voice, which bursts with flavour as a full-bodied midrange. By far the biggests splash on the album is 'He Said/She Said', which is the wackiest and most energetic of the lot.

Goose, for example - the Connecticut indie folkers with a penchant for jammy freakouts - have unveiled the Undecided EP, a four-track studio collection of live favorites. The album tends towards the instrumental side of things, with climaxes emerging out of minimal slow jams, culminating in great brown washes of guitar and sumptuous, melodious crooning. Or honking, if you will; emotive and cathartic stuff.

As such it is now a contemporary genre in their hands and hot on the heels of their last 7" on Barbes comes this follow-up with plenty of carnival overtones. 'El Saleroso' is a slow and swaggering tune with rich layers of percussion and stunning melodies all topped off with a Spanish vocal. 'Proteus' has more contemporary synths next to the traditional instrumentation and overflows with colours and cultural charm.

Bassist, composer and sound producer Kenichi Ikeda is the man behind the project and US vocalist Erik Rico is on the full album. First though is this teaser single on At Home Sound out of Japan. It kicks off with a 2022 update of 'Freaky Power' that has sliding drum rhythms and a high speed funky bassline chasing them along. She crafts elegant and emotive music mainly using her voice and cello, plenty of effects units and draws on ambient for her inspiration. What results is atmospheric and intimate music that is utterly enchaining as this album on 4AD proves across ten tracks that come after she spent an intensive period studying Chinese dance forms. Lead single 'Echo' is a pop song about ancestral trauma that walks a thin line between respect for the past and the hope and freedom of a new future. It's captivating indeed.

The LA-based artist says of the record that "I realised as I was piecing it together that it's a song cycle about trying to live while also feeling called to make music. The album addresses that duality ably with wry observation and a mix of the micro- and macroscopic realness Donaldson is so well-loved for. This record is heavier than the last with more fuzzy guitar textures and heavier lines throughout. From lo-fi to college rock, the influences here are varied and the songs are both beautiful and dazzling.

His highly-anticipated debut album Breathe Deep comes on Caroline International and shows just why he has become such a revered voice in the last jazz movement having already worked with the likes of Shabaka Hutchings, Moses Boyd and Yussef Dayes. He calls on a wealth of collaborators here, too, including Joe Armon-Jones and Sons of Kemet, and they all add extra chops to a record that, says the artist, "is a pretty broad presentation of who I am musically and my journey to get to this point."

As ever the references are far and wide, from world music to deep house, cosmic ambience to synth music. The tracks are stuffed with subtle details and a rich overarching musicality that makes them as good for focussed headphone listening as it does an early evening dance. Now pressed up to this limited 45rpm, they are super vintage soul tunes with all the lo-fi production and unbridled vocal passion you would expect. The original lineup included vocalist Garce (Simon) Allard, guitarist Tristan Garel-Funk, bassist Cliff Silver, drummer Nigel Pollard and keyboardist/saxophonist David Wood. They released their first 3-song 7" EP "Cle" followed by the "Colourless Dream" single both in 1981 and "Lost In A Moment" 7" single in 1982. They released two studio albums, Epic Garden Music (1982) and Feeding the Flame (1983), before temporarily disbanding. In 2016, Dark Entries released Lost In A Sea Full of Sighs, a collection of the band's early work, but the record incorrectly included 1988 versions of the two songs from the "Lost In A Moment". For this repress, the tracklist has been corrected to include the original 1982 recordings of "Lost In A Moment" and "The Tightrope Touch".

Review: Rather bizarrely, Fela's London Scene was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in 1971, but didn't get a UK release until the mid 1990s. This is the first time it has appeared on wax since. While the legendary Afrobeat pioneer and his equally revered backing band, Africa '70, may have been in unusual surroundings, the music showcased on the album was pure Nigerian Afrobeat gold. With Fela in fine form on the mic, and Africa '70 providing typically punchy, horn-heavy backing, tracks such as "E Gbe Mi O", "Buy Africa", and "Fight To The Finish" are every bit as good as anything they recorded in their Lagos studio. "Who're You", with its' changes of intensity and gentle progressions, is particularly good.

Review: Before he called time on his lengthy career in 1982, legendary ska trombonist Emmanuel "Rico" Rodriguez became a regular contributor to the Two Tone label, recording two albums for the Coventry-based imprint. Both are now 40 years old - hence this reissue of the second, Jama Rico. Unlike its predecessor, That Man's Forward, Jama Rico looks further afield for inspirations, with the trombonist's usual easy-going reggae and ska instrumentals being joined by a handful of tracks that draw inspiration from West African rhythms and spaced-out jazz-funk. As a result, it's arguably one of his most vibrant and interesting solo sets, while the inclusion of the Special AKA on final track 'Easter Island' highlights his link with the Specials (famously, Rodriguez performed on 'Message to You, Rudy').

Nine tracks spanning the electronic diaspora, we're treated to everything from warm jacking house ("Brothers & Sisters") to industrial strength techno ("Lethwei") to schizoid bashment ("T.M.K.F") to divine dubbed-up haunted house ("The Chant") and all manners of club flavours in between. Review: Amongst collectors of post-punk era cassettes, Solid Space's sole album, 1982's Space Museum, has long been a sought-after item. While scarce and hard to find, the demand is largely down to the music contained within. Combining bright and spacey synthesizers with cheap drum machines, fuzzy guitars and vocals musing on science fiction and isolation, British DIY musicians Matthew Vosburgh and Dan Goldstein (previously both of of Exhibit A) created something surprisingly magical and alluring despite its lo-fi creation. For proof, check this first ever vinyl edition from Dark Entries, which thrillingly also contains two previously unreleased cuts from the duo's archives.

Review: This "Special Edition" of Lord Echo's recent third full-length, Harmonies, seems to be aimed at DJs. Whereas the original pressing contained the same tracks on one piece of wax, this version stretches the same tracks over two super-loud, heavyweight records. Formatting aside, the album itself is something of a head-in-the-clouds, feet-on-the-floor treat. It features the Kiwi producer working with a range of collaborators - Tony Laing of Fat Freddy's Drop and regular studio buddy Mara TK included - to serve up intoxicating cuts that brilliantly fuses reggae, dub and rocksteady rhythms with elements borrowed from disco, Afro-soul, Afro-funk, spiritual jazz and, more surprisingly, techno. It's a hugely vibrant and entertaining set, offering a good balance between dancefloor vibrations and more laidback concoctions.

Review: Now approaching a half-century of artistic life as the closest we have to a living personification of rock 'n' roll, Iggy Pop nonetheless also continues to carry himself with more class and style than most any lifer that springs to mind. Yet it has to be said that few were expecting the cadaverous king to make his greatest album for thirty of those years, and this is what 'Post Pop Depression' his collaboration with a dream team involving luminaries such as Josh Homme, Dean Fertita and The Arctic Monkeys' Matt Helders is exactly that - a wry, restrained and ice-cool meditation on carnality and mortality without cliche or rehash, this album is all primal satisfaction and righteous revelation.

Reflective, soulful, touching and dynamic, Gal guides us through a sunset story of ballads ("Volta"), bossas ("Milho Verde") blues ("De Maior Importance") and beyond with an all-star troupe of musicians including Gilberto Gil, Arthur Verocai and Dominguinhos. Remastered to a touch and complete with the original cover that was banned by the Brazilian dictatorship at the time, this is the first time India has been reissued with care in decades.

Review: Soundway surpass themselves again with this wonderful reissue from the Ghanaian artist Rob, who released two albums back in 1977 for the West African Essiebons label. Rob was a seasoned musician in the 70?s, having recorded and toured with many well known bands. The album is a somewhat Spartan, brooding affair where less is most definitely more as slow burning, hip swaying cosmic funk drenched compositions are offset by wonderful punchy brass arrangements. A slow burning pulse is present throughout with highlights being ''Loose up Yourself'' and the irreplaceable carnal conquest anthem '' Make it Fast, Make it Slow''. Songs of celebration sit alongside other pieces of introspection and socially conscious topics; some might criticise the odd duff notes and occasional raw vocal edge, but this just adds texture to the overall performance and vibe. Without question one of the best reissues of 2012.

To Brazilian music fanatics, Sao Paolo isn't always associated with the country's best or most traditional music, but this compilation brings together a sublime collection of artists and songs from different yet related genres. There are several highlights on here, but we're particularly vibing on the warm, tranquil psych rock of "Karina" by Vicente Barreto, Rodrigo Campos' more traditional strain of Brazilian tropicana on "Velho Amarelo", Thiago Franca's space jazz track "Abdu", and the absurdly hazy hippie excursion called "Obatala" by Meta Meta. World release of the week!

Review: Unsurprisingly, Aromanticism - meaning to have little or no romantic attraction to others - is exactly the idea Moses Sumney explores on this stunning debut. Having written the majority of this album's lyrics in the solitude of remote north American cabins, Sumney's songs about loneliness and distance feel natural and sincere. Throughout 'Aromanticism' Sumney shows off his affinity with vocal acrobatics, leaping from his rasping lower register to achingly dulcet falsetto. Both in his instrumentation and as a vocalist, Sumney strikes a pitch-perfect balance between acoustic and digital, exhibiting his ability to blend the two. Sumney blends passages of spoken word, neo-soul, broken-beat, and the vocal harmonies and movements, cascading with gospel precision, that shone on his 2016 EP 'Lamentations'. 'Aromanticism' is a powerful and heartfelt opening statement from an artist well worth keeping an eye on in the future.

Review: Anyone who has seen one of Egyptian Lover's riotous live shows will confirm the role that classic cut "I Need a Freak" plays in proceedings. During performances, he attempts to get female members of the audience going by altering the lyrics to suit the occasion - a tactic that usually gets a rapturous response. Despite being recorded in the '80s (and eventually released in 1994), the track has lost none of its energy or appeal; it should be in the collection of any genuine electro enthusiast. There's another treat on the flip in the shape of the rarely seen extended version of 1984 cut "My House (On The Nile)", which is every bit as essential as the A.

Review: It's easy to forget that Justice were once one of dance music's most hyped acts, gracing magazine covers and gate-crashing the pop charts with a succession of crunchy, electro-house bombs. Times may have moved on, but the Parisian duo remain big news. Woman is their first studio album for five long years, and smartly moves between quirky, radio-friendly pop and thrusting club workouts. In the latter category you'll find the spiraling, low-slung, Italo-disco-with-balls of "Alakazam", the classic Ed Banger growl of "Chorus", and the vintage Daft Punk madness of "Heavy Metal". While these are impressive, it's actually the more downtempo songs - "Love S.O.S" and the dreamy "Close Call" included - that arguably stand out.

Review: Back in 2017, Thievery Corporation's Rob Garza and Eric Hilton performed a now legendary concert in their home city of Washington D.C in which their band was backed by a fully-fledged orchestra. Three years on, they've decided to commit the orchestrated alterations to album. The results are largely superb, with the pair's slinky dub, lounge music and hip-hop influenced grooves and traditional guest vocals now coming accompanied by orchestral arrangements that veer from the subtle and sympathetic to the swooping, soaring and grandiose. Some of the versions of Thievery Corporation classics are particularly potent, with "Weapons Of Distraction" and "Lebanese Blonde" - one of their most celebrated early cuts - standing out.

"Medaho" is their debut album and it more than lives up to the hype. With Kaleta's variously fuzzy, sun-kissed and flash-fried licks to the fore, the band trips its way through nine mostly dancefloor-friendly workouts that wrap heavy funk instrumentation, rousing horns and Afrobeat style organ riffs around polyrhythmic drums that recall the distinctive swing of Tony Allen. It's a stylistic blend that guarantees results, as the sheer volume of highlights triumphantly proves.

Review: Since turning up in the Windy city a few years ago, spiritual jazz singer, clarinetist and composer Angel Bat Dawid has become a stalwart of Chicago's vibrant avant-garde scene. Here he delivers a debut album that should, if there's any justice at least, propel her towards international superstardom. Both her melancholic clarinet lines and distinctive singing feature prominently throughout, alongside sparse percussion, occasional Afro-futurist synthesizer motifs, harp and guitars - all of which Dawid plays herself. It's a virtuoso display that more than confirms her status as one of the spiritual jazz scene's most authentic voices.

Review: We're used to seeing pools of 7"s from the Mr Bongo label, so to have this new compilation of rare and original music from Mali truly is the warmest of Easter treats for us. And so it should be for you, too. David 'Mr Bongo' Buttle has really gone to town with this one, and it feels like he's on a wining streak at the moment; that recent compilation from Cape Verde, out through his Ostinato imprint, really caught us by surprise a few months back. This compilation is every bit as exciting and revelational, and perhaps even more sophisticated than anything else the man has reissued over the years. This comes as no surprise given the fact that Malian music is considered to be the pillar of African experimentation within the music realm, and this feels absolutely true on this particular selection of songs. A subtle funkiness engulfs the entire release, except that each track has its own story to tell, whether that's through slow chanting, fast-paced jazz funk, or even primitive forms of drum-machine boogie. Most importantly, however, there is always something true and characteristic of Africa at the core of these songs, and this LP will no doubt live a comfortable existence way out into the future. Excellent.

They are part disco, part house, part tribal in make-up but the results are entirely new - ritualistic dances for late night sermons. The opener might be the best of the lot as 'Tamburi Parlanti' pairs lumpy drums and rugged guitar riffs with rising synth magic a la Theo Parrish. 'Timido' is another steamy bit of body music from deep in a humid jungle and that continues with 'Where Is Juanito'. The flipside is every bit as joyful, with spiritual Afro sounds and beatdown making for a vibrant and varied EP.

Aselefech Ashine and Getenesh Kebret perform a captivating duet over the distinctive sound of Ethic jazz - fans of Mulatu Astatke will instantly find themselves on familiar ground here, but it's the singers' voices which truly shine. While Beauties was a hit upon release, it was soon quashed by the Derg regime, and has since been out of print. It's been carefully remastered and presented with its stunning artwork intact - a true gem for anyone enthralled with the unique sound incubated in Ethiopia in the mid-20th Century.
