Review: A repress here of 2019's under the radar 'Box EP by The enigmatic British producer JS Zeiter, who executed more greyscale dub techno excursions of a typically high caliber on this one. After some spookily sensual ASMR action on intro 'The Code' he continues to build the suspense on the beatless Subarctic Soundscape of 'Darkness Falls' before dropping the power on the cavernous and glacial beats of 'On The Moor'. Flip over and take on more of the frozen seascape on the deeply hypnotic groove of "Empty" before one more emotional ambient outro in the form of 'Endgame'.

Review: Soul Brother Records' Record Store Day 2020 release offers up re-mastered versions of two hard-to-find early 'disco mixes' of modern soul-era gems. On the A-side you'll find Tom Moulton's scarce, five-minute club version of soul man Bobby Moore's '(Call Me Your) Anything Man', a delightfully orchestrated and super-sweet dancefloor workout built around a Latin-tinged groove reminiscent of Grace Jones' 'La Vie En Rose', which of course Moulton later famously remixed. Over on the flip there's a chance to savour West End Records' boss Mel Cheren's wonderfully over-the-top dancefloor extension of obscure vocal group Sweet Music's soaring cover of K.C & The Sunshine Band favourite 'I Get Lifted'. It's very different to their much-loved take, but every bit as essential.

Review: Japan's Thinner Groove flesh out their distinctive aesthetic with every new release. This time around, they welcome none other than Lemmi Ash, KOOLMFL and Sonic Weapon for a collaborative three-track EP of lowercase minimal tech and textural vignettes. The aim of the game is best encapsulated in the label's commentary: "each track can add a distinctive touch to the night, as like completing your cocktail with lemon and/or lime". Each track indeed sounds to the ear akin to how a fruity garnish tastes, with Ash's 'Presence' bringing tart citrine breaks notes to a gracefully held glass vessel. KOOLMFL's 'Atonbow' is drier bitters, barely availing itself of its trembling chords and sampled vox after an ultra-snappy initiation featuring a mere bass and kick-clap. Thinner Groove know all too well that good music is like an excitation of the flavour palate, and that minimality is the thing that lets such flavours sit.

Review: It's been a minute since we last heard from Dyed Soundorom but now the Parisian minimal tech house mainstay is back with a new two-tracker. It's a swift reminder of why he's spent so long at the top of the game both solo and in Apollonia, full of the subtle charm and mystique found in the best of the genre. 'Trantrax' slips into a seriously reduced hypnosis, threading minuscule flecks of melody into a mix defined by the creepy three note bassline. On the flip, 'Conxandinote' keeps things reliably creepy with hints of icy pad and another b-line that roundly defines the overall atmosphere of the track in chilling, captivating style.

Review: Under the border umbrella of the Yoyaku crew, Kord El makes a strong debut appearance with this first EP on Superbanger. The vibe on the record is instantly detectable as balmy, trippy tech house which stays on the subtle side of the trance spectrum and lets the groove take centre stage. 'Kryptonight' is a swirling, hazy mind warp peppered with samples and hypnotic chimes, anchored by the warmest of basslines. 'Grammy' is a slightly techier, dubbier affair for when the party's fired up a notch, and 'Stereo Solitude' plays around with breaks in a delicate fashion for maximum rolling effect. 'Phantone Zone' slips a little 303 into the soup, and makes it sound wholly natural in another prime slice of contemporary wigged-out house.

Review: The third edition in the mysterious Suoni Incisi series is another exercise in slo-motion tribal trance that would make even the master Donato Dozzy sit up and notice. The A-side cut is sublime ambient techno awash in layers of intricately woven textures, led by a gently bouncing arpeggio. Over on the flip, the second offering takes a more abstract turn with an emphasis on the hypnotic polyrhythms that underpin its overall ritualistic and psychedelic arrangement - altogether geared for pure enlightenment. Review: Suoni Incisi is very ably marking itself out as a new school leader in tribal, trance-tinged new age and mind-melting deep techno of the sort that Need and Voices From the Lake have mastered before now. The eponymous artists steps up again here with two more long-form cuts - the first being an undulating, rubbery cut with heady flutes and super-deep bass rotations that sink you into a mindful state immediately. 'Track 2' is no more hurried and again takes a slow-burning approach with languid synths and liquid details peeling off the linear but loose drums. What an EP.

Review: DATA17 is back with more of that irresistible hand-stamped white label minimal and tech house goodness. 'Pour Toi' kick off this particular party with high speed tech funk loops and crashing hits that demand you dance while wonky synth lines unfold up top. The clipped and kinetic funk continues on 'C La Vie' which has distant playground found sounds and balmy pads and 'Sous Influence' that slips down into superbly icy and economical minimal grooves, with nagging leads hooking you in as the militant drums march below. It's an eerie and futuristic sounds completed with some spoken words from Blade Runner.

Review: The fledgling Pamela label hits release number three with Anthony Teasdale the man charged with taking us on a sonic trip. He kicks off with a gorgeous cut that pairs breezy grooves with flamboyant keys that sound like they come from a theatrical moment in a play. It is a super symphony that sweeps you off your feet while 'A Pavement In Palma' is a humid and sundown gem, 'Deep In The Forest Something Stared' is layered ups with retro-future synths from a band like ELO and 'It's 5am Somewhere' then has more slick kick to it, but no less a majestic sense of melody which seems to be Teaseale's calling card.

Review: Tooney Lunes are back with more of their characterful underground cuts, this time from Looney Tunes's Marvin the Martian, an alien race character who brings the occult funk to these grooves. 'Track 1' is all slapping drum funk and crisp hits, then 'Track 2' spins out on molten acid gurgles and another snappy tech house groove. 'Track 3' is a brilliant mix of classic r&b samples with a chugging bassline and splashy electro-tech drums. Last of all is 'Track 4,' another begging mix of r&b vocals and dark garage tech, the squelchy acid lines appearing once more to make for something both soulful yet edgy.

Review: Returning after a four year hiatus from production, Glaswegian producer Jasper James presents the next release for Lovefingers' ESP Institute. As stated on the cover, James 'fights for what he wants to be cuz function is the key. These two songs will ping your pong and pong your ping'. On the A side you have the playful and swing-fuelled stomper '0141' that's certainly geared for the peak of the evening ,followed over on the flip with the heady minimal funk of 'E-Maniac'.

Review: The Florence label actually started a decade ago back in 2023 and it has not rushed things in that time, so only now is it making its way to a 15th outing - although it also now has a 7" funk off-shoot. This one is another cultured deep house sound that recalls the work of Hamburg's Smallville crew. It comes for the in house production outfit and is cuddly and deep to start with, then disco laced and utterly feel good on 'Bphect' and dark and more tech edge on the trippy 'Cphect'. Last of all is the curiously hard to define but swaggering deep house of 'Dphect' which we think samples... Cliff? Four beguiling tunes.

Review: 0 is back on their own 0 label with 02, a second offering of experimental electronic music. Both sides of this 12" are taken up by one long and winding track each. The first is all dubbed out, with gassy sounds bringing a little light and sharpness to the murky pads, grainy effects and lo-fi aesthetic all around. It's a heady back room cut for in-the-know crowds at 5AM. The flip side is a little fuller, with skittish rhythms, busted sine waves and watery synths all coalescing around a haunting groove that is awash with real-world noise.

Review: One of the only positives to come from the difficult last year and all the various lockdowns is the music that has been made. A case in point is this project from Tactil, a new project from Madrid artists Kawn and F-on. They are responsible for the fourth Antimatter release, which is heavily inspired by deep dub technicians from the 90s like Gas and Porter Ricks. The four tunes are hugely immersive, widescreen and atmospheric and has subtly evolving rhythms, modulated synth details and an eerie mood thanks to the various delays, reverbs and LFO modulations strung out in each tune.

The San Antonio born artist offers up a sizzling six track mini album that joins the dots between the worlds of funk, house, acid, breaks, disco and boogie. Review: Ix3m and Denis Andreev made impressive debuts on their 123.ro label last year, and now they're back for volume three as they head deeper into their experimental minimal techno practice. There are steadfast grooves guiding the action on ix3m's A-side cut 'Perfesona', but the emphasis is more on evocative sound design which takes on a three-dimensional quality as it shifts and contorts around the hyper-minimal beat. On the flip, ix3m and Andrew's collaborative track 'Satanic' weaves a subtle invocation in the direction of the dark side, putting an unsettling, whispered female voice in the middle of the mix and creating something clandestine in the process.

Review: If you have had your ear to the Balearic underground over the summer you might well have heard some high-profile selectors dropping cuts off this latest missive from US label Just What The World Needs. It is another sublime three-tracker that kicks off with the string-laced and upbeat disco delights of the A1. Second up is a much more slow and sensuous sound that sinks you in deep to a beach lounger as the sun fades into the sea and the sky turns flame red and orange. Things pick up again with the third and final cut - a percussive jumble of organic hits and drums overlaid with a heart-melting vocal sample and deft melodic details that drift by like wispy clouds.

Review: Just What The World Needs returns to their own self-titled label with a 14th outing of fiery disco heat. This is potent music that melds together jazz, funk and soul with a lashing of synth goodness. The opener is a real driver with emotive gospel vocals and mad jazz keys. Second is a slower jam with a more dreamy feel then the flip side comes on strong with jazz say leading the way beneath vaping chords and funky, smooth drums. Last of all is a supercharged leftfield bomb with explosive cosmic synths and the sort of energy that stands out in any set.

Review: Big up to Kemet Music for hitting the not-so-insignificant milestone of a 40th EP. As ever, the music is of the highest quality with Sneak taking charge of this fierce four-track 12". 'Kill Sound' has strong ragga vibes with lasers shooting over the face of a classic dusty amen break while mad drum fills flit about the mix. 'Ashes To Ashes' is a lively one with snappy snare rolls and the sort of breaks that will blow up and floor, then 'Good Lord' brings a playful vibe with gun fingers a plenty and a dubby bottom end. Bonus Beat 'The Meantime' is a chaotic collision of sound to close.

Review: When Gregory Porter first released "1960 What?" back in 2012, he'd yet to become the soul superstar we know and love today. The single was released in limited numbers first time round and, thanks to his elevation to star status, has become an in-demand collector's item - hence this timely reissue. It's every bit as classic-sounding as the majority of Porter's work, with the main man providing an impassioned delivery of conscious lyrics over a wonderful soul-jazz backing track. Review: Open Channel For Dreamers have been exploring the old DAT archives of Ballet Mechanique and found a wealth of never before released material that dates back to the 90s. This is a third release of such treasures and it focusses on tunes from 1992-1999. It follows in the footsteps fo the first two EPs by highlighting the diversity and variety of sounds in Jeroen's production arsenal. There are rave bangers on the a-side filled with uplifting melodies and on the flip is IDM and electro fuelled by funk. Another superb EP for fans old and new.

What better way to mark the commencement of its third decade, then, than with some new music? 20 Years Of Phonica: Sampler 3 pulls together artists from the electronic vanguard, starting with Paramida & E-Talking's 'Read My Lips' which is an acid-laced 90s techno revival. Dauwd's 'Slam' is stripped back and pulses with acid and Daniel Avery's 'Bell' is languid, melodic and gorgeously serene techno. Review: London wax institution Phonica continue to celebrate their 20th anniversary as a label in deep-digging, highly eclectic style. This fourth sampler continues to hint at a much larger VA album with a wide range of sounds across the techno/jungle axis. Tim Reaper & Comfort Zone get us in the groove with the savage drum funk of 'Subterranean' while Toby Tobias eases down the tempo and takes us to some mystical places on the Balearic-on-Mars funk of 'On My Mind'. Meanwhile on the flip Shy One goes full-on Co-Op / Bugz vibes with its sparse broken beat jazziness while Orphic's Kieran Jandu closes the EP on a bumping early 90s-inspired techno roll-out. Review: There is a niche scene out there right now where spaced-out breaks, deep house, prog, original tech house and trance are all getting distilled and reworked into compelling new sounds. This EP is a perfect example of that from Enzo Leep. It is bouncy but with real weight, colourful but serious and always nice and deep. '"2000's Dreams' is the balmy opener then there is more turbulence and twisted energy to 'Nasty'. 'El Aquelarre' is a super cool pumper with bobbling bass and wispy sci-fi synths then 'Timeless' shuts down with astral star gazing and screwy bass funk.

Review: The album 1982 stands out as one of the finest moments in A Certain Ratio's story. When you're talking about a band that started half a decade before the year 1982, that's saying something. Following on from the landmark ACR Loco, the outfit's 2023 record is packed with multidimensionality - dipping toes into everything from gritty post punk (a sound from whence they first came) to Afrobeat, all realised with exceptional attention to detail and the highest possible standards. 2023 EP, as the title suggests, builds on the impact of that latest long-from release. Opening on the jazzy late night club workout 'Day By Day', a brand new number, the package then jumps into work from the aforementioned LP, redone by contemporary dons. So that's Werkha on a stepping, garage-hued version of 'SAMO', Emperor Machine emphasising the exotic disco grooves of 'Constant Curve', and Jade Parker offering a highly percussive cosmic take on 'Waiting On A Train'.
