Fulltone Plimsoul Hi-Gain Distortion/Overdrive Pedal
Cat: 782862 • View all Effects pedals

Distortion/overdrive pedal
Notes: For many, many years you've basically had 2 choices for your Overdrive/Distortion pedals: You could either get "Soft-clipped" Bluesy, slightly compressed, (Toob Screemer, FD2, etc.) type Overdrive pedals... or you could get "Hard-Clipped" (OCD, Distortion+, Boss DS-1, etc.) type Distortion pedals.

What if there was a pedal that offered both? There is now... the Fulltone PlimSoul with it's Patented and completely unique dual stage clipping circuit which VERY accurately replicates not only the sound, but *the feel *of a tube amp with all of its subtleties and complexities.

PlimSoul has those Softer Bluesey, Compressed capabilities but also has a Second Stage that you can roll in with the turn of a little dial to add that firmer, crunchier, British output tube style Distortion! What's more is you not only hear and feel it... you can SEE the pedal reacting to your every mood via a firey LED that glows brighter and dimmer depending on how distorted it is and how hard you're hitting it.

Touch sensitive? Doesn't get any better.

Clean up with the guitar's volume control? More than any, yes, even more than the OCD.

Speaking of OCD, people ask "What's the comparison?" Easy answer: OCD has an honest flat EQ, won't change your amp's tone. PlimSoul has a gorgeous enhanced Midrange and Lower midrange... excellent to transform a combo into a Marshall-like lead machine, not so necessary if you already have a Marshall-like amp.

Good with Humbuckers as well as Single coils?
Yes.

Does it play nice with other pedals?
Yes, it has an Ideal 500K Input Impedance, ideal super low 10K output impedance.

Can I blend the 2 types of Distortion?
Yes, and you can have ONLY Soft clipped or ONLY Hard Clipped.

Review: Some compilations manage to both educate, inform and educate in equal measure; this fine collection from Japanese crate diggers DJ Yoshizawa Dynamite and Chintam is one such set. Comprising mostly little-known tracks recorded by Japanese artists between 1968 and '70, it offers up a wealth of cuts inspired by American jazz-funk "rare groove". There's much to admire across the ten tracks, from the mazy Rhodes solos, fizzing big band jazz grooves and traditional Eastern instrumentation of Toshiko Yonekawa's "Soran Bushi", and the languidly-slung brilliance of Tadaki Misago and Tokyo Cuban Boys' multi-faceted musical fusion "Jongara Reggae", to the Jimi Hendrix-goes-funk heaviness of "Incitation" by Monica Lassen & The Sounds, and the drums-driven dancefloor madness of Masahiko Sato Jiro Inagaki & Big Soul Media's "Sniper's Snooze". Recommended.

Fulltone Secret Freq Dynamic Asymmetrical Clipping Overdrive/Distortion Pedal
Notes: What's this, another touch-sensitive, dynamic, natural sounding overdrive/distortion to confuse the marketplace?

Nope, this is the Fulltone Secret Frequency. Secret Freq. for short. Although it does the gig-friendly clean boost and OD thing as good as any, it goes well past that when asked to, right into Rock territory while retaining a natural sound.

Dynamic asymmetrical clipping gives the Secret Freq. a sweet, musical clean boost, juicy overdrive, and rich, touch responsive high gain sounds. Not like the PlimSoul, nothing like the OCD, and not like any other pedal, but worth the price of admission were you to use it simply as is for your bread and butter OD/Distortion pedal.

But the 'Freq has WAY more tricks in its bag than your average transparent OD/Distortion... it just may knock a handful of OD/Distortions right off your 'board and straight on to Ebay thanks to another innocent looking knob labeled Freq.

What's this "Freq." knob?

Turn it Clockwise and my proprietary circuit adds as much as 20db of active narrow band juicy MIDRANGE right where it does the most good, it's like installing a wah-wah right where the distortion is being generated. But unlike turning on your wah-wah along with a distortion pedal, with the 'Freq. the bass and treble frequencies don't disappear... Very unique, and not to be confused with a simple active or passive midrange control tacked on to the end of the circuit, as is the case with all other pedals you've tried with a Mid control. Adding the 'Freq's midrange imparts WAY more sustain and lets you easily place the guitar in the mix where you want it, irrespective of volume... soundman's not going to bury you anymore.

What's it sound like?

Along with a slew of basic great OD/Distortion pedal sounds, it allows you to replicate a very, very wide range of your favorite guitar & amp sounds. Remember that when the 'Freq. knob is fully-counter-clockwise the Midrange enhancement effect is OUT of the picture and the pedal is a truly versatile and natural sounding pretty transparent OD/Distortion! At low to mid overdrive settings, turning the 'Freq knob up a little gets hammer-of-the-Gods penetrating PUNCH!

At more extreme (clockwise) Freq settings?

Brings a smile to your face an evokes the coolest Jimmy Page, Brian May, Michael Schenker, Robin Trower, Tom Scholz tones that you just couldn't previously get without a bunch of studio EQ, just the right setting on a great wah-wah, or a slew of British amps.

Fulltone 2B Clean Boost With Germanium Limiter Pedal Fulltone 2B Clean Boost With Germanium Limiter Pedal Fulltone 2B Clean Boost With Germanium Limiter Pedal Fulltone 2B Clean Boost With Germanium Limiter Pedal Fulltone 2B Clean Boost With Germanium Limiter Pedal
Notes: The Fulltone 2B is a tiny, transparent, and amazing boost pedal, born from the "Boost" channel in Fulltone's FD3 pedal.

Why does a guitarist need a "Boost" pedal?

A boost pedal is not only used to kick up your volume when it's time for your solo! A good booster can also solve a lot of problems in the modern guitarist's rig, because today's pedalboards average 8 or more pedals, with each of those pedals requiring: a guitar cable--->jack--->more wire--->footswitch--->circuit--->footswitch again--->jack--->more wire--> and on to next pedal. It's a wonder there's any signal left after all the stuff we put our signal through. Ever played through a 10' guitar cable straight into a great tube amplifier? The feel, the dynamics, the fat tone...makes you want to play! Then you connect to your overpopulated pedalboard and suddenly the sound is tiny, thin, with diminished lows, cardboard mids, and scratchy thin highs. This is where a good booster comes in handy, because all that wire and all those connections reduce your signal by a measurable amount with each passing effect in your signal chain. Add a good booster and you can recoup a lot of that lost gain, tone, and reactive interplay between you and your lovely tube amp. Suddenly the "touch" is back.

What happens when the 2B is turned OFF?

That's the problem with other boosters...once they're OFF, they cease to offer a high quality unity-gain buffer to drive the long cables, so you end up having to buy TWO boosters, one set to "unity gain" and the other set to do your Volume changes! A better solution is the 2B, its unity-gain JFET amp buffers your signal when the pedal is turned OFF...and when the 2B is turned ON; the only difference is now the GAIN knob comes into play allowing you to set the desired boost up to 20dB!

Why is the 2B a great booster?

The problem with other boosters is that the more you turn them up, the more highs they add. Not the case with the 2B, there is a subtle roll-off of the harsh ultra-high frequencies as you roll the LEVEL knob clockwise past 12 o'clock. It's subtle, you may not hear it, but you WON'T hear that shrill top end that other boosters can impart!

What's the DYNAMICS knob?

The 2B offers something completely unique in the world of Boost pedals; a DYNAMICS knob. A subtle Germanium diode Limiter circuit that (as you turn the mini-knob clockwise) starts to slightly alter the feel of the notes being played as well as subdue the harsh transient spikes which can overload your amp's input. Those spikes can be fatiguing to your ears, to the amp, and to its speakers! Similar to using a limiter on the mix down of a song in the studio, the 2B's DYNAMICS feature helps you keep your place in the live mix.....like a very smart compressor. This feature can make even an "ok" amp feel responsive and juicy, and will keep you from distorting the amp's input, a problem plaguing most booster pedals.

Specs:

Input Impedance: ultra-high 1.65mega ohms...Not a chance of any interaction issues with guitars or other effects
Output Impedance: ultra-low 300ohms..no chance of loading or interaction issues.
Max Gain: @ 20dB
Size: 4.5" x 2.1" x 2.3"
Weight= 12 ounces (with the included battery)

Review: The connection between Madchester icons The Stone Roses, electronic music and club culture has been over-documented, but if anyone still had any doubts as to the links, this remixes album offers plenty of evidence. With added beats, samples and various other pieces, the remains of the original songs that are here sound as though they were made for dancefloors and afters.

The names responsible for breathing new, or at least different life into these tracks represent an entirely fitting crop of producers considering the era the Roses broke through in. Decade-spanning drum 'n' bass, acid house and trance faces are out in force; Paul Oakenfold, Grooverider, Jon Carter, 808 State and A Guy Called Gerald are among those who have been drafted, which should tell you all there is to know really.

Review: French DJ-turned-remixer Young Pulse's popular "Paris Edits" series notches up seven volumes, this time via a three-tracker packed to the rafters with heavyweight disco-funk grooves. Arguably the best of a very strong bunch is "Bobo's Reason", a reverb and delay-laden, slightly beefed-up rearrangement of an excitable, horn-heavy disco-soul tune from the Philadelphia school of orchestrated dancefloor fun. There is of course plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere across the EP though, with the spacey, synth-laden, percussion-rich disco-boogie of "Beggar's Run" being joined on side two by the high-octane disco-funk weight of "Bisso's Love".

  1. I'm In Love Dancin'

Review: Given the respective reputations of Chicago scene stalwarts DJ Emanuel and Rahaan, you'd expect these collaborative "Remixes From The Dungeon" to be pretty damn good. They are, of course, with the Windy City veterans making merry with a pair of sweaty, leftfield NYC disco classics. As the title suggests, A-side "I'm Love Dancing" sees the duo rearrange Dinosaur's "Is It All Over My Place", smartly emphasizing the track's odder elements, including those drunken horns and spiralling solos, while also giving the bustling groove plenty of time to get hips and feet moving. Flipside "Imma Freak" is even more eccentric, with Emanuel and Rahaan eking every last drop of party-starting madness from a cacophonous, dancefloor-slaying disco oddity.

Review: Limited white vinyl repress.DJ Soopasoul's last mash-up was an inspired affair that saw him perfectly fuse tracks by Philadelphia Soul legends MFSB and the Beastie Boys. Here he takes a similar approach, placing the rap vocals from the 1995 hip hop classic "How High" atop a suitably funky, lolloping beat crafted from Clavinet-heavy sections from Stevie party-starting floor-heater "Superstition". It works remarkably well on the A-side vocal mix, and those who'd not heard either track would be convinced that there was no mash-up antics going on. Over on side B you'll find an instrumental mix that showcases Soopasoul's editing skills; minus the Hip Hop vocals, is a fine re-edit of the Wonderful jam.
