Soul
  1. Footsteps In The Dark (Parts 1 & 2) (5:04)
  2. Between The Sheets (4:53)
Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** Immortalised, slowed down funk from The Isley Brothers, an American R&B/soul group from Cincinnati, Ohio, established in the early 1950s. This 7" houses the much loved and often sampled in the hip hop world, "Footsteps In The Dark" (Parts 1 & 2) and "Between The Sheets". The latter is a silky smooth R&B classic whilst the arguably more well-known "Footsteps In The Dark" is an arrestingly beautiful, hood classic/soul masterpiece. The bassy but laid-back harmonious ballad with delicious percussion and Ronald Isley crooning an uneasy lyric on maintaining "a love that lasted for so long" amid the constant temptation of infidelity, makes it worth the entry price on its own.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz
  1. Tell Me (feat Tyson) (4:08)
  2. Healer (3:42)
Review: Last time we heard from London's Lord Tusk, he was joining the dots between deep house and dub via a fine 2018 EP on MIC. Seven-inch single "Tell Me" is an altogether different beast, with the A-side title track offering a spacey, guitar-laden trip into lo-fi rock/intergalactic synth-pop fusion featuring the woozy vocal talents of sometime Unklejam member Tyson. Turn to the flip for "Healer", a gloriously reverb-heavy trip into late night Fleetwood Mac/AOR guitars, skittish drums, tipsy lead vocals and all manner of starburst dub effects.

Dub
  1. Jet Ski
  2. Lavender In The Night
  3. Sweet Genius
  4. Shit To Buy
Review: As Galcher Lustwerk's label continues to expand at an easy pace, so this intriguing prospect arises from the lesser known Double Pelican Man. As The Nassau Sessions title might imply, this is a departure from sleek house and techno into an abstraction of the island boogie sound, taking some cues from digi-dub and 80s dancehall but offsetting it with a final mix that is all its own. "Jet Ski" is a perfect slice of canned dub for mellow heads, and "Sweet Genius" is the pick for a more audacious application of delay and reverb, but the bass on "Shit To Buy" makes it the standout track on this collection of dubwise jams.

  1. Slide (3:56)
  2. Ride (feat Brian Jackson) (4:31)
Review: New York City-based trio Escort are back for the first time since their Animal Nature LP from 2015. Their new track "Slide" was co-written with NYC soul artist Denitia and drives you gently with this west coast influenced roller produced by Eugene Cho and Jkriv - and featuring Adeline's wonderful vocal delivery. We absolutely adored this slick and low slung boogie-down number. For something more uplifting (and with dancefloor dynamics) you can try the classic '70s disco explosion of "Ride" (feat Brian Jackson) on the flip, which calls to mind the classic vibe of masters like Salsoul, Moulton Studios et al.

  1. Bra (5:06)
  2. The Message (4:14)
Review: Mr Bongo recently served up a tasty 7" single featuring two of Cymande's best-loved tracks, "Fug" and "Brothers on the Slide". Here they repeat the trick, slapping the two most-played tracks from the British band's incredible 1972 debut album, Cymande, on one "45". The A-side boasts "Bra", a killer chunk of funk/soul/reggae fusion with one of the most recognizable grooves around. Hip-hop heads will know it inside out, since DJs have been doubling up with copies of "Bra" since the mid 1970s. On the flip you'll find "The Message", a sublime, slightly more spaced out reggae-funk workout rich in snaking sax lines, memorable vocals and a groove so distinctive it couldn't come from any other band.

Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. For The Love Of Money (4:05)
  2. For The Love Of Money (disco dub) (4:14)
Review: Disco Dub Band's "For The Love of Money", a one-off collaboration between producer Davitt Sigerson and reggae musician Mike Dorane, has long been considered something of a classic by those who like their disco to come with a big dose of dub-wise flavour. Here the instrumental O'Jays cover, which originally appeared on the Movers label in 1976, is given the remix treatment by long-time fans Mr Bongo. The superb A-side, in which Dorane's instrumental talents take centre stage, naturally comes accompanied by the frequently played Dub interpretation, a typically wild and bass-heavy affair that sounds like it was mixed "live" in one take in true Lee Perry/King Tubby style. If it's not already in your collection, it should be.

  1. Get Your Own (3:47)
  2. J Zimbra (4:09)
Review: Those who remember the first wave of funk breaks mash-ups and floor-filling hip-hop cut-ups in the late 1990s should be aware of J-Large; the mysterious DJ/producer has been remixing and reworking tracks (most notably by the Herbaliser) on and off ever since. His latest 7" escapade is suitably sizable, with A-side "Get Your Own" fusing Christina Aguilera's best-known vocal with loops and grooves lifted from a certain horn-toting jazz disco-funk classic. On the flip you'll find "J Zimbra", a bustling and floor-friendly tool-up of heavyweight Afro-funk slammer from 1979. As you'd expect, both are guaranteed to get the party started... and then some.

  1. Stax Dawg (2:13)
  2. Love Book (2:33)
  3. Funky Jive (3:03)
Review: A welcome return to action for Stank Soul scalpel fiends Mako and Mr Bristow, whose last collaborative re-edit release dropped back in 2017. This time round they offer up a slimmed down seven-inch selection boasting two hot-to-trot revisions. On the A-side you'll find "Stax Dawg", a loving tribute to the legendary US label that sees the pair wrap 1960s horns, vocals and instrumentation around their own rubbery, floor-friendly groove. "Love Book", meanwhile, is arguably even better: a low-down revision of a horn-heavy funk-rock affair rich in addictive guitar riffs, bustling drums, heavy horns and gravelly blues style vocals. They round things off via flipside "Funky Jive", a tooled-up version of rhythm and blues standard "Willie and the Hand Jive" that should have everyone singing along in the club.

  1. Hagefest (5:41)
  2. Hagefest (version) (5:34)
Review: Norwegian music has long tended towards the eccentric, though we can't think of many quirkier releases than Leoparden's recent album "Stilen Er Stimmvel" - a decidedly off-kilter set that mixes lo-fi synth-boogie, reggae, African rhythms, P-funk, blue-eyed soul and lashings of Scandolearic vibes. This tidy 7" single offers up a taster of that set in the shape of album highlight "Hagefest", a decidedly spaced-out afro-reggae affair rich in reverb laden vocals, clipped guitars and off-kilter drums. Leoparden brilliantly strips things back on the flipside "Version", which layers dubbed-out snippets of vocal, guitar and synth over a beefed up version of the eccentric rhythm track.

  1. Rain (Danny Krivit 7" edit) (5:19)
  2. Rain (Atjazz remix - Danny Krivit 7" edit) (5:32)
Review: There are a lot of much-loved Kerri Chandler records, but it would be fair to say that 1998's "Rain" - originally tucked away on the flipside of "The Mood EP" - is one of the most celebrated. Here it gets given the re-edit treatment by arguably the world's most celebrated editor, Danny Krivit. The veteran New Yorker gets busy with the original version on the A-side, focusing on the soulful, improvised vocals, tasty minor key melodies, skipping drums and warm, rich synth bassline. Over on the flip, Krivit turns his attention to Atjazz's later remix, which re-imagines the track as a breezy chunk of Latin house rich in live pianos, bossa-driven beats, hissing cymbals and some choice vocal snippets.

  1. Good Edits (part 1) (4:34)
  2. Good Edits (part 2) (4:08)
Review: More from top-drawer rework merchant DJ Soopasoul, whose cheeky revisions on his Soopastole label are consistently on point and dancefloor-focused. For his latest trick, the long-serving DJ/producer has decided to apply his magic to one of the greatest disco records of all time and a "foundation record" of the hip-hop scene: Chic classic "Good Times". The A-side edit sounds like it has been created using the multi-track parts, as dubbed-out vocal sections ride stripped-back grooves and portions that variously showcase the track's original strings, Nile Rodgers' guitars and Bernard Edwards' killer bassline. The flipside "Part 2" version is similarly minded but more like a disco dub in feel and execution, with the maestro drenching vocal sections in delicious amounts of delay.

New vinyl imprint Dynamite releases a quality limited edition double pack release showcasing the highlights from that album plus some additional rare versions of the tracks. The version of 'Sweet Power Your Embrace'' is taken from the incredibly rare 7 inch promo only issue. On the flipside is a different version of the club floor dancer ''Free'' which features a heavy bongo workout . The 45 second slab on this package features two tracks featuring the vocals from Clarice Taylor on ' I've Got My Eyes On You'' and the superb 'Slick City' which were both never commercially released as a 45 before.
