Review: The reissue of Surgeon's classic 1999 album Force & Form brings back the unique sound of the Birmingham techno maestro. With every track from Electric Chicken, Movement, to Prowler hearing a thorough remastering job from the one and only Matt Colton, this album is renowned as one of the true inception points of the Birmingham sound: cold metallics, industrial noise, intense rhythms and unrelenting energy. Considered a turning point in the artist's wilfully scalpel-precise career, Force & Form established Surgeon as a true master of techno.

Review: DJ Sofa returns to the Myor Massiv label with more of her dancefloor heaters. The A-side is all about bring big time party energy to the club with raga samples, gun finger bait, hooky melodies and of course some firing jungle breakbeats underpinned by drilling basslines. The flipside jam 'Over & Over' has plenty more fire in store with its old school signifiers, hardcore pitched up vocals and rave melodies over plunging bass stabs and well designed breaks. This is another essential 12" destined for big things.

Review: It's not always easy to keep up with the output of the relentlessly prolific Flaty, a core tenet of Moscow's Gost Zvuk as well as pursuing his own endeavours. From hard-edged experimentalism and dub-scuffed glitch to oddball ambient and wayward techno, he's a truly original spirit, and his new album continues that trend with yet another dimension to his sound. Intuitive Word is imbued with a strong pop and RnB slant which bleeds into the sample sources and the strong sense of melody, but still this remains a leftfield, compelling release for those with an experimental appetite. Quite how Flaty has squared off these contrasting forces is hard to express, but take a listen to 'Intension' with its tripped out beat and synth arrays shot through with vocal licks and you begin to get the picture. It's dope as hell and oh so sweet on top, like nothing else out there right now.

Review: Last year, Brian Eno served up his latest critically acclaimed album in the form of FOREVERANDEVERNOMORE. Now he follows it up with the much anticipated instrumental version. Despite his advancing years and the sheer scope of what he has already accomplish dint he ambient world - not least devising the genre in the first place - Eno still manages to excite and intrigue here. The artwork alone is beautiful, and the music inside is similarly lush - widescreen cosmic soundscapes with subtle melodies and shifting timbres, pregnant empty space and a knack for sounds designs with meaning few others can match.

Six of these tunes are brand new edits of Madonna's top commercial and promotional remixes from the 'American Life' era that have never been released before. The two others are a superb Ralphi Rosario House Vocal Mix of 'Love Profusion' and Deepsky's Home Sweet Home Vocal Edit of 'Hollywood.'

Review: Aiden Francis brings a superb mix of influences to this EP, from trance to breaks, house to tech house and it makes for a third fine offering from this young but promising Ellipse label. 'Atacama' opens up with blistering pace and molten synths tightly woven over the propulsive drums. 'Twilight' is another track seeped in lush melodies and with a throwback techno sounds that is full of subtle dancefloor electronics. 'Awareness' (Sunset mix) is one to get the hands in the air as the trancey chords and acid rain down. Energy levels don't dip on the flip either on this most powerful and consuming of space-techno trips.

It has excelled at mining a rich vein of electronic sounds where space music, techno, electro and minimal all combine into fresh new forms. Wickham is next up with some colourful and creative party sounds on this 11th label EP. Review: While all of NuNorthern Soul's releases are delightfully warming, sun-baked and mood-enhancing, the label's latest release - a new EP from imprint stalwart and long-serving American producer Marshall Watson - is especially impressive. Musically, it's sun-bright and sonically enveloping, offering a calming and colourful bath for the head, heart and soul. Interestingly, there's a touch more dancefloor focus than you may expect - see the Balearic-acid shuffle of 'Open Sky', the grandiose, enveloping chords and bustling breakbeats of 'The Landscape' and the tactile Balearic nu-disco of 'Sweet Sounds' - but wholeheartedly horizontal moments are never far away. In this category you'll find delightful opener 'High Desert' and Seahawks' accompanying remix of the same track, which is as magical as you'd expect it to be.

Exotic Moog was initially released in 1969 and pretty much does what it says on the tin - takes the iconic Moog synth and conjures up all manner of exotic and spaced-out sounds that leave you laying back and gazing on in awe. There's a retro-future feel to them which makes them all the more likable, and though some are beatless pieces of suspensory scene-setting, there are some breezy grooves like 'I Talk To The Trees' and sentimental space waltzes like 'The Enchanted Sea'. A characterful world of cinematic sounds for sure.

Review: Correcciones Calypso returns from a generous hiatus with the fourth edition of its acclaimed edit series, replete with four re-edits that veer from the subtle to the downright brazen. Thomass Jackson and INigo Vontier invite the French duo Youkounkoun to open proceedings with an insane early 80s edit full of big drums and exotic touches that's been blowing dancefloors all around the world for the past years - and definitely resides in the brazen category, despite a lot of work having gone into it. Olta Karawame make their debut on the series with a powerful, compact edit full of ballsy keyboard riffing and a military-sized kick drum that is guaranteed to have heads banging . To complete the release label bosses Thomass and INigo deliver edits of their own with their characteristic sound, giving this EP maximum a value for money factor and entertainment from start to finish.

Zimbabwe-born and later London-based Mataya "Clifford" Chewaluza was a core part of the vibrant West London music scene, using his songwriting, production and multi-instrumentalist skills on albums for RCA and Virgin. He also dropped a few 12"s and this one was released in 1988. It's a cult curio with crashing 80s production, disco-tinged grooves and plenty of subtle African rhythm which includes a standout dub mix from Jura Soundsystem.

He is now set to start 2023 in an equally strong fashion with four more futuristic bass fusions. 'Wire' is a minimal stepper with bursts of bass and flitting percussive lines. This blistering electro EP features three originals that mix up industrial textures with caustic drums and star-gazing synth work. 'Vivre' is an eye-watering opener with sheet metal sounds and frosty pads, 'Kraft' is then a slower more pensive electro soundscape and 'Vertabre' has a truly brutal groove that will rattle the walls of any club space, as well as dislodge brain cells. Sync 24 rounds things out with a remix of the same cut that becomes a sonic blizzard.

'Shout' is all about its monster rhythmic framework, with economic splashes of synths on the side simply maintaining the flavour and a properly full on old skool breakdown. Flip track 'Remember' leans a little further towards UK garage with its sugar sweet female vocal snippets, but the central groove hustles and bustles along with maximum weightiness, making it suitable for any number of differing dancefloors.

Originally debuting in dub form (featured for your convenience over on the flip) during his appearance on The Music Locker as part of Grand Theft Auto Online, it is an absolutely emotive number reaching near spiritual moments and complemented by Phiris' wonderful vocal. Mister Wong (Disco dub - Jura Soundsystem extended edit)
Review: In 1972, French producer turned ZE Records founder Michel Esteban released a one-off single as Bella Vista, "Mister Wong". Like many of the records the New York-based entrepreneur worked on, the track gleefully joins the dots between spacey synth-pop, NYC style mutant disco and what these days we'd call sun-kissed Balearic disco. The slow motion, glassy-eyed original version comes accompanied by the original flipside "Disco Dub" - a much sparser affair focused on the killer slap bass, reverb-laden percussion and slivers of guitar and synth - and a brand new "Extended Disco Dub Edit" by Isle of Jura chief Kevin Griffiths as Jura Soundsystem. This extends the oh-too-short Disco Dub for greater dancefloor pleasure while adding some fantastic new percussion.

Review: On-point Japanese producer Takuya Matsumoto returns to Clone's Jack For Daze label with a follow-up to his brilliantly executed 85-88 EP. He's not discovered a shoe-box of DATs under the bed, but rather is purposefully paying tribute to the early days of house and techno with specific explorations of particular eras and their attendant sounds. This time around we're taken to the early 90s, with some wonderful, varied results. There's lush, FM-embellished deep house on '01 90' and edgy, jackin' techno wormholes opening up on '02 91'. Meanwhile '03 92' retains a healthy bounce and some lush washes of synth, and '04 93' tips towards the kind of garage house you'd find on a Strictly Rhythm record 30 years ago. Crucially, it's all shot through with tonnes more personality than most 90s soundalike records, so full credit to Matsumoto for spelling his intentions out and delivering the goods.

Review: Simultaneously reaching back into the roots of Samba whilst reconfiguring the sound for a new context, Dominco Lancelloti's Sramba is an ingenious contribution to the world of Brazilian jazz. Recorded over two months in Lancelloti's home studio in Lisbon, and inspired by a couple of Russian-designed synths that came into the artist's possession, this is a project that was born out of experimentation. The opening track, 'Ere', features hypnotic guitar riffs and skittering drum sequences that gradually build into an infectious groove over the course of the track. On the B-side, 'Nada Sera De Outra Maneira' takes a softer turn with glittering hints of piano and a central narrative driven by velvety vocals. This is an exciting new take on Samba that opens up a new world of creative possibilities.

That's where they return to for this short and sweet 7", digging into their track 'Woop Baby' for an extended mix trip on the A-side. It's a choppy, funkified joint with low-slung bass and diced up soul vocals which will get any downtempo situation locked in hard. Review: Psychedelic dance technicians explore the recesses of weird emotion with their latest release with Latrec. The original 'Kutika' is like a pocket calculator gone rogue, blending an electrified MPC-style jam on the beat with dubbed-out vocal samples and an oddly resonant bass synth. Paranoid London member Quinn Whalley crops up on the B-side, together with Matt Cowell under the name The WC, for a remix - the toilet humour is apt, since this version of the track does sort of sound like it's sloshing around in a washbasin, with its verbed-out delays on the bass. Remotif, meanwhile, throws a driving trance curveball on the B2.

The Johannesburg-born, Doncaster-raised artist Doya Beardmore really comes of age here, finding his own unique voice and putting it front and centre. Its gravelly baritone is unique and delivers what the artist says he would have done first time around on his debut had he been brave enough. Observations made at design exhibitions are the jumping-off point for the songs which are both visceral yet soulful as they muse on life, death, family, religion and major milestones in between.

Moving away from their debut album, the duo fuses digital artifacts, scanner sounds, and vocoder voices with melodic colors that radiate across cold electro landscapes. The opening track, 'Reform,' takes a deep dive into the electro sound, while 'Plexistorm' blends synthesised strings with arpeggiated acidic bleeps. The French producer drops it here as his debut for his local pushers House Puff, which is a fitting name, as they must be puffing out their chests at this one. Ultimate slappage is achieved through 'Slice's careful, precision command over snappy transients and rapid-fire syncope, with the track 'Nano' in particular doubling down on the fact that Twoslice is skilled, and knows it.

Review: Although hard-to-find, Harold McNair's 1968 cut 'The Hipster' has long been an anthem on the British jazz-dance scene, with numerous contemporary musicians (Chip Wickham included) referencing it in their work. Here reissued officially by Soul Brother, the track features the Jamaican-born flautist and saxophonist delivering energetic, life-affirming flute solos over an infectious, piano-sporting jazz groove. As the original RCA 45 did, this pressing also features fellow 'Flute and Nut' album track 'Indecision' - a more laidback affair built around brushed snares, languid jazz breaks and rubbery double bass - on side B.

Take Your Time (feat Wayne Snow - Jenifa Mayanja remix) (7:48)
Review: Eccentric drummer and project leader Ziggy Zeitgeist helms the Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange, an ultra-versatile jazz band hailing from Berlin - he's also an integral part of the band 30/70. While major jazz freakouts of the improvisatory kind are ZZFX's usual penchant, especially on their albums, the new 'Kreuzberg Kix' EP series is far more focused on laying down danceable house and broken beaty cuts to wax. This one's got three tracks of deep and atmospheric house, with the B-siders moving off into the world of collaboration, with vocalist Wayne Snow appearing on the B for a soul-inflected groover, plus a remix from fresh New York talent Jenifa Mayanja. A more functional curveball for ZZFX, proving they're not limited to just sonic spectacle, and occasionally like to bask in mood-setting too.

Review: Club scene doyen, dance music veteran, and rave culture hero Johannes Auvinen opts to depart from the dance floor, at least for the time being, and deliver Arles - an ode to the other side of the electronic-acid scene, those sounds that make most sense after the chaos and carnage of a party have subsided and you're safely home on the couch with you and yours and all dearest.
And it works as well as it should, with the experience both of living in that world and making anthems for it clearly evident in the overall production quality and ideas. Arles is a warm blanket, that friendly therapist, an album that understands where you've been because it was there too. Remarkably, despite what that may suggest, this is not ambient or particularly leftfield stuff. Instead, it's rhythmic, pop-infused electronica goodness, for want of a more succinct, less awkward turn of phrase.

Ha-Ya (Eternal Life) (5:02)
Review: The one and only Mr K sure does know how to cook up a masterful edit. Here he heads into gospel territory with the latest 7" in Most Excellent Unlimited's collaborations with him. Both of these tunes are appearing on 7" vinyl for the first time here and have long been staples of the sets of Danny Krivit. His 'Churchapella' edit of Madonna's 'Like A Prayer' is as holy and steamy as it gets with the whole thing sure to uplift and energise any crowd. On the backside is a superb edit of the Clark Sisters slinky rare groove gem 'Ha-Ya (Eternal Life).' It's a slightly slower tune but one that makes just as much of an impact.

Review: Dubtil finally launches his own label here and it's called Infrequent, which we hope won't be a case of nominative determinism. It's something minimal and tech house fans have long been wanting and this first drop doesn't disappoint. One of Romania's most accomplished DJs and producers lays out a fine vision here with the spaced out tech funk of 'I' kicking off with its dreamy pads and clipped beats. 'II' is even more out of this world with its wiry synths and aline life forms over heftier drums, then 'III' closes out with brilliant drum programming, pinging bass and the sort of smeared pads that bring real death.

It is a widescreen and cinematic long player that will not leave fans wanting as big names like Chris Brown, Travis Scott, The Wknd, 21 Savage, John Legend and Don Tolliver feature. The 15 tunes flow well despite the many different names on it and intricate yet accessible beats define much of the rhythms. Review: House-master, Matthias, is the latest producer to debut on the iconic Scottish Minimal/Tech house imprint, Craigie Knowes. Delivering a class EP injected with originality and outright funk, this will be a no-brainer purchase for a long list of DJs and home listeners. On the A side, 'Tube Star' arrives with a throbbing bassline, honey-sweet synths and glinting percussion. For the A2, growling electric guitar melodies meet darkened synthlines and bludgeoning kicks to produce a powerful dancefloor-ready track. On the B-side, we have Ultra Bass on remix duties, offering a bass-stroke-acid-stroke-garage take on Matthais' signature sound - this is undoubtedly a peak time track for those out-of-control moments. Closing things up, 'Wires Around My Neck' slows to a patient pace - a duet of circling synth melodies and chugging drums give this track a delectably wonky, spaced-out vibe. A wonderfully varied release that is surely set to be a favourite for this year's circuit of festivals.

Review: Yuku come correct with this special blue vinyl remix 12". Two vibes per side, both Traka and Granul go under the knife. On one side we have Serbian crew Traka under scrutiny as Commodo flips 'Yosai' into a menacing slab of tension while Muqata takes the Killa P-fronted 'Start Taking Note' into a brutalist sonic rainbow. Review: Uwe Zahn might have been active under his real name more recently, but his longtime Arovane project has always remained steady apace. That being said, there's also a great impetus to reissue his music going at the minute: Lilies is the ambient musician's fourth album, and was originally released in 2004 by City Centre Offices, a label run between Berlin and Manchester. Inspired by a trip to Japan, there is an unmistakable eco-ambient undercurrent to this album. Out of print for almost two decades, Kepler do the good work of reissuing it now: Lilies is exquisite, with its laboured rhythmatics and lush synthetic plucks providing a blueprint for generations of Western ambient (techno) artists to come.

Review: German IDM and experimental electronic don Arovane, AKA Uwe Zahn, is a name well worth taking a deep dive into if you've not already. Rising to specialist prominence in the late-1980s as a result of him playing no small part in pushing the evolution of instrumental art-hip hop forward, by the mid-1990s he was recognised among the most innovative names in synthesised leftfield, occupying a place that's as commanding as it is peaceful, a futuristic sonic world that pulls us in closer with every drum and refrain.
Icol Distil is one of his earliest releases, but certainly makes it clear that by the time he got round to putting stuff out under the Arovane guise he was already incredibly accomplished. Ear worm broken beat beauty after ear worm broken beat beauty reside on the track list, so prepare to be fully immersed.

Review: Dutchman Tom Trago has somehow been away from what was once his home label for a full decade now. He makes a welcome return like a long-lost son on new album Deco, a superbly accomplished record that takes its name from a sauna he frequented when he needed to decompress. Eventually, he put his musical career on hold and went to speed time with his young family and so this album was recorded after a long time away from club dance floors. It is delightfully whimsical with airy melodies, curious chords and majestic synth craft all drifting over barely-there rhythms. It's an album that provided musical therapy for Trago, and now us.

It's a rich array of hip-hop and r&b styles with its scores of hit singles securing it staple status across the Western world. The album's playful fusions of funk and new jack swing - as well as of course some extremely on-point style and corsage from members Terry Ellis, Dawn Robinson, Cindy Herron, and Maxine Jones - rendered this a girl group great. Review: More 'different strokes for house folks' as the Faith crew returns to wax, this time with a swathe of new revisions of classic cuts. On the A-side you get two fresh takes on 90s anthems by Farley and Heller's Roach Motel project: a joyously bouncy, peak-time ready dance through the pair's 1993 gem 'Movin On' courtesy of Darius Syrossian, and a chunky, restless and subtly pitched-down Harry Romero rework of the pair's infamous mid-90s tribute to DJ Pierre, 'Wild Luv' (wild pitch, I think I love you). Over on the B it's all about Cevin Fisher's turn-of-the-millennium workout 'Love You Some More'. Harry Romero channels the spirit of Twilo on a dense, big-room ready early morning tweak, before Fisher himself delivers a low-slung take propelled forwards by a massive bassline. Sweat-soaked goodness all told!

Fittingly, volume one begins with the track that opened the label's debut release - the classic US deep house style bounce of Dam Swindle's 'The Breakup' - before we're offered the chance to savour the organ-rich, hands-in-the-air positivity of Scan 7's brilliant 'The Best Is Yet To Come'. Smith was introduced to local musicians and bands as a result and was soon playing the local circuit. He landed a record label 18 months later and his first single came in 1973. Success followed as did an album that never actually got roasted. It was then in 1983 that he laid down the slow-burning mid-tempo soul numbers which feature in this 7" for the first time.
