Claremont Editions (limited hand-numbered gatefold 2xLP)
Cat: C 56LP 015. Rel: 19 Feb 20
Balearic/Downtempo
  1. Abbey Spells - "Those Shoes" (6:48)
  2. HF International - "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)" (feat Kashif - KI's extended Disco dub) (6:09)
  3. Fursattl - "Leerlauf" (11:08)
  4. Hear & Now - "Alba Sol" (8:39)
  5. Yamp Kolt - "Fuyu No Ne" (feat Karin Miyagi) (4:12)
  6. Statues - "Heaven Fades" (8:59)
  7. Holger Czukay & U-She - "Longing" (4:27)
Review: In the early years of the label, Claremont 56 delivered a slew of crate digging compilations. Now boss man Paul 'Mudd' Murphy has decided to flip the script by launching a brand new series dedicated to new and unheard music from the label's vaults. There's plenty to get excited about on volume one, with the set offering a mixture of fine dancefloor workouts (the killer disco dub of HF International's superb cover of Hall & Oates "I Can't Go For That" and the krautrock thrust of Fursatt's "Leerlauf") and more languid downtempo jams (see the Balearic bliss offered up by Statues, Hear & Now and Abby Spells). There's also a previously unheard collaboration between the late, great husband-and-wide team Holgar Czukay and U-She that's worth the admission price on its own.

Review: It's not hard to see why Reggie Andrews & The Fellowship's "Mystic Beauty" is a holy grail record for jazz lovers that has long been unavailable and often fetches four digit prices on second hand markets. A earthy, stunning set of modal soul jazz from the LA underground of the 60s brimming with glowing piano chords and mellifluous keys drifting next to lilting trumpets and gently swaying drums, with the overtness of Afro-Cuban rhythms and Latin sunshine. Whether it's spiritual-jazz, soul-jazz, jazz-funk, none quite capture the musical beauty of this most profound and life-enriching album, which is so masterfully led by pianist Reggie Andrews.

Review: Released right at the very end of 2019, Stormzy's much-trumpeted second album, "Heavy Is The Head", is one of the most significant releases in recent times. Made with a gigantic cast list of producers and guest vocalists - Aitch, Burna Boy, Headie One, H.E.R, Tiana Major9, Yebba, Fred Gibson and MJ Cole included - the set includes some of his most thoughtful and incisive lyrics to date, as well as some particularly ear-catching mutations of grime that will further solidify his place as one of Britain's most important artists of the 21st century. Yes, it does include more nods towards pop music - he's a Glastonbury headliner after all - but the beats remain tough.

  1. Crowns Of Glory - "Lord, Look At Your People" (Joaquin Joe Claussell mix) (5:48)
  2. Keith Barrow - "A World Of Lonely People" (Joaquin Joe Claussell mix) (7:37)
Review: If the rich history of US gospel soul, funk and disco gets your juices flowing, you need this new 12" from Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell in your life. As with many of the storied producer's edit-focused 12" singles, it has been pressed in limited quantities and should therefore be grabbed before all the copies disappear. On the A-side he offers up a tidy, dancefloor-focused tweak of Crowns of Glory's hard-to-find 1976 gospel soul cut "Lord, Look At Your People", brilliantly teasing out the intro before unleashing the song in all its inspiring righteousness. Over on the flip Clausell turns his attention to the Clavinet-heavy, Blaxploitation-era gospel disco anthem that is Keith Barrow's equally as inspired 1977 gem "A World Of Lonely People".

Review: Formerly known as The Greatest Hoax, there's nothing remotely fake about Washington D.C.'s T.R. Jordan. The work of some serious talent, both in terms of its arrangements and those working behind the scenes (Rafael Anton Irissari, of legendary Ann Arbour imprint Ghostly International is on mixing and production duties), the results of efforts to create this album are truly gripping, albeit in a gentle and heartbreakingly tender way. Whoever the "You" in the title is needs to count themselves very lucky indeed. The six tracks presented here are spellbinding contemporary classical overtures of such spectacular beauty they seem destined to score the most humanistic moments of sci fi. From the redemptive mood of "Leap Of Faith", to the fairytale piano stunner that is "Bruised World", here's proof that storytelling needs no words.

Review: Scuzzy, sludgy, creeping, muscular and delicate-enough to feel there could be a break in its bones at any moment. King Krule returns with a third album that once again tears skin open to reveal the heartfelt emotions within its lo-fi, muttered, pseudo-rock tones. Referencing Sleaford Mods on heavy opiates wouldn't be too far from the mark at times, although we're not here to simply use touchstones - Archy Marshall deserves better than that. Despite almost everything on "Man Alive!" being so quiet, it packs an incredible level of noise. Subtle licks, strange details and a deceptive depth would be one way to describe the whole package. Grunge tones ("Supermarche"), lo-fi blues pop (""Don't Let The Dragon) Draag On") are just some of the nuances it's possible to pick upon, making for a wholly original work that captivates, relaxes and uneases in equal measure.

Review: You can't help but be impressed by the trajectory evident in Agnes Obel's work since she first stopped us dead in tracks on 2010's debut, "Philharmonics". Instrumentally, she's still a maestro capable of grabbing you by the tear ducts with stunning, graceful melodies. But lyrically, she might be on course to becoming one of the most expressive we've got. And that's something to treasure. "Myopia" doesn't feel celebratory, mind. In fact anything but. It's an atmospherically dark, nocturnal journey into equally dark themes, told with nighttime language. From asking corpses what the other side is like, ahead of their physical bodies being lowered into the lightless ground ("Island Of Doom"), to the pain and frustrations of insomnia (the appropriately-named "Broken Sleep"), it's not an album that will ready you for the arrival of spring, but it's easy to find yourself falling for its understated melancholia.

Review: While most records invite you to listen, this retrospective celebration of Brazilian songwriter, composer and multi-instrumentalist Priscilla Ermel feels more like something that's inviting you into its own universe. A strange, exotic place to most western ears, if World Music wasn't such a generic and painfully sweeping term we'd apply it here. Sounds of the Amazon, sounds of the other, sounds of traditional emigre folk and a load of stuff that defies accurate description, this collection is impossible not to fall in love with. Having spent time learning the sonic ways of indigenous tribes in her homeland, then taking those instruments (among others) and re-appropriating them via field records and electronic synthesisers, she manages to create things of sombre beauty ("Meditacao"), work of percussive seduction ("Americua") and tracks packing mysterious, fantastical, futurist experimentation ("Mensageiro").

Review: With a title that translates as "soul creole", it's perhaps unsurprising to find that David Walters' new album is a warm, woozy and tropical-tinged delight. It was produced by Favorite Recordings in house producer Bruno "Patchworks" Hovart, and you can hear his hand in the warm, authentic and vintage blend of African, South American, Caribbean rhythms and instrumentation. Walters says he was inspired by the melting pot that was New York at the turn of the 80s, too, and that's evident throughout. Add it all up and you have an eclectric, retro-futurist treat held together by the dual appeal of Hovart's production and Walters' fantastic multi-lingual vocals.

Review: Second time around for David "Move D" Moufang and Benjamin Brunn's first full-length collaboration, a set of unsurprisingly deep, minimalistic house, techno and ambient workouts that first appeared in record stores way back in 2006. It's one of those albums that's arguably best listened to while flat on your back in an intoxicated state, despite the presence of such hypnotic, early morning club workouts as "On The Magic Bus" and the dreamy and delightful "O". You see, the majority of the album's eight tracks are spaced-out in the extreme and all the more alluring for it, as Moufang and Brunn expertly showcase their ability to create impeccable slices of hushed, otherworldly electronic minimalism.

Review: Back in 1984, American pianist Nate Morgan delivered his second album for Nimbus West Records, "Retribution, Reparation", a superb set of politically-charged hard modal jazz tracks shot through with Afro-futurism and a clear air of spirituality. Ever since it's become something of a collector's item, hence this facsimile reissue from Outernational Sounds. It boasts four of his own wild, hard-wired compositions - each of which contains nods towards free-jazz and some killer saxophone work by fellow Nimbus Collective member Jesse Sharps - plus inspired covers of Herbie Hancock's "One Finger Snaps" and Duke Ellington's "Come Sunday".

Review: In 1980, avant-garde musician Ellen Fullman decided to build her own unusual, grand-scale instrument out of 70-foot long wires and a metal pole. Played by the performer moving their rosin-covered hands over the wires, "the long string instrument" (as she imaginatively called it) became the sole sound source of a trio of tape-only albums Fullman recorded in the 1980s. This double vinyl set includes recordings from two of those, "In The Sea" and "Work For Four Players & 90 Strings". The pieces are long, seductive, minimalist and meditative, offering shifting, droning tones similar in style to some Indian instruments. It's remarkable stuff all told and well worth further investigation.

Review: A warm welcome back to TRAMP's flagship compilation series "Movements", a long-running institution that brings together rare finds from the German label's crate-digging chiefs. As with its predecessors, this tenth volume is an eclectic affair that's presented in chronological order (IE oldest tracks first, newest last). There are far too many highlights to mention, though our current favourites include the swinging soul-jazz of Phylis Hendricks' "My Man", the fiery, Mod-style rhythm and blues of "Coming Home Baby" by Ronny Pellers Satin Sound, the dancefloor-focused Latin soul brilliance of The Lido's "Evil Ways" and the superb soul-funk obscurity that is the Headliners "Little Sister (Part 1 & 2)".

In the case of the latest LP from Australians Dreems and Kris Baha, it's more a case of record defining term rather than the other way round. Produced with their vast and culturally fascinating homeland very much at the forefront of their minds, it's hard not to feel captivated by the air of surrealism and compelled by the grooves on offer. Opener "Wires In The Outback" sets the scene well. Waves of weird synth work gradually immerse the listener before huge drums rolls begin crashing in. From there it's adventure abound, calling off at the head-nodding alt-pop of "The Island (Back To Me)" and the slo-mo chug of "Desert Metallika", seemingly without pausing for breath. Psychedelic, shimmering harmonies deliver a trippy conclusion, here entitled "Fur Alle", a modus that's also employed, albeit with darker undertones, on "Cape Grim", while "Deep Chrome Red" brings things closer to deep, weird club beats.

Review: Since 2017, Steve "BCee" Jeffery and Andrew "Villem" Wilson have been operating as The Vanguard Project, in the process delivering a swathe of EPs for Spearhead and Fokuz that explore the more soulful, sun-drenched end of the drum & bass spectrum. This long-awaited debut album expands a little on their core sound - think nods to dub and reggae, occasional gnarly basslines and even a rush-inducing rave workout or two - whilst remaining rooted in what would have once been called liquid drum & bass. As a result, it's a set that manages to cram in a lot of high-class dancefloor moments while working well as an album you'll repeatedly want to listen to from start to finish.

Review: If you've ever seen the "South Park" episode, "Two Days Before The Day After Tomorrow", spare a thought for Lanterns On The Lake. The outfit have been in hiatus over the last four years, returning to studio and release schedule in a world increasingly hellbent on a worrying course. Their earlier work offered warnings of impending fallout from towns that time forgot, among other omens. Those chickens have come home to roost in reality, and the vocal cries of Hazel Wilde don't ignore this. Opening number "When It All Comes True" is proof enough of this. Nevertheless, this latest expands the horizon, still dealing with big problems only different ones. Isolation, dependency and - looming largest of all - a world set ablaze by its own people. All wrapped up in shimmering, soaring, cinematic instrumentation - here more intimately realised than ever - the picture painted is a lovely sort of doom.

Review: Superior Viaduct have done the world a service by putting together a retrospective of key works by Jon Gibson, a virtuoso reeds player who became an acclaimed minimalist composer in his own right after working with scene pioneers Terry Riley and Steve Reich. Much of the material on "Songs & Melodies 1973-77" is reminiscent of those composers' work in that period - think hypnotic woodwind, piano and string cycles that subtly evolve - and is every bit as alluring. Impressively the cast list of musicians features some of New York's finest avant-garde artists of the period - Arthur Russell included - while some of the vintage recordings are appearing in public for the very first time.

Review: Since first pitching up on Erased Tapes back in 2013, singer-songwriter Douglas Dare has delivered a handful of sublime releases that blur the boundaries between neo-classical, folk, contemplative electronica and alternative rock. "Milkteeth", his third album and first for almost four years, is undeniably his most sparse and stripped-back, with many of the thoughtful, heart-aching songs utilizing only a pared-down range of instruments (piano, acoustic guitar, sampled loops and solo brass and woodwind parts being the most notable). The results are genuinely spellbinding, with Dare's layered voice and contemplative lyrics taking centre stage throughout.

Review: There's something rather terrifying about "De Angst Voorbij", even if the album title is compelling you to move "Beyond The Fear". The brainchild of Flemish cult star Gerry Vergult, its drone-fuelled broodiness contrasts poppier nuances (perhaps most eerily on "Russische Roulette", nodding to some of horror's most tried and tested methods of disturbing us. "Monster" incorporates organ chords that could be the cries of a haunted fairground. "Faits Divers" uses a simple two-tone melody to slowly build an imposing atmosphere, dropping delightful piano keys over the top to bring about a sense of parallels that correlate and compliment. As a record, it's an intriguing beast that is unapologetically challenging, truly unforgettable, and deserves a place in any far-reaching and forward-thinking music collection. Those looking for real proof should check the dark wave-y hypnosis of "Usurpation".

Review: Given that he's spent much of the last decade producing other artists, recording collaborative sets and performing live, you could say that Robert Glasper's latest solo set - his first, by our calculation, since 2009 - is long overdue. Of course, while it may be his name on the cover, it's still a collaborative affair, with the assembled cast list including a wealth of musicians, rappers and singers from the worlds of jazz and hip-hop, including (deep breath) Bilal, Herbie Hancock, Yasiin Bley, Buddy and Terrace Martin. To fit everyone and everything in (one thing Glasper is not short of is great ideas), the GRAMMY-winning pianist has presented it as a non-stop mixtape. It's a format that allows his widescreen, eclectic vision to come to life.
