Dark Entries are back with more of that sweet, sweet goth sauce in the shape of Topographies. The San Francisco band have been building up a following for their faithful tribute to sad-eyed synth-pop and new wave from the early 80s, releasing an album in 2020 on Funeral Party as well as a single for Sonic Cathedral. It's not hard to pick out the influences, and it all makes sense when you learn Gray Tolhurst is the son of The Cure's Laurence Tolhurst. They're not simply aping another band's sound though and if you can't get enough of that quintessential goth rock sound, you're going to love this record.

Review: The Libertines is a rather divisive band but we are firmly in the fan camp. It's great to have the pari of Carl Barat and Pete Doherty back working together as older, wiser men, but happily their music has lost none of the urgency it had when they were drug loving youths. They defined a specific period in UK music culture back at the turn of the millennium and are now back for more with All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade, which according to frontman Pete Doherty happened "in a moment of rare peace". Lead single 'Run Run Run' has already performed well brings both lots of raw riffs, raucous energy and some of the superb songwriting they were famous for first time around.

Review: A reissue of 2022's covers single, Alvarius B's 'Karaoke' gets a second run via Unrock. A titan of the US underground singer-songwriter scene, Alan Bishop is best known as a co-founder of Sun City Girls and owner of the labels Abduction and Sublime Frequencies. His less-known alias Alvarius B has nonetheless seen an extended panhandle of releases at least since 1994, and plays host to a string of 'characters' and sub-pseudonyms. One such 'charakter', as he calls them, is Karaoke, whose forte is covers of noir cinematic rock classics. Here we've got two dark rundowns; on the A, a dark rundown of Ennie Morricone's 'Solo Nostalgia' from the film Comandamenti per un Gangster, and on the B, a version of Indonesia's finest Koes Plus' 'Tiba-Tiba Ku Menangis', whom Bishop had already interpreted as part of the band Koes Barat. Both detail Bishop's talent as a rarely-performed alter-ego, a cosmopolite solo-entertainer.

The original comes from German duo and new wave innovators Die Radierer whose pop-reggae jam 'Batman' is irresistibly catchy with its low-slung beats and lazy, sun-kissed melodies. It appeared on 1983's In Hollywood and was recorded at their home studio on a Tascam 4-track cassette recorder. Gary The Tall's remix finds him teaming up with Aaron Coyles under his new alias of Exotic Gardens and the results are loopy and dubbed out to perfection.

Review: 'I'm Totally Fine With It Don't Give A Fuck Anymore' reads the WhatsApp message on the front cover of the upcoming album of the same name by Scottish duo Arab Strap. Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton have been on a blazing nonstop run ever since they reunited the group in 2019. Confronting conspiracy theories, online addiction, and societal decay, the lead single 'Bliss' is a steady reminder of Arab Strap's multi-generational appeal - "It's about women being terrorized online; it's about cowardice and bigotry. It's about how we expose ourselves on social platforms while hiding alone at home. But you can dance to it too!" Moffat said on the press release. As the haunting melodies intertwine with Moffat's gritty regional vocals on the 15-track album, dimly lit dive bars and sketchy alleyways come to mind and not the cyberspace dystopia that many other musicians would go to. It's a unique take on a subject that needs unique takes, an explicit piece of sang prose in an age of censorship. Just the cover alone lets you know that Arab Strap is not going to be added to your easy-listening playlist. The icing on the cake? The cheeky decision to make the disc a bright emoji yellow.

Review: Glasgow indie pop sonic-photographers Camera Obscura have always been masters of subtlety and this sense of finesse only hears a bolstering on the new record Look To The East, Look To The West. After the sad loss of their former founding member and keyboardist Carey Lander in 2015, the group took the time out for a much-needed hiatus before reuniting for the recording of this personally redemptive full-length. Led by the soft, tambouring jangles of 'Big Love', the album's lead single, we're met with an elegiac but ultimately hopeful recollection, via its lovingly prodding lyrics ("it was a big love, she said, the kind of big love that made you easily led") and sonic resemblance of Waylon Jennings.

Review: "Herd immunity" was certainly a phrase banded about during the pandemic, and we all know what it means, but what about if / when the phrase is taken figuratively? Cathy Lucas, Susumu Mukai, Elliott Arndt, Phil MFU and Valentina Magaletti make up the quintet that is Vanishing Twin, whose latest album The Age Of Immunology metaphorically attempts to answer this question. Today's tribulations, often of humanity's own doing, nonetheless require of us that we adapt, regardless of any long-term psychic damage this causes; whether one finds any sense of poetry in the literal reflection of this in the doling out of vaccines en masse remains to be decided by you, the listener. Psychopolitical ramblings aside, The Age Of Immunology follows up the band's yetmost experimental album Magic And Machines, and hears them emerge from the other side through dreamy post-punk cinematics ('KRK'), wahhing, whirling instrumental disco-kraut ('Cryonic Suspension May Save Your Life'), and boinging, 'Ashes To Ashes' style summer psych balladry ('Magician's Success'). All ironically work as temporary salves for the soul, reflecting a surreal fantasy space that almost certianly works to simultaneously reflect and deflect the era we find ourselves in now.

The band's latest incarnation as Lottie Pendlebury, Holly Mullineaux, and Rosy Jones hear them joined by modern indie production favourite John Spud Murphy for a darker, more slow-brooding foray into their hircine sound than ever before. Mainly recorded and produced at Hellfire Studios in the on-side shadow of the infamous Irish nightclub Hellfire, Below The Waste is an apt exploration of the group's underbelly to match, exploring an increased sense of "resolution, honesty and authenticity" in relationships, with lead singer Lottie Pendlebury letting on that this was an album on which they'd gone 'below the surface' where the most interesting parts of ourselves tend to be suppressed.

Review: Everyone remembers the saying about slow-boiled frogs, but what actually happens when you attempt to boil one in real life? Surprise, surprise, modern science counters the aphoristic claim with a charge of falsehood; that real-life frogs do indeed tend to jump out of boiling water regardless of the time it takes to boil one. New York slowcore and shoegaze favourite DIIV's latest album Frog In Boiling Water seems to recall this mood as much, propelling us into action with the femural puissance of an amphibian's hunkers, despite the album's consistent plodding, its dourness, its steadiness, its slow boil. Naturally, in light of the boiled frog analogy's usual connotations, the album is nominally about the contradictions of late stage capitalism and overwhelming technological advance, with its sound evoking the feeling of bowling into a non-risk-assessed future, and the bittersweet sense of bliss and personal confrontation this evokes at every turn.

Review: The ongoing success of the musical showcasing his work, the terrific (and very Sheffield-centric) Standing At The Sky's Edge, has done much to remind listeners of Richard Hawley's qualities as a songwriter. He's genuinely one of Britain's best of the last few decades, though the varied ways in which those are presented has not always gone down well with listeners. On In This City They Call You Love - another reference to beloved Sheffield - Hawley returns to the smooth, string-laden sound which marked out his most commercially successful album, Coles Corner. His voice - deep, rich and at this point bordering iconic - naturally takes centre stage on a set packed with touching and thoughtful ballads. It's a winner, but then the majority of his albums are.

Review: The second album by British alt-rockers the Mysterines, Afraid of Tomorrows, is the sophomore grunge outing by the Merseyside band, formed of Lia Metcalfe, George Favager, Callum Thompson and Paul Crilly. Inspired in part by the legendary New York music and arts scene documentary film Meet Me In The Bathroom - in which legendary performances by the likes of LCD Soundsystem, The Strokes, Interpol and Yeah Yeah Yeahs feature - Afraid of Tomorrows is edgy and cuspy to match, thematically reflecting on the changing face of music and the structures that house its promotion in the modern day. Review: Perhaps snatching the crown for best North of England band name since English Teacher, Bored At My Grandmas House (the singer-songwriter project of Leeds-based musician Amber Strawbridge) presents a fresh new album, Show, Don't Tell, following the titular mantra to an absolute T, across a beautifully recorded 12-track indie album that indeed poses more questions than it answers (in a great way). With its subject matters candid (earning trust, social reticence, general early-twenties angst) and its song structures bite-sized, the overarching style is Bedroom Pop with capital Bs and Ps, blowing the rest of the competition out of the bunkbed studio with its simple chorus treatments, hypnotic guitar riffs and deft instrumental contributions from bassist and producer Alex Greaves and drummer Niall Summerton.

Review: Back in 2019, Emotional Rescue began a series where it licensed some all-time favourites, remastered them and pressed them up with new remixes by modern producers. It now draws to a close after many fine instalments with early 80s band The Impossible Dreamers. Their cult 'Spin' arrives here with an epic nine-minute extended reversion that is heavy on the dub and percussion and also an even more dubcentric reprise from regular label artist Dan Tyler of Idjut Boys and Noid fame, her under his NAD guise. There is plenty of raw and raucous rhythm to this 12" that will enliven any dancefloor and round out this series in style.

Review: It's been a full five years since Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds released an original full-length LP. Their last was Ghosteen, the final of three albums to complete the triptych that also included Push The Sky Away (2013) and Skeleton Tree (2016). This makes Wild God something of a special one, marking the first time Cave and company have struck out on an isolable creative limb in over a decade. Unlike the heartfelt grief-stricken groundswells of the previous three albums, Wild God is an avowed 'deeply and joyously infectious' album that marks a return to Cave's reputable, searching, soul-stirring songwriting form; full of the same idiosyncrasies that formed the greatness of latter-day albums like Dig, Lazarus, Dig, albeit with a crazed edge that has perhaps never been heard before.

Review: Nick Cave & The Bad seeds present their first album in five years, Wild God, following 2019's Ghosteen. A testament to the band's recent spell of happiness, the stylistic and emotional complexity of Wild God is reflective of the complex emotional state a songwriter can find themselves in after a period of pain and tumult. It is indeed a "complicated record" (Cave's own words), with every cameo from David Fridmann to Jonny Greenwood in tow, conjuring up gothic romantic fantasies ("he flew through the city like a prehistoric bird" and "she died in a bedsit in 1993") and candidly heartfelt instrumentation, but with a kooky edge. Though the singles released so far err on the side of convention, our inside intel indicates the presence of an overall rock-genre-bending record elsewhere, owing to a happy period of reconnection and creative synergy experienced by the band.

Review: Strand of Oaks' upcoming album Miracle Focus signals a departure from Tim Showalter's usual folk-rock sound, embracing meditation and a diverse range of influences. Showalter's transformative journey is reflected in the album's eclectic mix, drawing inspiration from Ram Dass, yoga, Freddie Mercury, Alice Coltrane and the Beastie Boys. Produced by Kevin Ratterman, the album features backing vocals from Lacey Guthrie and features Showalter's newfound love for synthesisers and painting. The lead single 'More You' abandons guitars for swirling ambient synths, signaling a bold evolution in Showalter's sonic palette. Review: Drop Nineteens' album Delaware captures the essence of the shoegaze movement with its fuzzy guitars, serene harmonies, and dissonant melodies. While the band's sound draws comparisons to My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive, their lack of mainstream success can be attributed to the rise of grunge and bands like Smashing Pumpkins in the early 90s. The album has many moments of brilliance, such as the sprawling noise of 'Kick the Tragedy' and the catchy melodies of 'Madonna' and 'Happen.' However, some tracks fall flat with generic riffs and uninspired songwriting. Delaware includes strong vocal performances by Greg Ackell and Paula Kelley, particularly on tracks like 'Reberrymemberer.' Overall, Delaware is a very worthwhile listen for fans of the shoegaze movement or late 80s alternative/indie music.
