Lionel Pillay - "Plum" (Luke Una edit) (12:51)
Review: 18 months after a fantastic launch instalment courtesy of the mighty Danny Krivit, Mr Bongo's Edits series returns. This time round, it's Manchester legend and 'E Soul Cultura' specialist Luke Una at the controls. On the A-side he handles 'Love Games', an obscure slice of mid-80s South African disco by Thandi Zulu and The Young Five, cannily focusing on the warm, gently funky groove and the track's spacey synth solos. Over on the flip, the Electric Chair co-founder takes on Lionel Pillay's percussion, synth-and-organ classic 'Plum', stretching out the most dancefloor friendly sections before unleashing waves of solos and the original's saucer-eyed, sun-splashed instrumentation.

Review: Elevated Senses is the new series from the prolific Berlin-based producer Todo Kunst aka Zug (aka Gruvaldo among many others), this time exploring such concepts with the third eye, premonitions, telepathy and other arcane subjects. On the A-side you've got the deep groove of 'Tercer Ojo' followed by the late night affair of 'Premonition' - both on a housey tip. Over on the flip is the subtle computer funk 'Telepatia' and finally 'Seres De Luz' is a contemplative IDM affair that's perfect for drifting beyond the afterhours.

Review: Winthorpe Electronics signs up Dublin musician and producer Daniel Jacobson aka ZOiD for his debut on the label. What a fine one it is too with a real creative freedom in the melodies and rich sense design bringing each of these curveball cuts to life. '2-Oh-Techno' is a loose mix of bumpy drums and smeared chords, zippy leads and pixelated melodies that shine bright. 'Winthrope Acrid 2C (2-5s On The 303)' is then a double-time and wonky workout with a collage of synth textures all intertwining. 'Sunrise Acid' is another unusual but effective techno cut with a happy heart and 'Megajazz Acidhops' is a final collision of synths and rhythms that leaves you wanting more.

Review: Dutch acid techno collective Zodiak Commune has been bringing the heat to the Netherlands club scene for over two decades now, adding fuel to the fire with their latest EP release '303 Fifth Pattern'. Released as both a ten-track digital compilation and a four-track EP series, it comes as a raucous addition to their oeuvre, each track describing a hallucino-hellish factory floor. Fragments of melody show up on 'Radiance' and 'Acid Factory', but they come second to the emphasis on giant steely atmospherics. It makes sense, because the Zodiak crew has been performing for years, hosting massive techno raves in any space they can get their hands on.

Bubbling (7:09)
Review: Since making his debut six years ago, Seb Zito has made quite an impression. Here, he christens new label Seven Dials following acclaimed outings on Fuse London, Rawax and, most recently, Hund Records. As the title suggests, much of the EP is inspired by dancefloor styles of the 1990s, though thankfully not the extensively mined hardcore and jungle sounds that have inspired rather a lot of producers of late. "95-96" is a swinging and bass-heavy affair, seemingly inspired by the darker end of U.S garage (think Tenaglia and David Morales' Red Zone dubs), while "Bubbling" offers a lighter and snappier take on the same core sound. Also worth a listen is Chris Greschwinder's re-make of "95-96", which adds a little two-step swing and suitably bombastic sub-bass.

Review: As the Grand Ancestor label rolls towards its 20th resale, the 17th comes from Zion Train in the form of a limited and hand-numbered 180 gram 12" featuring a hefty pair of dubs. The A-side features 'Oya' (20th Century dub) - a seriously heavyweight cut with skewed contemporary synth and hooky vocals buried deep in the mix. 'Shango' (20th Century dub) is a more melodic affair with whimsical leads and a hint of old school reggae next to plenty of modern reverb techniques and hissing less that take off like spacecraft.

It is his first outing of the year following solid slabs of wax for the likes of White Peach and this label dating back to 2015. This one kicks off with 'Spice,' which has bass tones pinging about the mix with big hits, snatched vocal yelps and dusty drums all keeping you on your toes. 'Grief' is darker and dirtier thanks to the filthy great oscillation that rips up the swaggering rhythm and 'Harm' gets deep on some pensive pads and intoxicating melodic sounds. 'Two Rumours' closes down with sub so warm and cuddly it's like being hugged by a new duvet.

Review: Umek's long-standing electro alias Zeta Reticula mints a self-steered new label with more of that nasty, slickly rendered machine funk business he's so respected for. 'Ascending Pathways' sets the tone perfectly with its nervy leads and bruising low end, while 'Chromosphere' digs into a knotty, rhythmic workout peppered with nagging arps. 'Modulatory Functions' has a more open, melodious flavour for those who like a lighter vibe, and 'Caudal Regions' closes the record out with an even more emotive tint to act as a perfect foil to the sinister machinations of the A side.

Review: Zeta Reticula is a Solvenian producer who you might also know as Umek. Away from his big room techno sounds under this alias he crafts much more nuanced and essential electro sounds as evidenced on this fierce five tracker pressed to limed clear vinyl. 'Wakefulness' is all jacked up drums and interplanetary acid and the beats bang just as hard on 'Analgesic Pathways' while 'Cholinergic Projections' is the most white knuckle ride of the lot with whip-snapping snares and hellish synths bringing the terror. 'Reticulate Speech' and 'Abducting Humans' close down with more melodic electro sounds.

Review: Zeta Reticula is the electro alias of Slovenian techno titan Umek and for more than 20 years now he has been serving up sounds from the vanguard. After a fine outing back in June he quickly follows it up with another adventurous 12", this time on Eudemonia. His style is cinematic and as heavy on the synth details and lush atmospheres as it is the rhythms. There is plenty of far-sighted melodic majesty to these cuts - a sense of forlornness and rueful reflection that always brings real meaning to the dancefloor. The subtle but rising sense of joy and euphoria in 'An Activity Cycle' makes it our fav here.

The Beryllium (Sound Synthesis remix)
Review: Zeta Reticula (Uros Umek) is among the wide cream of today's atmospheric breaks and electro producers, carrying on strong with a career that he's kept steady since 2000. Since the mid-2010s, the Slovene star has hopped from label to label, signifying a restlessness that matches the writhing weight of his music. 'The Beryllium' is yet another EP to capture Reticula's preference for unrelent, commanding a unique sense of space and weight that flaunts a true sense of art. Listened to in one way, 'Need To Orbit', sounds like a functional acid jam, but its pitch-perfect use of reverb and EQ renders it gestalt, nearly convincing us that the track was direct-outputted from the aux port of an interplanetary war machine and not a stack of analog synths. On the other hand, the closing remix from Sound Synthesis is nice and cascading - gushing, sheathing sounds abounding - contrasting to Reticula's opting for judderings and impacts.

Review: Resilient Recordings launches with a strong sonic statement from Zero Dayz that presumably lays out its intent going forwards. His 'Sacred Business' is a fizzing and full throttle techno cut with old school 90s influences from view game soundtracks. It fires lasers out like bullets from a machine gun and never quits. 'Energy Flash' legend Joey Beltram remixes with even more potency and DAVE The Drummer adds some flat-footed drums to his version. Gareth Wild closes out with jungle breaks but techno kicks that keep you rooted.

Review: In recent times the Zenker Brothers seem to have spent more time running their inspired Ilian Tape imprint than they have producing music. While we'd hardly criticize their choices - Ilian Tape goes from strength to strength - it's certainly good to have them back. The Munich-based siblings begin their first outing of 2020 with the melodious, far-sighted electro shuffle of "Shaketown", before wrapping mangled, mind-altering electronic riffs around a crunchy techno groove of "Chi Boost". "Bengel Mode" sees the siblings successfully combine alien-sounding riffs with a denser techno rhythm track, while closing cut "Outside" is a sparkling trip into hypnotic, slow-release ambient techno territory with nary a kick-drum in sight.

Zefzeed takes the reins of the first sonic statement with four tracks of sophisticated and deep house and tech. 'A Well Watered Fern' is brain cleansingly smooth with buffed metal synths and liquid grooves. There is a darker minimal march to 'Save The Day' that reminds of Melchior and a sweaty pump to 'Farm That Face' that makes it a standout. 'Fishbed Touring' swings low with tripped-out designs and melted synths.

The original has plenty of retro signifiers from the low-end wobble to the withering synth effects, plus crisp hits and jostling drums. After the dub mix comes a remix from Zed himself alongside Safire which is much more dirty and raw. The beats are broken up so the track takes on a dubstep quality as the low-end oscillations bring the weight and drums hit with more force. Finally, the acappella closes out this fresh 12" on IFG.

Review: Zed Bias's superb recent single with Shumba Youth is a modern fusion of dancehall and ragga that is perfect for loud deployment on top sound systems. Here though it comes in four different versions, all of which tap into different aspects of the UK hardcore continuum. The 4x4 Garage mix is just that and perfect for grotty warehouses, the 4x4 VIP Refix has a more prominent baseline feel and the Jeftuz UKG remix is a broken beat killer with wub-wub goodness. Last of all is the restless and kinetic 2-step mix to close out a high grade 12".

In its original form, it has an alluring vocal charm with unsettling chords over a grinding bassline and sharp percussion. Review: As one of the instigators of the UK 2-Step sound that paved the way for the seminal movements in Dubstep and Grime, Zed Bias, aka Maddslinky, is a true pioneer and stands as one the Godfathers of the UK Bass scene. With a prolific career spanning more than two decades, we're honoured to welcome him into the Unchained family with his debut release on the label.

His powerful 4-track EP echoes both cutting edge modern electronic as well as the nostalgia of UK dance history. All tracks wander into upper BPM territory and sonically span very wide ground; whether this be "Beijing", a track sure to carve itself a place in classic anthem history; or "DoenCa Tropical", a tune which draws new broken-beat boundaries around the 160bpm ethos.

Two tracks feature collaborations with Strategy and Bugz In the Attic's G Force - both music defining legends in their own right.

Spanning both the Drum'N'Bass universe and thought-provoking left-field bass, we hope this fresh release has you covered from club to couch.

As a result, it is organic techno with a rich array of organic and natural details that make it an experience for both body and head. 'Breathe' opens with bird calls, the sound of scuttling insects and nice leggy, rubbery drums. 'Fragments' is a more ragged and rough rhythm with the sound of stampeding herds and 'Di Plastica' is a more aqueous dub with neon fireflies darting about the mix. Review: We're used to hearing Anton Zap dealing in deeper than deep house, so it's intriguing to hear the Russian artist pivoting to a more experimental outlook for this record on fresh label Introspection Audio Limited. '2 VCO', as the name implies, finds Zap exploring synthesis with some hand-wrought modulation and warm, agile sequences, leaving beats behind to let the fluid movement of the oscillators bring the energy to the track. There are drums on hand for 'Virus', but here they move in fractured formations with a scuffed patina which wouldn't sound out of place on Skam. 'Change URSLF' once again jettisons obvious drums for a heavily dubbed voyage between arrhythmic crags of tone and texture, keeping a sense of melodic charm even as the track heads to the outer limits. 'Meosphere' finishes the record in a smudged immersion of underwater electronica, rounding out a picture of Zap exploring new sonic pastures and striking gold.

'Catharsis' is a metallic sounding banger that thrives on driving the tension to an all-time pitch - all the making of a classic techno record. 'Rotator' adds a bit more of a tribal sound to the looped style killer. The title track goes full tribal reminding us of classic Oliver Ho material. 'Tape 4' has broken drum loops and sustained chords locking you in rhythm and 'Tape 2 022' then has urgent drums cantering like a Derby-wining horse and unsettling synth loops. As functional and utilitarian as the robotized music heard therein is the name 'Split #1', which indeed shows that this is an EP flaunting two tracks by each artist; Z@P's tracks are groovier, funkier and more alkaline, opting for the sounding like the inner bloopings of a robotic mechsuit. Stonem's tracks deeper and more expansive by contrast, working in more arpeggiations and dramatic accompaniments, as if to suggest our protagonist has exited the mechsuit and confronted the dystopia of their now wartorn world.

'Exotic Passage' coasts along serenely with gently slapped bongos and warm electric piano, definitely a weapon to have in one's warm up arsenal. Gnork - "Reflection Of A Bird Flying" (6:51)
Review: The French deep house label D3 Elements is now a decade old and to mark the occasion it has assembled a superb three part EP series featuring plenty of talents both new and old. The second EP kick off with some Japanese stylings from Koizumi Yukiko and his piano laced bongo workout '526'. Taelue sets off on a deep and heavy bassline pulse that will make floors march and Nemanja Krstic's 'Aquae Sulis' brings some jazzy chord work and bubbling funk bass for a nice heartfelt vibe. Gnork shuts down with a skittish, stripped back broken beat that makes this another diverse offering.

Soon (MOA mix) (4:30)
Review: Vancouver Dj/producer Yu Su has previously impressed via occasional contributions to the Mood Hut-affiliated Libra Mix series. This is the DJ/producer's debut solo release and boasts two high-grade cuts on one single-sided People's Potential Unlimited 12". Opener "Infi Love" is typical of the hazy, dusty and spacey Vancouver deep house sound - all soft focus intergalactic chords, vintage drum machine percussion, cut-up female vocal samples and undulating analogue bass. The jazziness continues on "Soon (MOA Mix)", where wonderfully hazy trumpet samples and horizontal chords trickle down over a bossa-inspired beat. As you might expect, it's seriously evocative and atmospheric.

Review: Yse Saint Laur'ant makes wonky, left-of-centre sounds for proper underground parties. He's done so for years, and now returns with more of his raw and inventive disco on the sought-after Vinyl Only label. Opener 'Bad Company' pairs visceral arps with glossy pads and soulful vocal, which is stripped away from the 'Better Company' version. On the flipside, 'Don't Look Back' is a more freewheeling and funky feel, with silky basslines and hip swing claps under buttery vocals. Last of all is a classic chug-disco gem. 'Foreign Love' goes slow, with crashing hits and languid bass all topped off by a yearning female vocal that slowly but surely rises into euphoria.

Review: As if buried alive, the tracks on this latest leftfield electro addition to Lennard Ypma's very own Volunar Records, 'Ladies Jam', seldom indulge much ornamentation, instead getting at something incredibly mechanistic. Heavy on the lowpass, tracks like 'GH 1S' and 'Betonsmeer' slow-burningly build up to their acid movements. The accompanying Beau Wanzer cut is the brightest of the lot, but it's also the most minimal, teasing just the faintest of bass nauseations amid faint mouse-clicks and window-wiper sounds.

Review: The Guesthouse label comes through with more irresistible house goodness from Joey Youngman who has been a master of this form for many years. His sound blends the best of funky, soulful grooves with raw house drums to light up any party. He kicks off in wild fashion with the big energy and chunky funk of 'Another Night' before 'Oakland' then layers up slinky drums and emotive vocal hooks into a bristling arrangement. 'Thankful' (JY remix) explores a deeper late-night sound with a more seductive vocal and low-slung drums then things close down with 'Elevate Me' (JY remix), a steamy sound with contemporary r&b vocals and melodies that bring the fun.

Review: 90s Wax label head and Berlin-based producer Francesco Mingrino aka Younger Than Me is doing a fine job of carving himself out a niche in the world of proggy and retro post-rave house. This fresh new slab 'The Early Sound Of Nothing' on Warning is a real throwback to the early days of Sasha & Digweed when they played at parties like Renaissance. The Maruwa remix is a more direct and tense affair and then on the B-side, 'Counter Future' brings more layers of tripped melody and lively, punchy drums that really lock you in. A Sophie Du Palais remix closes this potent package.

Bisso Love (6:55)
Review: French DJ-turned-remixer Young Pulse's popular Paris Edits series notches up seven volumes, this time via a three-tracker packed to the rafters with heavyweight disco-funk grooves. Arguably the best of a very strong bunch is 'Bobo's Reason', a reverb and delay-laden, slightly beefed-up rearrangement of an excitable, horn-heavy disco-soul tune from the Philadelphia school of orchestrated dancefloor fun. There is of course plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere across the EP though, with the spacey, synth-laden, percussion-rich disco-boogie of 'Beggar's Run' being joined on side two by the high-octane disco-funk weight of 'Bisso's Love'.

Wollem Llits M'i (6:47)
Review: Astonishingly, nearly seven years have passed since the last 12" single from Young Marco hit stores. While he's kept himself busy co-curating two volumes of proto-trance anthology series Planet Love and recording a tropical-tinged album (2019's hazy and home listening-focused Bahasa), it's still nice to see him refocus on delivering future dancefloor anthems. 'I'm Still Mellow' is a wholehearted tribute to a psychedelic, sample-heavy Dutch style of the early '90s known as Mellow, which was a kind colourful and loved-up take on British hardcore and European techno. Young Marco's interpretation is simple but devastatingly effective, with fluttering synth sounds and gorgeous electronics tumbling down over a booming bassline and heavyweight breakbeats. Turn to the flip and you'll find a fully psychedelic backwards version. Trippy!

Review: Correcciones Calypso returns from a generous hiatus with the fourth edition of its acclaimed edit series, replete with four re-edits that veer from the subtle to the downright brazen. Thomass Jackson and INigo Vontier invite the French duo Youkounkoun to open proceedings with an insane early 80s edit full of big drums and exotic touches that's been blowing dancefloors all around the world for the past years - and definitely resides in the brazen category, despite a lot of work having gone into it. Olta Karawame make their debut on the series with a powerful, compact edit full of ballsy keyboard riffing and a military-sized kick drum that is guaranteed to have heads banging . To complete the release label bosses Thomass and INigo deliver edits of their own with their characteristic sound, giving this EP maximum a value for money factor and entertainment from start to finish.

Review: Rotary Cocktail welcomes some real heavyweights for this 51st 12": Berlin dub techno mainstay Youandme is behind the original, tune, 'Swell Repeat'. It's a wavy, underlapping and deep dub roller with drunken drums overlaid with silky smooth and seductive percussion. Brazil scene pioneer Renato Ratier then steps up for something more dark and dry with a menacing marching groove and Detroit's finest Kenny Larkin brings fizzing, pixelated synth waves and moody techno rhythms to his remix. Review: Ewan Smith's first 12" of 2018 sees him return to the welcoming embrace of Aus Music, a label he last graced almost three years ago. This time round, there are three tracks to choose from. A-side "Ideal-Passage", a bouncy, techno tempo workout blessed with a restless, undulating bassline, dreamy chords and the kind of clipped guitar samples that were once the preserve of French Touch producers, undoubtedly steals the show, offering the perfect balance between funk-fuelled dancefloor antics and head-in-the-clouds beauty. This vibe continues on the arguably deeper and even more melodious "Thewizzwasfordillysmissus", while closer "Sicko" wraps a chunky, UK garage-influenced rhythm track in tech house style electronics glitches and yearning synth stabs.

This one starts with he hardcore garage 2-step of 'Don't Say' with its classic samples and nimble bass dancing about the mix. There is another perfect mix of rough and smooth on 'All That Acid' with its crashing hits but buttery vocal stabs and 'Choose One' then strips things back to a more blissed out garage vibe and 'Home' follows tact with silky chords and rubbery basslines.

Entitled 'Projection Palace', the title track undergoes two renditions; the Blue Lines-era Massive Attack inspired Reflections mix and the much heavier junglised Night Terrors mix. In between we have two other beguiling bumpers - 'Mico Aggressions' is a brain rattling electroid buzz fest while 'OIC' takes us on an abrasive trip up and down the hardcore continuum. All four grooves are exceptional.

This third outing deals in the sort of deep and intimate sounds you can expect to hear in the club on any given night and it comes from Closer resident Yone-ko, who is a techno maestro from Japan but currently based in Berlin. There is a melancholy to thee tunes, with their wispy pads and dreamy chords, while the rolling, scuffed up drums lock you into a state of trance. Review: We have absolutely no idea who's behind this hand-stamped 12" - all involved are keeping tight-lipped - but you should certainly give the clips a listen if celebratory disco-house is your thing. It's a brilliantly bumpin' affair that adds a plethora of classic disco vocal samples to a surging disco, bass-heavy disco-house groove rich in savagely edited orchestral sweeps borrowed from another Salsoul-era gem. It's the kind of in-your-face, arms-aloft affair that sounds like it could have been crafted in the halcyon days of disco-house (the 'French Touch' era) in the mid-to-late 1990s. It's available in radio edit and 'club cut' forms, with the latter offering just that little bit more celebratory goodness.

Review: Planet Rhythm's third transmission is another various artists' affair that takes no prisoners. This is straight-ahead techno that is proud of its perfect planed linear loops and ability to get you in a mediative head space. Erdem Yetim kicks off with the seriously weighty 'Perfect Silence' and its panel-beaten loops. Simone Tavazzi's 'Pyramid' is another hefty kicker with icy hi hat ringlets and fleshy drums while 'Das Ego' is as good as reductive dub techno gets. Dave Simon hits the nail on the head with his 'Dubby Stomper.'

It kicks off with a pair of new EPs on the same day and this is the first from Yeti Mind Tricks. 'We Ain't Like Them' is a hammering Motor City techno cut for the peak time which Bone remixes into a more stripped-back but no less edgy and potent cut. On the flip are 'Bimini Road' and 'Vandelay,' both of which bring stylish techno drenched in machine soul.

She manages to lay down some bombastic and elastic rhythms on 'Human Error Processor' which has the kick drums pinging about the mix, before hammering a more searching and militant techno groove on 'Perforated.' There is sleazy and unrelenting energy to the chaotic percussion and synths of 'Metro City Bay Area' and that only gets turned up to 11 for the final outing, 'Three Deities'.

Review: If you like your tech-house off-kilter, spacey and rich in quirky, glitchy percussion programming, we'd suggest checking out this collaborative EP from Italian tech-house star Yaya and fellow countryman Nacho Bolognani. Opener 'Flan' is high-grade early morning tech-house, with deep space pads and gaseous electronic textures floating across gltch-laden late-night drums and a fine analogue bassline, while 'Tastic' is a funkier slab of intergalactic tech-house warmth. Over on the flip we're treated to two rock-solid re-rubs. First Mahony gives 'Tastic' a slicker, smoother feel (it reminded us of late 90s, Wiggle style tech-house) before Steve O'Sullivan provides a tougher, darker and more analogue rich revision of the same track.
