Review: Keyboardist, singer, and songwriter Bruce Hornsby is back on his own label Zappo Productions with latest album Flicked. It was co-produced with Tony Berg with extra contributions from Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend, Danielle Haim from Haim) and Rob Moose from Mumford & Sons. The record is the third in a series of collections of songs based on music made for the famous filmmaker Spike Lee. It has an upbeat feel as Bruce heads into new musical territory and experiments with rich sonic textures and rhythms and deep, contemplative lyrics. Dance music, hip hop and plenty of in between sounds are explored on this adventurous record and it will come with a big run of tour dates.

Review: Parlophone are embarking on a mammoth Bowie reissue campaign. 'Outside' was another artifact of the artist's "industrial" '90s era. Unlike 'Earthling', it segwayed neatly between techno and dreamy art rock. For example: the self-titled track is a meditation on time via reverb-drenched band instrumentation, but is suddenly augmented by sampled breakbeats at the halfway mark. 'We Prick You' is similarly industrial, mumbly and weird, yet also just as catchy; this is Bowie's ode to outsider music, made in a weird spate of recording sessions wherein the artist vowed to commit a series of "art crimes".

Review: Well worth a listen, not least because the first disc, which features a recording of them in concert originally broadcast on a US station, shows the band at their raw, rip-roaring best. It boasts fuzzy, full-throttle rhythm and blues versions of some of their greatest moments including 'Gimme Shelter', 'Jumpin' Jack Flash', 'Brown Sugar' and 'Street Fighting Man', which is a riotous and freewheeling treat. Disc two is subtitled 'unplugged', but it isn't - there are plenty of electric instruments involved. What it does feature, though, is more stripped-back, bluesy, semi-acoustic versions taken from sessions recorded especially for various radio stations around the world.

Review: Chris Summerlin's debut album under the boastful, ironic pseudonym "The Last Of The Real Hardmen" follows six years of releasing lathe-cut vinyl and hand-crafted CDRs that received tiny circulation to no more than a small circle of fans. The quality of the tunes on offer suggest this is a third or fourth album rather than an excitable first. Summerlin is a virtuoso guitarist and lays down electric guitar patterns with drums, field recordings and the occasional bottleneck to provide depth and variation. Instrumental music can be hard to keep interesting and this is where Summerlin's skill really kicks in, injecting his form of purist instrumental music with nods towards inevitably John Fahey merged with the full-bodied widescreen emissions of Tortoise... The lovely folks at Birdwar have also included 6 tracks from Summerlin's ultra-limited lathe cut 10" originally released on Lone Hand recordings and this faultlessly adds to the mass of an almost worryingly beautiful album. Otherworldly and timeless.

Review: Guitarist extraordinaire and former Kiss vociferator Ace Frehley's tenth solo album 10,000 Volts is the sonic equivalent of Gakuryu Ishii's bolshy film 'Electric Dragon 80,000 Volts' - a massive, electrifying, out-of-this-world experience that embraces the pure shreddage of the electric guitar, in an ultimate face-off between human and machine. The analogy of overridden circuitry is unsurprisingly useful for evoking related emotions in Frehley's case, as on the title track, on which a perfectly phased-out riff accompanies the lyric, "She hit me like 10,000 volts, when I saw her face". Then come the covers, such as 'Walkin' On The Moon' and the equally raw in-your-facers such as 'Cosmic Heart' and 'Life Of A Stranger'. No fillers here.

Review: This year's Record Store Day event may have been a few weeks ago, but limited-edition releases and reissues are still trickling through. The latest comes courtesy of Irish giants U2, who have chosen to offer-up an expanded, transparent blue vinyl pressing of their first single for Island Records, 1980's '11 O'Clock Tick Tock'. On the A-side you'll find the title track, a prime slice of post-punk rock, and original B-side 'Touch', both of which were produced by Factory Records' in-house mixer Martin Hannett. Over on the flip the band has chosen to showcase two previously unreleased recordings from a live gig at the Marquee in London in September 1980. These show Bono and company at their sizzling early best, and should be regarded as a must-listen for serious fans.

Review: In a collaboration you might never have expected but somehow makes perfect sense, original Brit blues mastermind Jeff Beck teams up with a little known American by the name of Johnny Depp to render some of the latter's songs alongside some finely selected covers. From The Beach Boys to John Lennon, The Velvet Underground to Killing Joke and more besides, this is the sound of two lifelong music lovers letting it all hang out and playing with the impassioned energy and innocence of youth. More than just a throwaway side project for a global superstar, this is a deeply discerning project which frames Depp's music in a whole new light.

Review: As we write this The Beatles have just managed to put out their last ever, they say, new single. By harnessing the vast powers of AI and feeding it a dusty old clip of him singing back in the day, they have even managed to recreate the voice of John Lennon. It's a reminder of how ahead of their time the Liverpool band always was, even back in the 1960s. And that's when this album London to Manchester was recorded live on October 13, 1963, which marked the point at which the press knew the band was going to be global superstars and features all their biggest hits from this early-on time.

Review: The Marc Bolan 'Songwriter' series has proven hugely successful and after the focus was on 1972 last time out, this time we jump another year back to 1971. This vinyl-only and intimate release shines a light on the private life of Bolan and how that altered his approach to songwriting. It was in 1972 that his band T-REx became chart-topping superstars and across the 19 tunes here are long versions of tunes like 'Hot Love' and 'Get It On' as well as plenty of b-sides, working versions and demos and a nearly 15-minute long acoustic demo of 'Children of Rarn.'

Review: Earlier in the year, the Black Crowes invited Amazon cameras into Sunset Sound Studio in Los Angeles - one of the most iconic recording spaces in the World - to watch them perform and record a string of songs that were originally recorded and released 50 years ago, way back in 1972. It made perfect sonic sense - after all, the band's trademark sound leans heavily on classic rock, rhythm & blues and glam-rock from the period. This EP showcases the recordings of that session, with the plentiful highlights including a gritty, life-affirming rhythm and blues rendition of the Temptations' 'Papa Was a Rolling Stone', a stripped-back take on the Rolling Stones 'Rocks Off' and a pleasingly fuzzy, heavyweight translation of Bowie's 'Moonage Daydream'.

Review: The Black Crowes have never been ones to hide their inspirations. The classically-styled US blues rockers have turned their hands to plenty of covers over the years, and this time they're offering up a short album's worth of renditions under the banner of 1972. The year doesn't so much nod to the songs specifically as the feeling, and a particular era of sound they were aiming for. Given their skin in the game, it's no surprise to hear them nail the likes of 'Rocks Off' and 'Papa Was A Rolling Stone', paying homage and doing their own thing in equal measure.

Review: Kazuki Tomokawa is one of the most enigmatic figures in Japan's modern musical history. Not only a poet and a singer, he's also a bicycle race commentator and a self-described vagabond, and in the 70s he set his poems to music as Japan enjoyed something of a folk music boom. It was 1975 when he recorded his first album, in particular teaming up with percussionist Toshiaki Ishizuka for a fruitful musical partnership. Blank Forms has been diligently reissuing much of Tomokawa's music, and now they're turning their attention to this deluxe three CD boxed set comprised of Finally, His First Album, Straight from the Throat, and A String of Paper Cranes Clenched between My Teeth.

Review: 24 Nights (Blues) is a new vinyl reissue of the second disc of Eric Clapton's legendary live album 24 Nights, originally released in 1991. Splitting up the record into two discs reflects Clapton's fans' patience, and time they devote to specific parts of the musician's many works. It features Clapton performing blues songs over the course of a 42-concert stint at the Royal Albert Hall, together with such guitar titans as Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Phil Collins and Steve Ferrone joining him on stage. Yet another reissue celebrating the arc of Clapton's mammoth career, it's certainly not one to be missed.

The former lead singer of The Jam and Style Council brings his soulful voice to album that has a slew of interesting guest artists, with contributions from Suggs, Noel Gallagher and Bobby Gillespie to name just a few. The lead single will be 'Rise Up Singing', which immediately transports to us a carefree 60s sound, 'Soul Wandering' is a powerful rock track where Paul really shines and is one of our favourites here. The modfather is back.

Review: The Mighty AC/DC will always invoke images of monstrous stadia packed with tens if not hundreds of thousands of heads stomping about to power riffs, tight bass and highs. But these masters of heavy, boozy, gutsy, bloodied rock 'n' roll didn't start out on those main stages, and earned their crust doing the pub circuits during the mid-1970s. The point being, they also know their way around intimate spots, and even when supersized that masterful rapport, and the feeling the outfit are playing at you specifically, still radiates. 80s Radio Broadcasts, which comprises tracks recorded live on a major tour, is a case in point. Yes, it's loud, perhaps some of the loudest concert recordings these guys have ever done, but there's a raucousness to the cacophonies that's more wild barroom than Wembley.

Review: The Quireboys are up there with the very best of the gypsy rock and roll scene. Their A Bit Of What You Fancy album is now a hard to believe 30 years old and to mark the occasion it gets a limited edition reissue that has been totally re-recorded. The hard working band bring plenty of new life to the music, fresh perspective and oodles of energy. It comes on special blue vinyl and comes after a sell out tour of 35 dates around the UK in 2019 and reaffirms the band as at the top of their game.

Review: Anniversary Editions rarely involve entire re-records, but that's exactly what The Quireboys have gone and done. Enduring a slew of lineup changes and fallouts, the London rock place foursome (formerly a fivesome) here deliver an entirely fresh take on the 1990 original LP, albeit with many of the founding members no longer in tow. Not to worry, though, because the original songsmiths Spike and Guy Griffin continue to head up the duty of reinterpreting each song. This one also contains two live tracks, taken from the Quireboys - 35 & Live.

Review: A Divine Symmetry is the new compilation of demos and rarities from David Bowie's Hunky Dory days, providing an alternative take on the pop chameleon's 1970s long-haired, flared heyday. This is hippie Bowie in full lo-fi glory, as you've never seen or heard him before. A mixture of alternative versions and demos, this is selective compared to the X4 CD set but still a new look at one of the most fiercely examined artists about.

Review: Divisive wouldn't even come close to describing Panic! At The Disco's A Fever You Can't Sweat Out. For some, even the band's name was enough to put them off, for others, this record arrived riding on the tail end of the second emo wave, which in itself may have been too little too late (or too much?) to stand any chance of saving the genre from becoming a parody of itself.

And yet in the eyes of many, A Fever remains a landmark release from a band that helped define the sound's resurgence at that time. It's a fraught and angsty ode to the moments in our lives when, for a few at least, hanging out in shopping malls being sarcastic and embracing affectation is the only real way to spend the weekend. Recreate those memories with this 25th anniversary edition of an album you already know you love and want. Or not.

Review: Definitely one for The Stooges Geek Den, or whatever the inner circle of fans is actually called (let's face it, probably not that). A Fire of Life doesn't actually contain any songs that we're not already familiar with, but it's how the songs were recorded that makes all the difference here. Each was captured directly into one mixing desk or another during the band's original iteration, back when guitarist Ron Asheton was still playing guitar.

Some of these were studio sessions, others live shows, all of them remind us of their unbridled and unfettered talent. Spread out across two vinyls, we have all the big anthems from the first two albums, with many not just re-recorded but full-blown alternative versions of tracks. Released to coincide with the now-legendary 1972 King's Cross concert (another in-the-know fact that will appeal to many), it's a special edition to behold.

Review: A Gift from a Flower to a Garden made for a few firsts: the first double LP of Donovan's career, one of the first box sets in pop and, most importantly for Donovan himself; the first pop album for the children of tomorrow. He resolved to make A Gift from a Flower to a Garden an album of two halves. The first, Wear Your Love Like Heaven, was intended for his own generation as they started to think about the kind of world they wanted to leave behind. The second, For Little Ones, was for the children they had or would have in the years to come. The result was a kaleidoscopic folk-jazz suite on the power of love, imbued with all the romance and mystery of an Arthur Rackham illustration for an ancient English fairy tale. The songs, remarkably adventurous given Donovan was a globally famous singer at his commercial height, combined the influences he had amassed so far. There is something about A Gift from a Flower to a Garden that could never be repeated, though. It is such an innocent evocation of the childlike imagination, so redolent of its time, yet set apart from it too. All these years later, the peaceful qualities of this pioneering, enchanting, deeply unusual album feel more valuable than ever.

Review: Vinyl Lovers presents 'A Hard Road' from John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers. More than a compilation, this album is a complete document of the Bluesbreakers' recordings with Peter Green, of which 'A Hard Road' was just the most prominent part. Bonus tracks include several non-LP singles, among them the 1967 B-side "Rubber Duck," which has never before appeared on LP.

Review: Some fifty years into a career in which he's managed to confound expectation at every turn, Neil Young continues both to keep his fans guessing whilst offering something uniquely primal. Whilst on the one hand, an acoustic album of covers might appear to be a step into crowd-pleasing compromise, especially when they include material by the like of Dylan, Springsteen and Gordon Lightfoot, and a duet with Jack White. Yet given this is Neil Young, this material is transformed by means of primitive recording techniques and world-weary pathos into a thing of spectral charm and eerie, small-hours potency. Another gem from an eternal iconoclast.

Review: Mark Eric Malmborg was a 1960s Hollywood actor, male model and musician. Along with with arranger and ex-Animal Vic Briggs, Malmborg constructed this beautiful album, a unique pastiche of four freshman/Beach Boys sensibilities coupled with wistful melancholia. Defiantly soft, 1969's A Midsummer's Day Dream caught the tail end of Los Angeles' 60s pop innocence perfectly, just as it slipped into infinity. Though it forms part of an expanded edition that includes of fifteen extra bonus ephemera, this vinyl reissue is true to the original as it was first released, in all its orange-glowing glory.

Review: Supersystem release their new album "A Million Microphones" on Touch & Go. Refusing to be satisfied by the familiar, Supersystem has always been ready to destroy a song in order to put it back together again. Hip-hop, electronica, punk rock, so-called world music - a little bit of everything has gone into the architecture. This destruct/construct reflex is groomed and refined on the NY/DC quartet's latest long player "A Million Microphones". The record's eleven startlingly original tracks are saturated with African-tinged guitar, complex polyrhythms, atmospheric synthesizers, jaunty, funk-fried bass, and infectious beats. To complement Supersystem's tight-knit arrangements, vocalists Pete Cafarella, Rafael Cohen, and Justin Destroyer have transformed an effusive stew of off-kilter lyrical observations into the most potent melodies the band has yet to pen. Each member's unique contributions result in an intriguing variety that carries Supersystem somewhat off the map. Extending the explorations of "Always Never Again", their previous Touch & Go release, all of the parts and pieces of "A Million Microphones" are on the same squad, working together to make Supersystem's unique vision of pop music come alive.

Review: There was naturally much excitement when A Moon Shaped Pool, Radiohead's surprise ninth studio set, popped up on streaming and download services back in May. Here it gets a CD release, offering those who prefer physical products a chance to bathe in its' woozy eccentricities. Seen by some as a return to their arty rock roots following an extended period spend exploring electronics, the album's 11 tracks draw on a variety of influences (krautrock, ambient, Pavement, James Blake, Stockhausen, intense melancholia etc.), with predictably impressive results. Occasionally elegant, string-laden and grandiose, always beautiful, and sometimes intensely moving, A Moon Shaped Pool is undeniably up there with the band's best work.

The trio featured vocalist and guitarist Ikumi "Ikkyu" Nakajima, guitarist Motoko "Motifour" Kida, and bassist Hiromi "Hirohiro" Sagane and they soon became synonymous with intricately constructed rhythms. They are prolific, too, having put out seven albums so far and A N D is their second from March 2015. It came on their own label Bakuretsu Records and now gets reissued on black and pink vinyl. Its meticulously and tightly woven grooves still stand up almost a decade on.

Review: A yawning chasm has been left in rock music by the untimely departure of David Robert Jones, making documents such as this one all the more poignant and powerful, all the more so for it recording the last tour he embarked on. Here, with a crack selection of musicians including longterm sidemen Mike Garson and Earl Slick, he essayed classics like 'Life On Mars', '80s tunes like a beautifully rearranged 'Loving The Alien' and newer material 'Reality' itself with enough charisma and style to fuel fifty live shows. There'll never be a star that burns brighter than Bowie, and he's on scintillating form here.

Review: Just as some of her older albums are being reissued, American singer-songwriter Beth Hart returns with a fascinating new album that has long been rumoured: A Tribute to Led Zeppelin is a profound work by the Grammy-nominated powerhouse vocalist that channels fellow legendary singer Robert Plant. It comes on two translucent orange vinyl and across the nine tracks the artist really manages to capture the wide spectrum of sounds the Zep were known for. Super-producer Rob Cavallo and engineer Doug McKean work don the record and helped bring everything from rock to psychedelia, folk to prog to jazz to the fore.

Review: It is that time of year when the same very limited selection of Xmas songs get piped through every PA in the land. But you can now improve your Christmas soundtrack by at least some percent with this heavyweight double album on translucent magenta and clear vinyl featuring a weird and wonderful array of festive-themed rock, soul and pop songs. Chances are many of these will be new to you - but there are some real gems here, such as the gentle tiny of sleigh bells on Marvin Gaye's 'Purple Snowflakes,' Booker T & The MG's funky 'Jingle Bells' and The Kinks rock licked 'Father Christmas.'

Review: Originally released in 1973, the album shows the duo's eclectic mix of folk, rock, and soul influences, expertly crafted under the production of Arif Mardin. Tracks like 'When the Morning Comes' and 'Had I Known You Better Then' highlight Daryl Hall's and John Oates' songwriting ability and vocal harmonies, while 'She's Gone' stands out as a true classic with its emotive arrangement and memorable hooks. The reissue offers a fresh perspective on the album's enduring appeal, with remastered sound bringing out the nuances of the original recordings. From the subtle acoustic reggae vibe of 'When the Morning Comes' to the funky folk groove of 'Lady Rain,' each track showcases the duo's musical versatility and storytelling prowess. Overall, the reissue of Abandoned Luncheonette serves as a timely reminder of Hall and Oates' early brilliance and sets the stage for a new generation of listeners to discover and appreciate their timeless music.

Review: There's a chance this Liverpudlian four piece will be familiar by now. This, their 11th studio outing, first unveiled as the 1960s slipped into the 70s, is a bonafide epic from an outfit that weren't lacking in epics; in many ways a culmination of their time together, marking the end of their active years and beginning of their legacy. By this stage, then, they've emerged from years spent on the inner journey and time on the outer, space cadeting to the hallucinogenic fuelled tones of "Sgt. Peppers" and "Revolver". Of course, there's still plenty of explorations happening, but the gritty blues rock of opening track "Come Together" really sets the tone. Five decades on, it still sounds great and maybe even better than you remember. Even if you own the original, this anniversary edition is worth having.
