Review: One of three Seefeel re-releases arriving together - shining light on the band's mid-90s 'Warp years' - St/Fr/Sp is the only one of these that has really never existed in the past. Comprising two EPs, Starethrough and Fracture/Tied, the outing also brings in a very rare Autechre remix of 'Spangle', making for a package that's got collector's item written all over it.
Musically, this is around the moment when Seefeel began to fully embrace the abstract and electronic, having just signed to Warp, and while the shoegaze of their past remains audible there are so many influences here plucked from beyond that spectrum. Embracing ambient, drone, rave chill-out, dub, acid, and psychedelia, this edition reflects two ends of that world - the blissful and largely astral first EP, and beat-driven and highly rhythmic second.

Review: Belgian-German band Dictaphone are back with a fifth album that follows on from their highly acclaimed last full length ARP70. One again here leader Oliver Doerell is joined by partners Roger Doring on clarinet and saxophone, and Alex Stolze on violins. The band continue to explore their notion of morbid instruments with an old tale machine and shadowy bass clarinet adding to the many layers of intriguing and mystery. The tracks here are ghostly and spooky, with 10 different journeys into sombre musical darkness that are never austere, but always fascinating. Timely, minimal and unusual, this is a quietly compelling masterpiece.

Review: A reissue of an early work by acclaimed avant-gardist and pioneer Alvin Lucier, 'Bird And Person Dyning' is a spoken word and musique concrete pipe dream, spanning the furthest reaches of weirdo acousmatism, phase interference, and the transmission of sound through physical objects. Both pieces on this LP explore cyborgish concepts, the first being a grotesque of the human voice, and the second exploring the idea of an electronic bird. Lucier's standing at this point in his career puts him squarely in a cohort of pioneers who emerged in the early 1960s.

With sounds that might remind some of the USS Discovery's spore hub jump drive in Star Trek: Discovery, it should go without saying Tobias' Hall Ov Fame sits in the futurist end of ambient and drone music. But that's not to suggest there isn't also plenty of humanism happening here, too. The lush, perhaps ironically warm tones of 'Abandoned' come with added, inaudible vocals, albeit even these sound like they might be reeling off departure times for the day's starship flights.
Geeking out aside (blame the producer's clear knack for realising the kinds of noises that transport you directly into the cosmos), this is a record of deep layers, texture upon texture seeming to move in tandem, moments of harmony dissipating into simple refrains, before the next movement begins. It has been just over 12 months since Ennio Morricone passed away, aged 91, and if it were up to use there would have been a non-stop stream of reissues from the Italian maestro's back catalogue to help people either remember or discover what made his work so important. It's hard to comprehend, but during his career he wrote more than 400 scores for TV and cinema, alongside around 100 classical works. That's some contribution.
Giu' La Testa is one of many he worked on to accompany a Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western - with the pair collaborating on all but the latter's directorial debut. From whichever angle you're listening, this is the epitome of that relationship, with tracks veering from deeply atmospheric to playful, Romantic and wistful to cautiously adventurous. Exceptional stuff from a genuinely irreplaceable practitioner.

Review: Remember when James Blake first popped into the common conscience? Or slid, subtly, gently, barely-existing, like a thought without a mind, lost in the vast expanse of silence, trying to be heard? Review: Song Cycle Records has put together a collector's edition box set of the Solaris original soundtrack as realised by Russian composer Edward Artemiev, who was once a member of the legendary Experimental Studio of Electronic Music in Moscow. Andrey Tarkovsky's masterpiece film from 1972 is a cosmic epic with a soundtrack to match thanks to its many eerie synthesiser sounds and lo-fi, alien ambient atmospheres. The pair also worked on Mirror (1975) and Stalker (1979), but Solaris might be their best, as this compelling box set proves.

Review: British experimental band Coil remain hardcore favourites for record collections of a certain age. They were on fire in the late eighties and early nineties and often switched it up from one album to another. Following on from the release of new editions of Love's Secret Domain and Musick To Play In The Dark 2 comes this trifold edition of The New Backwards, which was initially conceived in 2007. It is an extended edition that revisits a number of tracks that didn't fit with the band's first posthumous release Ape of Naples from 2005, and features plenty of chaotic rhythms and outrageous grooves that all have their own unique flow and atmosphere.

Review: Experimental jazz meets electronic on this hybrid chimera of an album, wherein Gozen Atila aka. Anadol saw to a troupe of Istanbul jazz musicians recording over her pre-made synth jazz compositions. The sonic result is a strange recollection of Byzantine backstreets, noir sonic judders and hauntologic Persian dirges. It's enthralling because it's hard to break down where electronics end and live elements begin; 'Eciflere Gel' is a toe-tapping, hi-hat shuffling backlit crime-drama jazz bit, while 'Ablamin Gozleri' is completely different: a hauntingly electronic folk song. 'Istasyon Plajinda...', meanwhile, is a time-stopping and doomy ambient soundscape cut. Via everything from organ automation to subversion of tradition, Anadol has created a masterpiece.

Review: Het Zweet is, in Marien Van Oers' own words, her "tribal industrial ritual". As abstract as that sounds, it's actually not hard to hear what the Breda, Netherlands-based artists means. There's a mantra like quality to much of what's here, although the sounds themselves definitely feel as though they've been captured from a production line, recording equipment set up at a distance to ensure there's plenty of space between noises.
Rhythmically charged, tracks like 'From The Lowland' have an almost-rave-techno quality to them, while 'Topsy Turvy' takes us into remote regions of indigenous somewhere, and 'Ram' plays hide and seek with suggestions of echo and distant drums. Meanwhile, 'Red Robe' takes us down a kind of bar-punk-rock-n-roll warm up avenue, all frenetic guitar hook build up. Incredibly varied, considering how minimalistic the whole thing is, it's frankly a work of subtle genius.
