Review: Those who've been paying close attention will know that Alex 'Omar' Smith has been mixing things up musically of late, veering away from the deep Detroit house he's famed for in order to explore a wider range of influences. New album "You Want" doesn't exactly reverse this trend, but it is far more rooted in his particular brand of seductive, off-kilter deepness and techno-tinged hypnotism than recent singles. That's undeniably a good thing, because nobody does crunchy, machine driven club jams better than the Motor City producer. There are nods towards Italian style piano house, disco, broken beat, jazz funk, Masters at Work and - more surprisingly - industrial techno (see the filthy closing cut) - but the resultant cuts don't sound like anything other than tried-and-tested Omar-S club jams.

Review: Since launching in 2011, James Healy's Air Texture label and compilation series has become something of an institution within the ambient scene. As with its predecessors, the seventh volume in the series has been jointly compiled by two artists with an existing musical relationship, in this case Rrose and Silent Servant. Their selections are on point, drowsily drifting between academic ambient compositions (see Rrose and James Fei's "For Bass Clarinet 8.97 (Rrose Version)", uncomfortable electronic explorations (Ron Morelli, Anthony Child), modular movements (Not Waving), jazz-flecked deep space soundscapes (Luke Slater), horror-influenced throb-jobs (Phase Fatale, June & An-i) and 1990s style ambient electronica (Octa Octa, Function).

Review: Since being touted as jazz's next big thing back in 2014, Moses Boyd has released very little music, though the few EPs he has put out have been uniformly superb. We'd expect plenty of hype around this debut album, but we can assure you it will be deserved. Boyd is a drummer by trade and it's the variety and quality of the rhythms - some framed by traditional jazz, others hip-hop, grime, dubstep, dancehall and Tony Allen style Afrobeat grooves - that really stand out, despite the presence of fuzzy, Fela Kuti style horn motifs, booming basslines, Juju guitar solos, liquid jazz-funk flourishes, dark trip-hop tropes and some suitably inspiring vocals. Boyd may have taken his time, but it was definitely worth the wait.

Review: Kevin Parker is a real enigma of a musician. The brains behind the rightly celebrated and ever-surprising Tame Impala, he's never one for delivering quite what you expect, while still understanding that one of the most important things in music is striking a balance between the familiarity disciples need, and the expressive exploration that can prick the ears of the previously uninitiated.

Album number four, "The Slow Rush", certainly adopts a different outlook to previous undertakings. It also more than lives up to its name. It's smooth, tripped out (perhaps not so surprising on the latter front) and strikingly void of those highs that seem to offer the aural equivalent to some opiate-amphetamine blend. But we don't miss out. Instead, we're given permutations of soul, prog rock and acid house, perhaps making for the most expansive record this guy has been responsible for.

Review: In the summer of 2018, Strut offered up a compilation that mined the extensive back catalogue of Disques Debs International, a Guadeloupe-based label that showcased the finest music to come out of the French-speaking Caribbean between 1950 and 2000. While that set focused on material released between 1960 and '72, this belated sequel showcases cuts featured on Henri Debs' legendary imprint between 1973 and '81. The musical palette is therefore even brighter, breezier and more sun-kissed, offering up cuts that touch on mambo, rumba, Zouk, tropical disco, reggae and the kind of cross-cultural fusions that belie easy categorization. As you'd expect from Strut, the selections are spot on and the re-mastered sound superb. In other words, it's another must-have release from Quinton Scott's imprint.

Review: Katie Gately's second album "Loom" is a very different beast to its predecessor, 2016 debut full-length "Color". Deeply personal and recorded during her mother's ultimately unsuccessful battle against a rare form of cancer, it sees Gately reflect on grief and loss in a surprisingly confident and musically alluring manner. The assembled tracks make extensive use of both densely layered vocal textures and her own distinctive lead vocals, elements which she mixed with ear-catching melodies, woozy electronics and beats that were crafted in part from recordings she made of Californian earthquakes. You'd expect it to be tonally dark given the subject matter, but it's actually far more bold, beguiling and melodic, drawing just as much influence from more pastoral styles of music as Gately's usual experimental electronics and intricate sound design.

Review: Having previously offered live, orchestral style interpretations of works by Madvillain (AKA Madlib and MF Doom) and J Dilla, Leeds collective Abstract Orchestra has decided to tackle the early works of Slum Village, and specifically their "Fan-Tas-Tic" and "Fan-Tas-Tic Volume 2" albums from the late 90s. The resultant two disc set is inspired, delivering warm, soulful and jazzy interpretations of Dilla's brilliant beats and layered backing tracks that makes extensive use of strings, woodwind, brass and some suitably soulful singers. Excitingly the remaining members of Slum Village add their distinctive flows to a number of key cuts, too, adding an air of legitimacy to a project rooted in love for two of hip-hop's greatest albums.

Review: Manchester's Jim Noir returns with ten tracks as strong as anything that he's offered us before. A man known for his mastering of melody and ability to convey complex thoughts and feelings with relatively succinct and direct lyricism, he's the kind of artist you could easily forget how much you've missed until the next release arrives, and the memories and feelings come flooding back. Opening on the soft croon of "Good Mood", it's not long before Noir's true talent begins to show. "Upside Down"'s synth bass reverberations underpin Casio stardust punctuation and slow harmonious keyboard refrains. "Wonders Amber" invokes a journeyman, if not space-age Western theme tune. "Tol Circle" introduces ambient jazz vibes to melting pot. It's varied without every feeling like someone is trying hard to surprise, as if the different stylistic decisions made here came completely naturally. Most likely because they did.

Review: Eric Phillips clearly knows what he's doing when it comes to arranging instrumentation. The composer known here as Kennebec has crafted a truly evocative collection of work on "Departure", managing to squeeze every last drop of emotion from the tools in his belt, or at the end of his fingertips.

The result is a proper journey into places close yet faraway, from opener "As We Grow Older", a classical piano outing, through to the likes of "Wellspring", which paints pictures in the mind of both the Far East and wild northern wildernesses. To describe it as easy listening would be to cast what for many is a very negative, throwaway net over proceedings. Nevertheless, it's very easy to listen to, with "Yesterday, Tomorrow" a real triumph of ivory-expressed feelings, and the final, titular number offering an excellent example of how this artist hasn't forgotten the joys of poppier avenues.

Review: It's not that easy to put your finger on Mush's sound. At times frenetic without being intense, at other moments locked in a sweaty funk, the Leeds outfit certainly seem at home on the ever-reliable Memphis Industries label. Those looking for immediate guitar hooks set in a lo-fi-ish landscape should be in their element.

There's also more than a hint at where they're coming from politically, charting the time of turmoil their native Britain is stuck in on fare such as "Hey Gammonhead!". Moving past the dreaded B-word, the likes of "Existential Dread" almost positions them in a skate-blues guise, the hugely topical "Gig Economy" conjures the propulsive work rate of anyone who has to get to their next task fast in order to make ends meet, while "No Signal In The Paddock" plays with rhythm and time effectively. Review: If you're not up for words like "lovely", "blissful" and "gliding" on record then this one may not be for you. Then again, we'd sooner recommend trying it on for size than skipping past outright, as Tennis prove themselves to be every bit as compelling and captivating as they are seemingly sitting - or more accurately lackadaisically couching out - on some fluffy cloud overhead.

It's perhaps unsurprising that Tennis is married couple Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley, who wrote the nine-tracker while doing what some couples fantasise about, and others think of with fear as to whether it would wind up with one of them killing the other. Four months is a long time to be at sea with your partner, but in this instance it seems to have only united them. Balladry but of particularly exceptional quality, it's hard not to feel jealous at the ties that clearly bind this wife-husband duo.
