Review: Zon Records has released music digitally before, though this is the first time the wilfully eclectic Belgian label - and the producers behind the label, also called Zon - has made it onto wax. As vinyl debuts go, it's pretty good. They set their stall out with title track 'Keys For Days', a warming and sun-splashed slab of tech-tinged deep house peppered with warming chords, jazzy synth-bass and subtle TB-303 motifs, before diving into deeper, more immersive territory on the gorgeous, sunrise-ready 'Spring Break' (featuring vocalisations from Lotte Sarembe). Over on the reverse, 'Upon Us' is an analogue-rich chunk of deep tech-house, while Ukrainian producer Kirik's remix of the same track is a far more bass-heavy, tactile and otherworldly affair.

Please Please (Bellaire remix) (4:41)

Review: 40 years ago this rare afro-disco track made big waves. It's the work of Cameroonina disco talent Zogo and now gets a big reissue along with two remixes from the much loved Gerd Janson and Bellaire. The original is pure joy, with trilling guitars and a funky bass riff that does plenty of work up and down the scales. The percussion is just as lively, while the vocal finishes it off nicely. Bellaire flips it into a more contemporary bit of punchy disco house and Janson sits somewhere in between, with plenty of the upbeat energy of the original but some boosted modern flourishes to help it soar.

Review: As the Grand Ancestor label rolls towards its 20th resale, the 17th comes from Zion Train in the form of a limited and hand-numbered 180 gram 12" featuring a hefty pair of dubs. The A-side features 'Oya' (20th Century dub) - a seriously heavyweight cut with skewed contemporary synth and hooky vocals buried deep in the mix. 'Shango' (20th Century dub) is a more melodic affair with whimsical leads and a hint of old school reggae next to plenty of modern reverb techniques and hissing less that take off like spacecraft.

Review: Zeta Reticula is a Solvenian producer who you might also know as Umek. Away from his big room techno sounds under this alias he crafts much more nuanced and essential electro sounds as evidenced on this fierce five tracker pressed to limed clear vinyl. 'Wakefulness' is all jacked up drums and interplanetary acid and the beats bang just as hard on 'Analgesic Pathways' while 'Cholinergic Projections' is the most white knuckle ride of the lot with whip-snapping snares and hellish synths bringing the terror. 'Reticulate Speech' and 'Abducting Humans' close down with more melodic electro sounds.

Review: Umek's long-standing electro alias Zeta Reticula mints a self-steered new label with more of that nasty, slickly rendered machine funk business he's so respected for. 'Ascending Pathways' sets the tone perfectly with its nervy leads and bruising low end, while 'Chromosphere' digs into a knotty, rhythmic workout peppered with nagging arps. 'Modulatory Functions' has a more open, melodious flavour for those who like a lighter vibe, and 'Caudal Regions' closes the record out with an even more emotive tint to act as a perfect foil to the sinister machinations of the A side.

Review: In recent times the Zenker Brothers seem to have spent more time running their inspired Ilian Tape imprint than they have producing music. While we'd hardly criticize their choices - Ilian Tape goes from strength to strength - it's certainly good to have them back. The Munich-based siblings begin their first outing of 2020 with the melodious, far-sighted electro shuffle of "Shaketown", before wrapping mangled, mind-altering electronic riffs around a crunchy techno groove of "Chi Boost". "Bengel Mode" sees the siblings successfully combine alien-sounding riffs with a denser techno rhythm track, while closing cut "Outside" is a sparkling trip into hypnotic, slow-release ambient techno territory with nary a kick-drum in sight.

Review: .Zurich has a small but well formed scene that now bears fruit in the form of this new label, alt?r:alt?r. Zefzeed takes the reins of the first sonic statement with four tracks of sophisticated and deep house and tech. 'A Well Watered Fern' is brain cleansingly smooth with buffed metal synths and liquid grooves. There is a darker minimal march to 'Save The Day' that reminds of Melchior and a sweaty pump to 'Farm That Face' that makes it a standout. 'Fishbed Touring' swings low with tripped-out designs and melted synths.

Review: Garage powerhouse Zed Bias is back with more old school garage brilliance with the new single 'Shell Them Again' featuring the vocals of Yung Saber and Brakeman. The original has plenty of retro signifiers from the low-end wobble to the withering synth effects, plus crisp hits and jostling drums. After the dub mix comes a remix from Zed himself alongside Safire which is much more dirty and raw. The beats are broken up so the track takes on a dubstep quality as the low-end oscillations bring the weight and drums hit with more force. Finally, the acappella closes out this fresh 12" on IFG.

Review: Zed Bias has been a bass, dub and garage king since forever, but his star shows no signs of diminishing any time soon. For this one he has worked with Shumba Youth on a new single that finds him dipping into a world of dancehall and ragga. 'London Town' is heavy, with real bass weight, churning drums and fizzing digital synths under the superb bars from Shumba who muses on the state of London right now. Next to that are slithering leads and sci-fi pads to make for a fine future vibe. The acappella is served up on the flip for DJs who want to play.

Review: Zed Bias's superb recent single with Shumba Youth is a modern fusion of dancehall and ragga that is perfect for loud deployment on top sound systems. Here though it comes in four different versions, all of which tap into different aspects of the UK hardcore continuum. The 4x4 Garage mix is just that and perfect for grotty warehouses, the 4x4 VIP Refix has a more prominent baseline feel and the Jeftuz UKG remix is a broken beat killer with wub-wub goodness. Last of all is the restless and kinetic 2-step mix to close out a high grade 12".

In its original form, it has an alluring vocal charm with unsettling chords over a grinding bassline and sharp percussion. The El B remix brings fleshier low ends and more swagger and shuffle while the vocals remain in place to blow up your spot. To close out the EP, Dawn Raid remixes with a high-energy jungle sound full of old-school signifiers. A proper EP for proper dance floors.

He has more than a quarter of a century of experience in the game and of eyeing new talents and helping them to shine and has always had a collaborative approach to music that will continue to define this label's MO. Zed is minting the label with a new single alongside award-winning d&b MC Inja. 'You Should Dance' pairs his warming tones with infectious garage drums and smeared, soothing chords that radiant heat. Review: Only Swamp 81's second full length release in its four year lifespan thus far, Boss is Dave Jones' third transmission for Loefah's label under the Zed Bias moniker after debuting on Swamp in 2011 with the now sought-after double pack Stubborn Phase. Like that release, Boss sees Jones engage in more of the sort of heavy set garage-indebted house music he's so good at. Tracks like "Eingang", "Boss Skank" and "We Are There" (which features the vocals of house legend Roy Davis Jr) could easily slot into most contemporary house sets, while the likes of "Ye", "Cupper", "We're There" and "Flamm" offer the kind of darker, more syncopated material that will have fans of muscular bass music salivating.

Review: As one of the instigators of the UK 2-Step sound that paved the way for the seminal movements in Dubstep and Grime, Zed Bias, aka Maddslinky, is a true pioneer and stands as one the Godfathers of the UK Bass scene. With a prolific career spanning more than two decades, we're honoured to welcome him into the Unchained family with his debut release on the label.

His powerful 4-track EP echoes both cutting edge modern electronic as well as the nostalgia of UK dance history. All tracks wander into upper BPM territory and sonically span very wide ground; whether this be "Beijing", a track sure to carve itself a place in classic anthem history; or "DoenCa Tropical", a tune which draws new broken-beat boundaries around the 160bpm ethos.

Two tracks feature collaborations with Strategy and Bugz In the Attic's G Force - both music defining legends in their own right.

Spanning both the Drum'N'Bass universe and thought-provoking left-field bass, we hope this fresh release has you covered from club to couch.

Review: Newcomer Zara makes her debut on Salt Mines with an EP that takes its cues from "the sounds, colours and textures of festivals in the Australian bush." As a result, it is organic techno with a rich array of organic and natural details that make it an experience for both body and head. 'Breathe' opens with bird calls, the sound of scuttling insects and nice leggy, rubbery drums. 'Fragments' is a more ragged and rough rhythm with the sound of stampeding herds and 'Di Plastica' is a more aqueous dub with neon fireflies darting about the mix. A Mara mix offers pure liquid techno joy.

Review: Zapatilla, better known as Louis Hackett, is a founding member of Brownswood 's Owiny Sigoma Band and key collaborator on Eska's Mercury nominated debut album, but has a neat side hustle making house music with one foot in the gentle melodies of Balearic beat and another in the irresistible energy of Afrobeat. It's a recipe that he continues over onto this fine four tracker, which opens with the smoothly grooving but lively 'Like Dat' before 'Zimzimmer' builds up around a gently frenetic Afro guitar riff. On the flip, 'Disco Facial' is slower and more retro, with a synth line that could be from a lost John Carpenter soundtrack. 'Self Isolated' completes the package in its most esoteric fashion, another synth work rooted in the past, this time perhaps echoing the approachable experimentalism of Jean Jacques Perry.

Review: zake, best known for his work on the prolific Past Inside The Present label that he co-founded, lines up with esteemed soundtrack wizard James Bernard and Marc Ertel, whose work centres on the healing, restorative powers of music. The album for Florina Cassettes boasts five tracks that veer on the grander end of the ambient scale - big, airy, blustery mini-symphonies that blow out the cobwebs, from opening tune 'Protector Of The Night' to closer 'Who Hath Listened'. If there is a moment of respite, it's the midway point, 'Sustained Beath', way more static and calm than the tracks it intersects. It's still filled with drama and emotion, as everything here does.

It's undeniably an album worth waiting for though, with the three meditative, enveloping tracks offering a perfect blend of the Zake's droning, densely layered "drone-scapes" and Helsen's glistening and fluid processed guitar sounds. For proof, check 19-minute opener 'Northern Cross', where starry, slow-burn electronics, distant guitars and yearning, unfurling melodies gently ebb and flow across the sound space, and the becalmed, field recording-sporting haziness of 'Knowledge Rooms Parts I & II'. Many of them are brilliantly done drone pieces that are expressive in beautifully done tones that rise and slide. The heavenly 'Braken' as the opener for example. The layered tones creatively mask the depth of the drones to the point of a spontaneous feel that is almost changed by anything as slight as a light wind. 'Betrayal' present bells that ring out from the meandering depth while 'Blight' is deep and foreboding tot he point of being machinelike. 'Tape 4' has broken drum loops and sustained chords locking you in rhythm and 'Tape 2 022' then has urgent drums cantering like a Derby-wining horse and unsettling synth loops. 'Exotic Passage' coasts along serenely with gently slapped bongos and warm electric piano, definitely a weapon to have in one's warm up arsenal. Review: Brandee Younger has always been a unique artist: a harpist who frequently utilises the instrument in a wide variety of (sometimes surprising) musical contexts and whose impressive CV also includes work with hip-hop luminaries such as Common and Ryan Leslie. On her fifth solo album, and second for Impulse!, Younger continues this adventurous but highly entertaining approach, offering up a mixture of original compositions and Dorothy Ashby covers that frequently draws influence from hip-hop, smooth jazz, modern soul and fusion. Highlights are plentiful, with our picks including the luscious, harp-laden soul head-nod of 'Brand New Life' (where Mumu Fresh delivers a sublime lead vocal), Pete Rock hook-up 'Livin' And Lovin' In My Own Way', and the duelling harp and vibraphone solos of the vintage Roy Ayers-inspired goodness of 'You're a Girl For One Man Only'.

This set, which features the band's later line-up, was recorded on the main stage at the Phoenix Festival (remember that) back in 1996 and first broadcast on UK radio shortly afterwards. It's a typically dynamic performance, captured with full crowd reaction for added atmosphere, with the legendary Canadian-American musician and his band-mates laying down terrific versions of favourites including 'Heart of Gold', 'Rockin' In The Free World', 'Cinnamon Girl' and 'Like a Hurricane'.

What Do You See In Her? (3:02)
I Remember The Summer (3:15)
Review: Inell Young's What Do You See In Her is often said to be one of the most powerful soul songs to have ever come from the great New Orleans scene. Eddie Bo is of course the great man behind it - as he was so many of these great tunes from this place and this ear - with the voice of Inell adding the spice. Finding an original is hard as, and will also cost you very close to four figures, so snap this one up while you can. Both sides are pure gold.

Bobo's Reason (8:15)
Beggar's Run (5:10)
Bisso Love (6:55)
Review: French DJ-turned-remixer Young Pulse's popular Paris Edits series notches up seven volumes, this time via a three-tracker packed to the rafters with heavyweight disco-funk grooves. Arguably the best of a very strong bunch is 'Bobo's Reason', a reverb and delay-laden, slightly beefed-up rearrangement of an excitable, horn-heavy disco-soul tune from the Philadelphia school of orchestrated dancefloor fun. There is of course plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere across the EP though, with the spacey, synth-laden, percussion-rich disco-boogie of 'Beggar's Run' being joined on side two by the high-octane disco-funk weight of 'Bisso's Love'.

Olta Karawame - "Folie Sans Dent" (6:05)
Review: Correcciones Calypso returns from a generous hiatus with the fourth edition of its acclaimed edit series, replete with four re-edits that veer from the subtle to the downright brazen. Thomass Jackson and INigo Vontier invite the French duo Youkounkoun to open proceedings with an insane early 80s edit full of big drums and exotic touches that's been blowing dancefloors all around the world for the past years - and definitely resides in the brazen category, despite a lot of work having gone into it. Olta Karawame make their debut on the series with a powerful, compact edit full of ballsy keyboard riffing and a military-sized kick drum that is guaranteed to have heads banging . To complete the release label bosses Thomass and INigo deliver edits of their own with their characteristic sound, giving this EP maximum a value for money factor and entertainment from start to finish.

Review: Youandme has been around and turning out the dubbed-out sounds for seemingly decades. He lands now on the equally long-standing Rhythm Cult label with a limited and splattered new 12" that delves into the depths of minimal tech house. It features lead cut 'PPPPP' - a smooth, frictionless masterclass in hypnotic sound designs and feathery grooves with occult synth motifs. Berlin's Ian Pooley then offers a moody basement house mix, Cinthie gets into some flailing and dusty breakbeat action and Yotam Avni remixes with a more melodic sound laden with lush bells.

Review: Josh is the London producer who is on a blistering run of form right now. His blazing sounds come built on plenty of rugged breaks and now take him to the Distant Horizons label. This one starts with he hardcore garage 2-step of 'Don't Say' with its classic samples and nimble bass dancing about the mix. There is another perfect mix of rough and smooth on 'All That Acid' with its crashing hits but buttery vocal stabs and 'Choose One' then strips things back to a more blissed out garage vibe and 'Home' follows tact with silky chords and rubbery basslines.

Review: The Yoruba Singers reinterpreted Guyana folk music and infused it with Afro-roots and culture on this double A-side 7". Now for the first time every it gets reissued on vinyl. This release came a year after the group's debut album Ojinga's Own and were recorded in Barbados and released on the Green Shrimp label. They were big regional has with dancers lapping the grooves throughout the Caribbean and South America. The sounds are said to be the building blocks for what went on to become known as the Champeta Criolla sound in the Caribbean coast of Colombia.

Review: One of the foremost female frontrunners in the Dutch jungle/rave scene Yorobi makes her debut on Sneaker Social Club with this powerful slab of wax justice that ranges from the ambient title track 'Eden' to a contemporary breakbeat interpretation of a traditional black spiritual 'Motherless Child'. Between we have the eerie tension and percussive drama of 'Stabs', the sweet dreamy shuffles of 'Model Patient' and the gentle transportive charm of 'Rhode To Knowhere'.

Review: Following her awesome Sneaker Social EP earlier this year, Amsterdam rave queen Yorobi returns with another wonderfully wide-armed collection on her own label On My Own Terms. Entitled 'Projection Palace', the title track undergoes two renditions; the Blue Lines-era Massive Attack inspired Reflections mix and the much heavier junglised Night Terrors mix. In between we have two other beguiling bumpers - 'Mico Aggressions' is a brain rattling electroid buzz fest while 'OIC' takes us on an abrasive trip up and down the hardcore continuum. All four grooves are exceptional.

Review: The next tasty drop from the Fruits label, now well over 50 releases deep, is a pan-European affair featuring Bristol singer Joe Yorke and Swiss reggae band The 18th Parallel. The original on the A-side is a deliciously authentic and super sweet bit of rootsy lover's rock. 'End Of The Day' has lazy-as-you-like guitar riffs over loose drums with a falsetto from Yorke soaring high up in the sky on a warm summer's day. On the flip side comes the traditional dub version which is more empty and sparse to allow the reverb room to make its mark while the original vocal is also allowed plenty of space to bleed into.

This third outing deals in the sort of deep and intimate sounds you can expect to hear in the club on any given night and it comes from Closer resident Yone-ko, who is a techno maestro from Japan but currently based in Berlin. There is a melancholy to thee tunes, with their wispy pads and dreamy chords, while the rolling, scuffed up drums lock you into a state of trance. Minimal in design yet maximal in impact, this is high-grade stuff.

Review: Planet Rhythm's third transmission is another various artists' affair that takes no prisoners. This is straight-ahead techno that is proud of its perfect planed linear loops and ability to get you in a mediative head space. Erdem Yetim kicks off with the seriously weighty 'Perfect Silence' and its panel-beaten loops. Simone Tavazzi's 'Pyramid' is another hefty kicker with icy hi hat ringlets and fleshy drums while 'Das Ego' is as good as reductive dub techno gets. Dave Simon hits the nail on the head with his 'Dubby Stomper.'

He was raised in an orphanage and had to deal with being an albino but still became a superstar of the scene and is celebrated as one of the rudest dancehall toasters of the 1980s. He has had many detractors as fans of his unique, witty style and slower singing delivery and 'Workie Workie' is one of his man classic jams. It comes here in original form as well as an instrumental and B-side version.

Review: Yazzus made a massive impression on us with her last outing in March last year on Mall Grab's Steel City Dance Discs label and now gets a suitable step up to the mighty Berlin techno label Tresor. She manages to lay down some bombastic and elastic rhythms on 'Human Error Processor' which has the kick drums pinging about the mix, before hammering a more searching and militant techno groove on 'Perforated.' There is sleazy and unrelenting energy to the chaotic percussion and synths of 'Metro City Bay Area' and that only gets turned up to 11 for the final outing, 'Three Deities'.

Review: The Vivian Jackson label has locked in this crucial reissue of a roots classic from Yabby U, a late Jamaican artist and producer who released it originally back in 1977. 'Chant Down Babylon' is a warm one with lazy and rolling drums and natty acoustic guitar riffs with Jah worshiping vocals and Babylon yearnings that unfurl up top with a real smoothness. On the flip, you will find the 'Chant Dub Mix' which removes the vocal chantings and allows the hats to hiss and the snares to take off like UFOs while the fleshy low end is couched in oodles of reverb.

On the A side we have some rather deep down and dirty blaxploitation vibes (also sampled by Jamie 3:26 on "Dr F**K" several years ago) over a minimal proto-house drum track on "XXX" by XXX. 'Daydreaming' is pure good time music, packed with sunshine and to-die-for boogie baselines that wiggling away beneath jazz-funk chords and funked up drums. Review: MELMAK's new 12" is entitled All Stars: The Rave Years which gives you an idea of what to expect. These are high-tempo, dense and rave ready sounds from the drum & bass vanguard. There is plenty of space out cosmic energy to the exploratory leads of X Termal's 'Tragnal Kozze' then 'What If' (The Doulo Klan edit) is a tightly coiled stepper. Bugger lays down a hyper speed rhythm with drilling bass and slapping hits on 'No Silence Now' and Umbra's 'The Big Dumb' is a real slow-motion churner with textural synths and alien sound designs.
