Review: Rush Hour have released some killer reissues in their time, and this mini-album from Ben Cenac of Newcleus fame, released under the Dream 2 Science moniker in 1990 is no exception, sounding like a conscious response to the warm, soul-flecked offerings of contemporaries Bobby Konders, the Burrell Brothers and Lamont Booker. Amazingly, Dream 2 Science still sounds remarkably fresh, 22 years on. The production, in particular, is terrific. While many house records of the period sound clumsy and dated, there's a timeless quality to the intricately programmed drum machine rhythms, the drifting chords, warm analogue basslines and cute vibraphone melodies.

Klein & Mbo - "The MBO Theme" (6:02)
Warrior - "The MBO Theme" (9:29)
Review: During a record digging trip to South Africa a year or two back, Rush Hour co-founder Antal stumbled on an obscure local cover of Klein & MBO's Ron Hardy and Larry Levan favourite, "The MBO Theme". The Warrior version, which was recorded at some point in the early '80s, is a little slower and breezier than Klein and MBO's original, with even finer fretless bass flavours and the track's famous melodies re-played on some particularly spacey synthesizers. Helpfully, the Klein & MBO version is on the A-side, so you can easily compare the two: Warriors' little known cover is definitely our pick of the pair.

Review: Helmed by Kid Batchelor and Keith Franklin, Bang The Party were one of the first UK groups to capture the acid house explosion as it found a foothold in the legendary RIP parties and other seminal early spots. Their sound bridges the gap from the prior rare groove warehouse scene and gives it a sweaty Chicago injection, and it's captured brilliantly on this, their breakthrough debut record from 1987. There's a strong soulful edge to 'I Feel Good All Over', while 'Jacques Theme' has a dreamy, surreal tint, and 'Release Your Body' channels a little Motor City flair in its twitchy synth lines and drum programming, but crucially this was one of the first indications of house and techno finding a distinct character across the pond ahead of the wider house culture that would blow up in the years that followed. Truly pioneering music.

Midnight On Roadbow Road (6:23)
Review: Leon Vynehall's stunningly picturesque "Midnight On Rainbow Road" was one of the undoubted highlights of Gerd Jansen's second Musik For Autobahns compilation, which was released in the autumn of 2015 by Rush Hour. Here, it gets a deserved single release, with the original - a hypnotic, driving-inspired blend of fluid electronic melodies, a wispy percussion and Jonny Nash style glistening guitar lines - being complimented by a brand new "Beat Edit". This adds a slowly unfurling, head-nodding rhythm that takes the track further towards Detroit Beatdown territory. In essence, though, it sounds like an early '90s ambient house jam. That's no bad thing, given that Vynehall seems to have emphasised the sun-kissed beauty of the original in the process.

Review: Having given the Dream 2 Science album the wider audience it richly deserved earlier this year, Rush Hour dig out another NYC garage classic from the archives of Ben Cenac for a much deserved reissue. Unlike that album, this Sha-Lor record Cenac recorded in collaboration with vocalists Sharmelle and Lorrie back in 1988 gained wider success, becoming a Summer Of Love staple. It's not hard to see why "I'm In Love" proved so enduring on the A Side Caught Up mix either, with the duo's vocals still retaining a power to move some 24 years on, while Cenac's stripped back bass heavy production is NYC garage at its finest. This being Rush Hour, there's also the bonus of a previously unreleased instrumental version occupying the flip.

Review: Lars Bartkuhn sonically portrays his recent relocation to Brazil on his latest ambient / new age LP Dystopia. It's an ironic title for sure, since it hardly sounds like what we'd usually imagine a dystopia to sound like. Perhaps the LP's making could shed some light on this paradox; Bartkuhn's first solo LP for almost nine years, it was born out of two interlinked ideas: a desire to create improvised music without the aid of computer sequencers or an electronic drum set, and a deeply held love of storytelling through sound. It's this revelling in imperfection which perhaps makes the album 'dystopic' - bits like 'Largo' and 'Do You Know How To Get Out' are beautifully rhythmic and driving, despite their apparent lack of computerisation going into the process. Sonically, it's aquatic, malleting, tactile, bubbly, serene.

Review: Niels Nieuborg has long been a player on Holland's live music scene, largely working with ex-pat musicians from Carpe Verde and Surinam. This superb three-track EP marks his first recorded output and includes collaborations with vocalists Americo Brito and Orlando Julius. The latter stars on two up-tempo chunks of boogie-era Afrobeat that sit somewhere between the Moog-driven brilliance of William Onyeabor and the up-tempo urgency of vintage Afro-disco. It's arguably A-side "Nos Magia", featuring Brito's distinctive vocals, that really stands out, though. Spacey and incessantly funky with fizzing electronics, urgent Clavinet lines and crispy Afro-funk guitars, it's not only a killer club cut but also a thing of rare beauty.

Now only does it have Amsterdam's best record shop, but it throws the best parties and puts put the fresh new records from several different genres. next to that of course they also know how to dig deep and unearth vital reissues, which is what they do here with a triple headed Japanese house affair. Katsuya Sano keeps it OG Chicago with his 'I Need Luv', then Junichi Soma offers the analogue depths of 'Ubnormal Life' and Shuji Wada shuts down with more brilliantly atmospheric sounds on 'Endless Load.'

Review: The tireless peeps at Rush Hour launch the Vault Series, in which the Dutch imprint rummages for overlooked and unreleased tracks sitting in a big shed out the back of their Amsterdam-based record store. They kick things off in consummate style, with the hitherto unknown (to us, anyway) Duster Valentine dropping the ace "(My Back Is) Against Wall", which features a killer sample of "The Pressure" by Sound of Blackness. A thick set drum loop works for your attention below the vocals, occasional keys and dusty groove - highly recommended. The heads out there will be delighted to see Aardvarck's instantly recognisable party jam "(Just Washed) That Pig" from a few years back given a sorely needed extension!

Review: The Rush Hour backed campaign to secure wider acclaim for the music of Nebraska aka producer Ali Gibbs gathers apace with this CD edition of a long overdue second album. Anyone who has indulged in one or more of the four Nebraska EPs to surface via the Amsterdam based label will have an idea of what to expect here - a canny melding of classic disco elements and dusted house rhythms. From the opening urgency of "Allahabad" expectations are matched and surpassed, with a dizzying liquefied sound modulating in kaleidoscopic fashion around intricately poised percussion and upwardly rippling bass. Focus hard on the track's progression and you are hooked. The subsequent new productions all captivate in a similar fashion and mark Gibbs out as one of house music's most unappreciated purveyors.

In truth, it's hard to do justice to Amsterdam Allstars' many highlights, tempo shifts and stylistic variations (think slo-mo house to aggressive analogue acid via classic deeep techno and touchy-feely retro-futurism). Suffice to say, it should be essential listening for anyone who loves quality house and techno.

Review: As something of a mainstay in the more upbeat and classy end of techno, UK don Kirk Degiorgio is always a safe bet for a robust, streamlined cut. With both mixes of "Divine Logic" he stays true to form, letting the arpeggios lead the way in a warm and embracing 'Main Mix', but it's the 'Dub Mix' that lights a fire under the same refrain and imbues the idea with a sense of urgency. Immaculately presented, pumping in all the right places and packed full of old-skool charm, this is everything you would hope for from a Degiorgio release. Recommended.

Boing (Hieroglyphic Being Pongo remix)
Review: With Caribou's massive remix of Virgo Four's "It's A Crime" being undoubtedly one of the year's best and most defining tracks, this second EP of remixes have a lot to live up to. Wisely, Rush Hour have elected to tread a less obvious path with their remix choices this time around, thus sidestepping any risk of trying to compete on a similar level, and the results are spectacular. Capracara and Scott Frasier deliver a lightly acid tinged remix of "Lites Go Out", detuning the vocals with sinister results, combining it all with jacking 808 rhythms. Hieroglyphic Being proves an inspired choice to occupy the B-Side with his "Pongo Remix" of "Boing", adding clattering rhythms and bass bounce to what was previously a deep house excursion, creating a dusty, mechanoid monster which bears almost no relation to the original, but is one of the most beguiling tracks to come from Rush Hour this year.

Rainy Day Juno Jam (Legowelt remix)
Review: Following swiftly on from her thrilling debut release for L.I.E.S. the talented Xosar arrives on Rush Hour with the equally enthralling Ghosthaus. The first thing you notice here is the effort that's gone into the release visually, with a clear red twelve housed in a transparent sleeve and complemented by a smartly designed insert. Musically, Xosar matches if not surpasses these artistic standards, continuing the foundations laid down on Tropical Cruize with two productions that are complemented by an equal amount of Legowelt remixes! The title track is suitably spectral, gradually flushing the straight up dusty kicks with spooked out analogue flourishes tinged with sadness and complemented by Xosar's own guttural moans. A similar downtrodden sensation runs through "Rainy Day Juno Jam" which obviously features plenty of brooding Juno flourishes over a sparse downpour of percussive hits. Both tracks are edged towards danceability by Legowelt without losing the elements of Xosar's production that make them so bewitching.

Review: After two excellent entries already notched up on their 13-part series, Awanto3 and Tom Trago return to bring more low-slung letters of house music love. "Hell Of Samba" is markedly darker than the efforts thus far, taking a brutal techno manifesto and re-shaping it to a slow-house track. The manic, cyclical hats and vaporous drones make for a thoroughly unsettling, and mightily effective, atmosphere. "Too Shy" meanwhile shakes things up further with a staggered beat, baroque orchestrations and what sounds like strange beatbox bass stabs. It's maybe not what you expect from the series, but it certainly spices things up.

There's really not much to be said about these peerless productions, the original mix is a stunning voyage through glimmering synths backed by a chugging beat groove, but the unreleased longer edit is the one - voyaging through those gorgeous drums and piano keys like there's no tomorrow! "I Want Your Love" is another masterpiece - slo-mo hip-hop beats mixed in with those killer funk bass lines and the infamous vocals taking you to another dimension.

Review: Rush Hour revisit Resurrection, the raft of supreme unreleased material from Virgo Four, for a streamlined double vinyl version of the five slab box set that is now out of print. By now you should know the story behind Resurrection - the tracks rescued from obscurity, with DAT tapes filled with what are now rightly considered long lost house classics that Eric Lewis and Merwyn Saunders worked on during what was clearly a very productive period between 1986 and 1990. Twelve tracks that veer between early deep house, slinky vocal numbers, next-level acid experimentation and raw, midtempo dreamscapes are slapped three to a side across the 48 inches of wax.

Review: Following last year's well-received Saturday Night Manifesto EP, Recloose continues his association with Rush Hour. "Feels Like Magic" is arguably his best single for some time, a typically swinging slice of winter sunshine that sits somewhere between deep house, soul and future garage. As usual, there are some unusual choices of sounds - pedal steel, anyone - that help give the whole thing a unique, next-level feel. Old pal Carl Craig provides a tough but surprisingly smooth re-edit that's already seen some serious rotations on promo. It's a near-anthemic rub that emphasises the vocal and adds some seriously heavy sub-bass pressure. As if that wasn't enough, bonus cut "UHF" offers a milky mix of bouncy deep house and dewy-eyed Balearica.

Review: When Rheji and Ronald 'Rhano' Burrell dropped their debut album on Virgin Records in 1988, there was little sign that they would eventually become one of the most influential production partnerships in house. Simply titled Burrell, the album offered a slick, radio-friendly mix of 80s R&B, synth-funk/house crossovers and the sort of piano-laden garage house - as it was then called - that was beginning to dominate the clubs of New Jersey. Frustrated by the constraints of working with a major label, they went back underground. With the backing of their management trio of Judy Russell and Frank and Karen Mendez, they launched Nu Groove Records, initially as an outlet for their own productions. But the music they made would not be created with radio airplay in mind, but rather the dancefloors of New Jersey, New York and Chicago. It was a masterstroke. Inspired by the jacking house sound of Chicago, the deepness of Larry Heard and the emotion-rich, musically minded productions of early New Jersey garage pioneers, they proceeded to make music that defied easy categorization. It would quickly become known as deep house. This retrospective from Rush Hour is both well deserved and long overdue. It should be essential listening for anyone with even the smallest interest in the development of house music during a crucial period.

In the early years of the label, the former major label-signed R&B duo created a huge amount of material under a barrage of pseudonyms, much of it genuinely groundbreaking. This timely collection from Dutch diggers Rush Hour showcases much of that pioneering work, from the musically rich deepness of Aphrodisiac and smooth, Detroit-influenced jack of Tech Trax Inc, to the Tony Humphries-ish garage of Metro and the picturesque sketches of N.Y Housin' Authority.

Review: Long regarded as royalty amongst his fellow Amsterdam dwelling peers, this intriguing prelude to San Proper's debut long player for Rush Hour sees Chilean producer supreme Ricky Villalobos called on to rework the title track in his inimitable style. The mere fact of Villalobos appearing on a Rush Hour twelve is further evidence of the label's growing status, and the two tracks here are allegedly the results of three days of San and Ricardo locked in the latter's Berlin studio. At 14 minutes and then some, the A Side "Animal In Dub" is as sparse and tripped out as you'd expect from Villalobos, and is perhaps his best dub techno arrangement in some time - expertly weaving a twisted treatment of San Proper's grunting tones around a cascading groove that descends ad infinitum. This mind bending exercise is complemented by a shorter, floor friendly "Animal In Club" version which in truth retains just as much fully dosed up capacity to drag you down your own particular worm hole as the A Side. An inspired twelve inch pairing!

Review: Steven Warwick makes the move to Rush Hour to share another four cuts of his twee keyboard excursions. It's a diverse affair, not least considering the limitations Warwick puts on his means of production, starting off boldly with "Borderlands". An engrossing melodic hook and deceptive miniscule beat hide well for the fact that a peak-time bass hook and heavy rhythm patterns are just around the corner. "Spacescape" is a perfectly charming cruise through dubby terrain, with a slow disco beat as a guide through the liquid sound effects. "Convergence" takes the form of a primitive Chicago cut from the earliest days, while "The Juggler" gets a bit more frisky with its cheeky plastic organs.

Review: Braiden appearing on Rush Hour is possibly one of the least expected combinations to surface in recent times; more specifically Braiden appearing on any label is surprising, given how quiet the Londoner has been on the production front since gracing Joy Orbison's now defunct Doldrums imprint. A sideline in photography, a smattering of remixes and a prospering reputation as both a club and radio DJ (check his NTS show) means Braiden's been kept a busy boy, though this two track induction on Rush Hour demonstrates there's been loss in production verve. Lead track "Belfry Tower" seems built for submission pounding intent, rhythms gleefully bouncing off each other as a pressurised bassline puts the squeeze on the crunchy textures that attempt to implement some semblance of melody. "Paganini" introduces a whole different slant on Braiden's palette, commencing with a famous singer's ode to the Italian composer who lends his surname to the title which subtly drops into a killer house groove, all expertly layered drum patterns and wonderfully warm and bouncy bass lines complemented by some brilliant echoed usage of the vocal throughout.

Elixir Of Dreams
Review: The guys over at Rush Hour release Xosar's third EP - two, crispy-as-hell floor punishers with lethal doses of drum machine action. Both her previous EP for the label as well as that hot little number on L.I.E.S have turned some heads in the house/techno domain, and Nite Jam prolongs her fine form in 2012. The title track on the A Side is an incredibly chuggy slice of deep techno, complete with a hearty, pounding kick drum and a beautifully delayed set of chords which morph and sway uncontrollably. Over to side B, "Elixir Of Dreams" is one for the percussion maniacs, with those relentless snares cutting fervently through the muffled, haunting vocals which glide below it. Xosar's work just keeps getting better! TIP!

Review: Unsolved Universe marks the debut release of Xamiga, though you should by now be fully familiar with Legowelt and Xosar, the duo behind this project. The feverishly productive pair have been appearing together both on record and live for the best part of a year now, most memorably on the tongue in cheek project Trackman Lafonte and Bonquiqui that has transmitted releases on Creme Organization and L.I.E.S. Xamiga is a concurrent project to those aforementioned surfer house endeavours which has been bubbling away on Soundcloud for the past 12 months and appears to focus more on further exploring the Ghost House aesthetic that runs through Xosar's solo productions. This three track release is described quite aptly by Rush Hour as "music to jack to loudly while closing your eyes softly" and is rumoured to be the first of several Xamiga releases forthcoming on the Amsterdam operation. The title track is a favourite of the Juno office, an endlessly charming paean to floating outer galactic house, but all three tracks are a powerful statement from Xamiga.

Review: Rush Hour precede the release of a Gerd Janson curated compilation of "ambient not ambient" music entitled Musik For Autobahns with a limited one sided 12" pressing of "Erkki", Ame's contribution. Described as a successor to Computer Incarnations For World Peace, the Sonar Kollektiv compilation Janson curated with Jazzanova back in 2007, the forthcoming eight track compilation features all new productions Move D, Tom Trago, Tensnake, Roman Flugel, Motor City Drum Ensemble and more, with the musical focus on industrial and kraut leaning material. "Erkki" is a good primer for what to expect, described by the label as Ame's "modular slambient concept" and sees Kristian Beyer and Frank Wiedemann draw out an infinite procession of warm, experimental loops over a stuttering cosmiche groove. The results are charmingly esoteric and bode well for how the full compilation will sound.

Review: This Tail Of Tears 12" sees WT Records boss William Burnett adopt the Black Deer name for the No Label series that intermittently emits from Rush Hour HQ. The somewhat mysterious No Label series acts as a primer for music that essentially transcends label or genre, and has issued the tape saturated meanderings of Inga Copeland, jagged ragga techno from Aardvarck and the heavily psychedelic electronics of Stellar Om Source. Ths Black Deer record from Burnett certainly adheres to the expect the unexpected ethos of the No Label series, offering a more experimental side to the New Yorker's production palette than last year's exceptional Willie Burns release for The Trilogy Tapes. Burnett himself calls the Tail Of Tears 12" the results of some experiments with "12 string acoustic guitar with effects and synth" whilst Rush Hour call it "sympathetic storytelling for the real Americans".

Gene Hunt - "Sound Drome"
Review: Chicago house heaven here with two tracks from those mythological mid 80s nights at Ron Hardy's legendary club Muzic Box club. First up "Let No Man Jack" is explained by its 'rescued from acetate edit' subtitle. With pitched up diva vocals, brutal cuts and harsh drum machine track, it's a fast and raw stomper -just the way we like it. Gene Hunt's "Sound Drome" is a 13-minute monster which Hardy would have worked til the floor was sore. Rush Hour have dropped a sizeable hint that it'll be the first part of a retrospective telling the story of feted DJ Ron Hardy and the Chicago nightclub he presided over - 2013 can't come soon enough!

Review: Juno favourite Recloose provides one original track here, while surrendering a further two for remixing. "Chamois" is a feel-good slice of vintage-sounding looped disco-house. Andres' remix of "Electric Sunshine" is a killer, percussion-heavy house-funker with a cool, if slightly spooky, warped synth melody. Finally Oliverwho Factory take "Magic" and give it a techy old school house makeover which is, frankly, a blinder.

Review: With a title like this, it's no surprise to learn that the compilation Gerd Janson has pulled together for Rush Hour is somewhat indebted to the legacy of Kraftwerk. In a thoroughly refreshing focus of intent, the contributing artists have had to reach towards a preface of "ambient not ambient" to take part in this project, and the end results showcase artists reaching beyond the common fare they turn out in their day to day release schedules. With his roots in ambient, Move D is of course right at home here, as is Roman Flugel, but it's exciting to hear the Krautrock tones of Ame's "Erkki" or the claustrophobic beatdown of Maxxi & Zeus (better known as Quiet Village).

The Wiz Is A Genius
Review: Typically for Rush Hour, their recent Elbee Bad retrospective project uncovered more material than they could fit on one compilation, though this addendum 12" does come with a neat conceptual slant to it that merits separation. Entitled More True Stories Of House Music, the four tracks showcase Lamont Booker's work alongside vocalists and fellow producers, with lead track "Show Me" by House Of Fire dominated by Lisa Angel's classic house vocal delivery (Booker's slightly deranged keys also make themselves known too). More than anything, this quartet of productions nails Booker's production diversity as well as further demonstrating his mastery of that distinct early New York house sound. This is perhaps best demonstrated on "The Wiz & The Genius", a 1989 cut as part of The Wizard & The Genius alongside the wonderfully monikered Cutwizard Albee which sounds mind bendingly ahead of the curve.

If you're not familiar then these 12 tracks are essentially straight to tape recordings that touch on everything from warbling, lo-fi house to dusty techno manipulations via experimental minimal wave and ambient arrangements. Review: Whilst most people will have discovered the masterful productions of BNJMN via last year's still quite stunning sounding Plastic World album on Rush Hour's Direct Current label, the producer actually debuted on the Amsterdam label prior to that with a blink and you'll miss it Unknown white label. Dangerously prolific in the period since Plastic World, BNJMN marks his first material of 2012 with a second Unknown release for Rush Hour. This three track release finds BNJMN in precision driven rhythm form, with the opening production "Minus One" a sparse techno arrangement of rubbery basslines, gloopy drum sounds and frosty synths. This canny marriage of innate melodies with other worldly techno patterns continues on the flip with the gradual soar of "Shadow", whilst the multi textured "Unrest" wouldn't sound out of place on the Mathematics imprint.

Review: Rush Hour's Voyage Direct sub label might have just collared a certain Carl Craig to dust down a Tom Trago classic, but they've not lost sight of their steadfast approach of releasing material from a Dutch only pool of music talent. This new release sees the label reach out to Den Haag and welcome the sounds of William Kouam Djoko into the fold. This producer may be new to some, but Djoko is a fixture on the Dutch scene with several drops on 2000 and One's Thirtyonetwenty imprint. His Voyage Direct debut opens with the expansive sounds of "Enforce YS" which has ripples of analogue grooves bubbling in and around dramatic smudged keys and rough hewn drums. The flip has Djoko in much more energetic and playfully hypnotic mood, presenting two variants on "We Are Your Brothers & Sisters" - watch out for that swerve into spectral organs and clattering drum breaks son!

Tom Trago - "Lost In The Streets Of NYC" (Actress version)
Terrence Dixon - "Rush Hour" (Convextion unreleased version)
Review: Amsterdam hub Rush Hour switch their attentions back to their fledgling sub label Vault Series for a second release which features the timeless Actress remix of Tom Trago along with an unreleased Terrence Dixon remix from the elusive Texan techno producer Convextion. The self styled "cheeky series" launched in consummate fashion late last year with an unreleased track from the still mysterious Duster Valentine backed by the timely repressing of Aardvarck's classic and instantly recognisable party jam "(Just Washed) That Pig". That template is followed to a tee on the forthcoming installment, due out between late April and early May on vinyl and digital formats. The Actress version of Tom Trago's "Lost In The Streets Of NYC" was originally release back in mid 2009 on a Voyage Direct Remixes 12? alongside an equally good MCDE remix and has been out of print for some time - thus another chance to bask in this uptempo Detroit minded techno should not be passed up. The mental image of the Rush Hour staff rummaging around in a big shed out the back of their Spuistraat store for the material that forms this series is only strengthened by the B Side remix from Convextion. The Dallas based producer was commisioned to remix Terrence Dixon's seminal Population One production "Rush Hour" - the very track that inspired the company's name - alongside DJ Rolando and Aardvarck for a two part re-release to celebrate the label's tenth anniversary. Convextion actually submitted two remixes, the ambient version that featured on that 2007 release, and the intense, other worldly electro workout which has remained in the Rush Hour vaults until now. Highly recommended!

Review: Since debuting on the excellent WT imprint some three years ago, the Berlin based producer Hunee hasn't exactly been prolific, but you can't fault the pedigree of the labels he has graced or indeed the quality of his music. Rush Hour, Future Times, Permanent Vacation, Internasjonal and most recently Dekmantel have all benefitted from his masterful approach to crafting house music, and Hunee returns to Rush Hour with two productions that provide an auspicious look into how his forthcoming long player for the Amsterdam hub is shaping up. "Tide" ploughs a similar mind bending path to Hunee's recent contribution to Dekmantel's Anniversary series, with an infectious analogue synth line at the core and plenty of rough, layered drum sounds adding freeform energy. Equally the B Side tropical jam "Minnoch" is filled with trademark stylistic touches from Hunee with the stop start playful rhythms complemented expansive fuzzy bass tones and an enviable attention to sonic detail.

Review: Debuting on Rush Hour via their excellent Amsterdam All Stars compilation last year, Simon Weiss was the one relative unknown quantity amidst a cast of established, quality producers. "Amsterdam Wave" did however demonstrate Weiss to be worthy of such celebrated company, and Yesterday Is Around, his subsequent release for Hometaping Is Killing Music further established Weiss as a talented producer, effortlessly gliding towards the top of our list of favourite Hometaping releases. Weiss now steps up for a release on Rush Hour, with the Wave EP featuring a Rewaved version of his All Stars contribution along with three other dusty gems. And it's the simmering jack heavy emotion of "Return (The Wave)" that particularly impresses, slowly rising from the analogue mists into a chunky rhythm that shifts the chords around the stereo channels with rough vigour, slipping in twisted analogue spirals without any notice and generally feeling like Weiss was having fun in the studio during its inception.

Under the name, Lenon was responsible for Slamm Project, an EP of four Cajual funkers back in the early nineties before moving on to work on other musical projects. Typically, Rush Hour were working towards reissuing "Feel Free" from that aforementioned Cajual release when they stumbled across an unreleased Chico Slammer in the shape of "Galactic Alignment". Despite the fact the track's been lying in DAT tape dormancy for years, it still sounds totally fresh today - particularly the caked in bug powder dust A Side Sound Signal Mix that does the cosmic intentions of its title full justice.

Review: Kink, real name Strahil Velchev, has always been known to deliver a high dosage of disco-filtered funk in his records and this latest instalment on Holland's Rush Hour is no exception. The main mix of "Hand Made" dives head first into a fast-paced beat which points directly to peak time play. Once the bouncing groove has been given space to establish itself, Velchev introduces the soulful vocals of Rachel Row to play over the beat with frankly epic effect. The dub mix emphasises the disco-house vibes created on the main mix but injects sharper concoctions of high-hats and rimshots for more DJ-friendly uses. "Express" takes a darker approach to things and keeps on building until we're left with a nasty electro groove for the small hours.

Falty DL turns the Romanian's "See Other People" into a crazed futuristic techno R&B hybrid - probably what a Kyle Hall remix of Kingdom would sound like. Rescued from dusty shoeboxes full of DAT tapes, the 16 tracks showcased here could be considered long-lost house classics. Certainly, the mix of early deep house, slinky vocal numbers, next-level acid experimentation and raw, midtempo dreamscapes is the equal of anything that emerged from the Windy City in that productive period from 1986-1990. If you're a confirmed househead, you need this in your life.

Detroit State Of Mind (Space Dimension Controller remix)
Review: Kyle Hall aside, it's hard to pick two up-and-coming producers better suited to the task of giving Anthony Shake Shakir's off kilter Detroitisms a contemporary tweak than FaltyDL and Space Dimension Controller. In the first of two Rush Hour-curated releases, Belfast youngster SDC, fresh off a stunning EP released on resurgent Belgian imprint R&S, turns his intergalactic remixing hand on the seminal "Detroit State Of Mind", first released in 1998. He slows down the tempo here, opting for slo-mo, bubbling synths, claps and a vintage analogue electro-disco funk melodies that are fast becoming the SDC signature sound. FaltyDL (real name Drew Lustman) meanwhile remixes "Assimilated" over on the flip. Despite being based in New York, Falty's sound has its roots in the UK, with his releases displaying a clear affection for dubstep, funky and old-school garage as well as house. On this effort he goes for a dense, layered approach, with snare hits busily chopping and changing direction amid a flurry of analogue squiggles, with a bassline groove that is slowed down, tweaked and generally messed with in an insouciant manner that would no doubt make Shakir smile. More than merely a nice idea for a remix project, this release serves as a neat snapshot of what electronic music is all about in 2010: a fertile breeding ground between genres, eras and continents, with one foot respectfully planted in the past and the other holding the door open for the future.

Here he takes time out from finalising "Iris" his forthcoming album and the epic Alfabet project (a collaboration with Awanto3, one half of Rednose Distrikt) to lay down a promo-only single. "Shutters" is in many ways typical Trago fare. It boasts that huggingly soft, atmospheric production for which he's renowned, clever use of instrumental soul samples (particularly after the second breakdown) and a nagging, relentless live bassline. It's heavy pace and thumping groove combine with his wall of sound production to great effect, too. The impeccable Extended Version is joined by an Extended Dub, which strips some of the soul samples to give a simpler, late night feel.

Review: Joining the ranks of Anthony Shake Shakir, Rick Wade and Daniel Wang's Balihu imprint in being honoured with a Rush Hour retrospective is Detroit native and current New Zealand resident Recloose. As the title would suggest, this rounds up early Recloose material after Matt Chicoine was introduced to the electronic music cognoscenti via Carl Craig's Planet E imprint with some unreleased heat interspersed. Any apprehension over the tracks on this rather lovely packaged CD sounding dated is blown away with the bombastic opening track "Get There Tonight" which featured on the 1999 Spelunking EP for Carl Craig's revered imprint. What really impresses is Chicoine's obvious talent for merging house and techno with strands of preceding musical forms; be it jazz ("First Off") or dub ("Absence Of One"). The real highlight here is amidst the unreleased material with "Antares", a flip towards loose filtered house that's made special by the introduction of a delightfully soulful vocal harmony sampled and cut to fit the gaps.

"Solar Flight" will be familiar to fans of Will Smith's early musical career as it was used as the backing for a heavy dose of scratchadelia by Jazzy Jeff on their "Rhythm Trax" song as well as being sampled by a wealth of other producers.
