Review: Follow Your Bliss serves as a greatest hits compilation from New Jersey emo/post-hardcore legends Sense Fail, originally released in 2012, and featuring choice cuts and singles from all of their albums up to that point. Whilst covering their first four full-lengths - Let It Unfold You (2004), Still Searching (2006), Life Is Not A Waiting Room (2008) and The Fire (2010), as well as their debut EP From the Depths of Dreams; the collection also boasts the four additional (at the time) new tracks which were included to help initially boost sales, with 'Early Graves' and single 'War Paint' growing into fan favourites in the years since.

Review: Over two decades since its initial release, the third full-length from emo veterans, Saves The Day, is still heralded as a high watermark for the pop-punk/post-hardcore scene of the 21st century. Switching out acclaimed producer, Steve Evetts, who manned the desks of their first two albums, Elliot Smith collaborator Rob Schnapf was enlisted to help the band channel their dynamic influences and conflicting emotions into an exceptional work of alternative, melancholic beauty. 'Stay What You Are', is often regarded as one of the focal points of the emo movement arriving on more accessible shores, and you'd be hard-pressed to find any self-respecting list of genre essentials that omits the project. Influencing a myriad of today's most prevalent and dynamic acts, this scene staple belongs on the shelf of any self-proclaimed, unashamed lover of emo.

Review: The 2022 horror film 'M3gan' deals with the uncanny terror of having a sort of AI-driven robot gain malevolent sentience in the comfort of a suburban home. British composer Anthony Willis, known for his work on past greats like 'How To Train Your Dragon', proves himself adept at sonically reflecting this pre-singularity dread. Much like its theme of a shadowy toy company programmer's invention of a murderous lifelike doll, the soundtrack is looming and conspiratorial, and deservingly comes to OST specialists Waxwork on the LP version here.

Review: The original score for the horror film of the same name - your latest in the enduring "cabin in the woods" subgenre - Knock At The Cabin sonically accompanies the story of a young girl and her parents are taken hostage by four armed strangers who demand they make an unthinkable choice to avert the apocalypse. 18 suspense-laden originals composed by the Icelandic musician Herdis Stefansdottir appear, building off of the composer's prior work on indie films such as The Sun Is Also a Star, The Hate U Give, Runaways and Evil Eye. Coming to gatefold 180 gram black & red split coloured vinyl LP, with an insert.

Review: London might be seen as one of the hottest places for new, urban jazz sounds, but this album Second Light from Kepler Is Free shows that Greece also has its own vibrant scene. Their debut album was a quickly sold out success and now the jazz rock ensemble is back with more expansive work that traverses the 60s, 70s, soul jazz, hip hop and experimental in all new ways. The band was founded in 2018 and though all members are relatively young, they show their maturity here with more widescreen and entrancing sounds that come in collaboration with LEX, one of Greece's best-known rappers.

Alex Dima - "Twisted" (6:19)
Luca Piermattei - "Smartcold" (6:25)
Munir Nadir - "Guinea" (6:48)
Smoud Beats - "Orbital 9090" (6:08)
Review: Background is a Rimini-based label which specialises in slinky, playful strains of minimal tech house from some emergent names well worth keeping tabs on. Alex Dima has certainly earned his stripes as a name to get you checking the record, and his opening track 'Twisted' offers the mysterious synth touches and boxy drum machines beats we've come to expect, while Luca Piermattei lays down some seriously satisfying trance-minded melodic lines to loosen the crowd up good and proper. Munir Nadir is in an equally artful, inquisitive mood as he fires off the interlocking riffs and licks of 'Guinea' and then Smoud Beats completes the picture with a diversion into shaky, 90s-styled acid for the jacker in your life.

Review: REPRESS ALERT!: James 'Bursnki' Burnham aka Constant Sound label boss and garage head Instinct is showing no signs of running out of ideas despite having put out such a high amount of high-class club weaponry in the last few years. He goes big once more with this latest 12" which subtly features the iconic vocal cries from Moby's 'Go' but repackaged in a shuffling and banging garage groove with dark synths and wonky bass. On the flip is pure grade bassline track, 'Bassline Track.' It'll take you back to the days when this northern take on garage was all the rage, and why not?

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Drab Majesty's latest EP 'An Object In Motion' is a deep mix of blackgaze and goth psychedelia, consisting of just four tracks flirting with a mystical, guitar-driven spirit. Don't let the number of tracks deceive; the project clocks in at just under half an hour, in large part thanks to the long-form number 'Yield To Force', which pits strange distant alarm sounds against graveyard-shifting fingerstyle guitars, in what amounts to a night-drive around old town suited well to any atmospheric surrealist crime flick. Only your first and last tracks use vocals, and when they do, the combination of deeply high-and-low-end registers are great complements for the artists' lyrical musings on misery and wonderment.

Review: Betty & The Code Red is a life and creative partnership between Benin-born Tunde Obazee and his girlfriend Betty. The pair grew up in Nigeria and would play all manner of instruments to entertain people at the local school before staying together as they went on to live in Italy and the US. Obazee performed at colleges and universities despite no formal training and eventually recorded a selection of tunes together including a small album on relatively new bits of gear like the Yamaha RX7. Especial has collated some of their best work across two new EPs, this being one of them.

Review: There is always a good backstory to the music that Emotional Rescue releases and this EP is a case in point. It comes from Betty & The Code Red and Betty was the girlfriend of Tunde Obazee, a Nigerian-born artist who used music as a "non-violent tool to express his socio-political opinions on global injustice." The pair would entertain people on campus by playing anything they could get their hands on, informed by the old Edo folk songs they had grown up around. They went on to live in Italy and the US and start a family as well as lay down self-released songs that have become cult classics. A selection of them feature on this, the first of two EPs from the pair.

Review: Saigg prioritises techno and electro with a dark, floor-pounding, industrial edge, channelling the heathen hardcore that could be said to be inexorable from his Spanish heritage. On 'Sublim', via the likes of 'Exion' or 'Seven Eleven', we hear just as much, with each track seeming to make up the repetitive backbone that could otherwise characterise European schranz or some darker form of electrance, but with each tracks' beats opting for a more shifty, stop-start set of rhythms. 'Heaven', in particular, is not one to be missed.

Review: One of the most leftfield cinematic successes of 2023 has easily been the bizarre, loosely based on a true story Cocaine Bear, known for being the final on screen performance from the late, great Ray Liotta. As succinct and direct as a title can be, the film tells the tale of a bear who managed to lay his snout in an abundance of mis-located cocaine, before leading to a frenzied rampage. Scored by Devo mastermind Mark Mothersbaugh, the soundtrack serves up a pulsing blend of coldwave synth lines and industrial bombast, with moments of Tangerine Dream indebted electro-ambience sprinkled throughout.

Review: Aussie minimal house man Litmus turned heads with his outing on Up The Stuss last year and now is likely to do so again with another fresh offering, this time via the Aesthetic label. His sound taps right into what is hot right now - spaced out breaks, tech and minimal. 'Round & Round' is a vocal laced broken beat tech cut with slamming drums. 'Profiterole' keeps it tightly coiled with infectious and bouncy drum funk and 'The Rippers' then slips and slides with all the evasive skills of a master boxer. 'Talkie Walkie' closes out with a more busy and trippy mix of synths and percussion.

Review: Nine specially remastered tracks by Sonic Mayhem and Jer Sypult, pressed onto heavyweight discs, from the original soundtrack of the videogame Quake II. Set in a dystopian future world in which an alien race known as the Strogg capture and convert deceased humans as fuel for their horrific war machine, this is first-person shooter music to the max. The bulk of the soundtrack was created by Sascha Dikiciyan aka. Sonic Mayhem, as his first game project among an enviably long credits list. Having caught id Software's ear with an unofficial Quake album (alongside production partner Dave Valencia), Sonic Mayhem went on to develop Quake II's trademark aggro-industrial metal sound, inspired in part by Metallica. The killer riffs, repeated for effect, urge players forward through the Strogg city and beyond, a trail of gibs in their wake.

Review: Appalachian style old-time banjo and guitar player Nora Brown joins with award winning fiddler Stephanie Coleman (of Uncle Earl) to present their new EP, 'Lady Of The Lake', featuring two tight-harmony songs and two instrumental duets. Brought together by Brooklyn's tight-knit old-time music community, Brown and Coleman share a rich musical partnership; Nora is a singer and banjo player, while Stephanie is an award-winning old-time fiddler. 'Lady Of The Lake' is the first time Nora and Stephanie have recorded together since Nora's 2019 debut album Cinnamon Tree; the EP comes in four short movements, beginning with an instrumental congregative ballad in the title track, while moving into the steady movements of 'Gone So Long', on which Brown and Coleman duet and harmonise with ease, and into 'Copper Kettle', a more ruminative meditation on the North-Eastern domestic; jugs filling, whiskey-crafting, pales sloshing and lying supine by junipers.

Review: Jordan GCZ is back on Rawax in quick fashion after the Dizzy Dizzy Dizzy release from earlier in 2023. The machine-jamming maestro is at his best dealing in cosmically-charged techno, and that's exactly what he delivers on this latest record. 'Polyphonic Glide' is swathed in mysterious pads and soulful leads which offset the steady-trucking drive of the drums beautifully. 'Why So Serious' is a subtly bumping cut with a hazy, after hours atmosphere, while 'Sunny Side Up' deals in squashed funk and sparkling arps before 'Undercurrent' takes us home on a bed of celestial synth tones and submerged rhythms. The consistent feel of the record makes it a true delight to melt into - a techno record for sure dreamers.

Review: Along with standard and splatter edition vinyl versions, Sarah Jarosz's Polaroid Lovers also hears a CD issue here via Rounder. The seventh full-length LP from Jarosz hears the singer-songwriter combine aspects of picture and sound, homing in on the aesthetic potential of the instant film camera and the philosophy of production that it conceives. With every song from 'Jealous Moon' to 'Mezcal And Lime' aiming to capture the parallel feeling that the Polaroid camera engenders - that of a moment being so fleeting, and yet making said moment last a lifetime - we're left with a refreshing country-pop album that revels in the present and basks in the little things, while nonetheless not shying from the big questions and heart-thrums behind these pleasures. 'The Way It Is Now' is a particular highlight, making for a cool mix of nocturnal Baltimore-ish house and feel-good songwriting.

Review: The seventh full-length from Sarah Jarosz, Polaroid Lovers is an album-long meditation on those strangely ephemeral moments that indelibly shape our lives. "What I love about a Polaroid is that it's capturing something so fleeting, but at the same time it makes that moment last forever," says the Texas-born singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist. Thanks to the rarefied alchemy that infuses all of Jarosz's output - her finely wrought lyricism, ravishing vocal work, virtuosic yet unfettered musicality - Polaroid Lovers performs the much-needed magic of leading us toward a heightened sense of presence, all while casting a lovely spell with her timelessly powerful songs. Produced by Daniel Tashian at the legendary Sound Emporium, Polaroid Lovers took shape as Jarosz recorded live with musicians like guitarist Rob McNelley, Tom Bukovac on guitar and organ, her husband bassist Jeff Picker, and drummer Fred Eltringham, carving out a viscerally potent but resplendent brand of folk-rock.

Review: Kings of midwestern emo return on their exceptional, devastating eighth full-length Some Of It Was True. Known for putting Scranton, Pennsylvania (home to the likes of Tigers Jaw, Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, Title Fight) on the map, The Menzingers have accomplished a relatively unique feat for artists of the emo/punk variety and that's staying together. Where most acts often have a brief lifespan in which they distil malaise and emotions of that slice of life, what happens when a group continue to remain together, writing, touring and growing over multiple decades? Musically refined to the point where the band sonically toe a line closer to the likes of The Gaslight Anthem and the realms of Bruce Springsteen-inspired Americana-punk, yet lyrically as brazen, dour, uncomfortable and honest as ever, The Menzingers are rare, living proof that an emo band can make it well into thirties/forties, but according to them, it still hasn't really gotten any better.

Aho Ssan debuts on Other People with second solo album and book 'Rhizomes' featuring Nicolas Jaar, Moor Mother, Angel Bat Dawid, clipping., Blackhaine and more.

Paris based composer Aho Ssan, the artist moniker of Niamke Desire, presents his new full-length 'Rhizomes' on the Other People label following his debut LP 'Simulacrum' (2020) and collaborative record 'Limen' (2022) with fellow musician KMRU.

'Rhizomes' draws inspiration from a concept coined and developed between Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guatarri. The idea of an ever evolving structural model, constantly in motion and spreading out in all directions at once. It has no beginning and no end, but always remains in a middle, through which it grows and overflows.

"The root thought is the one that kills everything around itself while the rhizome is the root that stretches out to meet other roots," Desire explains considering the works of French writer Edouard Glissant who addresses questions of identity, crossbreeding of cultures and its evolution.

Much like the name it borrows, Aho Ssan's 'Rhizomes' is a multimedia project that embarks on a myriad of disparate, unique musical and artistic partnerships. This piece adapts this concept to explore the influence of sound materials on creation, the appropriation of a sound object, and the collaborative nature of a composition that responds to modernity.

"Rhizome represents an underground stem system that fosters connections between various organisms and allows them to flourish collectively. It's an album that celebrates collaboration and brings together a diverse group of talented artists," Desire continues.

Aho Ssan collaborated with a comprehensive cast of artists to create a musical rhizome including Nyokabi Kariuki, Josefa Ntjam, Blackhaine, Nicolas Jaar, Resina, R?n C?p ?uoi, Richie Culver, clipping., Lafawndah, 9T Antiope, James Ginzburg, Exzald S, Valentina Magaletti, Moor Mother, Angel Bat Dawid and Mondkopf. Cooperation and community are at the root of this project and the lens through which all the compositions can be understood through.

Aho Ssan will present 'Rhizomes' AV show together with visual artist Sevi Iko Domochevsky at Berlin Atonal 2023. 'Rhizomes' received a Honorary Mention at Prix Ars Electronica 2023 Digital Music

In conjunction with the album, 'Rhizomes' comes complete with a set of illustrations by Kim Grano in a book release. The drawings become a hybrid language, each an emotional response to the musical half. The book contains an extended version of the album with 3 additional songs and 2 longer versions of the album songs. It also includes a sample pack by Aho Ssan and a collection of solo tracks by Elliot Blaise, KMRU, Lamin Fofana, Brodinski & Se?bastien Forrester, Valence Drake, 9T Antiope, Exzald S and Valentina Magaletti. The extended version package is only accessible through the QR codes in the book.

Review: Fresh off the back of his superb new album, Voigtmann is back with an equally juicy new 12" on Half Baked, a party crew with which he has a long association. His intricate minimal style is laid bare here from the off with 'Aesthetic Solutions' offering up a colourful mix of trippy sound designs and sci-fi moods over slick tech drum programming. 'California Cruise Control' gets deeper, with a more prominent squelchy bassline taking centre stage. 'Underexposure' then ups the ante with a more cosmic and driving techno sound and last of all is 'Areola 51', another one built from silky loops and futuristic synths over crisp tech house beats.

Review: Deep house pioneer and Balance label head Chez Damier has recently got back into the scene having had his creativity reinvigorated. He has started a new label House of Chez as a way of sharing it with the world and now comes a bumper collection of all the early releases. He has made his with Ben Vedren as H2H and it's fair to say they are some of the standouts here. Elsewhere, Mosis impresses with the delightfully deep 'Pick It Up' and Damian Rausch remixes Sista Sista's 'Baby Don't' into a super low slung and dusty late night beatdown. The legendary Giorgio Morderer even appears with the diffuse synth magic of late night cruiser 'Engery.'

Review: Scott Monteith returns with his first solo Deadbeat album in five years having recently collaborated with the likes of Sa Pa, Om Unit and The Mole. As ever, Monteith's long-standing dedication to dubwise experimentation drives his music forward on this new set, and there are some welcome threads that run further back in his career. 'Brick Stick Blick Blade (Anger II)' features a vocal flow from Black Noble Oluokun, who first collaborated with Monteith on the 2007 album Journeyman's Annual. That's but one standout element in an album rich with soundsystem immersion and techno propulsion delivered with the meditative poise that we always expect from Deadbeat.
