  2. (Vi Vi) Vicious Games (Drums dub) (5:11)
  3. (Vi Vi) Vicious Games (dub) (7:58)
Review: Given that acid revivalists Paranoid London have yet to put a foot wrong, it's no surprise to find that "(Vi-Vi) Vicious Games" is another absolute belter. It's taken from the duo's forthcoming album and features sometime Posthuman collaborator Josh Caffe channeling his inner Robert Owens and Jamie Principle over a retro-futurist backing track. In its full length, the track brilliantly combines Paranoid London's jacking drums and thrusting acid bass with dreamy chords and just the right amount of glassy-eyed melodic flourishes. It sounds like a classic TRAX release given the Paranoid London treatment, which I'm sure we all agree is a very good thing indeed. If you're in the mood for something even sleazier and more driving, the Bam Bam-inspired Dub has it covered.

Review: Hudd Traxx 3rd installment of their 10th Anniversary series comes from Eddie Leader, Hector Moralez, Washerman, Brett Johnson & Rhythm Plate. Label owner Eddie Leader delivers a deep & moody house groover with the slick vocals of long time Hudd Artist Hector Moralez, aptly title 'Way Back'. Washerman picks the pace up with 'Twilite', which is reminiscent of legendary Detroit label Underground Resistance, and adds to the continued diversity of this project. Brett Johnson's 'Mr Smarty Pants' is re-released after gaining plays from the likes of Laurent Garnier and an edit by Dyed Soundorom. Closing out the EP are 2 of the most underrated Producers in the business; Rhythm Plate. 'Keep Moving' was Overshadowed by 'Inside Me' on the 'Robbin Hudd EP' in 2007 but is given it's time to shine on 'Now & Then Part 3' and is a fine addition to the 10 Year celebrations.

Review: The Jaunt Records 10 years series shores up with the Land installment featuring another four adventurous souls that have the spirit of deepest techno in their bones. Stojche lets lush Motor City synths lead the way on the energetic "The Exchange" before AWOL gets into an intricate broken beat groove on the stunning "54.973379, -1.614705". Luke Hess brings some unabashed acid gurgles to the front of the mix on "TDY" and then Deep'a & Biri plot a course for dubby waters with the growling tones of "Pilgrim".

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Especial is delighted to welcome Baris to the roster. Known for his edit series of obscure Turkish Psychedelic, Rock and Disco, here he takes the producer's chair to present "200". Working with musicians and singers to create a completely original production. The song's message for equality (of the sexes) highlights the bigotry and backward political and religious boundaries his country faces and acts as a siren to the current troubles. Handed to Emotional Recordings over 5 years ago but with no label to release it at that time, now we are delighted to be able to release 200's message. The original is backed with remixed from new production duo Khidja, as well as East London's finest, The Asphodells. Teaming up with guitarist Balabas, Romania's Khidja turn in a deep and introspective interpretation mixing their own heavy eastern influences, while the B-side sees Weatherall and Fairplay don their Asphodells mantle for two renditions that firmly lay it before the ALFOS alter. With artwork (by Jamie Paton) highlighting the struggle for fairness and freedom in his homeland, we hope the release can be seen as a support for their tribulations and highlight the talent that lays East.

Review: William J.Youngman's Headless Horseman project has created a new and exciting techno sound that was only an offshoot of EBM and industrial in years past. Stepping out of his own imprint, the dark horseman lands on Tommy Four Seven's excellent 47 label, tearing through the speakers from the get-go thanks to the toxic sounds of "Revelation", and the even nastier sway of "Concussion". Metallic and hard-nosed in absolutely every way, "Locust" follows up on that with a menacing pounce of beats and cavernous bass, while "Gravity" breaks the techno groove for something much more in line with the likes of Powell's Diagonal output. Big boy sounds.

Review: Holic Trax label boss Tomoki Tamura continues his anniversary celebrations by presenting his own work on this third installment of 5ive Years. The title track is a deep and crafty tech house cut suited to more subtle, heads down moments, while "Polyphony Six" keeps things equally moody but fattens out the bass and warms up the lead lines. "U's Floppy Disk" is a more taut, wiry track with gruff drums and splashes of bleepy FX - the perfect tripped out club tool. "High Chee's" lightens the mood at the 11th hour with a more playful melodic line that should fine favour with all kinds of good time DJs.

Review: 89:Ghost is on fire at present, having thrown down killer releases from Todd Sines, Logic System and Tomoki Tamura over the past year. Tommy Vicari Jr is a great addition to the roster, bringing a freaky, wobbly and distinctly hi tech approach on "All That Matters" that will have party people freaking out in a whole new way. "Things At Night" takes a completely different approach with its focus on delicately chopped up piano hooks. "Tlk 2 Me Wt Yr Bdy" flips the script yet again with a roughneck, 'ardcore sound palette and some filtered house elements riding atop a booming low end. "Likely Story" finishes this varied EP off with a cheeky garage house strut that will have just as many fans as the other killer jams on this well rounded record.

Review: Italian duo Rufus and Mass_prod are back once again as Nightdrivers, shoring up to Holic Trax with more of their infectious club-ready material. Beyond the functionality of their drums, where the Nightdrivers excel is in their choice of samples and textures to add a psychoactive twist to their craft. "A Funny Thang" is a delightfully unhinged workout, while "Stressedout" does a fine job of digging into a heads down, RnB inflected groove. "Rising" switches things up with a broken beat groove that loads up sunkissed soul samples to great effect, and then the record rounds out with a dub mix of "A Funny Thang".

Review: The WineLambs is a new project on Troubled Kids from label founder Jesus Gonsev and Dan Piu. It's an assured trip into buttery smooth deep house for those who likes things sensual, starting off with the plush tones of "Falling In Your Arms" featuring the soulful vox of Shareen. "A Genuine World" is another hazy gem of a track, setting adrift on a bed of harmonious chords and achingly understated bass. "Poti Poti" is a spicier affair that pushes the beat to the foreground and gets a little choppier with the chords. Grant Focus turns in a remix of "A Genuine World" that strides confidently into rock solid deep house territory once more, extending the scope of this EP while maintaining the consistent vibe.

  3. Tough Crowd
Review: It's been a little while since we heard from Laura Jones, but the Leeds-based producer is back in action on her own Sensoramic label with a strident EP of limber tech house excursions that highlight her continued progression as a producer. "Pathway" is a gently bouncy cut with bubbling synths coursing between the subtle swing of the beat, using vocal snippets to great effect to create a decidedly trippy atmosphere. "Tough Crowd' pushes the psychedelic approach even further with some truly wigged out tones swirling in a cut just made for eyes-closed-dancing moments. 100Hz takes on a remix of "Pathway" that uses crafty, militaristic drums and sparse treatment of the melodic and vocal elements to create a delicate, compelling alternative vision of Jones' original.

Now they return with their own edit series on brand new label Excursions. With eyes squared fully on the floor, each obscurity is given some serious groove muscle for the floor... Charaunitsy's soulful croons and yearning horns are given an additional kick/snare swing, Latvia's Mirdza gets a deliciously camp turbo charge while Ukraine's Tatyana Kochergina gets a full-on Philly treatment with lavish strings and a bassline that won't say nyet.

  1. A Time Before Now (Millennium mix) (7:08)
  2. Rebuilding (original mix) (5:10)
  3. On The Road (original mix) (6:30)
Review: Immigrant Records launched in 1998 and after a six year hiatus is back with an EP produced by US techno veteran Casey Hogan - his first vinyl release since 2008. Casey emerged in the late 90's with fellow techno legends Adam Beyer, Dietrich Schoenemann, Alexi Delano and Jesper Dahlback and is a pioneer of the original tech-house genre. Now a professional sound engineer, he is back doing what he does best and is currently working on new projects and remixes with Robin Porter for Immigrant and Shva Muzik. The EP's title track "A Time Before Now" was produced back in 2000 and has been pulled from his archives to show what tech-house was, is and should be, with it's shuffling percussion, arresting bass line, pensive chord lines and introspective vocals. "Rebuilding" highlights Casey's ability to create an effortless techno groove that chugs along with undulating sub bass and hypnotic synth patterns. "On The Road" takes a detour down a darker road with a haunting sub bass, trademark shuffling percussion and mesmerising chords.

Review: The Whiskey Pickle crew turn their attention to a new partnership from Steve Cobby and Laurie Welton, the former being known for decades of DJing, label management and producing alongside the likes of Stephen Mallinder for Throne Of Blood. Here the emphasis, as expected with Whiskey Pickle, is on disco with a slight leaning to the left. "Absolute" is a bubbling jam laden with illustrious threads of melody, cosmic in nature but still rooted thanks to a rock solid rhythm section. "Limoncello" is a more introspective affair that works with minor chords and a more intricate set of drums, but don't be fooled the groove is very much still intact. New York duo Whatever/Whatever bring a tougher dynamic to "Absolute," dialing in some beefy beats and amping up the synth touches for a surefire house heater.

Review: Sudd Records has been going for some time as a digital-only label, but now they make the leap to vinyl with the help of Detroit champ Gari Romalis. "Abstraxx (Linear Mix)" kicks off the record in a heady fog of undulating pads, the smoke positively drifting out of the speaker cones over a simple, deep-as-you-like drum pattern. "Dark Ryda (Sunset Mix)" gets a little more funk in its rhythm, but the same mellow mood prevails, almost reaching dub techno levels in its atmospheric chord swells. "Heat (Bout That Life Mix)" takes things out of the darkness and into a lighter frame of mind, but Romalis is still firmly in the deep end of the deep house pool with this final cut on the record.

The release begins with the ranging shuffle of "Al Chiaro Di Luna", a stripped down affair peppered with haunting flecks of jazz and a strung out late morning atmosphere. Label boss Ti Es then steps up with a remix of "Don't Stop" throwing down some tougher drum tones and working the reverb before the original version plunges down into an intimate space populated by natural grooves and strange sounds alike. "Pace Of The Are" then delivers a finishing blow with snaking percussion and gnarly bass tones.

Review: Tyree Cooper's All You Need Is House EP is a proud celebration of the genre, done Chicago style and rammed home by Marco's wailing vocals. Through solid drums and strong vocal hooks, Cooper's original beats down hard justifying the need for a 180g pressing. It rattles and hums until dropping into a tom-drum and snare solo similar to Runaway's "Brooklyn Club Jam". Bobby Starr's mix brings Marco's Teddy Pendergrass-sung vocals to the fore, while Milty Evans gets a little techier with a cut up approach, adding white noise flashes and lots of filterwerk. Cooper second take comes via a "classic dub" which draws a link between squelchy baile funk and a Masters At Work drum track.

After appearing on Love Notes back in 2015, Tucker's back on the label with another salvo of colourful, charming and utterly magnificent house jams shot through with the inventive programming of techno. "Alternative Faction" is many things - a bubbly acid track, a swooning deep house cut and a sassy broken beat affair - and yet feels utterly smooth in its execution. "That Time Of Year" has plenty of Motor City soul feeding into its composition, not least in the gorgeous synth strings, and "New Mission" gets busy in the swing with all kinds of bouncing melodies and rhythms.

Review: The Go Finger label has been digging into the undergrowth of synthwave sounds and deviant electro for a few years now, more recently graduating from the tape scene to put out EPs of leftfield electronic adventures on wax. This EP in particular is quite something, calling on the vintage talents of Das Ding in all their eerie, warped, pulsing, analogue refinement. "Conun Drum" is a curiously playful trip through noirish cityscapes by way of strobing lead lines and militaristic machine beats, while "Life Is A Tool In The Hands Of Strangers" takes a more uptempo approach without losing the bombast of their melodic arrangements. Dutch electro champ DJ Overdose steps up for the B side, dropping the overcast and creeping "I See No Stars At Night" and the dishevelled robot beatdown "Potje Freaken".

Review: Following the excellent instalment from DJ Skull, Mentha continues to gather pace as a house and techno label of note with this sublime offering from Hakim Murphy. While the Chicago native may be known for some bruising hardware house and techno a lot of the time, he's showing his more sensitive side on this release with delicate tracks that head into deep techno waters. The title of the EP says it all, as nimble, expressive beats merge with soothing, aqueous pad tones for a most satisfying of listening experiences. Fans of early deep techno a la B12 and Stasis will find much to enjoy here.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Ambulate
  2. Dover Calling
Review: After an excellent first release featuring Freerotation lynchpin Steevio, Russ Gabriel's Rivers Of Groove label returns with a pair of excursions into lush, bubbling techno from Gabriel on his own. As a first generation UK techno stalwart, it's little wonder that he can turn out productions as accomplished as these, but there's no sense that he's treading water. "Ambulate" bears the hallmarks of modular production, all twinkling, morphing synth tones chiming around a delicate beat, while "Dover Calling" favours a snappier electro palette, but both stand out from the crowd for the sheer quality in the production, the warmth in the composition and the needlepoint focus given to every shred of detail in this crucial cuts.

Review: One Records move into 2016 with what is set to be one of the biggest records of the year coming from elusive producer Gabriels. This one sided, one track bomb comes in the form of 'Amethyst' and sits in a whole league of its own.

Originally from England but currently based in the midst of the L.A hills, masked by mysterious identity, Gabriels has been quietly forging a comprehensive studio set up and is finally ready to unveil his debut release. Setting his own standards sky high, 'Amethyst' grabs you from the off with it's floor shaking bass, immersive vocals and hypnotic energy that builds with subtle intensity and texture for a dramatic breakdown. This is the track you'll remember when you leave the club, an undeniable beast that is certain to do the rounds in 2016.
